THE PROBLEM of getting instruction to all Catholic children has well passed the point of providing Catholic schools. This was revealed last week when a group of priests met to hear a report on a new experiment in two local State high schools at Midland Junction and Applecross. It involves all the visiting clergy combining to teach an agreed Scripture syllabus to the whole school in rotation. The students are not divided into their denominational groups, but are taught in their respective school classes.

A committee of Perth business men under the patronage of the Minister for Industrial Affairs and the North West, the Hon. The Catholic Truth Society Douay Bible was replaced in April 1967 by the Revised Standard Version (Catholic Edition) in paperback form. The RSV is a revision of the King James' Bible, better known as the Authorised Version. It is a translation from the original scriptural languages and is a modern text in clear straightforward English. The Catholic Edition, which includes the deutero-canonical books in their traditional order, was prepared by the Catholic Biblical Association of Great Britain, with explanatory notes. This is the only official Catholic Edition of the RSV. It has been approved for use in the Liturgy.

R E WE MORE NEUROTIC THAN OUR ANCESTORS ?

Is it true, as Dr. Karen Homey states, that "neurosis is the stepchild laid at the door of our modern civilisation?" True, over a half of the hospital beds of the United States are are occupied by mental patients, but does this really prove that we are more neurotic, or merely that we make more beds of roses for our neuroses? The psychiatrists at Turbigen University have gathered statistics to prove that neuroses are no more rampant than in previous ages. Viktor Frank!, one of the leading psychiatrists of the world, claims that neuroses have remained constant throughout the centuries, but the symptoms have changed. He recalls that in 1853 a book was written by a certain Weinke entitled "The Nervous Condition—the Disease of Our Time." But, in what sense have neuroses changed? In the past, the neuroses were generally about guilt and our relation to God. Today, they are about health and

money. Then the concern was vertical; today it is horizontal. Men worried about their health and their vault. The fear of sin and guilt has been replaced by disease and poverty. Depressions have been extant in every age; it is only what depresses which has varied.

distinguishing between the normal cause of neuroses and its abnormal manifestation. Dostoievski saw the danger of such a denial: "A time will come when men will say there is no sin, there is no guilt; there is only hunger. They they will come crying and fawning at the feet of the omnipotent State and say: Take our freedom; give us bread." The argument is: no one is guilty who is not free; when guilt is denied, freedom is denied; when freedom is denied, slavery takes over. Fear of poverty and fear of disease haunt the mere man. First, fear of poverty: This differs from the older type —today we have passed from unorganised insecurity into organised insecurity. In other days, an individual fell into poverty alone; now, through the in. tense organisation of modern economic life, poverty overwhelms in a wholesale manner. Let an advertising company lose but one account, and many lose their jobs because they are tied together in a network of relationships. How much insecurity has become a

part of our culture is evident from the titles of two books—one published before World War I; the other after the Depression. In 1900, F. Kormedi wrote a novel entitled "The Happy Individual." The individual held security in his own hands and was only slightly overshadowed by the insecurity of others. After the Depression, another novel appeared, "Chaos Is Come Again," by Claude Houghton. The chaos is insecurity or the dread of not having enough. But it is not really the fear of not having bread which troubles us, but of not having N..veet rolls.

M OST DREAD THE other neurosis which has taken the place of one arising from conscience is a dread of losing health. A hypochondriac has been described as one who hates to hear that she is looking well. Disease is a sign of the death which is yet to come. No one talks about death, but there is concentration on the vestibule. Perhaps the most dreaded of all diseases to modern man is cancer, not because it is hidden while it mutes all within, but because one fears that an examination may be bad news. As one doctor put it: "We are not prevented from dying; we are only helped to live." Both of these neuroses have a deeper significance than is generally realised. As one patient said to a doctor: "I see now that I shall never be cured of my

URING a recent meeting in San Francisco I had occasion

to

visit

Iis too early for anyone to form final I conclusions as to where it's all going. but the experience left me with some definite though admittedly personal impressions. There have been a number of newspaper and magazine articles of late that describe and report on different aspects of hippie life. Despite the expertise of the writers, it seemed unreal to me, and I thought that the -hippies were a small group of people in their early twenties who were rebelling against the demand for conformity and convent:on in our society. I also assumed that they had some definite although idealistic solutions to the problems of our time. Although the hippies live in one district of San Francisco, their presence is felt throughout the city. Some work in the downtown area, some gather in the park, they sell their newspapers

SINCE the cardinal "principle of hippie existence is love, the members of the hippie community are not angry or hostile. In fact, they are generally pleasant and friendly, and are quite willing to sit down with strangers and talk about practically anything of interest. Among themselves, the loveprinciple leads to' a community style of living, wherein they share food, clothing and lodging. In walking through the Haight-Ashbury section, the district where they live and have their stores. I was struck by the number of young people who just sat on the ground or sidewalk, or leaned against parked cars. They just seemed t o be sunning themselves,, much as people on a crowded holiday beach. Their clothing is somewhat bizarre and costume-like, and little effort is made in favour of cleanliness. Beards and unkempt hair seem to be commoplace. A panel of hippies gave their views on marriage, sexuality and family life to the conference I attended. It's hard to say how far their views are represen-

McHugh tative of the hippie community, but they were quite permissive about sex and drugs, tolerant of homosexuality, dissatisfied with the present style of American family life, but unable to suggest any real alternatives or suggestions to improve things. They spoke of God and spiritual dimension to man's existence, although their concepts were almost individualistic, Apparently there is a good deal of non-marital love-making going on and. in some cases, children will be born and become the responsibility of the whole community. One young man was pushing for a matriarchal system, where children would have their mother's name and society would endow the child with legal rights through the mother.

FINDS NO VISION BUT CONFUSION

I thought that the hippies, in their r e-b el lion a gainst society, ought be in a position to tell us something. or to lead us to recognise some of the harmful forces that are destructive of the person in our culture. My impression now is that they are confused by the complexity of modern society, and have chosen to drop out.

A VISIT WITH THE HIPPIES They seemingly have no vision of how to better things, and their style of life will probably not last to long. As a result, many will be hurt by the experience of unstructured living, of dope, and of permissiveness in regard to sex. The girls especially will be the victims of a new type of double-standard that seems less responsible towards the long-term good of the child. I am inclined to think there is a good deal of human talent going to waste, and that the effort—if there be one—to reenter society will be practically impos-' sible for many. I am agraid that the lack of vision or determinatin to change things has already produced a certain non-relevance. Many of the teenage hangers-on or vacation-time hippies will not be integrated into the hippie community, and may find adjustment so difficult that they will fold under the srain. Yet, modern society has led to the hippie phenomenon, and the lesson for all of us is that we must find and solve the problems that lead to such rebellion or breakdown.

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . . NATIONAL VISITATION. — Arriving in Perth on Sunday, Sepember 10, is Margaret Cannon, Y.C.W. Girls' National President, Margaret will stay approximately a month in Western Australia and some of her time will be spent in the South-West. During her stay, Margaret will be visiting branch meetings and functions, discussing matters with the executive relevant to the diocese and generally assisting in reviewing and planning the Movement in Perth. A key leaders' weekend will also be held at Marian Lodge on the weekend September 15-17. This will not only provide a means of supplementary training, but also an opportunity for the girls to get to know each other. BERNARD LAWRENCE., diocesan president, leaves for Melbourne on Friday, September 8, to attend a full national executive meeting which will cover five days of planning and reviewing the movement on a national level. Bernard is representing both Perth and Bunbury dioceses. RECENT ENGAGEMENT. — Congratulations and best wishes have been extended to Bernadette Hegney (girls' full-time secretary) and Bernard Lawrence (boys' president) on their engagement. MIGRANT ASSIMILATION. — At a recent meeting of younger delegates to the Associated Youth Committee, Y.C.W. representatives took part in a discussion on the "Assimilation of Migrants." It was realised by the number of migrants already partcipating in youth organisations that they are interested in such activities and so the onus is on the organisations to play a bigger role in assessing the general needs of young migrants and preparing appropriate programmes related to these needs and problems. At next month's meeting it is hoped that representatives from the Immigration Department, External Affairs Department and Good Neighbour Councils will be present to advise us on the best ways of helping migrants assimilate. LEADERSHIP TRAINING. — The National Fitness Council of W.A. in association with the Youth Council of W.A. is presently conducting a course in leadership training focused on the "left-school under-21" group. Activities include crafts, hobbies, the arts. etc., with some emphasis on physical recreation, and embodying a degree of administrative theory and general philosophy and practice of youth education.

LEADER.—If you have the feeling that the diocese has been rather quiet for a few days, you are right. The simple explanation is that Michael Andrews (ex-Kensington leader and executive member) has gone home to England. For those of you who were not fortunate enough to meet Mick, you have missed a rare chance. Mick was a real friend to all those with whom he came into contact. In a crowded room nobody was more conspicuous than he. To start with, he stood close enough to six feet and would have tipped the scales at about fourteen stones, I think. This was enough to make anyone stand out but Mick Andrews He was extremely was just not anyone. friend,ly, always happy and joking and tremendously considerate. He was never tired of helping people in whatever they did. I can remember just recently when he cancelled an engagement just to go to the Y.C.W. football to contact a young man. After the game the other left without seeing him, but Mick was there again next week to follow up. For those who did meet him, there can be only one line of thought—to be as well liked and good-natured as Mick Andrews. As a Y.C.W. leader, he was tremendous. Nobody could be as good a leader as he. Without a doubt Mick would be one of the most dedicated of Y.C.W. leaders anywhere. Y.C.W. ranked No. 1 with him—I don't know what was No. 2, but it was a long way behind. Next time you have a moment to spare, give a thought for Mick Andrews. At that very moment he probably needs the help to get someone else out of trouble.

Towards the turn of the century. Mashati was just part of a much larger area in the eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro where two Holy Ghost missionaries were beginning to plant the seeds of the Faith. Later, in the early forties, it developed into a separate Mission. The Holy Ghost Fathers, including the present Bishop of Arusha. the Most Reverend Vincent Durning, C.S.Sp.. laboured night and day over the years and the Mission grew until the day came, seven y ears ago, when two African priests became available to staff it. Today. Mashati Mission has 21.000 Catholics and still only two priests. The labours involved in caring for a Mission this large are almost beyond the physical possibility of two priests. During the past years over 1,300 people were baptised there—an average of 26 people per week. A large beautiful church has been built and more than 5.000 Christians receive Holy Communion at the crowded Masses each week— an indication that the Faith is still very much alive in Mashati. Forty-eight Praesidia of the Legion of Mary with 2.000 members help the priests in their care for souls, but in turn need to be given guidance by those two priests. A hundred and one teachers conduct classes for over 5,600 students, receiving an education at the Mission. but the two priests must hold monthly meetings with these teachers and spend hours each month visiting the various schools and youth centres. The parish council helps the priests run the Mission. but one of the two priests must be present at every meeting. The credit union aids the temporal welfare of the people, but this too consumes the precious time of the priests. The dispenary and natal clinic help those in need of medical attention, but they, too, have to be visited frequently by the priests. Mashati is one example of what happens when local priests become available to staff a Mission which has been well founded by missionaries. The • priests have heroically met the responsibilities given them. There are many o ther equally heartening examples throughout the Mission 1.vor1d.

MISSIONARIES CONTRIBUTE TO MATERIAL PROGRESS OF INDIANS IN CRICAMOLAS REGION

cANQUINTU, a village of the prela-

ture "Nullius" of Bocas del Toro, in Panama, has recently become an important centre. Four Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, known as "Mother Laura's Sisters," have now come from Colombia to help in this work for the spiritual and material welfare of these Indians. A group of Indian families has settled in Canquintu, where the St. Augusstine's Centre for Native Vocations has officially begun work. Plans are also going ahead for new schools, fi carpentry workshop, courses in domestic economy and experimental fields for agriculture. One of the Sisters is a nurse, two are teachers and the fourth is an expert in domestic economy. Their work will consist mainly in teaching grown-ups to read and write. to visit the families and teach them elementary hygiene, to give needlework courses, to look after the sick and to help with religious instruction. For the school year 1967-68, three classes of an official primary school will open and the t wo qualified teaching Sisters will teach there. The Government has promised help, and the building of a church, of houses for the missionaries and teachers and boarding schools for boys and girls whose homes are a long way off is planned.

RELIGIOUS LIFE GOES ON NORMALLY IN NIGERIA Apart from the inconvenience, when travelling, at being stopped at military or police roadblocks, and of having their cars searched and their luggage examined at the various security checkpoints. missionaries are generally not interfered with. While the searches are a nuisance, they are generally conducted with both friendliness and courtesy by soldiers or policemen whose patience.. considering the long hours they have to work, is no less than remarkable.
