THE Holy See has issued a new instruction on Eucharistic worship which encourages wider concelebration of Mass as a sign of the unity of the priesthood and liberalises permission to receive Communion under both species.

F one hears of a new psychological theory, such as the

ability to see the future in a dim way, or reads of a drug which retards old age, there is almost a cosmic rush to the conclusion that in a few years humanity will be free from error and immune from disease. THIS URGE to perfection is right and good, for there is no reason why the evolutionary process should stand still once it comes to man. But the fallacy is that man always thinks of this perfection as coming to him without his own effort or the exercise of his own will. Perfection is regarded as available without cost, not like playing the piano„ which is born of a thousand acts of the will and the tediousness of exercises. Perfection is not something which is given to its; rather it is something we acquire. It comes not like a surprise legacy which we did not earn or merit; rather it is as a prize won by blood and sweat and tears. Perfection has something to do with becoming what we are not, and that this

becoming is achieved through willing, self-discipline and even suffering, implies an ideal above us and one towards which we strive.

SUPPOSE a man wishes to be a good archaeologist, such as Heinrich Schliemann. Three factors would be required—a recognition of the fact that there was much to learn; a realisation of an ideal and the working towards it as the task of his life; a sense of his own imperfection. This last factor came to Schliemann as a boy of seven when his father told him about the heroes of Homer and how the mighty city of Troy was levelled and burned. The idea of perfection from the point of view of Greek archaeology would be to discover the city of Troy. When his father told him that nobody knew where the city of Troy stood, to him perfection was expressed in the statement: "When I am big, I shall go to Greece and find Troy and the king's treasure." The third stage was the development of that idea. He learned many modern languages, studied Greek history and Homer until he knew him by heart. Finally, in the year 1783, after digging up 325.000 cubic yards of earth, he found Troy and the king's treasure.

wanting any goodness except what is external to them. But when they become humble, feel needy and empty, no longer rely on the dirty rags of self-righteousness, then they become capable of aborbing a Power from above. But maybe if we had a "hole in our head" some grace from heaven could ger into our head, just as sunlight gets in the "hole in the house- called a window. Grace here means a gift that is added to our con. scious weakness, a vision to our mind, and a power to our will; it is something we cannot supply ourselves, and for which we can only be grateful. Being "whole" or -authentic" or "perfect" then requires effort on our part to make our sail boat, while trusting in God to fill the sails with wind. Along with our striving, there is a "givenness" the moment we cease to be egotists. In our humble moments, our will. power receives a new impetus of energy and we are carried along by a Power other than itself. It is like a swimmer supported by surging waves. He swims, but the waves are with him—yet he swims.

Noting that sex education has traditionally been the responsibility of parents and family, the point is well made that the task is literally being forced on the school. Some of the reasons for this trend are cited, but you cannot escape the impression that parents are concerned and confused about the changing attitudes towards sex, and are almost frantically looking for some other agency to relieve them of their responsibility. Many school systems are already involved and T.me makes special note of the efforts of the Family Life Bureau of the New York Archdiocese. It should be noted here that there are many other creative and :maginative programmes

TIME touches a sensitive nerve when it notes that although many parents are inept at or uncomfortable about sex education at home, there are also few teachers who can adequately handle it in school, and some who positively should not be allowed to try. Furthermore, it Is generally agreed that parents should help children form attitudes from earliest years—from the time they begin to talk and exercise their natural curiosity. How much information should be imparted, and when, are the unsettled questions.

SUGGESTIONS

AT the risk of being overly repetitive, and yet realising that repetition can be valuable. I would offer the following observations. First of all, we are not likely to find a complete substitute for parents and family in educating children about human sexuality. The school is unable to provide attitude formation, moral

direction, and value orientation. Sexuality touches personhood, and how a person uses his or her sexuality is closely related to his ideas of responsibility to God and to other persons. Observing that a straight moral lecture on sex goes nowhere in the school, the Time analysis overlooks the fact that many of our young people are interested in a dialogical process where they can air their views, confront moral strictures, and formulate a meaningful ethic that will rise out of positive religious formation and a deep concern for the good of the other person. Parents and family members must play an important and directive role in helping young people formulate attitudes. The churches, and by thisImean the local church and its clergy and religious educators, must supply motivation, encouragement, information and a sence of responsibility to parents. This goes beyond the private conference between the pastor and Mr. and Mrs. Jones. FINALLY„ Time's essay shows that the variety of programmes and approaches in the school indicates that we are still groping for some kind of blueprint. We have come a long way— quickly from Puritanism and Jansenism. A real danger is that we expect to find final answers immediately and almost miraculously. Time seems to recognise that society will in the long run reflect the values of the family, and that these values are the bases of the principles that will direct the activity of the young. The concluding sentences are a good summation: "Parents . . . cannot and should not look to the schools for decisive help. They will have to re-define or reassert their own morality in the home and in society at large. And that will take a great deal more than sex education, or education of any kind."

COTTESLOE.—On Thursday„ June 15, about 250 parishioners and friends, both young and old, attended the Second Annual Ball organised by the Star of the Sea Youth Club. The Ball was held at the Cottesloe Civic Centre and all proceeds will be donated to four parish priests in separate dioceses in India to help with local famine relief. During the evening the Cottesloe entrant for the Miss Y.C.W. Quest was chosen by a panel of judges and the Youth Club wishes to extend a special thanks to Mrs. D. Cullity, Mr. F. Walsh and Mr. B. Heagney, who acted in this role. Miss Judy Meehan, last year's vice-president of the club, was a popular choice as the representative of the Youth Club. The evening proved to be once again a great success both financially as well as socially.
