The yoke of physical necessity would be to provide for food and shelter; the yoke of moral necessity is to resist evil and live in the love of God and service of neighbour.

PHYSICAL NECESSITY

SUPPOSE first of all, that one can never provide the minimum of economic needs. What consequences follow? A hunger experiment at the University of Minnesota, in which hundreds of students voluntarily submitted themselves to starvation revealed the following f acts: "Decreased sociability . . . it was hard to sit next to a comrade who had extra food . . . the building up of 'ingroup' feelings which excluded nonstarving friends and the technical staff . . . quarrelling with those who were thought to have an extra mouthful."

Hunger, misery and want override all moral considerations and drive victims to crime, delinquency and a hatred of humanity. Now suppose that one is under no economic necessity, but on the contrary, has an abundance. The danger here arises that the moral necessity to bear love to fellowman and gratitude to God may be sunk under the weight of "getting more." Such a person begins to do two things —he seeks isolation from others, especially those who have less, and, secondly, it begins to warp his personality. As Doestoevski said: "He heaps up riches for himself and thinks, 'how strong I am now and how secure,' and in his madness, he does not understand that the more heaps up, the more he sinks into destructive impotence . . . he has trained himself not to believe in the help of others, in men and humanity, and only trembles for fear he should lose his money and the privileges he has won for himself." Thus the nrri who has too little and the man who has too much both end in isolation, distrust and self-destruction. The scavenger among the garbage pails of a city dump and the hoarder with his pile are cut from the same piece of psychological cloth. The prophet Haggai said of the latter group: "You eat . . . but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves but no one is warm; and he who 'earns wages, puts them into a bag with holes." MORAL NEcEssITY

EVERYONE is under a moral necessity to be at Pe ace with himself, to love not under law but under the promptings of the Spirit of Love, with vertical relations to the Heavenly Father and horizontal relations to fellowman. Vertical relations with God., expressed though saying our prayers, following the new liturgy are not enough. The priest and the Levite in the story of the Good Samaritan represent a self-centred legalistic religiosity in which each is interested only in his own faith and his

own holiness. This is pietism—not piety, The Samaritan was concerned with horizontal relations to his neighbour's needs. Like the Father in heaven Who lets His sun shine on the just and the wicked, he puts his resources at the dis_ posal of the battered stranger on the road, whoever he happens to be. He does not have the necessary medi_ eines, but he uses what he has —wine and oil; he has no stretcher, so he uses a donkey; there is no hospital, so he takes the wounded man to an inn; he does not have enough money to pay the innkeeper, but he gives all he has say_ ing, "I shall owe the rest." Everywhere there is the air of moral and spiritual necessity—a debtor to all men. The Kingdom of Heaven is much more than saying, "Lord, Lord," thinking the right thoughts, making the right novenas and saying the right words. "Not ever.. one who says to me "Lord, Lord" shall enter the Kingodm of Heaven, but he who does the Will of My Father in Heaven." We began by stating that in order to be normal physically and mentally, we must be under some necessity. The man who works, keeps himself mentally fit; unemployment ravages his spirit as well as his family. Thoses who are degraded by poverty often repudiate all moral necessities. On the contrary, those who are under no economic necessity but have an abundance, still are under the Moral necessity to love heir neighbour. To add to one one's having economically, while neglecting to add to one's spiritual life by loving neighbour, disturbs one mentally.

URING the past few weeks we have looked at

the

pre - school

child's learning ability, his latent creativity, and the media of communication that bring him some information about the world in which he lives.

AS I have re-read some of these articles, I wondered if they were not a bit too serious. Some of my best friends are pre-schoolers, and one of their greatest assets is that they don't take adults, or the world in which they live, too seriously. I came to realise that there are three special characteristics on the lighter side of. a child's life that we ought to pay some attention to.

The young child has an active and unbridled imagination, he likes to play, and he has a great capacity for laughter.

IMAGINATION THE child's imagination is an expression of his creativity. He has a genuine ability to put many of his experiences together and invent situations that are pleasurable to him. No doubt this involves a bit of fantasy, but even the child recognises that there is some unreality to it. So long as the child doesn't close himself off, the world of his imagination may be useful to help him recall and remember good experiences. Moreover, his sense of time is not very precise, so he can run many experiences together. Closely allied to the child's imagination is his love of play. From infancy until he enters school, play is

education, recreation relaxation, and just plain fun. We adults, who have no time for play, become tense, develop ulcers and retreat into cynicism. The child is wiser than we are; he tailors his life to his size and makes a game of it. In this way he 'savours the satisfaction of every_ discovery, and he accumulates a certain sense of security from his little successes. Adults play games, too„ but they don't always take them realistically enough —in fact, sometimes they don't even play them well. But the child- has the happy ability to play well, to express his freedom and his independence in his play. In the long run, he profits greatly from it. Because we are so concerned about the child's development and maturity. we may overlook the value of his play. And yet it is in his play that he is most really himself. The outgrowth of play for the child is happiness, expressed easily and spontaneously in laughter. We can be mystified by the laughter of children, and the contagious quality that it often has. It isn't reasoned out, nor necessarily occasioned by something we understand. Quite often, it is a tension release mechanism th:it youngsters use to avoid being ove,. come by things they don't und,estand.

The reason for treating these qualities, though,, is that we adults tend to become too serious and to overlook the fact that the child grows according to his time schedule, not according ta ours. At the same time, if parents never dream or play or laugh, the child may become frightened or opposed to growing up. He can understand that somehow they are unabl. to experience happiness. After all is said and done, balanea is the key factor. There really is a time to laugh and a time to be serious, but we needn't legislate them. An openness to life and to people prepares us to respond properly and naturally to the demands of the situation. In many cases, the child's instincts guide him better than our conditioned sense of propriety.

Almost always, it is an indication of their satisfaction with life and with people. They seem to grasp instinctively the old adage, "Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone." Perhaps it is also a

I was talking to Miss Beryl Hume, B.Sc. (Honours) M.A.. D:p. Ed., last week and she told me all about the scheme. Miss Hume is a lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Western Australia. She was born in W.A. and was educated at Perth Modern School. In 1964, she became a foreign exchange s tudent herself and spent one year at the University of Washington in Seattle. "While I was there," she said, "I was introduced to my host family, and ended up by s taying a week. Although a major factor of the scheme is that you live with your host for five days. They became my American f amily and I called on them whenever I wished." From this experience and the observations made by Miss Hume came the Host Family Scheme. It is a sub-committee of the Coordinating Committee for Overseas Students in Western Australia. It was formed to introduce newly arrived overseas students to W.A. This is only its second year in existence.. and last year proved very successful. One hundred and fifty students hosted by 110 families. However, in the next week, 250 students will arrive, from South-East Asia, and some from Africa—and host families are needed. "I would like to make it clear," said Miss Hume, "that the host families are not expected to provide accommodation. It is friendship that is needed and an occasional invitation their homes." The host family meets the student after his arrival in Western Australia and eases him into his new environment by showing him around Perth. . Introducing him to other students and friends, and explaining our customs would be of great help. But, above all, the main message is to let him know that he is not alone. Host families are drawn from different

AROUND THE DIOCESE . . . GENERAL MEETING.—Morley is organising a general meeting for about the middle of March—date yet to be decided. The topic for the girls will be a demonstration given by a cosmetician. It is hoped that more will attend and each girl bring at least one friend. At their weekly meeting, regular attendance averages 13 girls. Also a team of six girls meets at Hampton Road on Monday nights. A further ten girls meet at Ashfield every Wednesday under leaders from Morley. The girls have begun practice for the basketball season and hope to enter three teams this year. At the meeting of the girls' excutive last year the following positions were filled under the president, Pat Dolan: vice-president:, Kitty Hulshoff; secretary, Bernadette Hegney; treasurer, Betty Waddell; publicity officer, Helen Salas; and in charge of Marian Lodge, Anne Taylor. TASMANIAN FIRE APPEAL.—In aid of the Tasmanian fire relief fund, the Kalamunda Y.C.W. group is holding a dance at the Kalamunda Town Hall on March 4, Margaret Hammond and The Tag will feature. Also in aid of this cause a 50-50 dance is being held by the Bentley branch at St. Joachim's hall in Shepperton Road, Victoria Park, on Tuesday, February 28. ROTTNEST TRIP — A river cruise on the Islander to Rottnest is being organised by the Nedlands Y.C.W. on Sunday, March 5, leaving at 8.45 a.m. Bring a picnic lunch and the boat will leave for home at 4 p.m. MARATHON WALK. — An Inter -Denominational Marathon Walk will be held as part of our "Lenten Effort" on Saturday, March 11. It will start from Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Camberwell Street East Victoria Park, at 1 p.m., and finish at the Franciscan Retreat House, Hampton Road, Victoria Park. The event will be rounded off with a barbecue to commence at 7.30 p.m. Entrants are requested to seek sponsorship at the rate of a few cents a mile from friends and acquaintances and the course will be approximately t wenty miles in .length. The proceeds will be equally divided between the Lenten Hunger Appeal and the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. It is open to everybody. Persons under the age of 16 will need the consent of their parents. Entrance forms are available at the Y.C.W. Office 77 St. George's Terrace, Perth, or from any local Y.C.W. leader.
