Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses . 111T is easier to find a person who has always been good than it is to find a person who has done evil only once. HEALTH is easy to keep when we have it, but difficult to recover when one loses it. INNOCENCE has a power — the continuity of goodness. BADNESS is like a small hole in the dyke—it heralds disaster. ONCE a dewdrop is taken from the rose, it is almost impossible to put it back; squeeze the rosebud and its tint can never be restored. GOODNESS possessed is easily kept but goodness lost is re-won only with a struggle. PARADISE is easier to dwell in than to re-enter. When Cain killed his brother, he was fearful of being killed. Dreading rejection, he heard two of the most profound utterances which have since been verified in the lives of all who have the innocence which tumbles amid the stars. The first was: If you do what is wrong your guilt like a tiger will crouch at your door. The murder done is not done. As Shakespeare says: "Murder will out." It is not done and finished. Theft is not done with even when undiscovered: "Res Clamat Domino." The object stolen cries out for its owner.
An aura of immortality hovers over every act. However much we throw it down the cellar stairs as forgotten rubbish, it somehow or other breeds rats which gnaw and bite into our conscience. The injustices, excesses and infidelities we thought were transient become stagnant pools of discontent.
ANY MOMENT drink as we brew; we WEharvest as we reap; we gather what we scatter; we lie on beds we make. The debits show up in the audit. We may deny our responsibilities for the violation of conscience, we may drug ourselves into unreason and call it "religion," but the beast crouches at the door, ready to spring at any moment. In the moral order there is no seed that does not sprout. Each act against Love is a witness, a surprise witness, who takes the stand against us. If the law we violated were of our making, we could annul it and we could make conscience testify on our behalf. But it argues against us when others are with us, and it cannot be bought as a witness in a civil court. Our memory has in it everything we put into it, like a computer. We may dull it, but like the morning mists which hid the landscape, there comes later the sun which drives them away
and we stand revealed as we are. The invisible writing appears under the chemical of a light from another world. The beast crouches, the memory haunts, the brood of serpents hidden in the daytime of activity comes out at night to sting and bite.

T'S an interesting phenomenon that as we find ourselves re-evaluating our whole approach to the teaching of religion to children, we find a growing emphasis on moving education in human sexuality f rom the home to the school, thereby opening ourselves to the same type of imbalance. The danger in both instances is exactly the same—we attempt to treat too academically a subject matter which must be learned in the total context of human life; in the first instance it is the relationship of man to God; in the second, the relationship of man to man. The present attempts at renewal in the teachings of religion, which are being spearheaded by the National Centre of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, provide us with some extremely valuable insights for the programme of education in sexuality that will soon become a pa-:t cf th total educationa! picture.

CATECHETICAL experts are convinced that the religious training of children is strongly dependent on the role that parents play in the child's life.
ROLE
A loving, trustful relationship between husband and wife —one that is founded on the mutual respect that each has for the other as a person, and that leads each to affirm what is good in the other freely and without domination—is the type of relationship that speaks to the child of God's loving concern for him. As the child is caught up into the on-going family life of parents and other family members, he comes to know himself as a person, and to begin to appreciate his own individuality. It might well be observed, parenthetically, that the lack of this realisation leads to the deepest frustration, hostility and rebellion. This is often the case of the family in poverty, and the results are felt powerfully in cases like Watts or Newark. At any rate, the contribution of thc parents prepares the ground, so to speak, for the virtue of faith to mature and to tind expression. As the child progresses through school and is subject to other

agencies of socialisation, he becomes more aware of his Christian responsibilities. His parents, and his teachers, particularly those responsible for his religious education, must respect the mysterious process of human unfolding, and must equally appreciate the deepening of Christian commitment. Rather than shield the child from the world., the teacher helps the child to interpret the social situation in which he lives, granting him always a freedom to express his own insights and perceptions. The curiosity and investigative bent of the child is one of the teacher's greatest assets in the educative process. The genius of good teachers is their ability to trigger the curiosity and patiently await the child's formulation of his own questions.

IT is not my purpose here to give a course in catechetics, but to show clearly how the same qualities of a good catechist are necessary in teaching human sexuality. Again, the basic reponsibility and primary opportunity falls to the parents.

NEWS.—At Bedford Park, the activities of the leaders' group over the last few months have mainly been concerned with functions in aid of our Miss. Y.C.W Quest entrant, Lynley Thomson. Functions such as a car trial, barbecue and discotheque have aided social activity in the parish and have benefited those who attended. Special thanks must go to Lyn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomson, whose efforts and support have provided the background for the whole project. At Como last Saturday, July 29, a barbecue was held at 29 Success Crescent, St. Lucia, proceeds going to our Miss Y.C.W. entrant. The night was a success, and music was supplied by leaders P. Sheridan, K. Davis and D. Dowsett, who sang folk songs and were well received by all. A wiglet and floral demonstration will be held at the Como school, Thelma Street, on Friday night, August 4. This promises to be a very interesting evening and should be well attended. Recently the Mt. Yokine Y.C.W. (girls and boys) have been holding functions in aid of our Miss Y.C.W. entrant, Janet Baker. These included a folk night, car trial, a cake stall and a couple of house parties. The most recent of these parties was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarke, whom we wish to thank very sincerely for their help. We hope in the future all our social events will be as successful as in the past. A variety show will be held at 8 p.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Hall, Camberwell Street, East Victoria Park, on Sunday. August 6. SPORT TALK.—On the football scene, Como had a great clash with Applecross, who got on top in the first quarter. Then during the next three quarters Como lifted themselves and went on to win by three goals. A great team effort by all. In Bedford Park, the basketball competition is still serving the needs of at least thirty girls in the parish, with three out of four teams occupying good positions in their various grades. Special thanks here to Marcia Crispin (coach) and congratulations also to these girls who were chosen for the State teams—Carmel Barlow (senior), Ann Gray ( junior) Valerie Tobb (junior) and Marcia Crispin (junior state coach). NEDLANDS.—The Y.C.W. is under way in Nedlands with Anne Bamblett as president of the girls' group assisted by other willing workers under the guidance of Father D. Foley, chaplain to the group. The first public function was a barbecuedance held on April 5 at St. Theresa's school, which was successful, proving that more youth activities are necessary for the parish. Another barbecue was held on May 28, and our first general meeting was held on June 25, when our entrant in the Miss Y.C.W. Quest, Miss Christine McCarthy, was chosen. To raise funds for this quest a card party was held recently at which we had the support of adults both of this parish and neighbouring branches. Now we trust we will have the same support for our marathon walk to be held on Saturday, August 5, once again to aid our quest entrant.

Shown is the Church of St. Paul in Naples. In the crypt a new sanctuary w as consecrated in June, 1965. It contains the tomb of St. Cajetan (Gaetano) the founder of the Theatine Fathers who endeavour to imitate the manner of life of the Apostles. In the foreground is a giant statue of the founder of the Order. The saint's zeal for the salvation of others caused him to be called the Hunter of Souls. It was said that he was an angel at the altar and an apostle in the pulpit. Cajetan went to Padua University and distinguished himself in theology; he took the degree of doctor in civil and canon law. But he was 30 before he commenced his studies to be a priest. In Vicenza, his hometown, and in the Venetian Republic he sought out the poor and skk and cared for the incurables in the hospitals. Others joined him in his work and in Rome he founded the Theatines. Bishop Thomas Goldwell, the last survivor of the old hierarchy of Englend and Wales, was a Theatine, who entered the house of St. Paul in Napk% in 1547 — the year of St. Cajetan's death. by Arthur O'Leary.
