NEED TO KNOW NATURE Zambia's Bishop Says Of CHURCH

Thanks

R

EFERRING TO THE CHURCH AS THE "SACRAMENT" OR SACRED SIGN OF CHRIST'S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD, ROPE PAUL VI LAMENTED THE FACT THAT "SO MANY PEOPLE REGARD THE CHURCH AS AN OBSTACLE, ALMOST AN IMPEDIMENT, NOT TO SAY AN OUTRIGHT DEFORMATION OF CHRIST." How is it possible, he asked at his weekly general audience for the Church not to "demonstrate its sacramental power, its beauty „its prerogative of the presence of Christ? The answer to this would be a long one. Even the Lord Himself was not recognisesd by everyone. "But we can be content with making two points: . "First, the Church appears obscure and not unlike merely human institutions to someone who looks from the outside, to someone who does not know it or does not wish to recognise the Church's transcendent secret. "Second, the Church at some times and in seine of its aspects is not beautiful, is not a splendid thing, does not make itself significant and audible because its sons are not exemplary and do not live as true Christians.

RESPONSIBILITY

Bishop Clement of Zambia with Mission Director Father W. Foley.

"pLEASE convey to all the other girls and boys whom I cannot see personally my deep appreciation and thanks for their help in training students for the priesthood in Zambia and Malawi." This was the wish expressed by Bishop Clement Chabukasansha of Kasama, Zambia, in talking last week to students from Trinity College and Our Lady's College during a brief stop-over of 48 hours in Perth. The White Fathers had brought the Church to Zambia (Northern Rhodesia) only 60 years ago and had immediate success. He himself was baptised in 1929 at the ge of 12 years and later hood studied for the priest-

HE PURITANS INTRODUCED THRIFT INTO THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE.

THE PURITAN WAY was to save first, then enjoy. THE MODERN WAY is to go to Europe now, pay later. COLONIAL AMERICANS decreased their wants in order to increase their security. CONTEMPORARY AMERICANS increase their wants in the hope that the State may insure their security. ADVERTISING makes consumers believe that luxuries are necessities; that unless men use a synthetic deodorant to kill body odour, they will suffer social ostracism. In response to the stimulation for new goods there comes a second

step which is necessary, namely„ the financing of those unnecessary needs. The result is a staggering debt. In five years in the United States the consumer's debt rose 53 per cent. John Galbraith, in his "Affluent Society.," states that: "In 1955 one family in four of those with incomes between $3,000 and $4,000 bought an automobile and 69 per cent of those did so on credit, About 30 per cent of those who bought cars on credit in 1955 had bought their previous car the same way and still had debt outstanding on that vehicle." Reading this book makes one think of the words of Isaiah: "What, always spending, and no bread to eat, always toiling, and never a full belly." The point is that there seems to be no place for values except the material. Perhaps, a more correct way to put it would be that values have disappeared and sensations have taken their place. Sensations change from day to day. A new automobile, a new style of dress changes the person's mood, but a sense_

TRUE VALUE of values remains the same., namely, nothing matters except matter. When a standard is wholly material, there is no such thing as anyone ever having enough. When Our Blessed Lord distributed the loaves and fishes to the 5,000 in the desert, the Gospel says that everyone had his fill. But if he had distributed automobiles or savings bonds or stocks or television sets, there is not one of the

THERE seems to be stages in this quest for worldly satisfactions—one is to become very rich. It is very difficult to set a limit to what is considered being rich. Though the desires of the mind be granted, this does not preclude the access of new desires to the mind. So a man might strive to extinguish the lamp by putting oil into it, but this makes it burn more. When, however, one accumulates so much wealth that society marks one as extremely wealthy, there then comes a zthange in want. Very often in the United States the desire for wealth once fairly satisfied becomes a desire for political power. The infinite is shifted from money to authority. One no longer wants money to buy things; one wants money to control persons. Happiness consists not in the abundance of things that one possesses, but in the possession of one's soul. "Lay not up treasures on earth."

TIES THAT BIND. .. SEX EDUCATION Part 11 14 FATHER T. VicHUGH

/

AST week in this column we mode some general observations

about sex education. WE recognised the need for church. school and community to complement the work of the home. Implicitly we also acknowledged that some parents cannot or will not give the proper education for sexualitiy to their children, and in these cases ignorance and error c an be the preludes to tragedy. Yet, in admittting the supportive role that other agencies can play. especially the school, it is necessary to have an overall plan to follow. There are many today who would view sex education merely as an explanation of biology,. psysi()logy, or anatomy. Others would see it as an opportunity to inform teenagers of the dangers of social

diseases. Lately, emphasis has been placed on sex education as an introduction to family planning.

INTEGRAL PROGRAMME of these are inadequate ALLapproaches to an integral pro-

gramme of sex education. First of all they begin with a confined view of the individual person, and with a limited perception of what human sexuality is. What we are dealing with is the human person —male or female—and we are attempting to give this person a complete understanding of what it means to be a man or a woman. Granted the need for information about physical facts, there is also needed an understanding of the emotions, the temperament, the cycles of growth that boys and girls experience. Necessary also is an understanding of the interaction between boys

and girls, between men and women. For instance, the worst thing that can happen to a little boys is for some female to kiss him. At age 17 and onwards, given certain circumstances, his negative reaction would not be so strong.

IN CONTEXT THE second problem that we find among many of the advocates of a limited sex education programme is that of isolating this training from all other education. Sex education logically leads to education for marriage, even in its remotest phase. Without this progression the link between sex education and family planning can quickly become an incentive for promiscuity. Two persons, aware of their own sexuality and of their great capacity to love, move from attraction and infatuation to life-long commitment. In marriage their love finds many expressions and much creativity. In parenthood they manifest a deepening sense of responsibility to each other, to their children„ to the family of man. Family planning is only properly understood in the context of family life and responsible parenthood. Linking sex education to family planning without an intensive investigation of marriage leads to confusion, chaos and deep personal tragedy. As we see it, then, education in sexualitiy begins early in life, carries through the early school years

She saw no American prisoners, she said.

and becomes a smaller part of the education for marriage that should command the attention of the years in advanced education.

NATURAL GROWTH IT is worth remembering that a " young person develops a capacity to love as he grows and matures, and his sexual maturation should keep pace with his opening of himself to others and his willingness to experience his ability to love. Let it be said again, then, that sexuality is only one aspect of humanness, an aspect that develops within a greater spectrum of feelings, emotions and convictions. The convictions or values are sown early by the parents, and are complemented by the others, It is from a loving family life that the individual becomes aware of himself and his relation to others. The words of Vatican II summarise this for us: "Parents should regard as their proper mission the task of transmitting human life and educating those to whom it has been transmitted. They should realise that they are thereby cooperators with the love of God the Creator, and are, so to speak, the interpreters of that love.-

THE

MISSION NOTES By REVEREND FATHER W. J. FOLEY T E

ECUMENICAL AIRLINE

LTMATT stands for United Missionary Air Training and Transport. It is an air service for missionaries of all faiths at the far-flung outposts scattered over East Africa. UMATT was conceived by Brother Mike S timac, a science teacher in the Kenya high school, who dreamed of a plane that would link the missions together. The inspiration for UMATT c ame from Sister M. Michael Therese, M.M.M., the flying nun who had already proved the impossible things could be done with a frail little aeroplane in the famine-stricken Turkana Desert. Without the aeroplane, many medical outposts would have to close down. A larger plane would enable an increase in the amount of the number of urgent calls for help that could be answered. Reports state that two out of three calls for help must cruelly go unanswered now because they are unable to handle any more. UMATT must expand its African At least four more operations. aeroplanes are needed now—it is hoped they will be operating by the end of 1966. One for the desert regions in the north, one for the training programme which is under way and two for Tanzania and Malawi areas in the south. Beyond that, the day is not far distant when a twin-engined aircraft will be needed. Because of these planes. many lives are saved. In transporting missionaries to their distant out-

posts, these planes reduce weeks and months of tortuous land travel to hours and reach places inaccessible except by light plane. The great need and the great urgency of this cannot be overstressed. FIND THE STRIP„ OR ELSE:— Night landings at unlighted strips are made possible by positioning jeeps or cars on the ground so that their headlights mark the location of the runway and wind direction. The biggest problem is navigation. As Brother Michael commented in a recent letter: "Maps are a headache. They are incomplete in many ways and often one goes 150 miles between possible landmarks. You do a lot of intense staring at the horizon and must religiously watch the compass. One of the most used instruments is the clock. When you run out of E.T.A. (estimated time of arrival), you don't keep flying five more minutes out here. Find the strip or head for known ground." ADDITIONAL USES FOR UMATT An irrigation specialist was flown over a 180-mile stretch of dry river bed spotting waterhole and irrigation scheme locations. The twohour flight could not have been replaced by even a month of ground tracking. A five-man survey team visited the desert to obtain information for economic, educational and mission development. Their ten and a half flying hours were equal to a month's safari by land.

GOD LOVE YOU! • By BISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN KNOW two priests who have caught the spirit of our times. One, a pastor, takes no meals in his rectory but dines in nearby r estaurants. Here he meets few of his parishioners, but comes into contact with those who are empty of faith, but full of problems. They visit him at table, unburden their hearts and have their first encounter with a shepherd among lost sheep. The other priest goes to the railway station every night where he meets the lonely, the lost, the homeless and those who are just "waiting." Some are so through their own fault, others through "someone else's fault," and still others through the harsh vicissitudes of life. There he brings the Church to the un-churched; he has become the ambassador of Christ to these souls.

that for them the Gospel is not the "honey" but the "salt of the earth." MAY you laity who are saintly and you priests who are Christlike help the rest of us mortals to lift our Church from administration to shepherding! May you point the way by your sacrifices the imitating of the missionaries so that we may see that God is dwelling with men for their saving—where they work, where they grope, where they fall! The Church is not a Sunday-gathering of faithful, but a barracks where the Commanderin-Chief sends us but to do the Lord's saving work. May we not be blind to the Presence of God in the world of hunger and want. And may we not be blind either to the presence of the Tempter in the Church—tempting us to take short cuts away from the Cross.

THIS is Mission in a non-Mission land, the techniques of Africa and Asia put into use on Broadway and IF we can keep the missionary Main Street. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED ESTABLISHING

A Wine Cellar In Your Home? A WINE CELLAR? Visions perhaps enter your mind's eye of bottles covered with cobwebs and dust, the slow, rhythmic dripping of water on moss-covered floor paving, very little light and a bone-chilling atmosphere.

The cellar of Mr. Harry Stone is built directly under the main living area of his home in Perth. It is a combination of steel storage bins surmounted by wooden boxes packed together. Also featured are various antique bottles, maps of wine countries and mementos of various occasions.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

•

1.1 Dear Boys and Girls . The Summer weather seems to have come in with a rush and I suppose that a few of you have been in for a swim already. A thing we have to watch this early in the season is that the sand banks have not settled in their usual pattern and rips often develop. The sea which we knew so well last summer could be quite different now. So be careful and swim with other people in the areas marked out for swimming. I suppose most of you will be like myself having to come up with at least one dose of sunburn, even a mild one before we lose our winter whiteness. A letter arrived from Louise McKenzie wanting to join the J.R.'s Club. You wi ll have to fill in the form which is on this page Louise. quiry, your younger brother and sister would be most welcome too. You will see on this week's front page picture of a Bishop from Zambia in Africa. It is his seminary which is being supported by the Society of St. Peter the Apostle especially from schools in Western Australia and South Australia. I had the good fortune to meet the Bishop. He tells everyone to use his Christian name, Bishop Clement because his second name is so long. He told me that because of petrol rationing they can only get a gallon a month for a car and half a gallon for a motor bike. That would not take you far would

it.

Don't forget to keep those going for exams in your prayers. God bless you all, BROTHER JUNIPER.
