T seems that human nature just cannot live without infallibility of some kind or other.

IN the sixteenth century, the tiara was torn off the Pontifical head and, as Chesterton said, the head was also pulled off with it. Then the crown of infallibility fell to the Bible and the individual interpreter. In this day, infallibility is claimed by the individual without the guidance of God, Pope, Bible or society. How often one hears of a crooked politician who has misused public funds, or a delinquent charged with assault, saying, "my conscience is clear." St. Paul said also that his conscience was clear, but he was not thereby justified. The Power philosophies claim the dictator is the conscience of the people, without being subject to any higher law. Now it is the individual's FEELING about a thing which makes it good, not its relation to a measure or an object outside.
