on stilts, structural beams are exposed without any decor, and the flat barre,. ness of the crackerbox testifies that man sees in matter nothing but its dull self, In other centuries, when men saw Beauty behind the beautiful there was no limit to the passion to make stone glass and wood burst with splendour', Enthusiasm has an explosive Power which breaks the confines of the trite and the commonplace: "If these are silent, the very stones will cry out." Those were the words which Our Lord spoke to the Pharisees who bid the people cease shouting their love for Him. Actually the stones did not remain silent, but burst out into the splendour of Gothic Cathedrals. There are those who do not get angry at a chestnut tree because it limits one's existence. They see in it an image ot man rooted to his earth but aspiring to a Light above. The world then be. comes larger, richer and more interesting; full of constant and delightful surprises, and above all,, the vision of the Divine above gives accesses to sources of strength of which the chestnut tree pessimist is ignorant. Then glory coin.. es back into our hearts, for glory is the knowledge of something that is so love.. ly we cannot keep its secret. We must tell it to the world, shout with joy, and make stones burst into churches.

How different men's views can be — even on the level of nature. For example contrast a tree as it appeared to Sartre and to Joyce Kilmer. One of the heroes of the former, an Antoine Roquentin, looked out of his window at a chestnut tree. To him it was a logical monstrosity,, something that set limits to his own desires to be omnipotent. That tree was not necessary for Requentin's existence and he could not see why it should continue to exist if he did not want it to exist. This disgust, amounting almost to physical nausea at the sight of the tree, is rather typical of modern pessimism which draws absurdity from credible and ordinary things. On the other hand, Joyce Kilmer looked upon a tree whose leafy arms were out-stretched all day in prayer. and it inspired him to glory and worship as he wrote: "I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree . . . Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree." Some mortals begin with a doleful and tragic mood and then, later, pass to and understanding of what is truly beautiful. Such was the case of Augustine who, in his early years, could see beauty nowhere except in sex, and then turned to God with the cry: "Late, how late have I loved Thee Beauty ever old and ever new." One would expect that atheistic minds who can find no other hope than this world, would glorify it as did the Romanticists of the nineteenth century. Rather, we find that they cling to a senseless and hostile desert, leaving them no other destiny than to bury their heads in its sands to make their own little private oasis. On the other hand, those who know that the world does not explain itself anymore than Topsy "who just grew up" find meaning and beauty in nature, as did Augustine: "All is fabric most fair, things that are truly good will pass away when its course has been completed: they have their morning — and their evenAnd the great mystic, St. John of the

JUST A TREE? Cross, whom one would think would never refer to nature„ wrote: "My love is as the hills, The lonely valley clad with forest trees." One of the effects of the failure to see beauty in nature, and the tendency to see absurdity in a tree, has done much to expel a sense of glory from this world. The unutterable splendor has also been blackened by hearts so angry with themselves that they take vengeance on their neighbours. As Arthur C. McGill has expressed it: "In this age of anxiety and violence, glory is out of fashion, even in the churches." The poetic vision is lost, as nudity which is the ideal of a sensate world, creeps into sanctuaries and places of worship where there is nothing but bareness, barrenness and the commonplace. Architecture passed through a mood, and perhaps is still in it, where nudity is the rule: skyscrapers are put

TIES THA T BIND .. • the parent. The parent must avoid the extremes of autonomy, when there is great willingness to be separated from the child and not to be encumbered by his needs and wants; and control, wherein the parent seeks to intrude into the child's world and to foster dependency on the parent. Simultaneously, the parent may be torn between personal feelings of re sentment, selfishness and hostility and the overall feelings of love.

THE EARLY YEARS OF CHILDHOOD

1) FATHER T. WI-MU

deal T

HE CHILD shows a great of dependence on others, in the years of early infancy.

THE NEEDS OF THE INFANT ARE MANY AND MANIFEST, AND LARGELY OF A PHYSICAL NATURE. Parents are able to build feelings of trust and security at this time, largely by taking care of the child's physical needs, such as food, clothing, warmth. The child senses the love and attention given to him in the meeting of his needs, and responds with trust and confidence. An .example may help to illustrate the point. A mother may change a diaper quickly and efficiently, thereby alleviating the baby's discom fort. At the same time she may also talk and play with the baby., and embrace the child as she returns him to his crib. The diaper change is relatively important in communicating attitudes of love, interest and joy, and these latter are of greater importance to the child's emotional growth. By coiriparison. new fathers

are generally less expert in the whole manoeuvre, and the response is a crying baby.

TODDLER . . . infant moves into the todAS _the dler str.ge, he becomes more

aware of his own ability, and begins to show signs of independence. He wants to do things for himself, so he learns to crawl, to walk, to pry into things. He is experiencing physical growth, yet at times he will lapse back into the earlier dependencies. In the years prior to entering school, the child shows a great deal of spontaneity and learns fairly rap• idly. He is inquisitive and curious, and wants to attempt things by himself. At the same time he is also prone to frustration and can throw a temper tantrum or show other signs of discouragement. Through all of these periods of growth, the parent is a guide. The obstacles that a parent faces are usually not in the child so much as in

THE point behind all this is that the child is becoming aware of his unique personality, and he needs his parents and their reactions as reference points. In a world that demands great individualism and independence, parents must start early to lielp the child discover himself as a person. Parents in their great concern may tend to be over-anxious about the child's progress, and may also tend to set up unrealistic standards of achievement. The parents' task is to guide the child to self-attainment, to help him achieve what he himself is capable of. This calls for perception, for mutual interest, and for openness. Because a mother couldn't play the piano doesn't mean her daughter won't, and the athletic father may have a chess champion in his home. Psychologists are presenting more data all the time to show that the child is capable of great development during these early years, and that the I.Q. can change quite rapidly. Parents then must provide the child with the greatest number of opportunities and experiences for learning. and give him the emotional support

of their interest and encouragement. They must also remember the old adage that "Variety is the spice of life," and it may also be a great potential for development in the preschooler.

CHRISTIAN . . . is one further dimension te THERE this matter of early education

and development. The child in question is also a Christian. The sacrament of Baptism works the metaphysical change, but Christian formation is a part of the legacy of the family, and the child learns of his commitment by his experience in the f amily, Human dignity, the love of God. identification with Christ, must be lived in the family for the child to learn them. There is no handbook on "Christianity as a Way of Life," and there are no substitute teachers for parents. It is most essential that the child learn proper Christian attitudes in the home during these early years, because just as our complex technological society requires early awakening and development of human abilities, so also is our society in need of a leadership that will direct its progress along the lines of Christian values. The child must learn from earliest years to be a witness to his faith by his attitudes and convictions and to reflect the values that characterised his home life.

IRISH AIRMAIL NEWS

CARDINAL HEENAN IN RELAND I LOCHLINN CARDINAL HEENAN is no stranger to Ireland; his parents came from the Birr (County Offaly) area and his latest visit here has been for the obsequies of his brother, Very Rev. Francis Heenan, a retired Parish Priest of Brentwood (England). The attendance at the funeral at Clareen, Birr, included the Bishop - of Ossory, Most Rev. Dr. Birch. The late Father Heenan was educated at St. Edmund's College, Ware; Oscott College, Birmingham, and in France, and was ordained in 1924. He .took his Theology Degree in Lille University, studied at Cambridge, and later took an Honours Degree in Languages at London University. During the war, he was a chaplain in the British forces, was invalided, retired at an early age„ and spent his last years with his cousins at Howth, Ireland, Mr. and Mrs. V. Anderson. President de Valera was represented at the funeral.

have presentd Father Hipwell in Dublin, with a cheque, having "adopted" the mission. The presentation will go towards building a church; and those who made the gift have been helping Father Hipwell's isolated mission for the past three years. They were asked to name a new mission station opened by the Carmelites in Avila two years ago; they named it after St. Brendan. Father Hipi, vell, brother of Irish international rugby player "Mick Hipwell," is accompanied in his Rhodesian area by another Irishman, Rev. Peter Egan, O'Carm., a native of Dunmore, County Galway.

ambulance eventually got to the hospital. None of the political parties, Government or Opposition, has committed itself to the tactics being employed. The NFA, on the other hand, takes the view that alternative routes were open to traffic, that it advised emergency services in advance that they would be facilitated. and that the Government's failure to discuss the farmers' programme was the real cause. The new Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Neil Blaney from Donegal, has pointed out that the number of meetings between his Department and the NFA in the past two years has averaged one a fortnight, and that, before this demonstration, he had informed them that a further meeting would be arranged when his Departmer4 had reviewed the subject matter, this was towards the end of November, and Mr. Deasy, in early January„ again demanded the meeting. But Mr. Blaney has hinted that the Offences Against the State Act, under which an organisation or parts of its activities can be prohibited, can be used aganst the NFA. He accuses the NFA leadership of "moral blackmail." by using threats of national disruption if its demands are not met. It has also been hinted that there is a strugle for influence between the NFA and another large farm organisation led by Mr. John Feeley. These two organisations failed to reach an agreement for amalgamation, and while Mr. Feeley's is a dairy organisation and the NFA is concerned with all aspects of farming, the task of negotiating separately with them has its difficulties. The aim of both is to bring farm incomes up to industrial incomes, many farms are so small that it is difficult to make them economic units, and throughout Europe the survival of the very small farm as an independent unit in modern times is a grave economic problem for the national exchequers. Government aid to Irish agriculture and allied activities is over £ 50 millions each year, and the NFA takes the view that not enough of this sum does in fact find its way into the farm. The NFA wants the Government to implement a Small Farm Scheme, which would increase production, but the Government does not accept the NFA view that this would not involve further taxation in a country where the taxation potential, although like the farm grants it is a lot higher now that ever before, is limited.

Saint Andrew Corsini

Seen here is the altar and tomb of St. Andrew Corsini in the Carmelite church in Florence. His feast day was added to the calendar of the Western Church in 1737. Andrew, named for the great Apostle, was born in 1302 at Florence. In spite of the good example of his parents he preferred to spend his youthful years with bad companions in vice and prodigality. As a result of his mother's constant prayers Andrew eventually grew ashamed of the life he was leading and one day in the church of the Carmelite friars in Florence he vowed to enter the religious life. Shortly aftei ordination in 1328 he went to Paris to further his studies. Upon his return to Florence four years later he was chosen as prior of the Carmelite monastery there. He converted many hardened sinners by his preaching and by the exemplary life he led. Elected Bishop of Fiesole in 1349 he led an even more frugal life and increased his austerities. His tenderness and care for the poor was particularly noteworthy as was his ability in peace-making between factions. Taken ill while singing Mass on Christmas night, 1373, he died a fortnight later. He was immediately proclaimed a saint by the people but was not officially canonised for several centuries. by Arthur O'Leary NINIINININNP
