Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses • • week we dealt with the amount of brokenness in the world today —broken homes, broken minds

will always be love for the lovable, but there will never be love for the unlovable unless we begin to love them for God's sake. Thus we are brought back again to religion and to God Whose New Testament definition of His essence is: "God is Love."

priests regard an unresponsiveness in a patient or a visitor a personal insult, thus rendering void all future therapy? How often, too, parents will tell their children that they have insulted their dignity, and have lost the right to their love?

Fl

But to be a kind of sponge in which one absorbs the insults like water, or to be a blotting paper taking up the blotches and black smudges of others' lives, to be the thirsty, parched tongue which reaches for the dregs of bitterness at the bottom of the chalice, to be what the Russians call "born fools" who take on the punishment which would be meted out to others, and not return that bitterness so as to diminish the content of the world's bitterness, to have hands ferreted with nails out of anti-love, and still yearn to raise them to bless, and being unable, then with the tongue to utter words of forgiveness . . . this is the highest form of caring.

There are those who believe that there is One Who cares and picks up the ''broken reed" and breathes new life into it. Then the SECOND stage is to those who are unlovable, to give and expect nothing in return. There is no cure for want of love, but love. There

THE Third Stage of caring is not. .when there is promise or hope in the one we love, or when there is someone as worthless as falling leaf„ but rather caring in the face of hostility, hate and anti-love. Reading the mouthings which issue from the volcanos of hate and craters of blasphemy in the press today, one knows there is a deeper dimension than hate: it is anti-love. It is hell. What is hell, but hating love? Caring in the face of such hostility is very rare. How many doctors, psychiatrists, teachers and

CARING FOR, THE BROKEN THIS is the Love which • conquers anti-love. It is the Love of God which does not say as do we mortals: "I love you," for tl* makes the "I" that which determines and limits love. Rather it is God who says: "You are My love." This kind of love is not retractable as is the first; it is like a breath whici i once breathed out, is never takeil again because it poisons. Such love LI eternal; it has nothing to frustrate it; it exists for the benefit of the other, whe ther that other be true or false. Perhaps this kind of love assumes there is a Calvary in the very heart of God, and I believe there is,

court fights to stop the Indian government from deporting him from Goa now has to fight his own way before the Supreme Court of India to keep his case alive. A judge in Panjim, Goa, has refused to forward the issue to the high court. The proceedings involve Goan-born Monsignor Sebastiao Francisco Monteiro, who chose Portuguese citi zenship following the Indian t akeover of 1961 that ended Portuguese rule in Goa. He refused to register as a foreigner and was imprisoned for 35 days in 1966 for a further refusal to comply with the deportation order. He lost an appeal in August. Now Indian Judge V. S. Jetley. judician commissioner of Goa', who made the August ruling, has rejected the priest's application for a further appeal. So Monsignor Monteiro says he has decided to apply directly to the Supreme Court of India. Judge Jetley, rejecting the application, maintained that the Indian Supreme Court was no ordinary court of criminal appeal, that cases sent to it had to be handled sparing and with care. have carefully considered the arguments

HOLY NAME NOTES

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . . ARALUEN SOCIAL WEEKEND. — After many enquiries this year for another combined social weekend, the Y.C.W. Standing Committee have agreed to organise one on the January long weekend. An able committee of enthusiastic leaders from around the diocese have combined to make this event as good as last year's. Dennis Tierney, the committee's treasurer, is being very Scottish to keep the price the same at approximately $6 a head. Our secretary, Maureen Waddell, disclosed that the weekend will be from January 27 to 29, with a first-in-best-dressed preference. To put your name down on the list a $1 deposit is required —so please hurry, only a 110 girls and 110 boys, plus chaplains, are being catered for. Guido, the chairman says no bribes accepted, but there is no harm trying. Rhonda Kingsbury is leading the hike, seeing that she mapped the route last Sunday, but she informs us that it is not too long and you have to bring your bathers. Jan Coen and Penny Snadden are organising Saturday evening. I'm not sure what form it will take, butIheard a whisper of a -Fancy Dress Dance" with prizes, plus organised games. Anyway, knowing the imagination of those two, it should be quite a night. Our favourite chaplain, Father J. O'Brien, will again be saying Mass at the conclusion of the hike. He will be assisted by the "Foreman" and 200 voices to some moving folk tunes. Judy Marshall, our chief bottle-washer, again be delegating jobs at meal-times-I know you will give her your support. See you at Araluen, January 27-29—it's the ideal place to recuperate after the Christmas and New Year festivities. INSTITUTIONAL VISITATION.—Last Sunday evening a party of Y.C.W.'s, led by Jim Stewart and Lyn Hackett, concluded the "Riverbank" visitation for this current year to Child Welfare Centres. This group of young people who do this one night a week year in and year out, can be proud of the work they have done this year and can take their thanks in the words of Our Lord: "If you visit any one of these you visit Me." Lyn Hackett leaves with our thanks for a job well done, and to Margaret Maynard our support this coming year in her new position.

BUNBURY FRIENDSHIP WEEKEND. — Some 130 young Y.C.W. people have accepted the invitation extended by our cousins in Bunbury to attend their Ball on Saturday night, December 9. On Sunday at 10 a.m. a Youth Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral, followed by an exhibition game of men's basketball, Perth v. Bunbury„ barbecue lunch and social afternoon. This is an excellent opportunity for Christian young people to mix socially, to meet and make new friends, to support, encourage and, most important, to share. We remind all drivers to observe the new speed limit of 65 m.p.h. when driving to Bunbury. All people needing tickets and billets should go to the Y.tC.W. Office, Wellington Street, Bunbury, between 2 and 5 p.m. ST. JOACHIM'S DANCE.—The recent dance held by the Redcliffe Y.C.W. was by all ac counts very successful. With the support of a local youth group, the atmosphere was very relaxed and everyone seemed to have a good time. "The Group," from Melbourne, was a great attraction and about 320 young people attended and "made the most of them." Local groups also provided music and entertainment.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER + SIGN OF THE CROSS. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: I must prepare for the coming of Christ. How have I prepared thus far? SCRIPTURE READING: St. John, 1: 19-28. INSTRUCTION: John the Baptist is a model for us during this time of preparation for the coming of Christ. He said of Christ: We must decrease, He must increase in us. This can best be attained by receiving the Sacraments of Penance and the Holy Eucharist. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 11 .1. SIGN OF THE CROSS. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Advent means coming — the coming of Christ. How did He come and why? SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 3: 1-14. INSTRUCTION: Christ became man by being born of the Blessed Virgin in a stable at Bethlehem He became man in order to save us and found His Kingdom or Church. Through the liturgy each year Christ comes again, and in the season of Advent we must make s pecial preparation for His coming. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.

F RIDAY DECEMBER 15 4. SIGN OF THE CROSS. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Soon the Saviout will be here. Am I ready as Jesus and Mary were? SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew, 1: 18-25. INSTRUCTION: Mary the Mother of Jesus was prepared for the coming of Her Son God made Man by the Immaculate Conception. She is the perfect model for preparation for the coming of Christ. Her only wish was to do God's Will. As St. Joseph went about his daily work, he must have pondered with great joy on the coming of the Saviour, for the angel had said to him: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary, thy wife, unto thee, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AM) BLESSING: As for first day.

SATURDAY DECEMBER is SIGN OF THE CROSS. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Does the coming of Christ mean as much as it should to me? SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew, 11: 2-10. INSTRUCTION: A very saintly priest once said of himself with reference to meeting Our Lord in his daily life: I greet Him when I meet Him, and bless Rini when I understand. Christ comes to es often in our daily life, but ever so often we do not understand the manner of His coming. Just as the people of Bethlehem did not recognise Him and sent Him off with "there is no room," we either greet Christ or insult Him in the people we meet. Our Lord said: "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me." Let the time of Advent remind us of this. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 17 SIGN OF THE CROSS. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Rejoice for the Lord is near. SCRIPTURE READING: Philippians, 4: 4-7. INSTRUCTION: The theme of Paul's letter to the Philippians is joy because the Lord is near. This joy can only be heartfelt if we are living a true Christian life. Then, only will the joy of Christmas be corn. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.

evident during the summer months in several conferences and study groups. The most important perhaps of these was the inter-diocesan conference of priests. About fifty priests, secular and religious, came together from the, five dioceses of the country to discuss the pastoral problems of the area in the light of Vatican II. In the diocese of Port-de-Paix. entrusted to the Montfort Fathers, a two-day liturgical conference followed the annual retreat. In the month of August, the Catechetical Institute organised a summer course at the College Saint-Marital in Port-au-Prince. It was held for catechists (mainly nuns) who work in the provinces and cannot follow the normal courses during the year. More than a hundred attended the course. Also in August, in the diocese of Cap Haitien, 43 nuns belonging to eight different congregations followed a fortnight's course of initiation into- the Haitian mentality. From July 5 to 8 in Port-au-Prince there was also a pedagogical course attended by 235 teachers. And finally, in the spirit of "Populorurn Progressio," Professor Biyais. a Christian economist and colleague of Father Lebret, held in September, in the diocese of Cayes, a session entitled "Pastoral and Development" for the clergy, religious Brothers and nuns of the island. More than eighty attended. A fuller course along the same lines will be held in the same town of Cayes next April. These meetings, taking place after a difficult period in which certain dioceses were deprived of their bishops, have been extremely useful; they have broken the isolation imposed by the geographical conditions of the country, and have given new courage to the small group of missionaries, who face a very complex task.

Pontinak, Indonesia WITH the political revolution of Septembei, 1965, prospects for the Church brightened considerably in Indonesia, if only because of the lessening of the threat of communism. Catholics, along with other religious groups, will now have a far greater say in the reconstruction of the country. The number of Catholics in the Archdiocese of Pontianak increased by 5.700 in the past two years, bringing the total to 43,032. About 20 per cent of the Catholic population is Chinese. which corresponds to the percentage of Chinese in the general population. The number of catechumens is also satisfactory-6.137 at the end of June, 1967. To look after the needs of the people there are 45 priests (mostly Capuchins), assisted by 33 Brothers and 180 nuns. Five of the priests are Chinese and two are Indonesian; there are nine Indonesian Brothers; and among the Sisters there are 46 Indonesians and 47 Chinese. The majority of the foreign personnel have also taken up Indonesian citizenship. One of the main difficulties of the future will be the recruiting of sufficient personnel. In the past two years, two native priests have been ordained, and there are only seven senior seminarists preparing for the priest hood. With the vast area of the archdiocese ( 16,000 square miles), more personnel is ui gently needed. To offset the shortage of religious persoil ncl, great attention is paid to the training of lay catechists, of whom there are now 556 men and 201 women. There are some welleducated catechists from Java, and some students from the archdiocese have been sent to a special high school for catechists in Java. In the teacher training college a sound religious education is given, so that the teachers may be able to help afterwards as full-time or part-time catechists. One of the main difficulties, as usual, with catechists is that of finding the money to pay them worthwhile salaries. Among the problems facing the Church, one is that of the Moslems, who are now trying to use the present anti-communist mentality to make Islam the State religion. Another is the economic one of rising prices which have doubled in two years. And a third is the Chinese question. The Chinese (about 20 per cent of the population) tend to live apart from the Indonesians„ with their own language, residential areas and organisations. They are by far the richest section of the community, and politically they are inclined towards communism. One of the tasks of the Church will be to try to bring about a greater spirit of unity between the Chinese and Indonesians. BROTHER JUNIPER'S PAGE FOR

JUNIOR READERS . . . Dear Boys & Girls Will you have a crib in your house this Christmas? They can be made very simply and remind us throughout the festive season of the real meaning of Christmas: The Birth of Christ. All you need are some dolls, one in a blue cloak to represent ressed d and one in a brown cloak Lady, Our represent St. Joseph. Next a little to in white to reprewrapped doll, baby Jesus. child sent the Perhaps a shoe box, or something a bit larger would come in handy. Cover the box roughly with brown paper, and line it with straw. Place the dolls representing Our Lady and St. Joseph behind the child Jesus, who you can lie on the straw. Then if you have some little animals; c ows, sheep, etc., place them around al l facing in the direction of the baby Jesus. You could use your imagination to decorate the crib as you feel it should be. This is a very simple crib, and perhaps you may be able to make a much bigger or more impressive one. The important thing is that you have one to remind you that Christmas is the birthday of Jesus Christ. Try to spend a few moments of your time during your holidays and especially on Christmas Day, saying a few prayers in front of your crib as a birthday present to the baby Jesus. God bless you all, BROTHER JUNIPER.
