CatholicAnglican Wedding A Catholic was granted permission to marry a Protestant in the Anglican Cathedral at Oxford, England.

10.

Both, however, assurred Catholic authorities that any children will be brought up as Catholics. The marriage, witn special permission from the Vatican, took place in the Anglican cathedral here between Dr. Priscilla Fogarty, 24-yearold daughter of Prof. Michael Fogarty, wellknown Catholic sociologist and economist, and Dr. Matthew Stallard, 26, son of Canon Frederick Stallard, an Anglican clergyman. Canon Stallard con ducted the Anglican marriage service and Father John Crozier, a Catholic pastor in Oxford, read the Gospel and Collect, spoke and gave a blessing. The cathedral dean also gave a blessing. OFFICIAL STATEMENT In connection with the wedding Archbishop George P. Dwyer of Birmingham issued a special statement: "The essential requirement for marriage is the exchange of consent by bride and groom," the s tatement said. "However, when a Catholic marries the Church normally requires for validity that the priest officiates at the marriags as official witness of the Church. This is to safeguard the sacramental validity of Christian marriage. "Since Canon Stallard was naturally anxious to celebrate the marriage of his own son, the bishop of the Catholic bride laid the matter before His Holiness the Pope, who, in view of these exceptional circumstances and on hearing that the Catholic upbringing of any children was assured, readily relaxed the Church's law to allow him to do so. CONSULTATION "It is not possible to have a joint ceremony in the strict sense in such cases, since both civil and canon law require that only one person may officiate at a marriage. However, the parish priest of Holy Rood Church, Oxford (Father Crozier) was present at the marriage and added a prayer and blessing. "It is to be hoped that at a future date an ecumenical service may be composed for this kind of occasion. This will involve consultation and agreement at national level between the Catholic Church, the Church of England, and Free Churches, the Secretariat for Christian Unity and probably the civil authorities. "No doubt the mixed commission which the (Anglican and Catholic) Churches have set up to deal with the question of mixed marriages will al so consider the provision of a suitable form ca service."

BUNBURY FRIENDSHIP WEEKEND. — Recently the Y.C.W. of Bunbury Diocese was host to nearly 450 young people at their annual Friendship Weekend. The motor car made it possible for these young people to travel great distances to attend the weekend and the generosity of the Bunbury families made the visitors' stay most enjoyable. Some 17 billets were provided and of these nearly a hundred were taken by Perthites. The others came from Northam, Katanning, Kojonup, Albany„ Manjimup and other places. Many new friendships resulted from this and many renewed for those returning for yet another friendship weekend, having attended those of previous years. The highlight of the weekend was the Ball an Saturday night. Music was provided nonstop by two local orchestras and the ballroom appropriately decorated. with a "Modern-Set" decor. On Sunday morning the traditional Y.C.W. Mass was celebrated b? the Diocesan Chaplain of Bunbury, Father Dwyer, in the Cathedral. In addressing the congregation he welcomed the visitors from Perth and the surrounding parishes of the Bunbury Diocese and pointed out the impprtant role the Young Christian Workers have as Apostles of Christ. The friendship weekend was an example of their zeal. Following Mass, a picnic lunch and basketball match were held in the grounds of St. Mary's in South Bunbury, after which everyone returned home, tired yet refreshed by a most enjoyable and valuable stay in Bunbury.

Y.C.W. DIOCESAN RALLY.—"The greatest time for influence is in leisure time," according to Miss Marie Duggan, a recently returned Mission Volunteer from New Guinea, addressing delegates at a recent Y.C.W. Rally at Kalamunda. Some 90 delegates from branches around Perth attended the rally, the theme of which was "Christian Reflection," centred around t he two main topics—free time and the International Movement ot Y.C.W.'s. The day began with delegates in group discussions on "free time." Taking actual situations arising in leisure, the groups reflected on the Christian attitude and discovered that very often there are contradictions to this approach in everyday life. In closing the session on "Free Time," Miss Duggan, who is a teacher, related some of her lay missionary activity 'while teaching with the missions in New Guinea. She pointed out that lay volunteers on the missions carry out normal daily activities as they would in Perth —teachers teach, agriculturalists work on the farms and, as in Perth„ they have their leisure time. It was during this free time that the volunteer could be an influence with the local inhabitants. The reason for this is that the environment is more relaxed and one gets to know the people better. Miss Duggan added, rather forcefully, that this applies also in Perth. Everyone has a missionary role to play and can exploit this to the fullest during their free time. The rally continued after lunch with eight branches reviewing their group activities for the year. This provided a cross-sectional view of activity by the whole diocese. It was reported that Y.C.W. dances are run to provide "low-cost, enjoyable entertainment for the youth of the districts and at the same time setting a good example and providing activity to fill in free time." The dances also develop friendship among the young people who attend regularly. As a result of the Internatonal Enquiry, examples were given of the concern some branches have for the welfare of Aborigines and the problems facing migrants in Australia. Considerable discussion arose on the problems facing the Italian newcomers to Western Australia: their language difficulties and their cultural and family differences. Popular among the Y.C.W. services is sport. The football and basketball teams are run by the Y.C.W. members and leaders themselves. thus helping them to accept responsibility. Through organised competition many young people are influenced by a Christian environment. One branch reported that it is reviewing the question of under-age drinking and it was evident in discussion that there are mixed feelings on moves to lower the legal drinking age to 18 years. Assisting the parish priest in his work proved rewarding for one branch that had worked on compiling the parish census.

Through visiting people in the district, they were able to make new contacts and thus extend their influence further. In closing this review, Dick Finucane, vicepresident of the Diocesan Executive, expressed the need to reflect on a branch activity, that this action only has value if it can acquire a Christian significance. The closing session of the rally was devoted to the International Campaign. Michael Jones, chairman of the International Committee, outlined the campaign to the delegates. The Y.C.W.'s international concern begins in Perth with its migrants, its Asian students and our Aborigines. In addition, it is concerned with the developing nations of Asia to which Australia sends extension workers to help these peoples realise their dignity and their destinies. These young volunteers need the material and spiritual support of everyone in Australia. Thus the need for the International Appeal. A surprise visitor to the Rally was Bill Hebb, the National President of the Y.C.W. Summing up the International Campaign, Bill expressed the need to accompany the appeal with education to make people aware of the struggles facing the peoples of developing nations. The Rally ended with Father O'Brien, the Diocesan Chaplain, thanking delegates for their efforts over the past year and pointing out the unique role they have to play in the world around them. He expressed the hope that they continue in this work in the coming year. A barbecue-tea followed at Marian Lodge to the relaxed accompaniment of high-fidelity pop music. The evening was highlighted by the singing of Christmas Carols by all in keeping with the festive season. YOUTH CONCERT. — Approximately thirty young people from the Beaconsfield parish are at the moment rehearsing for a variety concert to be put on early in February. A number of comedy sketches are in the process of being written and being at the hands of such people as Maureen Wesley are expected to be quite a riot. The concert will include quite a show of dancing and folk numbers. Most of the rehearsals are being held at the home of Rose Bax, the Y.C.W. president in the parish, and a lot of fun and laughs are at present the main part of the rehearsals. The final "staging" of the concert will be the combined results of Maureen Wesley's ideas and the Y.C.W. enquiry on Time for Living, which showed the need for some social activity for the whole parish to enjoy. Adults will be involved in helping with the costumes and make-up and, of course, their attenance at the concert will be fully welcomed. The proceeds will be divided and go towards the Y.C.W. group, International Y.C.W., the parish and the local St. Vincent de Paul Society. The "show" will last about three hours and the stage will be the basketball courts near the church, as quite a crowd is expected to attend. Full advertising will start after the New Year and everyone is welcome to come along. A New Year's Eve party will be held also at the home of Rose Bax, of 74 Solomon Street, Beaconsfield, and a sneak rehearsal of some of the folk song numbers just may be included in the evening's entertainment. Otherwise plenty of music and fun is assured for the beginning of 1968 and all boys and girls, including school-leavers, are invited to come along. The Y.C.W. girls' leaders' group are resuming their weekly meetings on January 23 and the girls will begin contacting for a sub-group to start up from that date. CHRISTMAS GREETINGS. — The Diocesan Chaplain and Boys' and Girls' Executives extend to all Y.C.W.'s the peace and joy of Christmas and wish to thank them for their support and help during the year. NEW YEAR'S EVE RIVER CRUISE. — The combined Y.C.W. Social Committee of Palmyra, Applecross and Melville are holding a River Cruise on New Year's Eve. The S.S. Perth will depart from the Barrack Street Jetty at 8 p.m. and arrive back at 1 a.m. There will be a short stop of about one hour at Point Walter for a barbecue—the meat, etc., will be supplied and drinks available. Tickets are available at the Y.C.W. Office. Continuous dancing and festivities will ensure a terrific evening for all who attend.

Danger In The Future THE dangers and difficulties the Church faces in trying to answer the questions of modern man were stressed by tilt German bishops in a letter to all who have been charged by the Church witil the preaching of the faith. The letter was approved at the German Bishops' Conference at Fulda in September, but only released in December. Noting the many changes brought about by tai natural sciences and technology, the bishapi s tated: "Man subjugates the world in an up_to. now undreamed of measure: he lives more ant more in a world largely made by himself. Titi4 affects and determines his thinking and actions?,

FORCEFUL QUESTION Despite these scientific advances, they sajA "there still lurks the question, as forceful as ever: What is the meaning of all this, why is mail here?" Many wonder if the Church is supplying ask, quate answers to these questions, the bishops said, and then went on to state that the certitude once felt "regarding the substance and dimension of doctrine seems no longer to exist in certain, spheres." The bishops pointed out in their letter that the Second Vatican Council "undertook the great effort of facing up to the present and preparing for the future." They admitted that "this under. taking was bound to cause uneasiness in the lift of the Church." Another problem. the German bishops said, Is that the Church opened herself to the world "at a moment when she herself is intensely involved in the task of a deep self-examination."

PATIENCE REQUIRED The bishops said they realise that this self. examination is considered unnecessary and int. prudent by many, and stressed that the Church will need great patience and honest dialogue within itself before it can adequately formulate the substance of its teaching for modern man. They warned against expressing personal opinions as though they are of the substance of the faith. The bishops also stated what they felt to tie their twofold responsibilities towards the Vatican Council: "We must acknowledge without reservation the innovations it brings" and "understand and demonstrate the innovations as an extension" of the substance of the faith that has been trans. mitted through the centuries. In their letter the bishops also stressed the Reel Presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in OA Eucharist. On the liturgy, they declared: "A liturgy considered merely as a social ritual, a social affirmation of Christian brotherhood, will not achieve itS real object: God's glorification and through that the salvation of men." .11

* SUNDAY

I am very pleased to see so many entries for the Christmas Word Competition roll ing in. Next week I will a nnounce the winners in both sections and the lucky boys or girls will r eceive one dollar as the prize. I hope you all had a wonderful t ime at Christmas, and received many lovely presents. I'm sure you did. Now that all the festivities are over we have another year to look f orward to. I wish you all a very happy new year, good luck in school, and lots of happiness. We must all pray that God will l ook after us throughout the coming months. Now is the time to make your new year resolutions and I suggest a few for you. Resolve to study hard in school; to help mum and dad around the house; to try hard to be cheerful and happy for the benefit of others, and to love God with all our hearts. They are just a few suggestions, but if you adopt them, I'm sure you'll have a "Happy New Year." God bless you,

ST. ALMACHUS

Phil K eogh CHEMIST 274 Cambridge St Wembley - 87 3984

Rome's mighty Colosseum — there was seating for 87,000 — was built in the decade following the martyrdom of Ss. Peter and Paul. A fter the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70 they brought thousands of Jews to Rome in chains. They were put to forced labour constructing the huge amphitheatre. But the Colosseum is everlastingly associated with the innumerable Christian martyrs who were here mangled by wild beasts to entertain the pagan Romans. The last Christian to die here was St. Almachus, or Telamachus, whose feast day is New Year's Day. When this monk from the East came to Rome it was nominally Christian. However, although people being "thrown to the lions" was a thing of the past, gladiatorial fights were still being held. A lmachus stormed into the arena to stop the bloodshed. The mob, infuriated by his interference, stoned him to death. The upshot of this tragedy was that the Emperor suppressed gladiatorial shows for ever more; St. Almachus had not died in vain. by ARTHUR O'LEARv
