Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses • • • H ERE'S A BROKEN HEART FOR EVERY LIGHT ON BROADWAY." SO wrote Walter Winchell. Brokenness is one of the marks of our human situation, whether it be broken minds, broken homes, broken lives or broken bodies. No wall is so high that brokenness cannot climb over it. All the knowledge we pour into our brains, all the friendships we make and the cups we drink in gladness, even all the prayers we say, cannot erect a Babel Tower so high that the confusion of brokenness does not plant its flag. Archibald MacLeish felt crushed by the millions who were burned, crushed, broken and multilated: "For walking
round the world in the wrong skin, the wrong shaped noses." But what happens to all this brokenness? Does anyone care? Yes, there are some who care; they even love those alienated, frustrated, sad, moaning lives. THREE
DEGREES
OR
THREE
STAGES CAN BE FOUND IN THOSE WHO WILL GATHER UP THIS WOUNDEDNESS AND BROKENNESS. The First Degree of caring is found in those who never give up hope that others will mend. "A bruised reed He shall not break, and burning flax He shall not quench." The reed which the shepherd picked up and punched with holes in order to pipe a tune broken; so he threw it away. But there is One Who picks up that broken reed, breathes new life into it, and summons out some hidden, long-forgotten melodies.
EVEN the life most crushed has the power of self-
recovery through a loving re-creating Power. The metaphor of the burning flax makes one think of those who once were aflame, burning with zeal, giving light and warmth but now are languishing dull, "burnt out." All those weak resolutions, frail purposes which others would throw away because they contrasted so badly with the first fires, are seen as capable of burning again thanks to the breath of Someone or the re-kindling from the great central fire and heart of Love. One might as well try to frighten an acorn into an oak, as to frighten these bruised human reeds and ashen flax into burning. It takes light and heat from above to make the flower bloom, and it takes tenderness to make love find again its perfume. Such a One Who cares is not over us like the ancient schoolmaster with his rod, but as the gardener over tender shoots. No noisome pool or foetid swamp reeking with rottenness exists in the world that does not have the sun smile on it some time during the day.
Brokenness
THE Second Stage of caring is not based on hope arid promise and potentiality as in the example given above, but on a caring when there is seeming worthlessness. it is easy to love those who love us, but to claarlenktil nydn ft worth r esappep wirheos aa 11.o veintghorseequ of heart, Most of us thrive on reciprocated love; we receive and we give, but to give and receive nothing in return--such is to imitate God's love. There is nothing in any of us which makes us loveable to God, and yet He finds us all supremely lovable. This is because He puts some of His love into us, and we become very iov, able. Those who care in the face et uncaring, who give a coin to the one who asks, even though he is no good, imitate heaven's way of caring, it is possible that the only way to prove our worth is by loving the "worthless." In the next article we shall deal with the Third Way of caring and the conse. quences of caring.

Ties That Bind. .
NEW iEwpoINT v
by father T. McHugh
WHO IS TO BLAME?
W
E live in a time when society faces the individual with a great deal of tension and when more people seem to succumb to the strain of it all. DRINKING, alienation a n d emotional and mental breakdown seem to result from the inability of certain persons to
achieve some stability or security. As a consequence, more people are on nerve pills, the psychiatrists' offices are crowded, and far too often the effects of tension are spread to others. In many instances, the whole family is affected by the problems of one of its members.
A NEW viewpoint has recently been advanced in terms of treatd . iaggnsoosineg atnydp es of neurotic strain. The major proposition of this theory is that the family is a functioning system, and the problems of the individual should be analysed in the light of his or her relation to the family unit. If one or another member of the family shows signs of emotional imbalance, it is an indication that the family system is not f unctioning properly. In some ways this theory is not so new, since psychiastrists have always been concerned about the interaction among members of a family. A wife's r elationship to her husband, or a parent's attitudes towards a child have always been investigated to determine the source of emotional disturbance. The thing that is different in this new method is that the immediate focus of the counsellor's attention is the person's life in the family, rather than subconscious feelings or motivations. There is a great deal to recommend this methodology, not only to members of the psychiatric profession, but to married couples as well.
The psychiatrist has customarily dealt with his patient as an isolated individual. He has intensively investigated the patient's past life, and has attempted to identify personality traits that are symptoms or causes of the problem. The major effort has been to seek out the
GROUND RULES
NOT only is every family a separate unit in our society„ but each family operates, so to own its on ' speak, These rules. ground
ground rules have to be worked out by all members of the family to support each person, to assure each family member a sense of identity and security within the family circle. There should be a certain definition of roles, and also a periodic re-evalution of these roles to provide for maximal self-expression for each person. Husband and wife must continually r e-examine all aspects of their oval. relationship to each other, of their relationship to their children, of the children to each other. The major emphasis is on maintaining the delicate balance that provides freedom to each individual while maintaining the unity and solidarity of the family as a community of persons. The therapist, in applying this theory to the individual, wants to know how much stress and strain the family is under. Sometimes the person who feels most disturbed or insecure is the victim of a system breakdown. It is not the individual who has lost balance: rather it is the whole harmony of interpersonal relationships that is out of key. Restoring the balance or order enables the family to function harmoniously again as an integral unit. We are here faced with the realisation that a fuzzy togetherness is not the answer to family life, but a clearer examination and understanding of the concept of partnership as it touches on family relationships and interaction.

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . . On NATIONAL EXECUTIVE MEETING. Friday of last week Pat Dolan, the Girls' Y.C.W. president, left Perth to attend the Girls' National Executive Meeting in Melbourne over the weekend. Matters to be discussed and arranged were the National Council, which will be held at Broken Hill in May next year, and the Key Leaders' School and Full-Time Workers' School. These "schools" will consist of a week each of training for full-time Y.C.W. workers and for future key leaders and will include discussions and exchanging of ideas as well as talks. Other matters concerning Y.C.W. activities throughout Australia were also to be discussed at this meeting and a more full account of these will be given,on Pat's return. Leaving Perth on the same plane as Pat on Friday were "Miss Y.C.W.," Margaret Harris, and her companion, Christiane Larkin. The trip is Margaret's prize as winner of the Mi Y.C.W. Quest held earlier this year. COUNCIL MEETING (GIRLS). — Another final reminder of the Girls' Y.C.W. Council Meeting to be held this Monday, December 4. at 7.30 p.m. at the Y.C.W. Office. All presidents are requested to attend and any interested leaders are also.very welcome. As well as the usual annual reports and general business being presented to the Council, a representative from the Commonwealth Bank will also attend and speak on the subject of the "Home Savings Grant." The evening will conclude with supper. A special "Presidents' Booklet" directed towards assisting the president in her particular role has been prepared by the National Excutive. This booklet is available from the Y.C.W. Office at 40 cents per copy. If anyone knows of the whereabouts of any spare copies of the Preliminary Programme-Living the Y.C.W.—would they please return them to the central office as they are in demand at the moment. Y.C.W. RALLY. — The diocesan combined rally for the Movement for this year will be held at the Kalamunda Shire Hall on Sunday, December 17. This day, which will commence at 10.30 a.m.. will cater for all Y.C.W. leaders and general members, not to forget any interested youth. The theme of the day will be "Value Of Our Free Time" and we will re-
view our current National Campaign "Time For Living," plus the follow-up action on "International" projects. This should prove very interesting as many branches have written letters overseas or have made personal contacts there. The rally will conclude at Marian Lodge, Kalamunda, for a barbecue tea and Christmas social.

Dutch Catholics Re-Examine Authority Within The Church THE FAMILY WORSHIPS • FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTION ANY DAY, SEE CATHOLIC CATECHISM, BOOK ONE OR TWO, OR MY WAY TO GOD, OR WHAT. EVER IS BEING DONE AT SCHOOL; ALSO A HYMN AS DESIRED.
THE entire membership of the Church should be given some voice in the selection of the Church's leaders, who should serve limited rather than lifelong terms.
MONDAY DECEMBER 4 • SIGN OF THE CROSS. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Christ's coming is an ever-present reality. SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 21: 24-33. INSTRUCTION: I must pray for plentiful graces, so that I, as a member of the missionary people of God, may witness to the mysteries of salvation, to the Gospel message, and also to those who, following in the footsteps of St Francis Xavier whose feast we celebrate today, are carrying the awareness of Christ to those living in paganism. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: Visit this house and family, 0 Lord. Keep the devil's cunning influence away from it. Let Your holy angels dwell here to guard us in peace. And let Your blessing remain always upon us. This we ask of You through Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. May Almighty God bless, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

INSTRUCTION: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. WhenIuse the Rosary to pray, I say these words many times. They mean that Mary possessed her inner g lory unconsciously until the coming of Gabriel. Then, to her astonishment, she became aware that she bore within her soul divine treasures. She was of all women the one chosen to bear God's only Son. First and foremost in grace, He took her for His Mother and saved her as well as the whole human race. ROSARY (One Decade Only). is missionary by its very nature. That His Apostles understood this very well and that they took to heart His command to "Go and teach all nations" is evidenced by the almost six hundred million Catholics throughout the world today. Even in those infant days of the Church. the Apostles preached the Gospel in places as far away as India, Egypt, Russia and Spain. The very work of travelling so far afield was in itself no mean feat at the time. Our great Churches in every corner of the globe are living evidence of the success, under God, 3f their efforts. But the missionary task of the Church is a work that will end only with the end of time. And all of us, as members of Christ's Church. are in charity bound to play our part in the work of evangelisation of God's world. Vocations, material help and prayer are the main weapons at our disposal in continuing the work of Christ on earth. It is only to the few that God, in His Providence. gives the missionary vocation. They are the favoured ones, and those upon whom the Spirit breathes should unhesitatingly answer the call. For the majority of men, material aid to those actively engaged on the foreign missions is a very practical way of participating in the work. And no man is expected to help beyond his means. For all, the weapon of prayer is the one way of helping the missions that none should neglect. Without it vocations will not be forthcoming, material help will be in vain, and the work of the missions will surely founder on the rock of spiritual poverty.
MISSION INTENTION FOR DECEMBER "That the faithful may help the missionary activity of the Church by all means in their power."
Many Men Of Goodwill Are Close To Christianity N a country like Japan, where Christians number only a few hundred thousand, it is always interesting to come across people who, by the basic disposition towards God, are already very close to Christianity. Monsignor Francis Tanaka. Bishop of Takamatsu in Japan, discussing the religious situation in his country recently, spoke as follows. "We must never forget that for 400 years the Japanese government outlawed the Christian religion, which it considered dangerous, and that as a result the Japanese were afraid to embrace it. I have a great love for my fellow-countrymen, among whom there are vast numbers of men of goodwill. It is just that they have not become acquainted with Christianity.. or have not taken the time to study it. "Sometimes they think that it is only to please the missionary that one becomes a Catholic, and in that case they feel that it is just as well to keep to the traditions of their ancestors. Iknow many men of goodwill who live according to dictates of their conscience. We must not allow ourselves to be discouraged by the small number of baptisms, but rather seek to make our religion known and to teach men that they are all children of God and should do His will. There are many in Japan who are close in spirit to Christianity. and we must sow God's word among them, leaving it to the Lord of the harvest to reap as it pleases Him," One Japanese of the type we have mentioned is 80-year-old Dr. Murakami, who, although he has lost his four sons, lives in a spirit of complete resignation, putting his trust in the "Supreme Being," as he calls Him. Who governs the world and in particular mankind. He is convinced that by accepting God's will one can live in peace with oneself. Dr. Murakami is also a judo and swimming instructor, in particular of a type of swimming called "ukimi," which consists of floating on one's back without moving. He likes to say that the principle of "ukimi" is applicable in daily life, in that he only is happy who abandons hmself to God's will. Dr. Murakami is not yet convinced of the need to become a Christian, but day by day he seems to get closer to our religion. Q.: Scientists have experimented by bombarding dead matter with some kind of electrons. R.: What you call "dead matter" — which is of course lifeless — is itself composed of atoms, each with a very dense central particle, the nucleus, containing, a postive charge of electricity; this central particle being surrounded by other particles containing a negative charge of electricity. Each atom is, therefore, a hive of electrical activity. But in-organic matter, &spit( this, lacks the vital principle which makes al: the difference between it and living organisms. It is here that the scientific problem arises. We know that Louis Pasteur disproved spontaneot Is generation of life under conditions as we know them. But primeval conditions were not as they are now, and scientists may yet produce such conditions in a laboratory and show that simple forms of life can re suit under those conditions chemicai from changes only. If they do, they still won't be an nearer to accounting fo: the production of t. human soul, man's animating principle, wllicl. as a spiritln; entity c -..n not be derived from matter but can only have been, in each case, directly created by God. There I must stop for the moment, leaving your further thoughts on this subject for discussion next time.
