EDITORIAL Press Wrong About Jesuits

HE Jesuit Fathers who were present for the special Mass which the Holy Father celebrated for them at the close of their 31st General Congregation, were pleased and flattered with the honour of such an occasion and the words which the Pope addressed to them. This unfortunately was not the case of the thousands of other Jesuits throughout the English-speaking world. They were hit with words such as "Jesuits rebuked," -spiritual slackness," "branded as sinister," - .reproached" and other such terms. Small wonder that they felt first mystified and then hurt. Again. when the text of the address has been released through Church channels, there is evidence of the slanted Flory by a news service and the sensationseeking headline without any care for truth or the real story. Tee emphasis has been placed on something taken completely out of its context, made into the sensational that can do nothing but harm. In this case particularly to the credibility by responsible people of other news items from the same source. The emphasis which the Holy Father conveyed in his message to the Fathers of the Society of Jesus can be adequately summed 7_ip in this quote from his speech: "If you continue to be what you were, you will not lack our esteem and trust. And you will have the esteem and trust of the People of God."

The text makes no judgment on the objective moral claim of the conscientious objector. It neither accepts nor rejects the arguments in support of such a position. It simply appeals in the name of equity for humane treatment under the law of those who experience difficulties of conscience with respect :o bearing arms.

IN the United States, the first half-hour casualties would be between 80 million and 120 million deaths. No nation wishes to commIt suicide. There is, however, a limit to the deterrent value of nuclear warfare. Every city has education in fire prevention and., in addition to that, has a fire department. No one of the home owners wishes to set fire to his home; at the same time every fire department hopes that no fire will ever break out. But, knowing human nature as it is, there always remains the possibility of a fire. Furthermore, there are such persons as arsonists who delight in setting fires. They are rare in a population, but they are of sufficient number to cause alarm. If our society can produce madmen in a family who, with guns„ will wipe out whole families or groups for no apparent reason whatever, what is there to prevent a madman with nuclear weapons from wiping out civilisation? The humanity which a few decades ago could produce a Hitler and a Stalin,

There is always the possibility of international arsonists who would fulfil, as one of the characters in Dostoievski said, that rapid transition from "the death of God to the annihilation of men."

killed, 84 per cent civilian and 16 per cent soldiers. This latter figure indicates that the soldier in modern warfare has a better chance of survival than the civilian. This brings up the question as to whether or not there is any chance of survival. Despite these limitations and dangers, men must work together for the preservation of peace, and this can be done only by a recognition to our common humanity. Stalin has given a negative proof of the need of love binding men together. His problem was how to unite men in a classless society in which everyone was the comrade of another. Negatively, he did this by keeping out Western ideas, persecuting religion, and by living up to a name that was given him in school when one day a boy in back of him wrote on his back the word "steel," or in Russian "Stalin," a word that became prophetic. Robert Capon, the Episcopal priest, speaks at length of the

Popenoe, specialist in family life education., emphasises the importance of ritual for the family. "The establishment and management of patterns of family ritual," says Dr. Popenoe, "is one of the significant keys to successful marriage and family living." He urges parents to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, religious feasts: he calls attention to the importance of picnics, trips and visits, and even the banter at mealtimes. Through these things, the children come to have a sense that "our family does this," and this feeling helps the youngsters to achieve a sense of idenity and a realisation of community. One of the great purposes of the

liturgy of the family. HE doesn't use liturgy in its restricted meaning of approved public worship, but more familarly meaning "that which the family does."

On Thanksgiving Day in America the family does certain things, like eating turkey. At Easter the family visits Aunt Martha; on Saturday evenings there's bound to be a game of Scrabble; occasionally the small fry may give. a variety show. Every family has its own customs or rituals, and many of these reflect t he family's worship of God. The family may go to church together; it

FI WE bring this up ADVENT because as we are in the time of Advent., we are surrounded by the reminders of the approaching Christmas feast. The reminders may be commercial, somewhat somewhat customary or trite, and even somewhat meaningless. In her liturgy, though, the Church recalls the communitarian longing of the Jewish people for the Messiahs., the evolutionary preparedness of the world that culminated in this fullness of time. At the apex of a centurieslong Advent, the Saviour came. Every act of our lives, as persons living in society, has deep meaning. Certain forms of expression, symbols.. r:tuals, communicate the deeper meaning of our actions. So too, the rituals of the family manifest the common understanding and reflect the unity of the family members.

The Church reminds us that the coming of Christ is not just a "once upon a time," but a climacteric event pervading all human history. In using such religious customs as the Advent Wreath, the family celebrates its own liturgy. In some special instances., Bishops are allowing priests to celebrate Mass in the homes of the faithful. These little experiences of worship in the family serve to prepare the way for a better appreciation of these special instances, and at the same time, they become another one of the little ties that bind the family together in love, in worship and in unity.

FOCUS * By EDITH McNAMARA ANY movement that is without the enthusiasm of youth will not live—it will fail to expand and will not produce the results it should. Mrs. Rita Green, of Third Avenue, Mt. Lawley, is a far-seeing person, and more or less said these words to me when I interviewed her at her home this week. She was born at Boulder and was six years of age when her parents moved to Perth, where she attended the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions at Maylands and Highgate. She married Mr. W. L. Green, of Mt. Lawley, and they have lived in this suburb for 37 years. They have two married children. "We now have seven grandchildren," she said., -six girls and one boy." Mrs. Green's husband is the Principal Architect of the Public Works Department, and Mrs. Green 'sometimes accompanies her husband at the opening of certain projects. "We attended the opening of the Ord River Dam," she said. 'It really was a wonderful sight. The North is so vast, and is very important to the development of Australia." In October she attended the opening of three schools in one day at Esperance. "Esperance," said Mrs. Green, "is one town that is really alive. The Americans are playing a vital part in land development. Mrs. Green likes to travel. In 1937 she went for a holiday to the United States of America and toured all the States by Greyhound Bus. She belongs to the Catholic Women's League, the Women's Service Guild, and is the International Secretary of the West Australian branch of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations. Mrs. Green told me she could talk for many hours about the W.U.C.W.O., but she felt at this stage it was more important to stress the urgent need for new members in the Catholic Women's League. So along with his preaching, he taught his people how to grow wheat tomatoes and corn in their valley. His biggest problem was a highly intoxicating drink which the people brewed from a shrub. So he taught them instead to make cloth out of the shrub and eventually built trade schools for dressmaking, knitting and carpentry. In thirty years his downtrodden people had become a vigorous and self-reliant community with neat homes, plumbing, electricity and in the midst of the village a beautiful church. MAYBE what we need in Latin America are not just American priests who will take on a country parish, but rather a team of tech-

nicians—hygienists, doctors, nurses, electricians, engineers and a priest. Send them into the slums, first to give the people bread for their stomachs, then to talk about the Bread of Life. Our missions must not be apart from the total situation of the people whom we serve. If the Communists can combine all liberal groups. leftists movements, off-beat beatniks into a revolutionary movement against society and decency, why cannot the Church mould together her 1.200 religious communities and .sepa r ate missionary organisations into a single unit to carry on the revolution of Christ in the world? Why does each missionary society have its own seminary? Why do we

It is for this reason that the Holy Father said: "It should be helped primarily and that it occupies first place among the mission societies of the Church." HE sleeve of this twodisc set makes a great to-do about the seven concerti being the only complete set of this opus number. There have been two or three recordings of the Opus 3, all confined to six concerti as originally published. None of these t ecordings has appeared on the local market, to my knowledge, but they are all on a single disc. so this set doesn't represent such startling value as it first appears. The seventh concerto comes from a radical rewrite by Handel of No. 4 and it is interesting to compare the two. The Teleman concerto is bright entertainment equal to Handel—it was probably even more esteemed at the time, but whether it and the seventh Handel concerto is worth a second disc is a moot point. The performances are sprightly enough and the recording is good. The orchestra is the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under Muller-Eruhl, not a well-known ensemble or conductor, but there is nothing wrong with their playing.

BUNBURY FRIENDSHIP WEEK.—On Saturday, November 26, 70 young people from Perth left for Bunbury to attend the Y.C.W. annual ball and social weekend in that town. A large crowd of 350 Y.C.W.'s saw Bishop L. J. Goody officially declare the ball open to what can only be described as a wonderful evening of entertainment. A Y.C.W. Mass was offered at 10 a.m. at the cathedral with the Diocesan Chaplain, Father Dwyer, speaking on Catholic marriage. In the afternoon a convoy of cars left for Spring Hill for a barbecue lunch at a beautiful old colonial farm. After lunch, the crowd moved on to Binninup Beach, near Harvey, for recreation and swimming. The Perth young people are grateful to their Bunbury Y.C.W.'s and hosts for such a wonderful weekend. BRANCH NOTES. — The Highgate Y.C.W. girls would like to wish Noreen Donnelly a speedy recovery and hope she will soon be back at work. The new team has progressed very well over the last few months and is nearing the final stages of the preliminary programme. In this time the girls have enjoyed two successful events—the "progressive" dinner and a barbecue. The Redcliffe girls are planning a general meeting to find out exactly what the youth of the parish would like in the way of socials. Details of this meeting will be given latec. The barbecue for international funds was a success and the branch would like to thank all those people who supported the evening. SING-OUT WEST . . . Big Beat . . . Folk Sound . . . Big Idea. A cast of over fifty. including youth from seven countries, will give a Christmas Bonanza performance of "Sing-Out West" at the Subiaco City Hall on Thursday. December 8, at 8 p.m. "Sing-Outs" from C.B.C., Fremantle, and St. Joseph's Convent, Fremantle., have been invited to join the show following their own lively

performance by seniors at their recent school prize night, when a great show was enjoyed by all who attended. Don't miss this terrific night, which is in keeping with those given by thousands of young people in many countries. There is plenty of colour and contrast, with original songs to the beat of modern guitars. Groups of Poles and Asians in national dress will sing and Greek girls will dance. Tickets are available from the Terract, News agency and at the door (students halfprice).
