"Thou shalt NOT." Love is positive: "LOVE God and LOVE neighbour." Law is for moderation; love is generous. On the Last Day when He will come to render to every man according to his works, it will be by charity to God and to fellowman that salvation will be decided. Until the consummation of time, Christ will move through the world hidden under the guise of the needy, the poor, and the oppressed.

Once a person begins to realise that the world is in the condition it is because it has broken the moral law of God, the first step in the right direction has been taken. St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco, on May 21. Mother Agnes became a member of the Institute of St. John of God in Australia in 1899, four years after its foundation from Co. Wexford, Ireland. She was the first New Zealand aspirant to the Order, having come to the Goldfields to engage in a nursing career at the Kalgoorlie District Hospital. She early became acquainted with the Sisters of St. John of God at the neighbouring institution, where a small band of pioneer nursing Sisters devotedly served the fever-stricken miners since 1897. In the providence of God, the young nurse, from the beginning, displayed a keen interest in the Catholic Faith, which, after instruction, she ardently embraced. T
HE Wall Street Journal recently had a long and perceptive article on the
stress and strain of executive life on marriage and family living. l'HE ''Man in the Grey Flannel Suit" image of not too many years ago gave the impression that the successful executive, because of his success., found his wife less romantically charming than the sophisticated women in whose company he often found himself. Infidelity, adultery and divorce were the logical results. The author of the Journal article, John Barnett, describes the current problem and its far more dangerous possibilities. The young executive dedicates himself wholeheartedly to company and job, and this dedication requires all his time, energy and interest. He is often driven by an unbridled ambition, and the company's approval of
his success, in terms of promotions, salary raises, and nebulous promises of big• future, is the siren call beckoning him to a greater outpouring of time and energy. The cost of the outpouring is a limitation of interest in wife, home and family, and a near physical exhaustion that leaves him only a shadow of his former self. Only rarely does this lead to divorce. Adultery is also infrequent, and seems to be more of a temptation for the woman than the man. The real problem is that the marriage degenerates into a mere two living cheaper than one, excepting the cost of the psychiatrist. A woman finds herself isolated from her husband's main interest, deprived of communication and affection, and frequently lacking the ability to reach him and restore the lost sense of personhood and community. She finds that she has to assume the full burden of parenthood, or may do so as something of an escape.
