ARCHBISHOP REDMOND PRENDIVILLE, the fifth Bishop of Perth and its Second Archbishop, died on June 28; he was 67. Archbishop Prendiville entered St. John of God Hospital on June 6. He suffered a stroke on Wednesday, June 26 which paralysed his left side.

ONSECRATED on October 22, 1933, as Coadjutor with the right of succession to Archbishop Patrick Joseph C lune, he succeded to the See on May 24, 1935. He has been Archbishop of Perth for 33 years in which, despite difficult times, there was extensive development of the Archdiocese. Archbishop Pren divil le was away from Perth when Archbishop Clune died. He was in Ireland recruiting priests for the Archdiocese.

MEMORY Blessed with a fantastic memory for names and faces, the Archbishop would del ight many a person on his extensive country and suburban visitation with their name readi ly used. Parents to sons and daughters; this personal touch was never lost to him. In his latter years, bad health forced the Archbishop to curtail a lot of his external activities. Country visitation was taken over by his auxil iary bishops—first by Bishop L. J. Goody, now Bishop of Bunbury, then by Bishop J. J. Rafferty, whose death in Ireland while on a holiday was a great personal loss to the Archbishop, and since 1962 by Bishop M. McKeon.
PRIESTS This was to be a task which preoccupied the Archbishop for his 33 years in office, to have enough priests to cope with the expansion of the archdiocese in paris hes and special works . In 1935 there were 51 Priests, and in 1968 there are 1 24 diocesan and 83 Rel iious priests. Another Archbishop isaspect of the statistics. Inpointed out by 1935, there were 27 parish es, today there a re 98, an increase of 71 in his episcopate. The erection of these parishes meant in nearly every case the bui lding of a churc h, school or schools, presb ytery, and in sorhe cases parish hal ls. These statistics do not ine the diocese of Bunbury, which was established in 1 954.

St. Mary's Cathedral was packed with invited guests, official representatives of the Crown, Federal and State Governments, other countries, other Churches, Civic dignitaries, the Armed Forces, representatives of Catholic organisations and personal friends and relatives of His Grace the Archbishop. There were representatives of all the Religious of the Archdiocese and members of the East Perth section of the Cathedral parish where the Archbishop first served when he came to Australia in 1925. The concelebrants entered St. Mary's Cathedral for the Solemn Requiem after a procession of the priests, secular and religious, of the Archdiocese, visiting Bishops and their rep-
resentatives.
His Grace attended the f irst session of the Second Vatican Council in October, 1 962, and found that he was the twelfth most senior archbishop present. I t was at the second session that he became affl icted with hepatitis. He returned f rom this session showing obvious strain and loss of weight. Recurrent bouts of hepatitis kept him in hospital for several long periods. In December, 1967, he was stricken wi th pulmonary oedema, and even thou:* he was able to leave hospital, his attempts at recovery were unsuccessful. He was readmitted to St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco, on June 6 and suffered a stroke on Wednesday, June 26. His condition deteriorated until death came at 2.30 p.m. on June 28, 1968

SOME OF THE EARLY HISTORY
Saint Mary's Cathedral was consecrated on May 4, 1930. This view of the sanctuary was taken at the Pontifical High Mass, and shows Archbishop Clune, and the many prelates and priests who were present. The Archbishop came from an ancient Norman family which held a large estate in Kerry. On his father's side he could trace his ancestry back 400 and more years to the founder of the family in Kerry, Sir John Fitzredmond Prendiville; his mother came from an Irish-of-Irish family, the O'Sullivans. This blending of distinguished Norman and Irish stocks was surely made in heaven. Redmond Prendiville was educated at the local National School and, in September, 1914, entered St. Brendan's College, Killarney, where he finished his secondary education, and matriculated, in 1918. A few months later, as a student for the priesthood, he entered the celebrated missionary college of All Hallows in Dublin. While a student of philosophy at All Hallows, Redmond Prendiville attended University College, Dublin, where he gained the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1921. Next we find him reading his theological course in St. Peter's College, Wexford. In June, 1925, he was raised to the priesthood. After a short holiday in his native Kerry, he left Ireland for Western Australia to work under Archbishop Clune in this Archdiocese. His first appointment was to the staff of St. Mary's Cathedral. His kindness of heart, apostolic zeal and cheerful outlook on life made an indelible impression on the people of East Perth, which was the district assigned to him. In 1929„ Archbishop Clune appointed Father Prendiville administrator of St. Mary's Cathedral. In this responsible position the young priest made a great name for himself as an organiser by his eminently successful handling of the many tasks in connection with the opening of the new Cathedral, in 1930.

can we make the Church "present and HOW active" in the "ordinary circumstances of life," as the Vatican Council asks? A young moulder gives us his experience of Christ in the foundry. I have worked in a foundry for six years—five of them as an apprentice moulder. The work is hard physically. A moulder is handling sand all day to make the moulds, and molten metal is cast into these moulds. A tradesman gets a great kick out of seeing what he has made. Communication with people is easy. Most of the tradesmen are on the same level, ready either for a yarn or to help each other in the job. They respect each other's opinions, too.

Over 220 Cottesloe parishioners and their friends, young and old, had a wonderful evening on June 20 at the Star of the Sea annual Ball, held this year at Mosman Reception Centre. The proceeds of the bal l will be divided between the parish and missions in Asia. . Mr. Mervyn D'Souza, a parishioner, provided excellent entertainment during the evening. , It is doubtful whether a cold Church was ever a reason for a single absent worshipper. That it is often used as an excuse is without doubt. Our picturesque language allows the word 'warmth' to describe both room temperature and a degree of friendship and fellowship. Inevitably the two meanings become interdependent. So whilst, to the devoted Christian, denial of the body is good for the soul, to the less well-discipl ined, (and isn't that most of us?) a chilly church can help us to remain God's frozen people. .. The Pyrox - Schwank gas radiant heating system puts heat where it is wanted, at ground level, without heating the entire volume of air in a building. Being gas, individual burners can be adjusted to give exactly the output required. St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, Melbourne, has this system installed.
