0 you have the same neurosis as everyone
else, or do you have a neurosis peculiar to yourself?
EVEN in sickness there is a desire to be "in," by having an ai lment which bolsters snobbishness. How often people boast that they have a disease which gives them great prestige, or boast of an operation which no one else had. The great advantage of an unusual ailment is that it is not only chronic but chronical—it makes news. No one ever considers himself "in" by having a cold, which like a boxer goes down blow by blow. Nor is there anything exclusive about a cough. A cough is something which you cannot help if you do it, but if anyone else does it, it is said to be done on purpose just to annoy you. Bringing the subject to the level of neurosis—are you "in" with your neurosis?
Does it fit the mood of our times? Is it a la mode?
MEANINGLESS In order to be "in" with your neurosis you must hold that life is not to be planned or organised, but that it is meaningless and absurd. It would be well to quote now and then a line of Camus or Heidigger. If you are historical-minded, speak of the impact of two world wars in which people had to live from one day to another, never knowing what would happen next. But even this dread of wars has given way to dread of atomic warfare. Louis XVI said: "After me, the deluge." As an "in" neurotic, you must say: "After me, the atomic bomb." But say it in French—"Apres moi, la bombe atomique;" it is much more "in." You must also hold that life is made up of separate happenings or episodes or that they are never to be tied together like notes of music into a melody. Compare a life to a picture puzzle which can never be put together., or to a motion picture reel which has been cut up into a thousand pieces, losing the plot. Be particularly fond of the world "nihilism" or -nothingism." Admire the "nothing art" in which there is a criss-

Go in for dancing in which one partner does not touch another, but stares absent-mindedly into space, as if to indicate that just as music is "nothing," and life is "nothing," so sex is nothing but a jingle-jangle. Your neurosis will be "in" also if you wallow in your own wounds in a kind of self-torturing masochism. Gaze into the abyss of nothingness until the abyss talks back again to you. Speak into echoing mountain walls from which comes back the mockery of one's own voice.
NECESSITY This brings up the question: How to get "out" of the "in." The answer is by being under some kind of necessity. This necessity may be physical or spiritual. It is physical when one is under the penalty of living., such as many a daylabourer and the slum-dwellers of the world. In an affluent civilisation there is no physical necessity and unless one puts himself under a spiritual or moral necessity, he falls into boredom. The disciplined or self-controlled character exempt from outside necessity keeps himself normal, particularly by helping
his neighbour. The economic "in" people who are affluent retain sanity by finding the economic "out" people who are poor.
COMMON NEED During World War I, a German soldier told of jumping into a shell hole with bayonets fixed for attack, but to his horror he found in this shell hole a wounded English soldier. His first reaction was to kill him, but when the English soldier pointed to his lips indicating that he was thirsty, he recognised the need common to all men and gave him water to drink. The wounded man then pointed to his pocket and asked him to take out a picture that was there. It was a picture of his wife and children. The unspeakable tenderness on the man's face made it clear that he was indicating a love of family before he died. Suddenly the enemy soldier was no longer an enemy, but the father of children, a husband and a fellow-being to whom he was related under the moral need of serving neighbour. There are many cases in our comfortable culture today, when victims could get "out" of a neurosis if they would only get their hands dirty and their feet wet by even putting an apple into the hand of a poor child.

A MARRYING PEOPLE
A
NYONE who has ever attended a wedding would
be aware of the general a ttitude of romanticism that surrounds the whole event. THE SPIRIT of a wedding can be safely general ised, for Americans are a marrying people. Ninety-five per cent of our population between the ages of 45-54 are or have been married at some time in their lives: and the future promises an increase in the statistic. Our average marriage age is youthful, and girls tend to marry earlier than boys.
Let's not, however, be overly impressed with the statistics, for our divorce figures are also quite high, and are similarly on the rise. Moreover, there are more women of marriageable age than there are men, and with the slight difference of age at marriage, the prospect of continuing maidenhood is pressurising some young people into rather shaky unions. Not too surprisingly, a higher than average proportion of school dropouts are also marriage dropouts, adding significantly to the divorce rates.
Working Mothers One of the interesting phenomena related to our marriage patterns is the female employment picture. Young women are benefited by greater educational opportunities, allowing them to find

interesting and rewarding jobs in the pre-marriage years. The overall shortage in the labour force, and the increased demand in positions that are generally held by women — teaching, nursing, secretarial and managerial posts—are encouraging young brides to continue working until the first child arrives, while at the same time these conditions are attracting women to re-enter the labour force after the child-rearing years. As things go now, the first child arrives about a year and a half after marriage. Since girls marry at about age 21, even with five children two years apart in age, a woman might be back at her old job from age 38 on. The tendency to return to full-time employment before the last child is well situated in school presents serious problems, and is attempted by some despite the risks. At any rate, regardless of a woman's decision to return to work or not, the average couple can expect about 16 years together after the last child leaves home. No doubt these facts project towards more women working. It is time to encourage women to give their best efforts to marriage and parenthood, and to encourage employers to develop certain positions that will be available to women without endangering their role as wife and mother.
New Families Once a couple marries, their first inclination is to find their own "pad," and usually to plan for their first home. The dreams are being realised, with few young couples doubling up with their parents, and with large numbers owning their own homes relatively soon after marriage. Age 35 to 55 is the home-buying age, and the number of owner-occupied homes has increased by 114 per cent for the white population and by 153 per cent for the non-white population since
1940. Houses are less crowded than before and home equipment has risen substantially. We .still have a great deal of pow housing and a considerable amount of inequality of opportunity, but the trend towards family housing dovetails with the image of the independent family unit. The challenge remains to ensure greater opportunities for decent living conditions for all families in our nation. Better standards of living are reflected by our better diet, by the increased number of labour-savers found in our homes, and by the increased amount of leisure time we enjoy.
Poor Poorer A significant part of the explanation for our good standard of living is the relatively high average family income. Since 1947 the average family income has increased from about $4„200 to $7,200. The unfortunate aspect of this generally healthy picture is that while many families of moderate income have done better, the poor have also become poorer. All-out efforts to conquer poverty are helping somewhat, but there is still about the same amount of money available to the lowest income groups, and it has less effect in our inflated economy. Clearly, this remains a challenge to the conscience of our more affluent people. The future holds the promise of more people, more jobs, more money and more leisure. It also holds the prospect of more inequity and more problems. It is our constant responsibility tc exercise dominion over the present and to provide direction for the future, direction that will ensure a better and happier family life to all families. St. Finan, or Finnian, was an Irish saint of the 6th century. St. Finan's Bay on the Atlantic coast of Kerry is named in his honour as is Derrynane ( the oak-grove of Finan) the ancestral home of the O'Connells where the great Daniel O'Connell was born. St. Finan's father lived on Dingle Peninsula, Kerry, and it was here that the future saint spent his early years. After receiving Holy Orders he began f ounding churches and monasteries in various parts of Ireland but mostly in Kerry. Two of his most famous religious settlements there were at Innis. fallen and Muckross. Shown here is part of the ruined Abbey of Muckross, built on the site of St. Finan's monastery. It has been announced that the Irish government is to restore it to its ancient glory. The closing years of he saint's life were spent in journeying between his r eligious settlements and ministering to the poor. Some say he spent many of these years as Abbot of Clanmore. Anyway, after a long and arduous life, Finan passed to his reward and was interred on the island in Loch Currane near St. Finan's Bay. by ARTHUR O'LEARY

The priest's dismissal has led to a protest by Bishop Carlos Maria Cafferata of San Luis. The bishop said that he could not "conceal his surprise" that "administrative rationalisation" in the provincial government should begin with the sacking of Father Beltran, who also served as prison chaplain.
