interest for all of us. One such custom now out of date and forgotten is SPANKING. IT IS WELL TO REMEMBER THAT EVERY NEWBORN CHILD GETS A SPANKING, AND IT STARTS HIM BREATHING AND LIVING. For the benefit of those who do not know of the phenomenon called "spanking," it might be called a form of punishment that is given at one end to impress the other. God gave to parents a hand and He gave to the child an extremely wellpadded part of the anatomy. The evidence would seem to indicate that, in extreme cases, one was made for the other. Other generations believed that there was nothing which so much developed character as a pat on the back, provided it was given often enough, low enough and hard enough. What are the historical antecedents to the decline of spanking? Garages and safety razors. Ancient manuscripts testify that a flat shingle, or a razor strap were the most common instruments for disciplining the young. The shingle came from the woodshed, the razor strap from the bathroom. As garages came in, woodsheds went out. As safety razors came in, razor straps disappeared. It remains for statisticians

ONE other objection that has been m ade against spanking is that feel p arents ashamed or guilty, after they have administered it to their children. This is true when the punishment is excessive, emotional, out of all proportion to the offence, and given arbitrarily. It is, however, to be noted that these same people are not ashamed when they growl at a servant, howl at a husband and growl at the butcher who overcharged them a few cents. One parent said to a child: "This hurts me more than it does you." The boy answered: "Yes, but not in the .same place." Parents hold authority from God over their children and are responsible for them. Their children are as so much clay in their hands and what they become later on depends upon the way they have been moulded. The authority given to parents does not exist for their good. but for the good of those under them, just as the authority given to a

Fl THE point of this article is not to plead for a restoration of spanking, but rather to affirm a respect for parental authority which once used that method of making actions speak louder than words. It is not true to say that there is in general reaction against parental authority; it is more truthful to say that the parents have lacked those qualities which command respect, particularly a want of moral values. A father or mother living in a second or third marriage naturally has great difficulty in convincing a child to "never break your word." The respect that one has for a rule flows naturally from the respect that one has for the person who gives it. If Sir Donald Bradman gave a suggestion to a boy about how to hold a bat, there would be an immediate bending of energy to conform to that precept. Every defect in character creates a defect in obedience. Three out of five delinquents come from homes where there is discord between parents. Seven out of ten delinquents come from broken homes where there is no family life. Whether it be a general in an army, a bishop in a diocese, a teacher in a school, or a parent in home, there will never be respect for a command unless there is respect for the commander. It is earnestly to be hoped that the youngsters who are growing up now will not so much say: "The last generation has failed me," but rather, "I will not fail the next generation."

There will be some roles that call for man's capacities a different from woman's, and she wil' do best by refusing to assume those roles or perform those functions. It is highly important to impart to young girls a desire to be feminine, to be truly a woman. This demands a concern and compassion for humanity, a perception of the individuality of each person, and an openness that leads to acceptance and love. Interestingly, as the girl becomes enchanted with the potential of her womanhood, she benefits the world with her unique contribution, and she gains deeper insight into her maternal capacity.

Around The Diocese • • • • GENERAL MEETINGS.—The Carlisle Y.C.W. is holding its general meeting on Sunday, April 9, in St. Joachim's hall, Shepperton Road, Victoria Park. A talk will be given by a representative from the Boys' Home at Stoneville. Father Holmes also will say a few words on the Y.C.W. in general, and Guido Vogels will explain the workings of the visitational committee. The talks, not lasting much over half an hour, will be followed by entertaiment by the "Castaways." Supper and drinks will be available and admission will be 60 cents double and 40 cents single. The Morley Y.C.W. Girls are having a newcosmetic demonstration on Saturday afternoon, April 15, at the Catholic primary school in Russell Street, Morley (the first street before Pope's factory from Walter Road). "IN THIS WORLD."—The latest issue of "In This World" contains in its editorial a summary of its aims and its achievements up to date. In aiming this review to attract people who are involved with youth apostolic formation, such articles as "The Church in the World" and "Are We a Weird Mob?" illustrate what youth should be doing and is doing. Any action shown is shown as being done with Christian attitudes. Unfortunately, this review does not appear to be reaching very many youth in Perth judging by the number of subscriptions taken up here. BEACONSFIELD "BOOMS." — In the past three months this branch has nearly doubled its membership and consequently social activities have increased, and should continue this way for some time. Dances and barbecues have been held for a variety of worthy causes, including the Tasmanian Fire Relief Fund. The widely publicised Ship'n'Shore Dance showed much originality of thought and dedicated labour, while the ping-pong night also drew a large crowd and more potential members. Further events include the planning of a dance for 500. The Parish Newsletter is completely edited by the Y.C.W. Winter sport has begun once again and positions in the basketball team are keenly fought for. Meantime, International Rules Basketball is proving very popular with both groups.

The girls, Lorraine Love, Anne Barr and Gail Johnson, all agreed it was a very enjoyable and unusual weekend with the 33 other Y.C.W. girls who attended from all over Perth. Y.C.W. IN LONDON.—Ken Sullivan, an ex Perth Executive member, at present in London, has sent information on their Y.C.W. activities. Apparently London has a similar problem to Perth, where Y.C.W. activities seem more concentrated and appealing to the under -21-years group. As a result, a seminar was recently organised to discuss the Y.C.W. and the workers in their early twenties.

"MARATHON" BALL. — An informal ball will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians' parish hall in East Victoria Park on Sunday, April 23. The proceeds of the recent Marathon Walk will be presented to representatives of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and the Lenten Hunger Appeal.
DANCE ROSTER. — The minutes from the recent boys' executive meeting show that again it is necessary to discuss a Dance Roster at the next Council meeting. This point has been raised because many of the South of the River Dances are held on the same night. Practical suggestions for a solution are being sought by the executive to lessen friction between branches involved. Y.C.W. FOOTBALL.—For those over 21 who are interested in playing football and who are now no longer eligible to play with the Y.C.W. competition, training with the exY.C.W's team is held at Haig Park, East Perth (near old East Perth cemetery), on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5.30 p.m. Their coach this year is ex-State and Claremont rover John Hooper. INSTRUCTION: The fourth quality of the risen body is "Agility." By this is meant that the body becomes a perfect instrument of the soul. It opens up to the soul a new mode of access to the universe and its wonders. It is not primarily the power to move at will to any part of the universe with the speed of thought; rather, it consists in enabling the soul, through its perfectly subjected body. to penetrate the most profound mysteries of creation symbolised by material beings. Thus, in his glorified body, man will be transformed by the Holy Spirit and penetrated by His action so that he has all he needs for an inconceivably sublime life, the fulfilment of creation. Michael was born in northern Spain. In his youth he was edified by his mother's stories of the saints and set himnelf to imitate them.
