ening diseases, especially for children, was polio or

infantile paralysis. FOR quite a long time the National Foundation — March of Dimes dedicated itself to raising funds for research and to massive educational programmes to help combat the disease and bring some measure of help to its victims. The development of the Salk and Sabin vaccines have tremendously reduced the danger of polio—at least in epidemic proportions. These discoveries raised questions about the purpose and

e xistence of the National Foundation.

The professional staff and the vast network of volunteers who had worked so hard to conquer polio had learned a great deal, however, and the victory merely pointed the March of Dimes in another direction.

KNOWLEDGE NEEDED

THE experience of the struggle to o vercome the threat of polio led to the conviction that one of the greatest supports of any disease is ignorance. It is a curious thing, but the March o f Dimes people found that great ignorance existed even in regard to pregancy and childbirth, and that many birth defects and children's diseases are attributable to ignorance or misinformation in the parents. Science is rapidly finding the causes of many complications of pregnancy, and it is then a quick step to diagnosis, treatment and control.

The combined efforts of two British firms and considerable research have produced a new vacuum sweeper which will play a major part in combatting one of the biggest problems in hospitals — germ-laden dust. The powerful cleaner works on the normal suction principle but al l dust and small debris collected from w ard and corridor floors passes between a battery of "death ray' ultra violet lights which means instant death to the germs which cause most cross infection trouble's in hospitals today. The VA-1 is a pure research craft which was built to provide information and design data which will be used in the construction of commercially practical hovercraft. The VA-1's successors, VA-2 and VA-3 are already constructed. VA -2 is a small craft, carrying four or five people, with a speed of 40 knots. In addition to being used for demonstrations in remote parts of the world to prospective hovercraft operators, it will have immediate applications as a fast executive transport over difficult terrain where existing types of vehicles cannot operate. With a cruising speed of 70 miles per hour on land or water the VA-3 will be capable of carrying 24 passengers or two tons of cargo.

The town of Foix, France, sprang up in the 10th century round the grave of St. Volusian who suffered martyrdom nearby. Shown here is Foix Castle on its lofty rock with the Church of St. Volusian below it. Within is the tomb of the martyr. Volusian was a 5th century Archbishop of Tours. The invading Franks troubled the Gothic King Alaric II. He suspected that the good Archbishop w as dealing secretly with the enemy so he exiled him. Not content with this his persecutors followed him southwards and put him to death here in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. The town that grew around the saint's grave became the capital of an independent state which remained such until its annexation by France 350 years ago. Its neighbour — Andorra — has fared better. N Indian Protestant clergyman, speaking at a service in Cochin, India, urged Catholics and Protestants in India to set up joint committees to co-ordinate work of common interest. Pointing out that the image of divided Christendom weakened the impact of both the Catholic and Protestant traditions, the Rev. J. Russel Chandran commented that India's non-Christian governments "will laugh at us" because of the Catholic-Protestant split. The clergyman, president of the United Theological College in Bangalore and second vice-president of the World Council of Churches, also criticised Catholics' weak knowledge of the decrees of the Second Vatican Council. He urged close study of the Council's decisions as a spur to Indian ecumenism. Dr. Chandran urged the end of Catholic barriers to mixed marriages and predicted that by 1971, ecumenism in India would lead to the formation of one Protestant Church, divided into northern and southern pro vinces.
