Hearts are less animated over a discussion of how they will spend eternity, than how they will pass the time on a wet day. The "one-day neurosis" will then become a "weekend neurosis." The more we live in time, the less realisation we have of it; we are like children that can have a temporal horizon and experience the passing of time, without having any idea of the meaning of time. There are two kinds of time.— clock time and ct;sis time. The Creeks called the first ''Clironos" and the second "Kairos." "Clock time" is progressive, successive, marking anniversaries, holidays,

hours, the past, the present, and the future. It is like a motion picture reel which all.eady c,intains the whole story of life with its laughter and tears; but the understanding of that story is not compLte until successively thrown upon the screen of time, When time goes slowly, it is boring; when it goes too quickly, we are happy. It sometimes identifies itself with pleasure—"we are having a good time." but it also is linked with misfortune, which is called a "bad time." There is also what Scripture calls the "fullness of time" when the ages are completed, or what happens after that which John Donne expressed as "the world's last night." is also another BUTtimethere which may be called

"crisis time." It may be brief and rapid, long and solemn. The crisis for a young person is school, when he moulds his future, when he begins to learn music, languages and the sciences. Unlike clock time, crisis time passes, and with it. opportunities. Harvest time is a crisis time for a farmer. If he does not reap his oats, he may lose his crop—"One must make hay while the sun shines." There is a crisis

TIME t ime for the body, when it develops good physical habits. Games that one learns a t ten cannot be learned at sixty. The mind that is not trained to reading when it is young, penalises and condemns itself to vacuity in old age. Even finances have their crisis time—"If only then I had invested in the stock market." This "Kairos," or crisis time, is not temporal, but rather critical; not something progressive, but something involving responsibility; not just sequence, but something decisive.. It is what might be called "the right time," as against the wrong time as one strikes when the iron is hot and one does not laugh at a funeral. In the life of nations as well as individuals, there comes a moment of decision, which, if passed, means a loss of greatness—"If you had known the time of your visitation, but now it is hidden from your eyes." Those who limit time to the hourglass and succession are swept along by it, as they might be in a flood or avalanche. Once it is viewed as self-sufficient and without anchorage in eternity, it becomes a prison, a death-dealing thing; man becomes a being marked for death.

This crisis moment very often comes after surfeit, or an excess. It is hidden in emptiness and loneliness. Hidden in this nausea and self-disgust is a summons from outside of time and outside ourselves. In such crisis, if properly given response, one passes from unbelief to faith. The knock at the broken heart touches it, heals it and calls upon it to counteract its base inclinations and to centre itself in the timeless which is the condition of all happiness and peace. Unbelief is clock time because repetition, by itself, is meaningless. Man disintegrates in the inexorable rhythm of passing days. "Kairos" time is for penance, conversion. Being an instant of encounter with a Stranger from without, man loses himself to save himself; he gathers up all of his wretched past and lays it in the hands of the Lord. The meaning of time immediately changes. The chains of the past are broken and one begins to share a life and a truth and love that are outside of time. There is always a "too-late" in clock time, but there is never, so long as life endures, a -too-late" for decision time.

ITH Christmas right on us, it seemed that the tempo of preparation increased to fever pitch.

EVERYTHING is alive with holiday decoration and festive light, the radio haunted us with the proper mood music, and we were given incessant reminders of the shopping days that r emain. In a funny way, the world was ready for Christmas, and we often deluded ourselves into thinkine that we were ready, too. Most of the gifts bought and wrapped, the exchange of Christmas carck brings the memory of old friends, and our sense of readiness is conditioned by the pressure of fast-moving time.

Despite all these external signs of readiness, we run the great risk of missing the whole point. With the build-up of anxiety and tension, we find tempers growing short, and little squabbles almost inevitably develop. What ought to be a time of happiness too often becomes a time of family strife, and the whole climate of Christmas joy is endangered by our selfishness and lack of temperance.

The prophet who prepared the way for the Redeemer in 1966 is the paradox of modern living. As secular man protests loudly his competence to manage the affairs of the world, he finds himself involved in hatred, distrust and war. But we take time out, even from war, at Christmas. We get close to understanding that peace comes through Christ, through men living as Christians, then we get past the feast day and resume the war. We tune off the sounds of the market place, the radio and TV, and sort of collapse in the silence of fatigue. But we awaken to new activity, to the restlessnes of human affairs, and wonder why we didn't salvage a little more of the quiet, and enjoy a little more of the peace. We wind ourselves up to be happy. and we trip over our own activity. As Christmas is here, so is the Christ of Christmas. His way is prepared by our charity in dealing with each other, His presence is felt in our humble acceptance of the demands of being Christian. We must stir the motives of justice and truth, we must accept the challenge of charity, and in a somewhat silent confrontation of ourselves, we must prepare the way for His coming and His gifts of peace and joy.

IT may be this very world in which we live; the crazy pace of our constant activity: the restlessness that prevents us from listening and waiting patiently.

The Advent liturgy has replayed the drama of the waiting centuries before the first Christmas. The dramatic outcry of the prophets has provided an effective reminder of the increasing expectations of the world for its Redeemer. In all our little things, Christmas customs, cards, music, the reminders remain. Still, we forget. Maybe we need a prophet to shake us up a little. Someone like Isaias or John the Baptist to disturb our complacency, to jog our self-satisfaction, to unsettle our efficiency. But I must temper my idealism at this point, because the age of the prophets is over, and we cannot rely on any dramatic and miraculous happening to make us sensitive to the mystery of Christmas. Still, there must be something that can lend meaning to our celebration. There must be something to provide a note of realism to our re-enactment of the Incarnation.

Mrs. Eve Hawkins was born in South Australia, and was educated at the Cabra Convent in Adelaide. "I came over to Western Australia," she said, "to be a bridesmaid to a close friend. I asked my parents if I could stay for six months, and it was during that time that I met an airman, Mr. Stan Hawkins, from Northam. He was to become my husband, and of course I have been here ever since." It was during the war when they were married, and Mrs. Hawkins contributed to the war effort by working in the Department of Aircraft Production. "I attended an instruction course in hydraulic engineering at the Technical College. I worked for three years and really did enjoy it." Mrs. and Mrs. Hawkins have four children, three boys and one girl. The boys all attended Aquinas College and the girl attended Brigidine College, Floreat Park. A lot of Mrs. Hawkins' time has been taken up by serving on committees of the school to which her children belong. She is the retiring secretary of the Aquinas Ladies' Auxiliary. Her youngest boy, Geoffrey, has just left Aquinas, and this is the reason that Mrs. Hawkins is retiring. "I really feel," she said., "that the position should be filled by one of the mothers who still has children attending the school." Geoffrey has rowed for the last three years in the first "eight" Head of the River. This year he won the John Scott Memorial Trophy for best rower at Aquinas College. Mrs. Hawkins has one child still at school, Jennifer, who sat for her Junior this year. Mrs. Hawkins was also treasurer for the Brigidine Parents and Friends' Association for six years and retired two years ago. She is very interested in the Voluntary

This is really a marvellous organisation, but not enough people know of its existence." Through the hard work of the voluntary drivers, and generous donations, the group now owns a small ambulance unit, but most drivers own their own cars. Mrs. Hawkins has been on the committee for 12 years. She is a person who loves the outdoor type of life, and is a great believer in sport. Her great love is golf and she tries to play twice a week. She is the president of the golf club to which she belongs.

This English saint was born and raised in London. After a brilliant career which included embassies to Rome and elsewhere on the Continent he was made Chancellor of England by King Henry 11. When Theobald the Archbishcp of C anterbury died in 1161 the King resolved to have his friend raised to the dignity. Thomas pointed out, "Should God permit me to be Archbishop of Canterbury 1 shall soon lose Your Majesty's favour. For several things you do in prejudice to the rights of the Church make me fear you would require of me what I could not agree to." However, the Papal Legate overruled his scruples. For his remaining eight years Archbishop Becket sought to defend Church and clergy from the machinations of the King. In Canterbury Cathedral on 29 Dec., 1870, Thomas was attacked by four of the King's knights. After the first wound St. Thomas cried, "Into Thy hands, 0 Lord, I commend my spirit!" Another blow and he murmured, "For the name of Jesus and in defence of the Church I am willing to die." His scalp was severed and his brains scattered by swordpoint. Christendom was shocked.
