Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses Inside Truths HAT is the difference
W
between these two questions: "How for is Saturn from Jupiter?" and "What is your age?"
YOU might answer the first question with: "I couldn't care less," but the second question you might resent, saying: "It's none of your business." But what these queries do reveal is that there is a double kind of knowledge available to our minds—"outside truths" and "inside truths." "Outside truths" are those that do not demand any change on our part; they are bits of knowledge and information to which there is no personal involvement. In this category belong most commercials we hear on radio and television and most of the knowledge that is given to us in school, such as history., trigonometry and languages. These truths do not keep us awake at nights; they do not affect our behaviour and rarely may they be classified as uncornfortable.

"INSIDE TRUTHS," on the " contrary, are those which affect me personally, which make me come face to face with my character and which, once accepted., make me better or worse. An outside truth tells me "all the angles of triangle are equal to two right angles." But an inside truth may say, "I am drinking too much and if Ido not stop I am going to ruin my health." Or, "Would it not be better for me to try to find a little more peace on the inside of my heart than so many distractions on the outside." An inside truth is one that calls for. response. It may even repel me, such as a realisation of making money through a dishonest transaction or cheating. An inside truth never leaves me as I was. I take it either for the better or for worse; it becomes a blessing or a curse; it either makes me climb up a hill or go down a' hill. The outside truths never commit me to any kind of action, such as a knowledge of how many tons of hemp were exported from Nigeria to Jamaica in one year. An inside truth commits me to action., such as when I discover the

hunger of my neighbour. Most of the knowledge people have of religion, morality, Scripture and ethics is an "outside truth," or one to be used on Sundays. It could very well be that in these areas of knowledge we have too much knowing and not enough doing. We are like young wives who buy an encyclopaedia of French cooking, read it through, but never get beyong making pancakes which never turn into crepes suzette. Every theologian should be a saint but very few of those who have a D.D. behind their name ever have an St. in front of it. Our modern minds are overburdened with knowledge, but impoverished of good deeds. What makes a person of simple faith so appealing is that they have practically no non-used ideas. They know they ought to love God and neighbour, and they do. Their lives lack complexity and are like our super-structures which appear as cathedrals on stilts. TRUTHS that are not acted upon often perish. The man who did not use the talent given
him, buried it in the earth; eventually he had it taken away. On the contrary, as a truth is put into practice, more truth is revealed. It is very much like climbing a succession of hills; what lies beyond the first hill we cannot see or know until we have reached its summit; then the summit of the second hill is revealed, and so progress in knowledge continues through activating what is already given. To those who act on what they know, more will be revealed. Christ said: •'If you do My will, you will have My Doctrine." Increase of faith Will come from virtue more than from study. Tru'th without practice turns men into brains without heart; doing without an inspiring truth keeps the hearts busy but tlie brain empty. Every truth that is good for anything must leave behind it an eithical furrow ready for the planting ofseeds. Activity without any basic truth from which it proceeds is likg tying !oranges on dead branches. The happy man is the one who never compensates for a want of inside truth by piling up outside knowledge. In other iwords, "know thyself" is the beginning of true wisdom.

Back To Aquinas
A moment of quiet prayer as the procession winds its way from the assembly oval to the Benediction oval. The atmosphere at Aquinas was a definite aid to the purpose of the day, to give honour to Christ the King.
The Blessed Sacrament carried by Bishop M. McKeon approaches Aquinas Chapel.
A last minute briefing to Y.C.W. flag bearers is given by one of the organising committee, Mr. R. English.

TIES THAT BIND. .. Sex Education by FATHER T. McHUGH
I I
i
N emphasising the personal dignity shared by every human being, the C hurch has continually stressed the value of education.
THROUGH the educative process the child comes to know himself, his personal abilities and talents, and his capacity to relate to other human beings. A very important aspect of the growth and development of the child is his ability to understand human sexuality. That God made "male and female" reveals the fact o f the difference between the sexes; that man after all these -years is unqble to understand human sexuality emphasises the depth of the mystery.
WHAT VATICAN II SAYS 1
THE COUNCIL., in speaking of the family, acknowledges the two different individuals that initiate the marital community. It speaks with great conviction of the "eminently human love- which binds he
spouses together, and enriches their expressions of affection. "This love," says the Council, "is uniquely expressed and perfected through the marital act. The actions within marriage by which the couple are united intimately and chastely are noble and worthy pries." , Further on, the Council Fathers state that,, "Especially in the heart of their own families, young people should be apty and seasonably instructed about the dignity, duty and expression of married love." The same emphasis is expressed in the Decree on Education when the Fathers, addressing all who share the tasks of education, say quite clearly, "As they (children) advance in years, they should be given positive and prudent sexual education," This concern of the Bishops is reflected in the general awareness of the necessitiy for a total programme of sex education. By "total programme" I mean the ultilisation of the resources of the home, the school, the Church, the community and the various profes sions that help direct the growth and development of the individual person.
There are many contributory forces to this new direction. Concern about the sexual irresponsibility of the unmarried, increasing recognition of the sexual maladjustment of married couples, the uninhibited, and too often unreal, obsession with sex in the mass media are panic factors. On the positive side, encouragement for the school system to integrate sex education into the curriculum as a natural component of the educational process has come from the National Association of Independent School and more recently from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in America.
Fl C ATHOLIC PROGRAMME PLANNED IN THE United States, the Family Life Bureau and Department of Education of the National Catholic Welfare Conference are in the process of formulating a programme for the Catholic school system. In attempting to define the role that the school should play, the conviction that this is primarily- a parental responsibility emerges ever more strongly. The school, Church and community can provide information in different ways. but the formation of wholesome attitudes depends on the parents. Yet, with all our realisation of the problem, here we sit, parents and educators alike, asking what to do and how to do it. I have always found parents quite concerned about their responsibility, one that they do not find easy to fulfil.
SUGGESTED READING
THERE are suggestions that can be made. First of all, we must accept the magnitude of the challenge and commit ourselves to a co-operative effort. On the parish Level, task forces of parents, teachers and priests might meet regularly to think out ways of develop ing new approaches.
Finally, there are some fine new publications that will prove helpful to parents. "The Wonder of Sex," by Dr. and Mrs. Willke, is a well-written book containing basic information. "Your Child's Sex Life, by Mrs. Valerie Dillon and Father Walter Imbiorski, provides further ingight irtto thfe own thinking. "Learning to Love," by Marc Oraison, the priest-psychiatrist, is geared to teenagers and can help the youngster to under stand his own emotional and sexual development. As we move towards the "total approach" mentioned above, we should resist the panic that makes us fearful. Youngsters today are not oblivious to right and Wrong, but in a sexually permissive society, they require more knowledge and motivation. Beginning early in the child's life, parents can and must impart the knowledge and the values, and in doing so will gain deeper in sights into their own sexuality.

* By EDITH MeNAMARA THE greatest prerogative that man has is his freedom to work. The secret of the true love of work is the hope of progress) and the successful result in the accomplishment of the work itself. Miss Nennie Harken, of Henley Street, South Como, was born at Narrogin and attended the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions in Narrogin and Katanning. Later her family moved to Perth, and she completed her education at Sacred Heart Convent, Highgate, and the Teachers' Training College, Claremont. Miss Harken is the First Mistress at the Carlisle State School. Her main interests are centred round the State School Teachers' Union, and the West Australian Council for Equal Pay and Opportunity. She is on the Executive of the State School Teachers' Union, and was first elected in 1957, and has been re-elected at each annual conference. "The fact thatI am a woman on the Executive," said Miss Harken, "means that I have taken a special interest in women in the department." On several occasions Miss Harken has been included in the delegation to represent Western Australia at the Australian Teachers' Federation Conference, which is held annually in different State Capitals. This year she is one of the six representatives from this State who will attend the conference in Tasmania next January. The West Australian Council for Equal Pay and Opportunity was formed in Perth in 1958. Miss Harken was appointed the Teachers' Union representative, and for the past five years has held the position of chairman, The Council for Equal Pay is a world movement. Support for payment for the job without discrimination of sex was given in the United Nations Charter, 1945; Declaration of Human Rights, 1949; and the International Labour Convention of 1951. When addressing delegates to an Inter-

national Union of Women's Societies in Rome on September 11, 1947, His Holiness Pope Pius XII expressed support for equal pay— "This principle can be equality of salary for equal work performed by men and women. This is the cause which the Church has upheld for a great length of time and which it has made its own" (Acta Apostolicae Sedis. 1947, p. 487). -The position in Australia at present," said Miss Harken, "is that while all political parties approve of the principle involved, the Federal and State Governments say that its introduction must come through Arbitration: whereas the Federal Industrial Commission has stated that its function is not to introduce far-reaching social reforms." It is interesting to note that since 1958, in New South Wales, equal pay is law, and all women teachers, librarians, many public servants, some shop assistants and some workers in industry receive equal pay. "I first became interested in union matters„" said Miss Harken, "when I was convinced that Catholics must play their part in such organisations." Miss Harken also belongs to the Legion of Mary and the Catholic Teachers' Guild.

Fellow priests have dubbed the auto school and repair shop "Mac's Motors." "There is a rapid growth of transport and industry here," Father McDonald said. "But the training of apprentices is not up to standard, most mechanics having only a grammar school education, and the need for educated, well - trained mechanics is very great." Father McDonald accepts as students boys with at least a high school education. There are even a few college graduates in his present class. "The youth are gradually beginning to appreciate the value of manual labour in an industrialised country. A lot of young men can easily learn further techniques valuable in industry after obtaining a knowledge of motor mechanics." Father McDonald, a veteran of nearly thirty years in the China missions, considers the automotive school as a practical way of helping the young men of the locality who have finished high school but are not prepared for any job. "It's a natural for boys to be interested in motors, and the local youth are obviously grateful for the opportunity now given them — they treat me with a new respect . . . and not only the Catholics." Already 38 boys have been graduated aftei completing the six-month course at St. Christopher's Auto School, and 25 young men are now being trained. "Six months is not enough, of course," Father McDonal said. "We hope eventually to have a course of one year, or one year and a half, rotating 25 students in three-month

PROGRAMME FOR PLAYERS
This soldier -saint was born in what is now Hungary in the 4th Century. --Because Martin spent most of his life in France he is usually regarded as French. It was while he was stationed at Amiens in northern France that the famous incident of the cloak occurred. One miserably cold winter's day he met a poor man at Amiens gate shivering with cold and begging alms of the passers by. Martin had no money to give but he drew his sword and halved his heavy military cloak. One half he wrapped around the shoulders of the trembling beggar. That night Martin had a vision in which he saw Christ robed in the same garment and heard him say. "Martin, yet a catechumen, has covered Me with this garment." At once Martin sought baptism and then was discharged from the Roman legion at Amiens. Shown is the main street of Amiens today. St. Martin is still greatly honoured in Amiens. Martin returned to Hungary, converted members of his family, and then went t hrough central Europe preaching against the Arian heresy. The Bishop of Poitiers then gave him some land and Martin established the first monastery in France. After ten years he was chosen to be Bishop of Tours in which capacity he spent his remaining 26 years.

Rock Garden
A ROCK GARDEN CAN BE AS BIG AS YOU W ANT, OR IT CAN BE QUITE SMALL, ITS SIZE DEPENDING ON JUST WHERE YOU WISH IT TO BE IN YOUR GARDEN. A slight slope is best, although a steep one can be used, or by building UP soil, you can achieve a beautiful rockery on level ground. A fter collecting the rocks, examine each Piece and place the most attractive side outwards. It looks much more effective to mix the large and small rocks all over the rockery—rather than graduate them with the bigger ones below and smaller ones at the top. There is an infinite variety of small plants available for rock gardens, and some of the lovely flowering varieties 'tingled with austere cacti produce a gay and Pleasing effect requiring :%erY little effort to mainOnce your rook gar"en is established,

1.1 Dear Boys and Girls . . . . Dear Boys and Girls, I t was certainly a wonderful day a t Aquinas last Sunday. The First Communicants looked very nice in their white frocks and shirts, I hope when you read this that none of you are suffering from cracker burns. I meant to mention it in my last letter, but space ran out on me. I took longer than I thought to j udge the last colouring competition. The standard of entries was very High and the age groups are improving all the time. The winning entries appear elsewhere on this page. Congratulations to you, your prizes will be forwarded this week. Please let me know that you receive them. There is a new competition beginning this week. It is a little smaller than the usual size, so you will have to exercise a lot of care when you put the different colours in.
Thanks to all who entered the last c ompetition. There were a lot of entries.
The big thing coming up now is the annual examination. Even though they are all important, don't forget a prayer for those going for the Junior and Leaving exams. They are all now too old to belong to the Junior Readers, but many of them Have been members in the post. They are hard at it now because their exams start before most class exams. Also, I know that there is no real need to remind you of the Holy Souls during the month of November. They need our prayers badly, because we a re the ones who have to do their praying for them now that they are in Purgatory. God bless you all, BROTH ER JUNIPER.

NDIAN BISHOPS I MISSION NOTES SPELL OUT NEW CHURCH'S PLANS By
REVEREND FATHER W. J. FOLEY
JAPANESE DAY FOR COMMEMORATING THE DEAD.
ocean, rivers and lakes and th spirits are bid farewell just as one does when a family guest departs.
THE manner of observing "0Bon," a day dedicated to the dead of Japan, is undergoing changes. Observed according to the Buddhist calendar on July 13, "0-Bon" is in many places in Japan celebrated on August 15. According to the old custom, the observance begins with two days of preparation in advance when fires are lit at the entrances to homes and small lanterns are hung up at the doors. In some places lights are carried to river banks or shores of lakes to guide the dead, who, it is believed, return to their former homes on this occasion. It is also the custom to visit cemeteries and to adorn fam,ily altars with gifts before a white cloth is spread,, and across which, it is believed, relatives can communicate with their deceased. Sometimes straw horses are placed on tombs as a means of transport for the dead. On the day itself, bonzes visit homes and pray before family altars. The day after "0-Bon," the departure of the dead is helped by the placing of fires on the lintel of the house door and in some places straw boats are launched on the
In the present day, regard for the dead is widely expressed in other ways. For example, representative delegations are sent to the former battlefields in the Philippines, Okinawa and other islands of the Pacific where many Japanese died in World War II. Thus "0-Bon" has become a day when the Japanese honour those who died in the war. In Tokyo, there is a national commemorative observance over which the Emperor himself presides. In cemeteries, tombs are adorned with significant emblems —the chrysanthemum, which is the symbol of the Emperor, is widely used for the purpose. Whilst praying for our dead during November„ let us remember those who do not have the Holy Sacrifice as a suffrage for this.
EVOLUTION OF "0-BON," THE
THE Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, concluding a seven-day meeting in New Delhi last week, made plans to "up-grade" the Church in India along lines laid down by the Second Vatican Council. CARDINAL Valerian Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, presided over the conference. He told the 80 Bishops, 20 of them foreigners, that the main work before them in the corning months is to "project the right image of the Church" to Hindu India, so the people will understand the Church is here to serve and not to dominate. The Church in India, he said, is fighting battles on many fronts. It is trying to save the workers from Marxist influence, arrest the decline of public morals, safeguard thc f amily, and purify public life in business and poli tics.

These practices, steeped in really profound human sentiment, have all but disappeared in large cities and centres of population, where they are recalled by folkloristic dances. Nevertheless, "0-Bon" even in these latter places, relatives will come from afar to the family home and to visit the tombs of their ancestors.

HOW often in cities, health departments ask citizens to submit to an examination for cancer so that the disease may be halted! But how few ever comply. Why? They are afraid that they will discover they have cancer. Hundreds of thousands of people prefer to live AS-IF they were healthy. They are afraid to know the truth, so they invent excuses: "I feel healthy." "Nothing wrong with me!" "Never felt better." What is dreaded is an encounter with Truth. Just as people avoid meeting those to whom they owe money and throw away envelopes which contain bills, so they take flight f rom any revelation of their true . thysical condition. APPLY this to the moral order. W hat is the reason for their unbelief? Why irreligion? Why push away a Bible in a hotel room? Because we do not want to know the Truth about ourselves. In the stillness of night we see ourselves in flashes as we really are, and t hen distract ourselves to escape the searchlight glare of our conscience. We live AS-IF we were good. About the only time some ever use the word conscience is when they say, "My conscience tells me I am right." What cancer is to the body, that our disordered life is to our spirit. We choose to live AS-1F everything were in order organically and morally. . . ENCOUNTER with Christ in this state must be avoided. We do not feel uneasy when we speak of Confucius or the Vedic hymns. We are not upset by having a statue of Buddha placed in our room. But would we allow a crucifix to be hung before our eyes? Why the difference? It is because we are not involved with Buddha, but we do seem to be involved with Christ. Somehow we seem to be in the same relation to Christ as our bodes are to an X-ray machine-He may discover what is wrong on the inside. We walk on the other side of the street to avoid all contact and involvement with Him. We can no longer live AS-IF we were good and self-satisfied. So we say., "We do not believe." Unbelief is the fear of the truth about ourselves. BUT there is another side of the picture. Just as submission to an X-ray may reveal the disease, it will also point the way to a cure. toothache may indicate sorre,
hidden infection. If we face up to it, we submit to the dentist's drill and cure the cause of the ache. In like manner, the encounter ,with Christ is frightening, but once we meet Him head on and discover our true condition of heart„ at once all our burdens are lifted. Before the encounter, He appears as a judge; after the encounter as an intercessor. Before the encounter He seems to be "purplerobed and cypress-crowned," after the encounter He is the all-loving Heart. But here the analogy with medicine begins to fail. The physician does not take on cancer to cure it; but Christ takes on sin to forgive it. His empathy is so great t hat our loneliness is His loneliness. Our seeming abandonment by God, He feels as His own as He cries out on the Cross. Forgiveness cost Him something—His life. He became our hostage and our surety, "making Himself a sinner" to blot out our sins. ALL you AS-IFERS should prepare for the encounter with Christ by getting rid of some of the sham of your life in the following ways: (1) Do not give your money to institutions or persons who are already rich; (2) Give to the poor and you are giving to Christ; (3) Be certain that the one to whom you give your externals will not invest any of it; (4) The distribu tion of your alms should be done by someone who has the interests of the poor at heart. These conditions are not too difficult to fulfil for the Holy Father has estabThe lished a means to do this Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which has "first place" among all mission societies.
