Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses . • •
y
EARS ago each profession had a well-defined field in which to work; there were very few scalping expedi-
from one area to another. But today the foul-lines have been erased; new techniques are developed and the line of demarcation between one profession and another becomes blurred. Take, for example, social work. For centuries, religion cared for the sick, the poor and the distressed. Then. social agencies came into the field claiming that many individuals were uncared for. The complaint against religion was that it was too institutional. Social work boasted that it would introduce the care for the person. But now it is just he reverse. Social work has become so institutionalised and bureaucratic that the individual finds little place in it. The needy are divided into categories while those who do not fit into them are often neglected. Religion, which once was accused of being too institutionalised, is picking up the personal fragments dropped by social work. In one inner city alone, where there are not more than forty thousand people, 15 religious groups are now concerned with finding housing for families and old persons. Social training became
so professional that it ultimately neglected the personal, while religion which was once thought to be too institutional is now the force devoted to the salvaging of the personal. As Paul M. Harrison put it: "As the church lowers its professional criteria, social work raises its qualifying standards. In a word, as the professional workers gain greater mystery, and increase the distance between themselves and their clients, the priests lose their official charisma and traditional mystique and move closer to the people."
Same Reversal SOMEWHAT the same reversal of roles is found in the field of psychiatry and religion. In former days, anyone who was mentally sick, disturbed, fearful or despairing would call on the priest, the rabbi, the minister. Now they refuse to go; so the doctor is forced to take over the province of the religious ministry. It is not to the point to examine why the couch has been exchanged for the rectory parlour, but one reason is that special skills are required for the psychotic and the neurotic which have not been included in theological training. Another reason might be the decline of compassion in the ministry for the mentally distressed. The afflicted were now willing to pay a psychiatrist just to have someone listen to them. But even here there is beginning to be a change, as there was in the field of 'social welfare. Within the last few years,
religion has begun to reclaim the lost territory surrendered to psychology. Not that it takes over the treatment which Rroperly belongs to the field of psychiatry, but rather that psychiatrists themselves now admit that many psychoses and neuroses are due not to the love of pleasure, but to a search for meaning. Countless are the books now advertised on Pastoral Counselling, but most important of all is the "Series on Pastoral Counselling" published by Prentice. Hall. In this series are books which prepare the minister, rabbi or priest to counsel the alcoholic, the teenagers, unwed mothers, physically sick, the deeply troubled, etc.
Berlin Wall Down longer does a Berlin NOWall exist between pro-
fessions such as between psychotherapy and counselling. No longer is it said that religion is concerned with salvation and medicine with health. The American Medical Association has a Department of Religion and Health which recognised the interlocking character of both. Paul Tournier, the eminent Swiss psychiatrist, has said that every doctor must concern himself with two diagnoses—the first is objective, and is related to the person's disease; the second is subjective, and is c oncerned with the meaning and the reaction of the patient while experiencing his disease. Edward E. Thornton says that "pastoral counsellors penetrate the boundary
The Berlin Wall Of Profession from the opposite side." Bernard Meland, in this connection has well observed: "There is a hutnan' degradation that results from poverty and from the lack of proper and ade, quate means to heal and nourish the body. There is also a human degrada. tion that follows from the pursuit ot physical well-being when this is made the chief and all -absorbing end of life:,
Kinds And Symptoms IT, therefore„ may not be true that we have more neuroses and psychoses than ever before and, therefore, there had to be a new science to take care of them. Rather, it may be that there are only different kinds and different symptoms. Way back in 1853, there was a book published by Weinke entitled The Ner. vous Condition — the Disease of Our Time." In times past, men were concern, ed more about their guilt and their relation to God as Judge and Law -giver; now they are concerned more with their health and their money. But is guilt ever got rid of, or is it merely ignored? The Quest for Meaning, as Viktor Frankl insists, is more fundamental to the nature of man than anything else, There may, therefore, be much wisdom in Pastoral Counselling along with psy. chiatry, as there is with religion along. side of social welfare.

Consolidating Catholic parish School System
LIVED AS BLIND hours daily, FORfivefour men and women
live as blind people to help gain greater understanding of problems of the blind. The five are instructors of the blind taking a special course at Seton Hall University at South Orange, U.S.A. For four hours every days, they wear blindfolds for such everyday activities as walking on pavements, climbing stairs, boarding buses, eating meals and crossing streets. Sister Joseph Marita, a teacher at St. Lucy's School for the Blind in West Philadelphia, said: "This course should be a requirement for all instructors of the blind. I know that already Ihave gained a greater empathy my for and feeling charges. Until one is in total darkness for a period of time there is not the projection of one's consciousness into another being with a similiar situation."

HE story of the riot that rocked the city of Newark some weeks ago is now known throughout the
country. The specific cause of the tragedy is difficult to pin down, and all the more disturbing because similar outbreaks are threatening or taking place in other major cities week by week. it is only natural to ask why, but it staggers the mind to assimilate the complexity of the reasons. Thoughtful people have probed the mystery in the hope of finding a solution and enterprising reporters have toured the city, describing in graphic detail the incidents that took place. Inquiry and analysis are valuable if they lead to insight and to wisdom; they are dishonest and unjust if they merely satisfy curiosity or provide for sensationalism. Among the stories and reports that that have been written, there is a high-

ly encouraging episode that has been lost sight of. It involves only a small number of people, but it betokens a truly Christian response to human needs.
ABOUT thirty m iles away a are there number of families who have been keenly for some problems Newark's of e ai.var years now. These families live in a comfortable suburban town, where there is little poverty, frustration or racial tension.
C.F.M. PROGRAMME
used it as a special education and social centre for their work among the poor. The Young Christian Students engaged in educational programmes for children, and the C.F.M. conducted an adult education programme with classes in banking, loans, instalment buying and home economics. In every sense of the word, the families from Park Ridge came to know the people from Newark's housing projects as "the family down the block."
The Family Of Man In Newark transported the food to Newark and had begun the distribution even before the National Guard arrived to attempt to restore order. News of their efforts spread to other suburban parishes, and more food was collected and 'sent to the city. Admittedly, the efforts of these people didn't forestall or bring to an end the riots, but they certainly provided testimony of deep concern and brotherly As Father Kleissler remarked, love. "Our people have certainly made great personal. sacrifices, but the friendshii, ,
Their Christian Family Movement programme led to some awareness of the problems of the inner car, and with the co-operation of Father Tom Kleissler, their chaplain, they set up a programme that brought some thirty people from Our Lady of Mercy parish to the inner city of Newark each week during the month of July.
WHEN the news Park r eached Ridge of the riots, these families profoundly were 'shaken, because it meant that their neighbours and friends in the housing projects were in serious trouble and danger. Their concern only required leadership, and at the Masses on Sunday morning they were given a report of the troubles and a request for food.
The initial group comprised some forty couples from the C.F.M. and 70 youngsters from the Young Christian Students. They lived in an old house that belonged to a downtown parish, and
The appeal spread to the 2,000 families in the parish faster than the trouble spread in Newark, and by noon they had collected five tons of food. Within hours the people from Our Lady of Mercy had

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . . YOUTH AND THE UNITED NATIONS.—At the monthly A.Y.C. meetings (Associated Youth Committee) held in Perth the Y.C.W is represented. The last meeting was addressed by Dr. Moore, who had been the first chairman of A.Y.C. from 1945-54, now working as an Executive Officer with the United Nations Office in Perth. He mentioned that there are 110 organisations or committees incorporated in the U.N. These include :F.A.O. —Food and Agriculture Organisation; U.N.I. C.E.F. — United Nations Children's Fund; I.L.O. — International Labour Organisation; E.P.T.A.—Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance; U.N.R.W.A.—United Nations Relief and Works Agency, etc. The chief cause for which the U.N. has been set up is in helping: • To foster mutual understanding, goodwill, co-operation and fair dealing among the nations. • To promote among the people of Australia knowledge of the U.N. and its work, and an adequate understanding of its rights and duties of Australia as a member thereof. • To provide a means for co-operation among the several organisations and persons interested in overseas relief and rehabiltation and other matters, including the organisation of public appeals and the raising of mony for such relief and rehabilitation. It is to these ends that an office was established in Perth—to extend the influence of the U.N. Another item reported at the A.Y.C. meeting was the availability of advertising space in "Tom's Weekly" in the column headed "Youh Forum." Any branch interested in advertising their activities is invited to do so by submitting information through the Y.C.W. Office. The meeting was also informed of a new foundation being set up throughout Australia known as C.A.M.E.R.A.—Commonwealth Advance Movement Encouraging Responsibility Towards Alcohol. Several meetings have been held, the next one scheduled for Monday, August 21, at the Y.M.C.A., Murray Street„ at 5.30 p.m. This wil include a film and talk by Inspector McDonald and a member of A.A. Anyone interested in attending such a meeting can do so by contacting the Y.C.W. Office. The C.A.M.E.R.A. Foundation may be described briefly as a National Alcohol Research and Education Foundation.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
AUGUST 17
St. Clare of Montefalco
•
St. Clare is claimed by both Augustinian and Franciscan Orders. She was a Francis:an Tertiary but when the pious woman with whom she was associated wished to adopt a regular conventual life their local bishop gave them the Augustinian Rule. The picture sLows the altar of St. Clare in the convent Church of Santa Clara at Montefalco, a small town to the south of Assisi. Directly below the painting of the saint is a glass coffin containing the saint's incorrupt body which has been a source of wonder since the saint's death in 1308. Clare lived all her life in Montefalco. For her last 18 years she was abbess of the Montefalco convent. Her words kept alive in her community a great desire for perfection. Not only her words but her example: for a breach of silence she would stand barefoot in the snow while saying the Lord's Prayer 100 times. There have been innumerable saintly nuns dowrs through the centuries. Only a small proportion have been raised to the altars of the Church as this nun of Montefalco. However, it was nezr;y six centuries after her death before she was canonised. This was in 1881. by Arthur O'Leary.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Tomorrow is the great feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. Let us prepare for it with joy, for Mary is our Mother and our Queen. SCRIPTURE READING: Luke, 1: 46-55. INSTRUCTION: In this canticle—the Magnificat — Mary praises the mercy of God in the work of the Incarnation. How good God was to her? How worthy of praise! Mary enjoyed thinking a bout Him — her prayer was just the warmth in her as she felt His loving protection and care, as she admired His goodness, kindness and beauty. 0 Mary, pray for me that I may see His goodness and feel its glowing warmth so much that my soul may be bathed continually in joy—joy in Him. ROSARY (One Decade Only). FINAL PRAYER AND BLESSING: Visit this house and family, 0 Lord. Keep the devil's cunning influence away from it. Let Your holy angels dwell here to guard us in peace, and may Thy blessing be always upon us. Amen. May the blessing of Almighty God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit descend on us and remain with us for ever. Amen.

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE VATICAN COUNCIL TUESDAY AUGUST 15 SIGN OF THE CROSS THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Today our earth has sent to heaven a precious gift—a Queen. SCRIPTURE READING: Sirach (Ecclesiasticus), 24: 8-16. INSTRUCTION: The Church applies this passage from the Book of Ecclesiasticus to Our Lady because of her constant and intimate association with Christ — the Incarnate Wisdom. Today, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven to be reunited with her Son and crowned Queen of Heaven. How well she deserved that immortal crown! She offered herself and her beloved Son unto death for the redemption of mankind. Pray that Mary may reign as Queen in our hearts and in the hearts of all people. Pray to her for the grace of final perseverance and a happy death so that one day we may be with her in heaven.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: I am called by God to a special vocation— to do a work for Him that no one else can do.
Teach us, dear Lord, to know what is right and give us the grace and strength to do it. SCRIPTURE READING: Galatians, 5: 16-24
SCRIPTURE READING:
INSTRUCTION: St. Paul warns as here of the struggle of man against the weakness of his nature. We are God's soldiers and we prove our worth when we have to fight. We grow in grace, too, by every successful fight. For these reasons God allows us to be tempted. We should not be afraid nor surprised at any temptation. God has assured us that He will give all the grace we need to fight to victory
Matthew, 5: 13-16. INSTRUCTION: In this passage Our Lord points out the duty of each one of us to spread the Kingdom of Christ on earth. God does not wish us to be unfruitful possessors of our faith, of His blessings and His love; He does not wish us to guard, like hidden wealth, the treasures of eternity and of grace. The Second Vatican Council points out that each of us must become a true witness of Christ and help spread the Gospel at school, at home, at work and in our recreation.

CROSS THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Grant me grace, Lord, to see the good in others and to love them as you love me.
SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew, 6, 25-34. INSTRUCTION: In the Gospel of today's Mass, Jesus points out that our love for God must be marked by loyalty and trust. We must not let anxiety and worry overwhelm us. for God is our Father and He knows our every need. Let us then do our best, lay aside all worry and place our confidence in our heavenly Father. Even if we seem to fail, the failure is only apparent. It is sent by God to produce some greater success — to make us more humble or patient, to teach us lessons that can only be learned in failure and sorrow.
SCRIPTURE READING: John, 13: 33-35. INSTRUCTION: In this passage Christ gives us a new command — a command that is to distinguish every true Christian. God does not oblige us to "like" everyone, 131-_ to "love" them. The first is a natural feeling that we have for those whose personality and temperament are attractive to us. It will be easy for us to like them and to love them. There will be others, however, who are distasteful to us, whose qualities we simply cannot like. But we can love them, because love is above the natural. Love, means seeing them as souls — precious souls for whom Christ died. Love means wishing them well, praying for them and being kind to them. Let us ask for the grace to see the good in others and to love them as God loves us.

THE WAY WE BECAME THE BIGGEST USED CAR DISTRIBUTORS IN THE STATE BY TAKING CARE OF THE LITTLE THINGS Sure we have every engine double checked, upholstery and ashtrays cleaned, a gleaming polish and an inside and out steam clean, but we also attend to those irritating little jobs like car insurance, sickness and accident and unemployment insurance, transfer and arranging the proper finance. Fifteen thousand people are driving Motorama cars, that's proof in itself. Attention to the little things has made Motorama the State's biggest used car distributors.
