SUCH fatigue is very different from what might be described as our modern fatigue, which is not physical but existential fatigue. Physical fatigue is what a ditch digger feels at the end of a day, or a mother who lifts a 201b. baby 100 times a day, which is equivalent to raising a ton of weight a day.
complains of being FATIGUE 'tired or even 'tired out. THIS is nothing to be ashamed of, for the good Lord Himself was "tired" at Jacob's well; when He sat down to rest, He was interrupted by a woman who came to draw water. His fatigue was relieved by service to her soul.
The other kind of fatigue is existential, which is being tired of living— "tired of living and feard of dying;" it oozes from the tube of meaninglessness of life; it is the journeying down a road which has no city at the end; a shooting of arrows without a target. Nothing in all the world bores like the meaninglessness of life.
ON another occasion, when He sought to be hid, crowds sought Him out and He responded to their demands by healing the sick. A Syro-Phoenician woman pushed through a crowd and touched the hem of His garment in hope that she might be healed of haemorrhage. Her touch was probably no different than anyone else's, for the Gospel describes this scene as one in which "everyone pressed Him round about." Her touch.. however, was slightly different for she touched with hope; the others touched only physically. Helping her made Him feel a kind of exhaustion for He said that He "felt a power go out from Him."
What are some releases from fatigue? The first is service or the love of helping others in distress. Very often at the end of a day, I am physically exhausted— too tired to do serious study and the words in a book almost blur. But let someone come in who needs help, spiritual, psychological or any other kind, and immediately I feel revived. Nothing revives the spirit like caring for others.
MENTAL F ATIGUE
WE are often more tired in mind than we are tired in the body. As one physician wrote: "Your mental point of view is the all-powerful criterion where fatigue is concerned. It

FATIGUE is the way you look at a thing that counts, rather than what it is." When the fatigue is mental, kindness to fellow man restores, rather than saps physical strength. Nothing makes the heart glow like fanning the tiny flame of the neighbour. It may impoverish our 'spare time, but it renovates our eternal wellsprings. The great advantage of this kind of relief from fatigue is that the neighbour is also present. He is constantly with us. As Chesterton put it: "Precisely because he may be anybody, he is everybody." The second relief from fatigue is meditation. Set aside a half-hour a day to present plans, programmes and difficulties of day before the Lord. General Douglas MacArthur told me:: "I I did not have two hours of meditation a day, I never could fight a war." This period of quiet helps us distinguish the accidental from the essentials. Like Abraham, we receive summons to leave the country of worry or preoccupation. "Go out of this country to the land which I will show you." The leaving of routine is the easiest way to break routine. THE resolves we take in meditation seep down into our subconsciousness, and during the day they come out as acts. The mind is also washed pure of its imperfections and

the heart becomes open to unseen and invisible influences. Meditation is not all talk, after a while it begins to be a dialogue. Most people do not give them_ selves time to listen. Scripture says: "Be still and know that I am God." Atheism is worry; meditation is peace. Without meditation we are split personalities„ which in the words of Stephen Spender we "allow gradually the traffic to smother with noise and fog the flowering of the spirit." We live in t wo worlds—the world we see, and the world we seek. The first can crowd out the second, and leave us fatigued and exhausted unless we establish communion with that other world which holds us together. Let any man diligently read the Gospels for a minutes a day, and diligently meditate on them, applying them to his own life, his foibles and his weaknesses, and he will lose that "Icouldn't-care-less" feeling which is at the root of all disquiet. We cannot find rest except in a resting place, and that is found in the quiet hour. Strange as it may seem, it is also the man who meditates who is the real doer. Every man is tired until he has discovered his own soul—even in its blackness. Then one begins to hear the Voice: "Come to Me, all ye who labour, and find rest for your soul."

Around The Diocese . . . . COUNCIL MEETING.—The third boys' council meeting this year will be held at the Y.C.W. Office on Monday, April 17, commencing at 7.30 p.m. sharp. It is hoped that ALL presidents will attend. PALMYRA.—There are five to six girls attending the regular weekly meeting at Palmyra. A new team of four girls is beginning this week and any girl in the area who would Ake to join this new group can do so by ringing Betty Waddell at work on 23-0181 or contacting the parish priest. To raise funds for the full-time workers' wage account, a "Car -Wash" has been organised—the next one to be held on .Saturday, April 22, and also the Saturday following. The first car-wash was held last Saturday and proved quite successful and very "refreshing." Y.C.W. PERSONALITY RESIGNS. — We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Pauline Knight who has this week resigned as the girls' full-time Y.C.W. worker and to wish her every success and happiness in the future. An ex-branch president, Bernadette Hegney, has taken over as "full-timer- and we also wish her every success in her new job. CATHOLIC BALL. — This year's Catholic Ball will be held on Monday, May 22, at the Embassy Ballroom. Debutantes at this ball will be able to take part in the "Debutante College of the Year Ball" being sponsored by the Kindergarten Teachers. Tickets are available from the Y.C.W. Office, Pellegrini's, Catholic Library or the Embassy. INTERNATIONAL VISITOR. — Rene Delecluse, adviser to the Lay Apostolate in Singapore and Malaysia, returning via Perth from Singapore to France, gave two very informative talks to the Y.C.W. over the weekend. The first one was to about a hundred members at the Y.C.W. Centre where he spoke 3n Y.C.W.'s part in an international movement and also of the need to force ourselves to realise fully the problems of world hunger.
He combined this with a campaign which Y.C.W. is to undertake on Freedom From Hunger. This point will also be discussed at the next boys' council meeting. The second talk by Rene was addressed to members of both the Bunbury and Perth dioceses. Here such matters as our thinking on free time and the difference in problems between country and city areas were discussed. Also the lack of co-operation between Y.C.W. and other parish organisations, such as family
groups and Y.C.S.„ was brought to the fore.
We would like to extend our thanks to Rene as his visit to Perth has been very help._ ful Y.C.W.-wise. "MISS Y.C.W."—JOCIST BALL. — Nominations are coming in for the Miss Y.C.W. Quest which is to be run in conjunction with this year's Jocist Ball. The quest is intended to involve each branch's members, ex-member and parents through socials organised to raise their entrant's nomination fee. The proceeds from the quest and the ball are to be used for
Y.C.W. Youth Centres at Marian Lodge and Point Peron. With this purpose in mind, the organisers are appealing to ex-members or parents who are interested in helping in any way to contact the Y.C.W. Born near Boulogne on the English Channel, this saint's one ambition was to join an austere relig:ous order. However, he was compelled because of ill health to leave both the Trappists and the Carthusians. Leading a life of severe penance he spent some years travelling on foot to the various shrines of Christendom. In 1777 he came to Rome and settled in the ruins of the Colosseum. IVIcHUGH N last week's column we picked up on some thoughts of Ashley Montagu regarding the role of women in the modern world, and the logical follow-up for this week is to do the some for men. THE MALE IMAGE IS EVEN MORE MYSTERIOUS THAN THAT OF WOMAN, PROBABLY BECAUSE SO LITTLE REAL MENTION IS PAID TO THE WHOLE MA1-.1.h,R. Dr. Montague chose one small point to graphically portray the confusion that surrounds the training of small boys. From earliest years, boys in America are taught not to cry. Crying is looked on as specifically feminine or sissy, and something to be overcome by the real man. Interestingly enough, whether one agrees or not, 41.•
the process of training is highly effective. I have seen little boys, two or three years of age, who would literally fight back the tears despite great emotional or physical turmoil within them.
RESPECT EMOTIONS
HOWEVER, t h e important point is not whether boy, cry or not., but whether they are taught to respect their own emotions. The cultural pressure put upon the male to conceal or ignore his emotions very often leads to a denial of basic human drives, or worse, a subversion of those same drives. Very often physical activity will provide the opportunity to work off steam and to restore some sense of balance. Crying, or laughing for that matter, are external expressions of internal emotion. To teach a child to avoid crying needn't be harmful, but to infer that there is 'something weak about feeling sad, or hurt, or frus-

trated is utterly foolish. The youngster bites his lip rather than cry, then later finds that he needs some outlet and gives vent to his emotion in some irrational tirade. For instance, the child who abuses his toys, the adolescent who wantonly destroys the property of others, who rants, raves and screams, is a great deal more unmanly than the man who buries his head in his hands and sheds a few tears. It isn't an uncommon thing for the "little man" who doesn't cry to get more than his share of maternal interest, only to grow up expecting every female to mother him or at least to offer pleasant gratifications to suit his every mood.

THERE are fewer male heroes to emulate, the disciplinary system of the school avoids corporal punishment which holds some meaning for a boy, and the highly specialised and competitive world in which the man in t omorrow will have to find his way seems too far removed from the years of boyhood or adolescence to supply any great goals or motivation. Happily, today's father seems highly interested and concerned about his relationship with his sons, and we are finding more male teachers in the elementary school system. Women are also seeking a greater manliness in men, and all these things contribute to a clearer definition of manhood and a healthier attempt at achieving proper sexual maturity. For the record, I still favour men not crying, and I don't see that such a cultural expectation does any great harm. I do think that a man has to come to grips with his own emotional make-up, and realise that he will need some outlet for the emotional pressure that builds up within him.

THE unfortunate result of false criteria for what constitutes manhood leads to an identity confusion. A boy is uncertain as to what is expected of him. This has reached startling proportions today even in styles of dress. Long feminine hair styles, the use of perfumes and lotions, tight and clinging clothes and an over-concern about looking "nice" make it increasingly difficult to separate the men from women, let alone the men from the boys. (I might add that the adoption of male dress by the female population does not help.) Our educational system is predi cated on training young boys and girls alike, and the concept "children" tends to stymie the natural urge to achieve one's own sexual

Some have written to ask about joining the Junior Readers but gave their age as 15. When this idea was first started, it was thought that 14 should be the age limit for the birthday calls. I would be pleased if those older ones still took an interest as I am sure most do because I can see names of younger brothers and sisters cropping up in the lists. In the early days of "J.R." page we often had to wait a couple of I weeks between birthday calls. one day think that there is now not of the year that is vacant. How did Vocations Week go?
