ERHAPS illness would be easier to bear if we knew something of its nature, not only from a medical point of view, but also from the p sychological.
There are two kinds of illness: one of the body, which is sickness; the other of the mind, which is mental disharmony. We too often speak of illness as if it were organic and limited to the physical, whereas the whole picture embraces also the psychic and mental. One of the best descriptions of both kinds of illness has been given by Dr. Gotthard Booth who has described illness as a "breakdown in communication." Reducing this to the concrete, any serious form of sickness might be likened to a community in which telephone poles are broken during a blizzard or violent storm, rendering any encounter with neighbour impossible. A television set which has a tube burned out, in a certain sense, is sick because it prevents communication with drama, news, comedy and other spectacles of modern communications. A mother with a headache very often causes estrangement with her children: high fevers create an alienation from friends and relatives, while almost any kind of disease makes it difficult to read which is a very high form of communication with the minds of others. Those who suffer mentally also lack

this encounter with other members of society, sometimes turning against those who love them most. Conversation becomes difficult for it veers off at right angles to a subject and takes a direction foreign to what is normal. Because illness fractures relationship with others, every patient, to some extent, punishes himself. He cannot live without love, yet he feels himself incapable of manifesting it either in conversation or self-giving. It has been found experimentally that babies are kept alive by mothering affection, and that some children in orphanages who receive no affection whatsoever, died for want of it. A certain type of monkey was found to survive without the affection of the mother when it was possible to attach itself to a dummy which communicated warmth and also was capable of clinging to the young. If illness is a breakdown in communication, it follows that any patient who, because of limited power either to give or receive affection, is hindered in his recovery. Passing now not to those who are sick, but to those who visit the sick or care for them, there is also apt to be a further lack of *encounter. Because the sick do not react to affection and care, the healthy person is apt to draw into himself and refuse further sympathy. Love reaches its highest peak when we love even when we are unloved, for such is the nature of God's

Love. Most hearts show love only when they receive it., which penalises the sick who are impotent to respond reciprocally. What a bountiful increase in human relations there would be if those who were healthy made it a point to love those who cannot love in return. How happy the world would be if the beautiful were particularly kind to the ugly, or the rich were generous to the socially disinherited. To put love wherever we fail to find it, is the mark of a saint.
BREAKDOWN Looking then at both the patient and the visitor to the sick room, there is often a double breakdown of communication: the sick are unable to show it, and the well and physically sound ignore others because either they are a trouble or because they are not loved in return. A London hospital recently made an experiment in collective therapy in which every ambulatory pati'ent, every nurse and doctor were obliged to visit the non-ambulatory patients, never speaking of their own ills but spreading joy and showing care for others. TIES THAT BIND Creativity In Childhood FATHER I. NALHUGH LL the evidence seems to point today to the latent creativity of the pre-school child. Yet, when we speak of the creative child, we tend to think of the little intellectual type who just sits and waits to exhibit his superiority to sceptical adults. in reality, creativity should not be
with making things out of nothing, and we atttribute this power to God. We forget that man's share of creation is to discover and order the powers of nature, and to use them for the good of the whole human family. During the early years of childhood the child is continually discovering things, and part of his creativity is his determination to master what he discovers. The psychologists point out certain charaeterstics of the -creative child." I would contend that they are present to some degree in almost all children and that the creative child is such because of the freedom, understanding and encouragement given him by his parents. In speaking of the "creative child" then, let's assume that all children are creative. and adult reactions determine the
looked on as the gift of a few exceptionally privileged children, but rather as the natural endowment of every child. I would prefer to think of creativity as the greatest asset of the young child in the growing-up process. To explain my thesis, let me recall that we usually associate creation
degree of creativity. We will describe some of these earmarks of creativity, so that normal parents of normal children can help the child develop his creative potential. Perhaps one of the first marks of creativity is a certain non-conformism, or a dissatisfaction with what everyone else likes. For example, a child will play as easily with a piece of wood or a cardboard box as he will with an expensive toy. He is learning something about the wood or cardboard, and as he grows older, he creates, in his imagination at least, something entirely different from the wood or cardboard.
The creative child usually sets high goals for himself, goals that may seem impossible for him to attain. He also tends to associate with older children, and his goals can be a reflection of the older companion's actual attainment. When you think about it, second and third children often progress swiftly because they measure themselves against the firstborn. Because of his determination, a child may do a thing over and over until he masters it. All the while, he may well be on the razor's edge of discouragement and frustration. Stress and strain are not beyond his capacity, although over-em phasis on "success" may inhibit the child from exposing himself to even a little failure. So too many over-anxious adults who are more cautious

and fearful than the child hirnseil Perhaps the most important thitl to keep in mind is that creativity and high intelligence are not necessarily correlative. The creative child is characterised by a good sense of humour, a preference for self -initiated play and work, a willingness to a family setting that entake courages individualism and a combination differing traits such as sensitivity and independence. Obviously, parental interest is permissive and encouraging rather than strict and demanding, and the hon climate is not dedicated to the convent ional. The school process will offer the child ample opportunity to use hi.s intelligence and to gain all sorts of knowledge. The home gives him the incentive to learn, and hopefully, the curiosity to steer his thinking in new and interesting directions. In this way, the natural endowments are tapped to the full, and the in tial creativity continues throuchthe learning process. Next week we will offer some guidelines to parents as to their role in encouraging creativity.

II one must have the quality of being fully alive, possess the capacity to endure and flourish at the same time. Possessing this vitality for life is Mrs. Marie Kelly of Ewen Street, Scarborough. Marie was born in North Perth and was educated at the Sacred Heart Convent, Highgate. She played basketball at school and later in the Basketball Association Competition. She also represented her school in the InterSchool sports. She is a trained singer and pianist. "I used to belong to several different choirs," she said. "Before I was marriedI used to sing with the Monastery choir and the Sacred Heart Church, Highgate. I have also sung in our own parish church of the Holy Rosary." Marie married Mr. Lou Kelly, of Scarborough, and they now live on what would be one of the choicest blocks in Perth. The panoramic view is beautiful. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly have six children. Gavin and Brendan attend the C.B.C., Leedervine Jill attends the Siena Dominican High School, Andrea is a pupil of the Holy Rosary school, and Kieran and Aidan are still at home with mother. "My whole life seems to be centred on the children and school activities," she said. Marie is the secretary of the Holy Rosary Parents and Friends' Association. "I have been secretary for six years now," she said. "We run the usual fund-raising activities. Our parish is the same as other parishes. They are very responsive as far as appeals are concerned, but this year the committee is very eager to welcome more parents to attend the meetings. We would like to see some fresh ideas brought forward." For the past three years Marie has been training the Grade Six and Grade Seven for the school sports and basketball. Last year the Holy Rosary was placed second in the Dominican sports. Other mothers help with sewing classes as well as sport. "A few years ago," Marie said, "the Sisters asked the mothers of the schoolchildren if

X AVERIAN CLUB ACTIVITY
On 5zinday. February 5, the members of the Xaverian Club will attend the Irish Club Dance held at the Highgate parish hall, commencing at 8.30 p.m. The club is having a general meeting on Wednesday. February 15. to be held at a city hotel. A talk will also be given at this meeting by Father F. X. Brown, a Dominican. He is a very interesting speaker, so a good number is required to be present at this meeting. Also of course any general business can be discussed. A social dance will be held at the South Perth Community Centre Hall, Sandgate Street, South Perth, on Saturday, February 18. Everyone is asked to come and make it an enjoyable night. The girls to bring a plate of supper and the boys to bring drinks. Transport will be leaving the garage (No. 1 William Street, Perth) between 8 and 8.30 p.m. Tennis is held every Friday night at 8 p.m. stt Tennivale tennis courts, North Perth.

The Cathedral of Aachen, seen in the picture, is the most historic building in Germany. It was founded by Charlemagne in A.D. 796. St. Benedict would have seen the cathedral being built as he was a cup. bearer to Emperor Charlemagne at Aachen and to his father also. In those days Aachen was Aix, the capital of the mighty Carolingian E mpire. Benedict took part in military campaigns with the emperor but then made a vow to seek the kingdom of God with his whole heart. He entered a monastery in Burgundy. Later, when the monks wanted him to become the abbot, he quit the monastery and began the life of a hermit. However, it was not to be. Others of a like disposition soon gathered around the holy recluse and a community was established. In t ime St. Bernard became director and overseer of all monasteries in t he Carolingian Empire. Charlemagne's successor obliged Benedict to return to Aachen and t here he built a monastery. It was he who drew up the canons for t he reformation of monasteries at the council in Aachen in 817. He presided over all the abbots who attended it. His statutes, the Capitula o f Aachen, were annexed to the Rule of the Benedictines.
