Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses . .

WHY SOME THINK GOD IS DEAD I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY SOME SAY -GOD IS DEAD." There are a number of "dead" people in the world. When the prodigal son left the father's house and sunk so low that he became a feeder of swine, and cleaved to a citizen of a foreign country, the father described his son as "dead." The deaf are "dead" to music and the sound of a rippling brook. Running is "dead" to the man with a paralysed leg. The flaming sunset and the multi-coloured autumn are "dead" to the blind. Shakespeare is "dead- to the uneducated and so is classical music. Prehistoric animals such as dinosaurs perished because they could not keep in tune with the environment. God, too, is "dead" either because of the way some think or because of the way some live. " Light exists outside of the window. When the blind is pulled down, the light does not cease to exist; it becomes immediately visible when the blind is lifted. I can imagine of the intelligentsia — the intelligentsia are those who are educated beyond their intelligence — going into a long dissertation on the meaning of the word -blind." He may argue that lin-

guistic analysis proves that "blind" does not refer to anything real. because at one time it signifies "sightless?" and at another a "covering." So much time could be spent on the problem of the mean-

ing of words and their verification. that one would never pull up the

blind. In some such way as light is "dead" to such a pilosopher, so God, after such linguistic gymnastics may also seem to be dead. A bank robber who has just opened a safe., detests nothing more than to have the flashlight of the police shining upon his misdeed. Scripture says that "they who do evil hate the light." The bank robber does not actually say the police are "dead," but he wishes they were dead because they reveal his bad conscience. No unfaithful husband ever wishes to hear a sermon on adul-

tery. As soon as St. Paul began talking to a corrupt judge about judgment, the judge stopped listening to Paul. The camp in which a man finds himself, that is. for or against the moral order, is determined by the initial weight he is willing to give to spiritual insights. It is very easy for us to boast about our love for truth, and how daily we knock at the door of truth that it may be opened, but many of us would run away if the door were opened; truth implies responsibility. It is much easier to say truth is dead than to change one's way of living in the face of that truth. Furthermore, the knowledge of truth is progressive, and only when we act upon the little that is given to us, is a further truth revealed. It is like climbing a series of successive hills, only when the first hill is mounted does the second appear, eyes on the horizon. Truth is

hidden when not sought after. The same is true of sanctity. We are as holy as we want to be holy. As Leon Bloy' put it: "One 'step beyond mediocrity and we are saved." God is not something that is acquired only at the end of a reasoning process. He is Someone to Whom we respond, as a child responds to a father's love. It is not we who prove God; it is God Who "proves us," in the sense that He searches out our ways: "Lord, Thou hast searched me out and known me." We commit the presumptuous sin of demanding that God should offer us proofs that His promises are true, and even demanding that He shall furnish us with a certificate of existence, while all the time He is the One Who requires truth in our most inward parts, and Who alone makes us understand true beauty. Because some souls rebel against responding to live, there is such

a thing as atheism. Scripture never puts it in the reason„ but in the heart. In modern language this would mean that the causes are psychological, rather than intellectual. What atheism is in the order of thought, that frigidity and impotence are in the order of sex. Modern science claims that much frigidity and impotence is in the psychological and not in the physical or real order. The frigid and the impotent cannot respond normally to human love. To them, sex is dead. Others refuse to respond to Divine Love, and to them God is dead.

TIES THAT BIND THE DESTINY OF THE CHILD by FATHER T. McHUGH

W

HEN a child is born, he comes into time with a future and a destiny. His future is c onditioned to a great degree on his parents and his family. AS TIME goes by and the child becomes more aware of his temperament, ability, talents and limitations. he is able to affect that future. Destiny is something different from future, and destiny involves more of promise than of reality. Destiny is the beacon that lights the way of future development. The "future" for every man is at best uncertain; his destiny is more defined but less measureable in terms of accomplishment. Finally, future belongs to the here and now, and destiny is more related to eternity. As a person pursues his destiny, he moves through time. His past, and indeed the history of mankind,

provides him with some awareness of his ability to grow. The future, pursued in the light of hope, presents a variety of paths along which he travels. Every moment of conscious realisation is the present, and it provides the link between past and future. SHAPING HIS DESTINY MYSTERIOUS as time is, it is not a vacuum. Man passes through time in contact with persons and things, constantly defining himself in relation to them. The child is born of persons who help him realise his existence. Even though our age is one of constant change, parents can and must touch the child with a realisation of past, present and future. Parents, along with God, give life and help the child to shape his destiny. Parents must begin then by recognising that they are two separate and different persons. They are the products of different pasts, and they

are committed, by marriage, to determining the future so as to accomplish a mutual destiny. Each child that they bring into the world is another person, and is entitled to be different from either or both of them. As adults, living in the marital community, they have learned to adjust to one anther. This doesn't mean surrender or annihilation, and their parenthood involves the same sort of adjustment to each of their children. The first and basic thing that helps spouses to adjust to each other is human love. They share love with each other, they don't just give it. Their love is the basis of their attraction to each other, but it doesn't do away with the differences. Their love for each other leads them into the venture of parenthood, and this same quality — love — is their basic assurance that they will be good parents. YEARNING FOR LOVE. LOVE IS a human quality, and it must be felt in a human way. Man has developed innumerable ways of expressing love. The child needs to feel the love of both parents, even though it may be expressed differently by each. The love of a mother is unearned, it nurtures and almost envelopes the child. Picture a woman cuddling a child and you have a graphic image of mother love. The father's love is earned, measured, and has a certain disciplinary character to it. The child is the product of the love of both parents, and grows normally from their

mutual love through different manifestations of that love. Needless to say, the infant is more susceptible to the maternal influence, and the father's contribution is more indirect in that he provides security in loving his wife. Later on, paternal love is more keenly realised by the child, and gives order and security to the child's life. It also provides the child wtih something against which he can measure his own capacity to love. At any rate, the child needs to feel that his parents love him, that they want him, that he matters very much to them. By their actions he comes to know that they care about what happens to him. Incidentally, this matter of "caring" is a perduring quality of the love between parents and children, and is of great importance even after children grow to adulthood. Parents must realise that in properly loving their children they not only fulfill an obligation and respond to a certain cultural expectatoin, but they continue the close co-operative relationship with God the Father. God doesn't merely create, He calls us into being and calls us to Himself. Parents, in loving their children, reflect in a human way the love of God, and surrounding their children with the security of a loving family, they help the child to perceive and accomplish his destiny.

Honoratus was born in Roman Gaul as Prance was then known. At an early age he renounced idolatry and showed contempt for the things of this world. Against the wishes of his father he sought the life of a religious hermit first in Greece and then in the mountains above Frejus in southern Gaul. Towards the close of the 4th Century he moved to the nearby Lerins Islands in search of greater solitude. It is recorded that he found the particular island he had chosen to settle on was infested by serpents. He prayed to God that they be banished. His prayers were answered. One is reminded by this of another island and another saint. Indeed St. Patrick as a youth was a disciple of Honoratus as were many other like-minded young men. For the fame of Honoratus' sanctity and learning soon spread and his hermitage became the nucleus of the renowned Monastery of Lerins which, except for a period last century, has been in existence ever since St. Honoratus founded it. The picture shows its archway entrance. St. Honoratus was compelled to accept the bishopric of Arles in A.D. 426 but died three years later worn out by his labours. The relics of the saint were transferred to his beloved island now called St. Honorat. by Arthur O'Leary
