COUPLE had waited for several years for a child, and then when it came,
an estrangement arose between the three. THE husband thought the wife cared more for the child than for him; the wife felt the child was a kind of an intruder in the house and prevented them from travelling as they had done for many years. THE PROBLEM WAS ACCEPTANCE, OR HOW TO RELATE TO OTHER PEOPLE. The difficulty exists in all areas of life, even in the relation of God to man; it becomes acute in the face of a life-long illness when one has to decide whether or not they will accept the will of God. n relation to man, it is acceptance; in I relation to God, it is resignation. Acceptance in all its forms is difficult, whether it be to accept our own limitations and failings, or to accept the idiosyncracies and oddities of others. It is so easy to accept humanity; it is hard to accept "this- person. When two persons
are put in contact, there is the possibility that they may be like the negative and positive poles of electricity, generating sparks of heat and no light. Suppose one limits the problem to a readiness on the part of one to be of help to Another, such as a mother and father who try to relate to their teenage son, and yet they run up against a brick wall. There seems to be an impenetrability, a confusion of tongues, a readiness to help on the one hand; a reluctance to be helped on the other.
F l of all, acceptance beFIRST gins the moment there is a
common denominator between two persons. A psychological relation is established when one of the parties feels a need to receive, and the other perceives a need to give. "Those who are well have no need of a physician;" those who deny that they are wounded are not likely to welcome a bandage or a tourniquet. The final step • is taken wtien one person comes to another for help. Naturally, unless there is a quest, the problem of acceptance does not exist. A second condition refers not to the one seeking help„ but the helper or the therapist. He must not start with any pre-judgments or fit the anxious person into a ready-made category. The good Samaritan must have some vulnerability or sensitiveness, in order to share the

wounds and fears of others; he must be like a blackboard on which nothing is written. His attitude must be "I care enough for you to be able to share your feelings." As a scientist passively sits before nature and lets it unfold its laws, so the therapist must allow the patient to write the agenda. The counsellor and helper must not be like a commercial saying to the distressed one before him: "Do you feel run-down, tired, exhausted, cranky, dissatisfied with yourself because people do not understand you — take Livery's little liver tablets." There is no cure-all for the person seeking understanding. He is unique and, for the moment, no other person in the world exists but him.

At this point, there begins to be absorption of the evil of another which helps to diminish it. Turning the other cheek, instead of multiplying hate, kills it by not passing it back.
Here there is Love to the uttermost, swallowing up, gulping down, drinkia4 deep the bitter chalice, taking the worst man had to offer, and then rising above it. This is the secret of all therapy, fat those who refuse to relate to us. As Russell Howe put it; "He is the Lord because He is God. But I know Him as my Lord because He let me kill Him, and then He came back."

NUMBER of articles have appeared lately in popular periodicals expressing a general concern about the quality of life in American society. ERICH FROMM, the noted psychologist, has made some incisive observations on our love for life in the August issue of Mc-Call's Magazine. His remarks supply much food for thought, especially for parents. Life itself must always be seen as a dynamic process: indeed, according to Fromm, life tends to unite and integrate. Where there is life, there is constant growth and change. However, the growth and change are not wild and unThere is a principle of structured. growth, or better, a variety of patterns which the process of life may follow. So a boy may grow to be an athlete, or a musician, or a philosopher, or a little of all three. The boy will, however, remain a boy, and his pattern of development will .be different from a girl who has similar talents and abili-

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . . COM0.—On October 8 a general meeting will be held at the Como school by the Y.C.W. for all youth who are interested at all in politics. A guest speaker has been invited out to the branch to give a talk on this ever-controversial subject. Recently a coffee and record evening was held at the home of Miss E. Devlin, of Como. The evening was a great success with everyone joining in and getting to know each other a little better, which had been the purpose of the evening. Squash evenings are being held every Tuesday night and a mixed basketball game is also being arranged for the near future. Unfortunately, in the football competition, Como missed out on.`the four' by percentages. A wind-up and prize-giving evening has been arranged to finish off the season and special guests have been asked along to give their views and ideas on football. FREEDOM FROM HUNGER. — In order to help society to see and realise the great importance of the Freedom From Hunger Campaign, a special night has been set aside at which a speaker from the Campaign Committee will be present to explain its function and our role in it. He will also have a variety of films and tapes on hand to give real examples of hunger in its truest form. The meeting is being arranged by the Y.C.W. in eonnection with the Campaign and it is hoped that many leaders and members will attend. The date is Wednesday, September 20, at 3 p.m. and the place is the All Saints' Memorial Centre, 77 St. George's Terrace, Perth. Anyone interested in attending this meeting would be most welcome. YOUTH MASS.—On Sunday, September 24, at St. Patrick's Church in Fremantle, a special Youth Mass will be held at 9 a.m. All youth are invited to attend THEIR Mass, after which morning tea will be provided. As a special training night for Y.C.W. leaders, a meeting is being held a St. Patrick's Hall, Fremantle, at which six girls' branches will be present—Palmyra, Beaconsfield, Hilton Park, Applecross, Melville and Fremantle. Ellen Mills, a Y.C.W. extension worker, is returning from India in December and the final payment for her has been made. The money which normally would have gone to the Ellen Mills Fund will enable us to pay our subscriptions to national office more regularly. A letter from Aileen McShane, our national treasurer, was discussed. It was decided that we could pay our national office promptly if groups could pay their accounts within two weeks following the receipt of their accounts. Full-timer's wages were discussed. The branches now owing $30 to the end of August are Morley, Leederville, Victoria Park and Applecross. Fund-raising for Miss Y.C.W. will have made a difference, we decided, but they should be able to get down to it now, as we only have wages on hand till Christmas. Marian Lodge has been hired out to various organisations and religious bodies and this has boosted the hostel account. The balance sheet and various problems within branches were discussed. One important fact coming from this was the need for the treasurer to know the girls in the branch to avoid financial embarrassment of a member.

With the help of German Peace Corps volunteers, Father Dan Rice has completed more than a hundred dams, which have been filled by monsoon rains this year. They have also dug hundreds of wells in areas which suffer from perennial water shortage. • MISSIONARIES AND RELIEF AGENCIES The Catholic mission aries and relief agencies including Misereor, Oxfam, Corags, Catholic Relief Service of America. and AFPRO have flown in drilling rigs, dam-building equipments and agricultural implements and made possible visits by hundreds of technical experts in the fight to double farm output by modern technical methods. The goodwill and sacrifice of the Christian relief agencies have been misinterpreted by some anti - Christian groups. But the Government and the famine-stricken people have appreciated the timely help very much.
Shown is the famous international resort of St. Moritz in Switzerland named, in German, for the saint who was martyred in that country 17 centunes ago. St. Maurice and his companions were members of the Theban Legion, a unit of the Roman Army recruited in Upper Egypt. They were Christians. ( In the first centuries of the Church Egypt was a Christian country whereas countries such as Italy and France were pagan!) Their army, under Emperor Maximian, was on the march through Switzer land to put down a revolt. Maximian gave orders that the whole army should join in offering sacrifice to the gods for the success of their expedition. This St. Maurice and his legionaries would not do. The Emperor had every tenth one of them put to death on the spot. The remainder still refused to worship f alse gods. Seeing that he could not overcome their constancy Maximian ordered the other legions to surround Maurice's men, cut them to pieces and help t hemselves to the booty and possessions of the, faithful Thebans. Though a whole legion may not have been slaughtered it is certain that a great number fell with St. Maurice their commander. by Arthur O'Leary.
