OLONIUS once asked Hamlet what he was

reading.
HIS answer was: "Words, words, words!" Civilisations grow tired of thinking after a time, just as an author, after squeezing his head for seven or eight hours straight, becomes weary of his theme. So, too, when culture is fresh, alert and awake, it puts its teeth into problems to work out a solution. Even in days of catastrophe and trial, the mind tries to work out answers to its gloom and fears. For example, after the Macedonian conquest„ Greece developed four distinct answers to the problem of life, answers which have been repeated all through history. ONE VIEW is that life is so tragic we must grit our teeth and bear it—this was called Stoicism. THE OPPOSITE EXTREME was that because life 'is a passing parade, "eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die--and this was the philosophy of Epicureanism. THE THIRD escape was to thumb one's nose at life itself, sneer and ridicule the idea that there are any values in life—this was called Cynicism by the Greeks and "hippism" in our day. THE FOURTH answer was to doubt the value of reason and maintain that k nowledge is impossible; we cannot
• One Other Way IN the human order, this about sums up all the frames into which our poor, weak and unaided reason draws its summary of life. But there is still one other way left, which appears only when civilisation becomes affluent and fatigued and tired; when minds weary about thinking at all. Systems are no longer their concern, but only an attitude which dispenses them from developing a system. Here one is not concerned with the problem, but with the language the problem uses; not with the possibility of making music, but whether the word "music" has sense; thinking now dissolves into nothing else than a criticism of words. There are no problems; there are only definitions; there are no answers but only syntax; there are no poems but only printed signs; no ideas but only words. It is a wonderful system for an age which became used to having its problems analysed on a couch.

question; but it seems to be very consoling to the one who dissolves the violin solo into drawing a horse's hair over the entrails of a dead cat. A proponent of this philosophy considers himself as the only island of sanity in an ocean of absurdity; he alone knows what a word means, and he is not sure that he should tell the meaning. He is like the camel in the Moslem theology which holds that God has 100 attributes and man knows only 99 of them; the camel knows the hundredth, but he is not telling. Despite our growth in knowledge, a small worm is eating it at the root, when only a few men arrogate to themselves the title of masters of the meaning of words which wise men use. They put themselves in somewhat the same position of a mother who one can understand the gibberish of her child. When things fail, such as theology, philosophy, the arts and sciences, the answer, it is said, must be found in the simplest solution of the medicine man who attributes his failures to the want of a proper incantation. A wife asks her husband: "Do you still love me?" He sits her down for three hours to try to find out what she means by "love," "still," "do" and "me." The great mistake of the husband is to believe that no word 'should be said which is not scientifically verifiable. As it has been well said: "Physics may one day find the answer to all physical questions." How would one of these linguistic. analysts prove that he was a legitimate child of his parents. l F • So Far Removed T HIS fatigue philosophy arises because we are so far removed from the reality of things. We rarely see a sunset in a city. Neofl lights do not make one think of the Giver of Light, but "look, ma, see what we have done." When one unwraps layer after layer of an onion, what is left besides the odour? An analysis of water in a sinking ship does not prove the ship is not sinking. It is earnestly to be hoped that our civilisation will take a rest, and get back to the problems of life rather than to the meaning of words. Of them Shakespeare has said: "They have been at a great feast of languages and stolen only the scraps. They have lived long in the almsbasket of words,"

IIIS THAT BIND RECENTLY read two separate news stories that converged on the same point, the effect on the child of the uninvolved father. SOCIAL scientists for a long time have noted the danger that exists for the widow or divorcee who must. raise her children all alone. In recent years, concern about the actual physical absence of a father in such families has decreased somewhat, partially due to the fact that the children, especially the boys,, often find a "substitute father" in an uncle, close friend, teacher or clergyman. Indeed, a boy may well have a 'series o f substitute fathers or heroes, who help to provide him with some idea of what it means to be a man. Of course, in such instances, ha mother inut be a reasonably balanced person, a truly feminine woman who doesn't attempt to be a man or to dominate the boy's life. The first of the two news reports listed a number of factors that a group of psychiastrists found to be contributing
second story, in 'HIPPIES' THE the same issue of the Times, reports that another group of social scientists strongly suspect that the "hippies" may be the result of a family consisting of a dominant mother and a weak or absent father. Since many of the hippies are from middle-class, educated families, the father is not usually actually absent; he just doesn't measure up to the role of leadership that the family expects of him. One of the scholars noted that the

A further observation may also be made. The specialists have been able to single out the weakness of a matriarchal structure for the Negro family. To some degree the implication is that the middle-class American family is without problems, and is the ideal. Now we are finding that even in these supposedly

As a helpful note, many of our younger couples, very much the members of the present generation, have been able to pinpoint the weaknesses, and build up the own strengths. By adapting their resources to their needs, they are building good and successful families. The influence of each parent is felt. even if there is a limitation on the actual presence.

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . MORE Y.C.W. TRAINING. — At Marian Lodge in Kalamunda there will be a special Y.C.W. training weekend for boys on Friday and Saturday, September 1 and 2, at which the following branches are expected to attend —Redcliffe, Applecross, Kensington, Hilton Park, Carlisle, Mt. Yokine, East Victoria Park and Bentley. Though these branches are "rostered" for attendance, any boy who is interested would be welcome to.,attend. The weekend commences on Friday at 7.30 p.m. with a discussion, "Look At Life." On Saturday morning there will be another di.cussion on lay spirituality and in the afternoon a special tape will be run giving a talk by ex-communist Douglas Hyde. As a conclusion, Mass will be celebrated at approximately 4.30 p.m. LEADER'S DEATH.—A recent piece of bad news was received from the Y.C.W. National Office in Melbourne. Paul Ladds, who has been a "full-timer" for the Melbourne Y.C.W. over the last 18 months was fatally injured in a car accident while on his way home from chairing an International Night in his region East week. Y.C.W. leaders especially are asked to remember Paul in their prayers and Masses. SOUTH PERTH STEPS UP. — The South Perth girls Y.C.W. have recently increased their numbers to nine and at the moment, with the aid of the boys, are continuing the organising of monthly dances—the next being held this Sunday, September 3 (see Social Calendar). STREET APPEAL.—A street appeal on behalf of the Daughters of Charity for the Night Shelter for Women and the Soup Kitchen is being held on Friday. September 8. As the success of this appeal depends on the number of collectors, it is hoped that any reader who

could help in this way—even for one hour— would do so by obtaining tins and badges from the basement room in the Town Hall in Hay Street. The days to collect these tins are Wednesday, September 6, and Thursday, September 7, from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, September 8, from 8.30 a.m. If these arrangements are unsuitable, tins can be delivered to you by ringing 28-4403. APPROACHING MARRIAGE.—Best wishes have been extended to former Morley Y.C.W. president Geraldine Chegwidden and Tony Epskamp on their approaching marriage. MAIDA VALE "MARATHON" RESULTS.— The recent Marathon Walk held by the Maida Vale Y.C.W. group to raise funds for the "Miss Y.C.W." Quest was very successful— especially socially. There were 22 walkers and the course covered 11 miles, starting from the foot of Kalarnunda Hill. The fact that it poured with rain added to the fun of it all. As a reviver, the weary walkers drank hot mugs of soup especially prepared by Mrs. A. Murray and stood around a huge fire to "dry out." The winners were Betty Salter and Kay Seal, who were awarded a travel rug each for their two-hour trek.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: "Be it done unto me to . Thy according word." Do I realise what these words of Mary mean to my life? SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 6: 26-37. INSTRUCTION: It was through Mary's "Yes" to God at the Annunciation that all the mysteries of our Catholic Faith have been opened up . to us. It was through her "Yes" that we have been able to share in ,:he redemptive work of her Son. She knew that this "Yes" meantoffering herself over and over many times during the day. Like Mary, let us always be ready to say "Yes" to God each time He asks for a kindly word, a helping hand, an act of obedience or special love. How did I show Jesus today I wanted to be just like Mary? ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: Visit this house and family, 0 Lord. Keep the devil's cunning influence away from it. Let Your holy angels dwell here and guard us in peace. And let Your blessing remain always with us. This we ask of You through Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. May Almighty God bless us, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
THOUGHT FOR TIIE DAY:
"For Me Who is mighty has done great things for me . . ." Do I ever think of the great things God has worked in me through Baptism?
"The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us." Does my heart show forth the birth of God's Son by a new way of life, a new outlook on people and things?
SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 1: 37-47. INSTRUCTION: When Mary knew her cousin Elizabeth had also been favoured by God, she set out as soon as she could to give her a helping hand. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and asked why she was so favoured that the Mother of her Lord should come to her. It was during her visit to her cousin that the Holy Spirit revealed to us the greatness of Mary. And it was also at this visit that Mary let us have a glimpse into her inner thoughts telling of the love and joy that filled her heart each time she was able to give Jesus to others. Do I, like Mary, try to bring Christ and His sanctifying power to all who welcome Him with faith and joy? ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER 1ND BLESSING: As for first day.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER '7
SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 2: 244.
+ SIGN OF THE CROSS THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: "Do not be afraid, I bring you news of great joy . . ." What does this great joy— the birth of Jesus — mean to me? SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 2: 8-20.
INSTRUCTION: It was to the shepherds that Mary first showed her new-born Babe. Jesus loves to dwell in the hearts of simple souls — the meek, humble, kind and gentle. Jesus was re-born in us at Baptism. He is re-born again each time we receive Him in Holy Communion. Ask Mary His Mother and ours, to obtain for us a full sharing in His re-birth and so make us ready to go to our own and our neighbours' homes to understand, and to help them understand the great love Jesus has for each one of us.
INSTRUCTION: The shepherds made up their minds to go to Bethlehem and see this thing that had taken place that the Lord had made known to them. It was a challenge of their faith and love; they accepted it and were rewarded.
Did I show the rebirth of Jesus in my soul today, by radiating love and understanding for others?
In the reading of these Scripture passages, Jesus will also let us see how He longs to be re-born in us and through us in the lives of others — just He was in and through Mary. Ask her to help us see the image of Jesus in one another. This is a challenge for me. Am I ready to accept it by my kindess and thoughtful ness for others?

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 8 .14 SIGN OF THE CROSS THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: "Blessed are you among women . . ." God prepared Our Lady for His Son. Ask Him to prepare you also for the coming of Christ. SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew, 1: 1-16. INSTRUCTION: The Gospel for today's feast — "The Birthday of the Bless ed Virgin" — begins with the genealogy of Jesus Christ. This long list of Hebrew names have many meanings underlining them. For us there is a special one. If Jesus is born in our soul, He is born there in spite of and through the accumulation of our sins. Jesus pierces, finds His way through our faults, climbing over them one after another. It is His genealogy in us. In this breakthrough s hines forth His mercy, His condescension and His strength. His birth remains for each one of us fl very personal event; Jesus is .a gift offered to every man. Am I going to accept His gift? Ask Mary to prepare you for Jesus as God prepared her. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.
IN THE SPIRIT OF THE VATICAN COUNCIL SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9, SIGN OF THE CROSS THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Remember that love is the greatest good. Ask God to help you love your fellow-men with His love. SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew, 22: 34-40. INSTRUCTION: The theme in the Mass for this Sunday is "Unity and Love." Unity is essential to the universe. On the physical and spiritual levels it is what keeps the world "together." On the spiritual ( moral) level unity is achieved by love. That is why Jesus loved us and requires that we love Him and unite ourselves with Him by love, the only force which can possibly unite thinking, personal beings. . His greatest commandment: -Love with the whole heart, the whole soul, and the whole mind." This is what He is demanding. Am I giving Him this "total love times three?" Or am I holding back? ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.
SUNDAY S EPTEMBER 10 ÷ SIGN OF THE CROSS THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Our love for our low-men is the sure of our loveMee" for God. Do I remember this? SCRIPTURE READING: As for Saturday. INSTRUCTION: To love God above all and then love our neighbours as Ourselves is not simply a moral attitude we ought to have. It is a reality. It is a corn. anclment. But this is only possible when God loves us first. Through the sacrament of His love we are most certainly able to love and to be one. The world can only believe this when our acts and deeds express our oneness and love. Do I show this love and unity in my daily living? ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: As for first day.
