Reade rs' Opi nion s . . Editorial A Question Of Whose Morality
P
I1RASES like . . . the new morality is here, so let's live with it . . morality is changing; we can't stop
it, so let's try and understand it . . . are so much rubbish.
If people who have a chance at forming public opinion have an attitude that people want to live lives where religion does not matter or that it is a very private concern, they ought to stop bleating about the effects of that kind of life. They ought to stop applying Christian standards or ethics to pagan situations and implying that Christianity is at fault when alarming effects take place, Morality without God is without a firm and unchanging base and will change like fashion and with it. Morality is the quality of conformity or non-conformity of a human act to the right standard of moral conduct. If it is Christian morality, then it must conform to the Christian standard, not a pagan one. There ought to be a stop to the often piousappearing bleatings from papers and periodicals which themselves contribute to the moral standard evidenced today with their regular doses of sex in pictures, detailed descriptions of rapes and platitudinous "with-it" articles about the shocking problems of sex today. Add to these the muck magazines so readily available and displayed and you have the makings of a sorry pagan mess. Education to a decent standard belongs to the mass media in all its forms as well as to the home and school. The Council Decree on the communications media aptly put it when it said: "For it is quite clear what heavy responsibilities are given to all such persons (those engaged in all aspects of the social communications field) in the present 'state of affairs. By moulding and activating the human race they can lead it upward or to ruin." 0-111-101111

PANIC has seized some minds in the modern mood to serve fellowman.
SOME think it means the end of the sacred and the holy in the world; others use it as a broom to beat religion. A sane look at what has happened in the last few centuries will really nourish our hopes, rather than drag us down to despair. The present mood concerning the sacred has very much changed from previous centuries. Three different areas can be found in which men have sought the sacred, apart from God Himself. The first area was to seek the sacred in nature — natural religions sometimes crudely developed taboos and magic, identifying the power in herbs with the power of God. God was even sometimes found in the trees, storms and insects who were not to be trampled cn lest one crushed Divinity. On a higher level, the nature was the tell-tale and revelation of God„ for from the visible things of the world, one mounted to the invisible. As Blaise Pascal wrote: "Nature has some perfections to show that she is the image of God; and some defects to show that she i.. only His image."

Neighbour Is Sacred -churchiness," rather than religion itself? It may be a complaint against worship separated and divorced from love of the needy; against folded hands which refuse to open into helping hands; against those who bring a gift to the altar while they bear enmity in their hearts against fellowman. In such cases, the Lord recommended that the gift be left at the altar until reconciliation be effected with neighbour. It will be found true that those who are intellectual atheists are often those who despise neighbour; Sartre's atheism ends in the cold formula, "hell is my neighbour." Opposite to this is the Christian doctrine that "anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother is a liar, since the man who does not love his brother whom he can see, cannot love God Whom he has never seen."

to love humanity; it is very difficult to love one particular. human. This was the great defect of making humanity sacred; it ignored John in his hunger, and Paul in his thirst. Doestoevski said that he could always love mankind, but that a particular man who was always sniffling his nose was, to him unbearable. Chesterton said that when one sits in a subway and sees the queer drunken, sodden, dope-laden - characters, one has to be more than a humanitarian to see in each and every one of them an immortal soul as precious as the soul of a Hildebrand and a Shakespeare. So humanity, as a religion, faded away. In this day we have a new area of the sacred; it is the social order. This differs from humanity, inasmuch as it considers mankind as affected by hunger, want, poverty; war, inner cities, ghettoes, slums and- disease. As nature and as humanity were no substitutes for God, neither is the social order, but it would seem to have advantages over both nature and humanity. It could very well .be that it is also a refuge from the technological order where everything is presumed to be controllable and predictable. In the concrete order, one finds the uncontrollable, namely, increasing warfare and mounting starvation.

THERE are two ways of go' ing to Perfect Love—one is direct, which is the way of monks and

in the spiritual order, as well as in tht world, there are two means of commtut cation—one is a visible contact, such delivering a letter; the other is invisible such as short wave. Everything tha is related to this kind of love, which till ancients called "Diakonia," is an essen tial element of the sacred. They do not know that the One 'Wht receives their aid may be Christ Him self: "When did we see you hungry?, the just will ask on the Day of Judg ment. But as a prince may appear jj the guise of a pauper, so too the Divini is also dressed in rags or "swaddlini bands." It is He Who says: "I an thirsty." The move then from nature to hurna nity and finally to social order is no degeneration, but a sign of hope. Thes public-spirited people would not by neighbour if Someone had not love them first. The Love of God to us pre cedes our love for neighbour and eve to God,. however little we know it. Th moon reflects the brilliance of the sun; love of neighbour is touching the hem of the garment of God, and one day that kind of love will find Celestial lip, in an ecstasy of enduring Love.

TIES THAT BIND. .. 444 The Communications Media And Learning FATHER T. MuHUGH
I
N speaking of childhood c reativity we made some
pointed suggestions last week OS to the role that
parents play in helping the child to develop. AS something of a postscript to that discussion. I would like to reflect more at length on the matter of communication to what is basically person-to-person communication, letters the telephone. It is not uncommon to find people who are convinced that all human problems would be solved if people would just sit down and talk t hings out. A lthough there is a lot of truth in this viewpoint, and recognising the necessity of personal communication in the family, I would like to focus more on the importance of what we call the communications media, their effects on the family, and the good
influence they can have as part of the long-term process of education. We enjoy the benefits of a highly effective communication network. Radio. TV, motion pictures, the printed word, are the familiar messengers that bring the news of the world into our homes within hours of its happening. Our lives are shaped, not only by what actually -happens, but also by the rapidity with which almost everyone knows about it. We are also influenced by different philosophies as reflected in the entertainment media, and by the not too subtle suggestions of the advertising industry.
READING NOT ENOUGH M ARSHALL McLUHAN, who is something of the "grand theorist" o f the communications establishment, makes the point that in the past we thought of the literate man as the man who had read widely and wisely. The contemporary literate man must al;o be able to learn from many other
media of communication besides the printed word. Moreover, just as some people will enjoy reading, others will enjoy a different form of communicaiion. One person may prefer to read the day's news; another may prefer to hear it reported on the radio; and a third may prefer the informality, of the TV round-up that seems to bring a personal reporter in the living room. We have now developed media that appeal to different senses, and our conversation with the world demands that We use as many senses as possible.. The child before the television set is no more entranced than the one who reads or listens to a recording. The big question revolves around what happens after the watching, reading„ or listening. It is essential that parents recognise that the communications media are the most effective teaching aids that we presently have. Conversation and discussion, silent and introspective thought, and laboured expression of one's own ideas are also a part of the picture. The family affords the child, especially the very young child, the opportunity to phrase his questions and try his thoughts on other people. What he hears and sees or picks up casually may be turned over within him and emerge as common sense or as wisdom. Its value and importance is somewhat subject to the way it is iccepted or rejected.
RAISES QUESTIONS
media are a part of this. Despite the advantages that we experience, we must recognise some serious questions that are involved. When news is so rapid, can man's immediate response be objective or accurate? Does this not point out tht , need for silence and thoughtful reflee tion? When the various senses are train ed tO respond to different stimuli, they become tired or lazy? Can the use of drugs like LSD be linked to an expectation that the use of the senses must always be pleasurable? Since the "great conversation," or the interchange of human thought aided by effective media of communi cation and by increased leisure does the present teacher -student system adequately serve the educativt.process? Is computerised education ineffective or are we afraid to reay try it because it will cost so much? Finally, if all the technological dis coveries are as advantageous and effective as we suspect they might be, what will be expected of parents? I don't have all the answere, but I can offer some solution to the last one. The family will be less able to delegate education to outside agencies completely. Parents will have to work harder to broaden their own v ision, but they will also be more effective in helping their children t, relate the information that they gain from many s4iurces to life as it really is.
Mr'
TO SOME DEGREE our society is undergoing an "information explosion" and the communications

Women In FOCUS THE functions of an amateur dramatic society are many. For its members it can new material for extending knowledge reate c and provide many happy hours of pleasure. During the week I interviewed Miss Edna Hopkins, of Terrace Drive, Perth. Miss Hopkins has been connected with theatre in Perth f or many years. Edna was born in Perth and was educated at Victoria Square Convent. She is a stenographer in a Government Department. She has always worked in Perth, except for a year she spent in Canberra. We were reminiscing about Edna's overseas trip. She went with friends some years ago. "We toured England, France and Ireland," she said. "We went to Edinburgh for the Festival. It was exciting even just to be there." As could be expected, Edna was more than just interested in the theatre while she was t ouring. The famed Abbey Theatre in Ireland was the one place that fascinated her, and she told me that the play they attended there was the best acting she saw in any country. Some years ago a band of amateur actors got together and formed themselves into a group which they called "The Independent Players." They lasted for 15 years, and Edna belonged for the whole of the time. In those days she acted a lot, but now she mainly produces. "Some of our actors in the Independent she said, "went on to bigger and layers," P better things. Billy Austin went from here to England and back to the Eastern States of Australia." Enda belongs to the General Committee of the National Theatre. She is now secretary of the Therry Society, and has belonged to it for the last four years. "At the moment," said Edna, "we are making plans for the Easter play, which will be produced by Mr. Harrold Walsh. It will be staged at Rottnest Island over the Easter weekend. The production is being performed for the Legion of Mary." Last year was the first time the Legion

had brought a religious play to the island. It was such a success that everyone feels it should be continued. "The Therry Society," she said, "extends a warm welcome to anyone who would just like to come along and see what does go on behind a theatre production. One does not only have to be interested in acting — carpenters, painters, ladies to do sewing, and others are needed. The people fill an important place in the running of any amateur dramatic group." Edna went on to say that later in the year they are hoping to do some Shakespeare. She said that they were fortunate in being able to call on several first-class actors from other theatre groups, who are always willing to work with Therry. During the winter months Edna enjoys the football and is a great supporter of East Perth. PIP—

HIGHGATE GENERAL MEETING. — The general members of the Highgates parish met last Sunday night and discussed the necessity of providing some form of entertainment for the youth within the parish and their responsibility towards organising this entertainment. It was decided that if they were to be able to assist the leaders' groups in organising social activities in the parish, the general members should meet regularly. Father P. Hickey suggested that the general meeting should be the vehicle by which the leaders' groups carry out their work within the parish and as such it must be elastic in its format. The next general meeting will take the form of a folk evening to be held next month. All the youth of the parish are invited— watch this column for news of when and where it will be held.

FEBRUARY 21 . . . BARBARA KNIGHT, Floreat Park (8). LINDA EVANS, Mt. Claremont (11). VERONIQUE MENAGE, Claremont (8).
There are a half -dozen saints named Margaret but probably the most famous is Margaret of Cortona. She is one of those saints like the great Augustine and Mary Magdalene who in their youth led dissolute lives. Cortona is a medieval-looking city built on a steep hill above Lake Trasimeno in Italy. Shown here is the Piazza della Repubblica, its central square. To this city about the year 1269 came a desperate young woman and her son. The rich young man with whom she had been cohabiting had just been murdered and she had fled from his castle. Her father, at the instigence of her stepmother, had closed his door in her face. There was nobody to turn to in her home town so she had come to neighbouring Cortona. Two kind ladies she met in the street took the mother and son into their home and asked the Franciscans for help. The friars soon convinced her to abandon her immoral way of living and turn her thoughts to works of charity. She devoted her life thereafter to the care of the sick and poor and the reformation of sinners. For 29 years she lived a life of fasting, prayer and service to others. She attacked vice and converted sinners with extraordinary success. St. Margaret died in 1297 at Cortona and her tomb there is still venerated.
