M and enthusiasm of their adherents. This
will be true of our Catholic Education System. State aid alone will not make it flourish or maintain its standard, but will only make its survival in some form more likely. What happens to our schools will, depend on the effort and interest we take in them. Somewhere along the line more of us must start to take a real interest in our schools. Already it is too late in some places. How few parishes have sought out the facts and made themselves conversant with the problems. It is past time that we stopped thinking that convents and schools support and run themselves. It is not quite but very nearly past time to save our system—but to do this we will have to be its champions.
WHAT CAN WE DO? We can take an active interest. We must continue really caring whether our system survives or not. We have shown that we really do care by our magnificent response to the call for a campaign on the material level to influence the State. How naive to think that this is all that we need to do to survive! How tragic that this could be the thought of many! How do the people who have no convent school now feel? Alert ourselves that this can and maybe will happen to all of us. This is a real catastrophe that has already come to us. Pray God we can all see the urgency and reality of things as they already are—not as we might think they could be. Don't say, "This couldn't happen in our parish." This has already happened "in our parish" for a substantial number of our people.
WHAT IS THE EXTENT OF OUR FAITH? What do we believe? God can help us?
Do we believe that
If we have this much faith, then let us rally t o the call of this Crusade and show this faith. Showing that we believe in God will help us if our request for help is adequate. Now is one of the times we greatly and desperately need this help and save and guide and strengthen our Education System. Surely for those of us who benefited from this system and had a Catholic education it is just and right to give the same to our children and selfish and wrong to deny them of it. For those of us who did not benefit this way, is it not a great hope that our children will be able to do so? Is it not our duty to make some sacrifice towards this end? Of our responsibilities in life, I think the education of our children is one of the greatest. No parent can shed this responsibility. All they can do is ask some teachers in some school to help in some phase of this educating. When I stand before God in judgment, if I blame any shortcomings in the educating of my children on the Church or the State. I doubt that this will be reason enough to let me off with a caution! What a great scope there is for God's help in the sphere of education — individually to us as parents and jointly to us in our Education System! What a great need there is for this help! We earnestly beseech every member of our Catholic community to face up to the peril of the situation today. We are a shrinking group of Christians in an increasingly pagan community. How much of our Faith has been transferred from God to material things? Have we, as a total Catholic community., enough Faith left to rally to the call of this Crusade—a call to jointly beg the Holy Spirit for guidance to protect and prosper one of the mainstays of our Christian community as we know it now? Let us show that we deserve the relative abundance of priests that God's Providence has given us in this country by appreciating the miracle of the Mass on this one other day than Sunday. Grasp the opportunity to use this great power for our own beneut. Join our Crusade to the Holy Spirit to Save Our Schools and perhaps ourselves as well. We pray that the risk of misunderstandings and dissension between ourselves may be minimised by this Crusade, that patience, tolerance and charity in our attitudes may be enhanced, and that the effect of our hoped-for 10,000 Crusaders at Mass every Friday may make Us more truly brothers in Christ.

Formerly the principal of St. Philip's Regional High School( to be known as Servite College), Father Ryan is the Provincial Superior of the Western Province of the Servite Community in America. Thirty children from the Italian school in Fremantle were given a Christma s party on board the Achille Lauro when the liner berthed at the passenger terminal. The children , including ten orphans, were given a Christmas party of ice-cream and cakes in the first class passeng ers' dining room. Several of these are well enough prepared to be ordained within the next few months. ITERATURE is full of the contrast of characters described in terms of "spirit.'
FOR EXAMPLE, "he has the Victorian spirit," meaning he belongs to the last century, or "he has the spirit of a rebel," or "a spirit of kindness." How does it happen that psychology has missed this way of describing personhood? Partly because in its history, it stresses body more at one moment, and mind at another. At one moment we had BEHAVIOURISM, which identified man with an animal or with a machine; he was merely a creature of stimulus and response, with little freedom and responsibility. The other extreme was ANGELISM, which made the mind or soul everything; man was just a thinker. The

Understand Ourselves true answer is that the THE union of body and mind
constitutes a person. So vitally related are they that our psychosomatic medicine takes account of the fact that our thinking affects our body, and our body affects our thinking. The very word "psychosomatic" is taken from two Greek words—one meaning mind, the other body: "psyche" and "soma." Ulcers can be caused by undue worry or tension, and, on the other hand, it is difficult to write poetry with a migraine headache.
Our purpose here is not to develop the close interaction of body and mind, but rather to transfer the problem to the realm of character. How does one person differ from another? Not only in his inheritance, or the body which he inherited from his parents, as well as the peculiar bend of his mind. These are differences beyond our control. But is there not a difference which is wholly of our own making, stamped with the consequences of our decisions, and which constitutes the sum of our reactions of body and mind?
Body And Soul is the character of WHAT any one of us except the
result of the primacy given to the flesh,
or the primacy to the mind, the emphasis we put on emotions as against thinking, or habits we contracted which made our will powerless to break. Just as an electric spark will convert two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen into liquid water, so we begin to take on a distinct personality, character, temperament, mood or singularity, thanks to the interaction of body and mind through the exercise of freedom. We understand ourselves only if we abandon the opposing of the body to the mind, the sexual to the spiritual, the world of religion, art and poetry to the world of economics„ sports and cooking. We are what we are through the psyche and the corporal. Hence, the way we study, work, play, think, amuse ourselves — the entire complexity of our daily lives—produces in us what in the Scripture was called "bowels," and what we might call "character," or "personality," or what was often called "heart." Next week, we shall further develop this study of character and the "spirit" of a person.

Can We Create Life? T HE recent successful effort at Stanford University to
p roduce the living molecule, D.N.A., is certainly an important scientific achievement.
A LTHOUGH it is only one step along the road of scientific discovery, its importance lies in the fact that man has now been able to combine the proper chemical components, to place the compound in the proper c ircumstances, and to thereby produce an organism that has much to do with the life process.

The fact is certainly noteworthy, but the implications and future possibilities are even more important. Contrary to some popular misconceptions, this doesn't mean that man is almost ready to relieve God of His role as the Creator, nor does it mean that we are now ready to produce a human person by the proper combination of chemicals. Leaving such assumptions aside, however, this particular landmark holds great significance for the maintenance of life and health and it brings us closer to conquering various diseases.

FOR example, our knowledge of genetics can supply us with very accurate information about the possibility of a specific couple giving birth to a retarded or deformed child. Accurate knowledge of this type can be humanly shattering to some people. In the face of such knowledge, some would see abortion as the only reasonable solution.
On the other hand, the genes determine the blueprint of the individual human person, and a further knowledge of the working of D.N.A. on human genes may give man the ability to predetermine a person's size, sex or hair colour.
But there is More to it than that. The person who places a high value on human life sees a potentiality here, a great and marvellous good. If he believes in God, the value is enhanced by his recognition of the child's place in God's love and overall plan for mankind. The theist also recognises the r esponsibility of other men to open themselves to accept and support the less fortunate members of the human family.
The relevance of such discoveries to the life process should not be underestimated. Medical science is faced today with tremendous ethical problems. and the physician will continually face situations in which his judgment will have much to do with the continuation of life or its termination. Much as these discoveries open up new horizons for research in the natural sciences, and much as the scientists are confident of finding answers to their questions, the critical problems are theological and philosophical.
Finally, although the possession of such knowledge faces us with certain problems, it also promises continued scientific progress and discovery to offset the possibility of deformity and mental retardation.
WHAT IS LIFE?
THE essential question is—What is Life? This immediately raises the further questions as to what man is and the value and significance of any man's life to the family of man. It projects beyond the actuality of existence to the matter of a man's destiny. Medical researchers and doctors used to be caught up almost entirely on the discovery of the proper medicine or the proper therapy to combat disease. Now the concentration is on the discovery of

F ancy M eat L oaf THE meat loaf is an excellent dish if you plan to feed a large group economically. If a little extra time is taken to decorate the loaf, its appearance and flavour will make it a firm favourite with guests or family. Ingredients: lilt,. mince meat I onion 1 egg pepper and salt cayenne pepper breadcrumbs 1 tablespoon tomato sauce 1 tablespoon parrnensan cheese Method: Place mince meat in a mixing bowl. Add to it a chopped onion, pepper and salt, cayenne pepper, parmensan cheese and tomato sauce. Mix until all ingredients are blended together. Add egg. Add enough breadcrumbs to ensure the I mixture holds firm. Using a shallow baking dish, spread i mixture to make a square loaf, putting ledges firmly in place. By using foil on .1 1which to place the loaf, the task of serving will be made easier. Do not cover loaf with foil, as the top will not brown. Decorate top. DOUBLEVIEW.—A group of three boys and tive girls meet each week at Doubleview for informal .discussions and a general study of "The Book of Genesis," taking a small section each week to "delve" into. Father Barton attends the discussions and helps the group in obtaining the correct translation of certain parts of the book and there have developed some very interesting discussions as a result. Four of the group are schoolteachers and two are tertiary students. Any young person interested in joining the discussions is very welcome and can do so by contacting John Ewing, of 91 Bradford Street, Mt. Lawley. The discussion nights have recently been changed to Fridays for a while. Later this year the group hope to make a study of "Exodus." Norway was once a Catholic nation. Today most Norwegians are Luther• ans. The few Catholic who remain have in late years revived the memory of this 13th century saint. T horfinn was a native of Trondheim, Norway, who became Bishop of Hamar. He was a witness to the Tonsberg Agreement of 1277. This was an accord between King Magnus VI and the Church confirming the freedom of episcopal elections and kindred matters. Some years later King Eric (whose wife, incidentally, was Princess Margaret of Scotland) repudiated the agreement and a fierce dispute between C hurch and State resulted. Three bishops were exiled one being Thorfinn of Hamar. After many hardships, including shipwreck, he made his way to Bruges in Belgium. Seen here is the city centre. Here he dwelt with the Cistercians who record that the exiled Norwegian was a kind, patient and generous man whose mild exterior covered a firm will against what he considered evil and ungodly St. Thorfinn died here at Bruges in 1285
