POPE PAUL VI has voiced his "bitterness" over tendencies within the Church today which threaten liturgical renewal. Receiving members attending the plenary session of the Consilium, the commission for the Implementation of the Ecumenical Council's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the Pope cited three points which gave rise to his bitterness.

The priests' petition said Archbishop Young had renewed the life of the Church in Tasmania and that it was feared his removal at this time could result in the interruption or even the cessation of the work he had begun. It gives husband and wife a means of self-d:sclosure for which no words can be found. There comes a time in all love when, as the poet put it: "Love is too deep for words." When we come to know certain things we cannot put ourselves back in ignorance, and in marriage this man has made her a woman and she has made him a man. And it symbolises the underlying and undying unity of man and heart, of what Barth calls "a blessed frenzy, a breathtaking dialectic of selffulfilment and self-forgetfulness."

dener and marriage is the wedding of the seed and the garden. The unity in marriage is even c loser than the unity of earth and seed; it is more like that of a mind and that which is known.

THE union is not a transient experience, for unlike any other kind of relationship, it affects both the body and the soul. Take, for example, covetousness as contrasted with adultery. Stolen goods may be returned, or they may be compensated for, but the sex act, once committed with another person cannot be undone. ,Something indelible, almost eternal, has been stamped, and each has undergone a radical change which cannot be blotted out. Love is like liberty. It must be constantly watched. Because love is a garden. the marriage of earth and seed is not enough; there must also be care- -

The freedom of the individual is a highly popular concept in presentday society, and in reading the history o f the Church's teaching on marriage, one finds that it has always been a major consideration. Man, in every era of his history, has shown great difficulty in understanding freedom and of harmonising his understandin2, with a sense of responsibility and a concern for the good of others.

As noted above, Pope Paul emphasises the freedom of the individual in regard to marriage and child-bearing, stating that where freedom is lacking, "human dignity has ceased to exist.."

RESPONSIBILITY

THE Pope logi cally m oves from this discussion of freedom to the matter of responsible parenthood. ln urging couples to form their conscience correctly, he asks that one of the factors in their consideration be the responsibility that they have towards the society in which they live. Without attempting to give a final statement on birth control, Pope Paul restates the guidelines of Vatican II and reminds us that human solutions to world problems cannot be formulated in opposition to the moral law. In some cases, the teaching of the Church in the specific application of the moral law requires data from other sciences and a precise formulation, as is true in the case of the -pill." The matters of abortion and child euthanasia are quite different, violating human life and the freedom of the individual.

DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLES Faced by the world-wide problem of poverty, Pope Paul recognises that population increase can be a serious difficulty, especially when it grows more quickly than resources. This can be true on a national level, as in India and many Latin American countries, or in the case of family units, as in an affluent nation like the United States, where some families have not yet been able to avail themselves of the opportunities of education, steady employment, housing and medical aid. He does emphasise that freedom of decision by the couple must be safeguarded by government in any of its programmes. The ultimate solution to the prob!em of birth control, like many other human problems, is still to be worked for. These problems must be worked out in the context of a complete humanism. as Pope Paul states in the concluding sentences of this section of the encyclical: "Man can organise the world apart from God, but 'without God man can organise it in the end only to man's detriment' . . . There is no true humanism but that which is open to the absolute and is conscious of a vocation which gives human life its true meaning." to say about the walk: "Cardinal Cardijn, the founder of the Young Christian Workers' Movement, once said: 'In the past people made the mistake of believing that because they were baptised, that is all they had to do. As Y.C.W. members, we join with Cardinal Cardijn in thinking that this is not enough. -The Y.C.W. youth organisation is a movement which has adopted See, Judge and Act as its means of attaining Christian attitudes. The walk began at a Y.C.W. meeting of girls. It arose from a Gospel reading that 'Anyone who does not' take up his cross and follow in My 'footsteps is not worthy of Me.' They JUDGED that many did not do very much at all. They then dedided to make their prayer a reality. They decided to ACT, and use their organisation to help others by arranging a Lenten Walk, a walk that would get many others also to

make an act of denial for Lent. No one was to get any monetary gain, they were only to put something into it. "The Lenten Walk began in a spirit of prayer and it was carried out in a spirit of self-denial. Many meetings and much work went into its preparation. During the walk many of the walkers visited the churches along the route, and it was most pleasing to have many non-Catholic friends join us. Our participation in the walk will enable the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary to give a spiritual lift to many girls at their retreat house, and will also help the Australian Bishops to give material assistance to many people. It is then for these reasons that we willingly give away the results of our walk. "The walk has led many young people and their parents into thinking that there really is something in the Y.C.W. after all. DANCES.—At the recent Boys' Council meeting, the fact that many dances were being held on the same night in nearby areas was again discussed. The representatives of the Applecross dance and the St. Joachim's dance resolved that they intended attracting different types of crowds, and consequently these two dances did not really clash. The discussion about the dances revealed that there were soon to be a few more 50-50 dances South of the River and this will again introduce the problem of dances clashing. The solution may lie with the region itself to function efficiently by organising its own dance roster. REQUEST FOR BATHERS.—A request has come through from the Native Missions in the Kimberley area for bathers (for any age group), as there is a shortage of these among

the native children. The bathers can be left at the Y.C.W. Office„ 77 St. George's Terrace, Perth. The offer will be greatly appreciated. GENERAL MEETINGS.—Victoria Park have arranged a general meeting for Sunday night, April 30, at 7 o'clock in St. Joachim's School hall. Catherine Benincasa was born in Siena in 1347. She died in her midthirties, yet in that short lifetime her fame was such that today she is, with St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy. The picture shows the house where she was born and reared. It has been preserved intact by her fellow-citizens and is today a sanctuary. Catherine subjected herself to great mortifications; her only support during long fasts was Holy Communion. She made of her room a holy cell where she devoted long periods to prayer. As a Dominican tertiary she attended the sick and visited the prisons. Since 1309 the popes had resided at Avignon in France. In 1376 St. Catherine visited Pope Greory XI beseeching him to transfer the Papal court back t o Rome. He probably intended to go anyway but the saint's visit certainly hastened his departure. Letter after letter Catherine wrote to Europe's leaders — lay and clerical — urging them to do all possible to ensure a united Christendom. Her death was mourned by all. by Arthur O'Leary.
