OLDER Ties PERSON That Bind. . .
by Father T. McHugh
The Older Generation N YEARS PAST it was not uncommon to think of the family as including people from

the same family unit. IN some ways this was the consequence of the extended kinship family structure; it reflected the customs and norms of the various immigrant groups, and it was, in many cases, the natural consequence of economic factors, normal expectation, and the only possible solution
for caring for older people. Very often father and son shared the family business, people didn't move too far from their birthplace, the closeness between the generations was stronger, and many a person grew up with the conviction that residences for the aged were somehow an insult to human dignity. The home for older citizens was regarded as the "poor house," and "living off welfare" was seen as a fate only slightly better than dying.
Undoubtedly things have changed drastically. The economic structure of our society includes more and better retirement benefits, Medicare assures older -people of proper health care, people live longer and healthier and are more accustomed to their independence. Mobility separates people from "where they were born and raised," and from the family in which they grew up.
on youth, as the gap a mong generations widens,, as human living becomes more complex and tensionproducing, what is to be the role of the older person? Increasingly a man may retire in his mid-fifties, and by then his own family is grown up and quite independent. What happens then? Is the emphasis on youth, drive and sophistication only going to make the life of the older person more isolated and inconsequential?
inability to understand today's problems often leads them to take an overly pess j.. mistic and authoritarian attitude that provokes tension. On the other hand, their own children, caught up in the effort to raise their families, tend to ignore or overlook the older folk, or even to assume an air of sympathy or forbearance.
It almost seems that we have concentrated so much on the lower side of the generation gap — i.e., those under 25 versus those over 25, that we remain unaware of the tensions between those under 50 and those over 50. Yet, in many families a great deal of personal unhappiness results from the misconceptions and false expectations that the members of each generation try to live up to. It may be profitable to examine some of these problems.
NEEDED
NEW
THESE tensions can be neutralised when the older couples still maintain their own r eisdence, but when they live with their m arried sons or daughters, as often happens when one or the other has passed on, the tensions tend to proliferate. This brief description only scratches the surface, but it seems to emphasise the importance of re-evaluating the role and position of older people in a society that tends to glorify youth. Retirement communities, and relocation in the moderate climates of the southern section of our country, are some solutions, but available only to those with some financial resources. Increased leisure activities also help the older people to structure a life for them_ selves. Perhaps what is needed more is that our society find ways to tap the energies and talents of older people, without forcing on them the fast pace of today's living. Undoubtedly, a clearer corn_ munication between the middle generation and the older generation can smooth out some of the problems. People are retiring earlier and being "older" longer, and society needs their Discovering what and contribution. how they contribute will be challenging and somewhat difficult, but it will also prove valuable to themselves, their own offspring, and to the whole human community.
V ALUES
Today we see the development of younger families, and so we also have younger old people, a younger generation of grandparents. The fast pace of present-day living easily shakes older people, and even though they have been a part of the so-called "rat race," they are more inclined to slow down and enjoy things. Yet, with time on their hands, with adequate financial resources, they can easily become dissatisfied with complete retirement. On the one hand they enjoy visiting their married children and their grandchildren, but they don't always understand the undercurrents of our present-day society. They tend to draw on their own experience and knowledge, to distrust progress, and sometimes attempt to take over a bit in the running of their grown children's lives.

News In Brief
ITH concelebration of Mass by several priests becoming more common, I have found a lot of people still puzzled about the significance of it. Christ redeemed us only once—in His offering at the Last Supper and Calvary—and He is not, in any sense, crucified again at Mass. But He has made it possible for us, who live many years after the event, to join with Him in offering the same sacrifice. Appointed as Christ's special representative, the priest offers the Mass in Christ's name.
But there is really only ONE Mass—that which Christ offered Himself—and the reoffering made by a priest is the same whether he makes it alone or in unison with fellow priests. Each is Christ's representative, and the offering made by each individual priest is of the same importance whether he says Mass alone or whether he concelebrates. Concelebration emphasises that the priests' offering and Christ's offering are united, though separated in time; and it also stresses the unity of the priesthood—that all priests act on behalf of Christ, and not in their own name. At a concelebration one priest acts as "principal concelebrant," and performs most of the actions of the Mass—but all the priests say together the essential, central parts of the Mass, and all say the words of consecration. They are not merely assisting the principal celebrant, as a deacon does at High Mass, but each is really celebrating Mass.

BOOK FOR COMMENTATORS:
MANY books for commentators at Mass have been published, but none that has so much to recommend it as "The Commentator," by Alfred Longley (World Library of Sacred Music, $6.55 Aust.). Commentaries are given not only for Sundays, but for all the ferias of Lent, major feasts rogation days, etc., and the whole is printed on quarto-sized paper. Most important, though, it comes in a good plastic loose-leaf ring binder. This allows different commentaries, programmes of hymns„ prayer of the faithful petition, etc., to be inserted if desired. It also allows for changes, as obsolete pages can easily be replaced. The commentaries themselves are both adequate and brief.

JUNIOR READERS • Dear Boys & Girls Thank you very much to Carmel and Catherine Migro and Monica Brown for the lovely Christmas Cards. I hope you all have a very Happy Christmas also. Several members have been sending in the names and ages of their l ittle brothers and sisters to become members of the Junior Record. Unfortunately most of them are under f our years of age, and that is the minimum age for membership. When the little ones are four years old, then I would be only too p leased to welcome them to the club. Whi le I'm talking about ages I might add that 14 years is the maximum age for membership. Thank you to all the boys and girls who have sent in their entry in the colouring competition. In a few weeks we will be closing the competition and announcing the winners, so if any of you haven't coloured in the picture yet, I suggest you do it very soon and send it to me. Entries for the Christmas Word Competition are rolling in and there are some very good ones. This competition was only for the Christmas number and will not be repeated, so get your entry in soon. I hope that you are all enjoying your holidays and being very good for mum and dad. God bless you, B ROTHER JUNIPER.
