Ecumenical Activity And The Family •
•
manuel, entitled "Shalom," focuses on peace in the city, in the family and in the world and provides excellent opportunity for ecumenical activity. Most recently, the National Council of Catholic Women has produced a kit entitled "The More We Are Together, The Happier We Will Be." It is described as an ecumenical kit for children from six to 96.
SO FAR, this has been an admittedly lop. sided Catholic approach, and that's only half the story. I have recently spoken family life specialists in the Lutheran to and Methodist communions, and they, too, are looking for vehicles on which to move the interfaith dialogue. The Concordia sex education series presents a biblical and reverential view of human sexuality and is one of the most up-to-date and positive publications that has appeared.

The thesis behind the kit is that "children are born ecumenists, just as they are born integrationists, and that unjust prejudices that mar their later characters are implanted, not inborn." It's a pot-pourri of fliers and pamphlets explaining the teaching of a number of non-Catholic Churches, and providing valuable information on the attitudes of children. In a very fine article, Father Carl Pfeiffer of the National C.C.D. Office writes on "The Elementary School and Ecumenism." He cites three basic attitudes that should be imparted to youngsters, objectivity, respect or reverence, and compassion. In another booklet, Dr. Spock, the wellknown author of books on child-rearing, writes that a child "must be taught to be unfriendly, he isn't born that way." Father Gerard Sloylan maintains that the religious education "must do and teach as if Christ's Church were one, even though badly sundered by sin and pride."

The altar itself is unusual. Consisting of more than a ton of concrete, its surface shape is more square than rectangular, true to its nature as a table. Since the priest no longer moves from side to side during Mass, there is no need for a wide altar. The depth noted here serves to highlight the supreme importance of the altar as well as to make concelebration possible. The entire surface is visible from every part of the churcn.

WORDS MEANS MUCH his sermon, Bishop rMcKeon reminded the congregation of the derivation of the word "parish," from a Greek word meaning "a stranger." Thus it was that Abraham, Lot, Isaac and indeed the whole Chosen People were referred to as Strangers. St. Peter, said the bishop, reminds us that we are strangers and pilgrims, and St. Paul that we are citizens of the household of God. The Chosen People were on pilgrimage to God, their final end. The bishop went on to examine the word "ekklesia," the local community of the Chosen People called to pay God faithful w orship. One passes through the doors of the Old Testament into the church of the New. A BISHOP EXPLAINS: "THE Diocese of Douala, which numbers 135,000 Catholics out of a population of 365,000, is divided into 34 parishes ,for which there are 53 priests in all. Seventeen of the parishes have only one pastor of souls. "In this immense work, the priests are assi* ed by 750 catechists, all very zealous, but sometimes handicapped by a standard of instruction which is little adapted to their position. Since Vatican II we have therefore considered setting up a permanent diaconate and choosing the first candidates from among these catechists. "To their ministry of the word will be added the ministry of the sacraments and the ministry of charity. The deacons will be a precious help in the bigger parishes of the towns as well as in our isolated missions in the bush. "We have decided in favour of married deacons. As we have not the means to pay "fulltime' deacons, we have chosen candidates who can honestly live with their family, either on the income of their plantations or on the pay they receive in their various jobs. Our future deacons will therefore continue their functions as before and in the places where they have been working up to now. They will then devote their free time to the functions of their order.
THE CHOICE OF CANDIDATES "The candidates have been called by the bishop who knows them. The parish priests made a thorough inquiry on the religious and social life of each candidate, on their family situation and on the esteem in which they are held by the faithful around them. "The results of these inquiries were then presented to the Diocesan Council, and eight candidates were chosen to start their training. In the choice of the candidates we have taken into account the needs of the town as well as there of the country districts. "Four of the eight candidates are head-catechists, two are headmasters of primary schools, one is a qualified nurse and one is a building constructor.
TRAINING OF CANDIDATES "The training is spread over a period of three years, with training periods of one month during the summer holidays and a week at Easter and Christmas. Under the direction of the Dominicans of Bassa and Fathers Lihan and Ntamag, the candidates study the theology of the faith and of the sacraments, sacred scripture, catechetics, the technique of preaching and of liturgical chants, and the religious life. They also receive practical exercises in their future functions.

"The last week of their summer holiday training is also devoted to the training of the wives of the candidates. They learn the meaning of the diaconate, the responsibility in the Church of a wife of a sacred minister, and the role they have to play in social and Catholic Action movements. "The ordination of the first deacons will qot take place before December 8 on account of the bad state of the roads during the rainy season."

THE Government has agreed to a request by Archbishop Morris of Cashel that, in return for his meeting the cost of restoring the ruined 15thcentury church at the National Monumen t, Holycross Abbey, he will be granted a lease of the Abbey to replace the present parish church, built in 1840 and in poor condition. The legal aspects require an Act of the Dail. OUT AND ABOUT WITH V.C.W. BRANCH REPORTS REGION 5.—A very sad situation has arisen South of the River. It would seem that the only region which is functioning as such is Southern Region. It would appear that the others have virtually disappeared. Especially sad is the disappearance of Region 5. Earlier in the year many things were planned — youth clubs, squash nights, dances, etc., which were to be run by a Regional Social Committee with participant branches providing funds. These plans have since gone astray. A bottle drive was held and many dollars realised which are lying idle. What is even sadder is that no one seems to be r-b9wing much interest, where there was once a deep involvement. There have been two abortive attempts to hold meetings of the regional presidents, the most recent attempt being Wednesday, August 21, when only one branch president turned up. The regional meeting in the past was found to be most helpful and very useful as a forum for branches to solve many of their problems. So all branches involved—what about making an attempt to revive the interest you once showed and live up to the ideals you set out to achieve?
MANNING.—Last Sunday Manning Y.C.W. held a Bike-a-thon in aid of their entrant in the Miss Y.C.W. Quest. This proved to be a great success and thanks must go to all who participated in the actual ride and those who acted as checkpoints as well as the general organising of the function. On Sunday, September 8, a Car Trial will be held by the Y.C.W. in Manning, and with co-operation and assistance a successful day is ensured. It will leave Manning at 4 p.m. and at the destination a barbecue tea will be held, with salads and buns provided and drinks available. ATTADALE.—The Attadale Boys' Y.C.W. commenced in June with a total of three boys, followed by a Helen and David Truslove on a 'Bicycle made for Two, at the Manning Y.C.W. Bike-a-thon on Sunday last. Dear Boys & Girls Wel l now, did you find out how hens drink? They put their heads down and take a small sip. Then they raise their heads again, and l ook as if they are tasting it and l istening. Then they have another sip. A ll this makes me think of one k ind of prayer. Grown ups would call it "meditation," but don't let us bother about the name. I do a little of this "hen thinking" every day, and you can try it too. If you have a B ible or New Testament try to read a l ittle but stop (like the hen) when you find something interesting, and think about it. God sometimes puts ideas into our mind in this way and we should listen for them. So it becomes a kind of prayer. Thank you, Sue-Ellen for your letter, tell ing me about your age and c orrect birthday. I'll remember you alright on the proper day. By the time you read this you wil l have had half the hol iday won't you. Don't forget to make one day a holiday for Mum too. Do some of the jobs she usual ly does for her - she'll love it. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' CENTENARY The story of the Christian Brothers' first 100 years in Australia is told in the September number of the national magazine Parade. Read how this great Catholic teaching body was started in November, 1868, with the arrival from Ireland of four penniless Brothers led by Bro. Patrick Ambrose Treacv and how it expanded until today 1100 Brothers teach 50,000 students in 204 schools throughout Australia. It is a story in which e very Cathol.c can take pride.
You can obtain or order a copy of Parade from your newsagent. Price, 25 cents.
