IIE recent report given by the Press of the British churchmen refusing to condemn intercourse outside of mar-riage, among other things, as being invariably wrong gave cause for alarm. The additional reports given of its apparent wide acceptance, according to one paper, by various Ministers caused that alarm to veer towards shock. There was the tendency to rush into print and blast the report and the men with as mighty a blow as possible. After waiting and reading a comment from a reliable and well-informed paper on the spot, the alarm, the shock and„ once again, the cynicism, comes not from the report, even though some of its conclusions can in no way be agreed with, but from the reporting. The wire service which supplied the report to Australian papers highlighted the most controversial suggestions in the report without qualification which was made in the report. Australian churchmen„ when asked to comment on this inadequate summary, apparently hastened to be on the "with-it" bandwaggon and gave agreement to something which the British Council of Churche., had not itself agreed to. This makes for irresponsible journalism and imprudent judgments. Especially when it is from an international news source and the repercussions will be felt far and wide. Seldom, if ever, do false impressions receive correction. The actual report was made up from a party not composed of theologians or ministers of religion, and the report presented does not profess to be a statement of the Christian case which the working committee was originally asked to explore. The working report was an internal document for consideration and should not ha\ , been published in the name of the British Council of Churches before that body itself had considered it. The churchmen were seeking an answer to t he present-day problem of Christianity being put on the defensive and told that it must either justify itself or alter itself to fit humanist premises. What the working party had really done was to come back to the British Council of Churches with its findings designed to give a conspectus of current social behaviour, and indications not of how the traditional Christian code can best be vindicated (which was what they were asked to do) or made acceptable„ but with their own questions whether in the contemporary world Christians themselves should not be prepared to show themselves much more flexible and permissive towards what has been up to now firmly ruled out. Whether the British Council of Churches accepted this reversal of its prior question is not yet known. It is to be firmly hoped in their understanding of the true Christian message that they do not accept it. They should not, however, be prejudged by a secular news source, with an eye to the sensational. Religion is done a distinct disservice. Among other suggestions the report makes in its close is an account of the group method in action, by which young people are encouraged to discuss what is so much on their minds, and notes how often the right conclusions are reached, looked at purely in terms of human relationships, that sex should be for marriage and marriage for life. The report also indicated that while rules and codes can provoke rebellion and encourage deception, they can also be for many people, especially young people, a great source of strength and support, with the conviction that there is a good reason for what has a strong consenus behind it. It would have been a different kind of news story if these parts had been emphasised. But then it would never have made a story. The Christian revelation on moral conduct is no milk and water adaptable rule. BUT MAN DESPAIRS, AND FOR TWO REASONS.

IT takes eternity to make a man despair. As Freud said when he contemplated himself as dead, he looked upon himself as a spectator of his own death. Animals lack this sense of a "life better than this," even though they reduce it to death. As every acorn bears within itself the possibility of an oak, so every man bears within himself the possibility of fulfilment, but not in time. Time is a robber of beauty, of strength and ultimately of possessions. It takes the Infinite to make a man despair. No squirrel ever piles up more nuts than he would need for the coming winter, but man piles up more money than he would need for a thousand years.

He reaches for the stars and is never satisfied; as a result he tries to multiply the finite into the Infinite, only to discover that he is multiplying zeros. As long as he has no encounter with the Infinite, he either becomes totally indifferent to life, or else loses himself in the masses as an imitation, a number or a cipher.

THE second reason for the possibility of despair in man is, that though he hungers for salvation and for peace, he does not and cannot find it through his own resources. Relying only on himself, he has no other possibility of fulfilment than by lifting himself by the lobes of his ears. This having proved futile, he lapses into hopelessness. This reliance upon one's own resources very often induces an indecisiveness and

And he becomes aware that he did not give himself life, so he will know that he cannot dispose of himself altogether, or better that. he cannot escape judgment. Every suicide has made his own day of judgment.

We are sinners, but there is a Saviour and a Cross. There is a way of appropriating the Cross to our lives and outlives to the Cross.

Thus despair is

N attempting to understand all the many things that are a part of man's daily life, the constitution on the Church in the Modern World speaks of human solidarity and the importance of social relationships to the life of the Christian.

Quoting the dogmatic constitution on "The Church," it recalls that "it has pleased God to make men holy and save them not merely as individuals, without any mutual bonds, but by making them into a single people, a people that acknowledges Him in truth and serves Him in holiness." The constitution goes on to describe Christ's social relationship with His relatives, His apostles , and His friends. It speaks of His attendance at the wedding at Cana. IS HOLINESS ALOOF? THE emphasis of this section is especially important because too often we apply the definition "holy" or "religious" to a person because in addition to being charitable and prayerful, he may also be quiet and reserved, even somewhat withdrawn. We seem to equate "holiness" with "aloneness" and do not expect a deep spiritual commitment from the engaging and friendly man who is completely at ease at the crowded cocktail party. In other words, the stereotype of the saint doesn't fit me or my friends, and so it is too easy to exclude the whole realm of valuable human friendships from growth in Christian living. Paradoxically, the !.rowth of the Christian may well

be impossible without the help of friends. That is why the questions that the Council considered, "what is is friendship, what does it require, what is its value," are of such importance. Friendship has many elements„ of which we might consider only three. Friendship involves me, my friend, and the bond that exists between us. First of all there is me. I am humanly attracted to someone who has similar tastes or interests, who shares similar attitudes, or who conforms to my idea of what a good friend should be. In all of this the basis of the attraction is me, my expectations., my concern with how the other person can enrich me. I am playing it safe, I am considering the other from the aspect of similarity. The second element of friendly relationship is the other person. We all have a certain altruism that can lead us into all kinds of problems by involving us outside ourselves. I may perceive in the other person certain points of difference that I admire, or at least that I am intrigued by. I also sense that the other person realises the differences, and somehow he likes me. This also implies that I can give him something. I can be of value to him.

BOND OF FRIENDSHIP WE now come to the final element, which is the bond of

friendship. This bond demands a mutual giving of self, a mutual acceptance of the other, It shoots beyond the safety of similarity or the attraction of clearly perceived differences and demands risk, involvement and commitment.

It takes me into the unknown: at the same time requiring that I test my grounds for furthering this human relationship. In other words, it calls for a decision as to whether I am entertaining an acquaintance, or building a relationship that will require trust and confidence, understanding and patience, and a special quality of love. The needs of the family of man require of each of us an openness to love. This means a continual purification of selfishness:, and a willingness to gamble on another person. Not every personal relationship will culminate in a deep mutual friendship, but mankind will be richer if we allow ourselves to get beyond self-reflection in our dealings with other persons. We get closer to the answer of the questions of friendship in a paraphrase of John Kennedy's words: "Ask not what the other can do for you, but what you can do for the other."

FOCUS * By EDITH McNAMARA A BOUT three weeks ago, the State team of the Catholic Girls' Basketball Association arrived back in Perth. One of the first to step from the train was the captain of the team, Miss Rosemary Bly ( 21), of Peplar Avenue, Salters Point. Rosemary was born in England, but came out to Australia with her parents when she was six years old. She attended Applecross High School. "The Carnival," said Rosemary, "was a great success. I think I could say that every girl enjoyed herself. Victoria came through undefeated and won the Shield." Western Australia was placed second in the Australian Catholic Girls' Basketball A3sociation Shield, and drew for third place in the "All-Corners Shield." New Zealand competed in this section of the Carnival. This is the second time that New Zealand has participated. Two West Australian girls were selected for the All-Australian team — Miss Wanda Wysocki and Rosemary. Rosemary was made captain. "You can imagine how surprised and thrilled I was," she said. "At first I couldn't believe I had been made captain." This really was a credit to Rosemary, when one considers that she only played in three of the matches of the Carnival. "We had our fair share of injuries," said Rosemary. "One girl fell down the stairs and broke her elbow, another girl tore ligaments in her knee and I tore the ligaments in my ankle. Three players were injured and this left us without reserves."

The West Australian team stayed at St. Anne's Hall, in Carlton. This is a threestorey boarding house run by the Daughters of Charity. Rosemary is also captain of the Manning District Catholic Basketball team., and has coached junior basketball in that district. She has represented the State team for six years, two years as a juior and four years senior. She was vice-captain in 1964 and 1965. One would imagine this would be enough basketball, but no—Rosemary plays Men's Rules Basketball during the summer months She also plays tennis and squash. When there is time away from all this sporting activity, Rosemary loves to read, and her ambition is to travel. She would like to go to New Zealand. England and other parts of the world.

This is manifestly untrue because one can understand Mahler's music only by knowing Mahler's life in some detail.
