The argument of Madame de Beauvoir is not very sound and is born of disillusionment, for she ends up her story with the idea, "I have been gypped." UT there is something in modern civilisation which women may rightly resent, and that is what might be called their de-personalisation. Think of the millions of pin-ups that have been circulated out of Hollywood alone. These find their way into barracks, college dormitories, high school locker rooms, magazines and billboards. In most instances, the pin-ups are not identified. Even if the name of the pin-up is given, it could appear on 100,000 walls. Such a phenomenon means the cult of the general, the loss of the particular. It is not a certain lady or girl who is admired, but girlhood, womanhood, flesh-hood. None of these things exists in the concrete order. Woman ceases to

Man, when the ecstasy declines, seeks substitution, while the woman seeks depth. The difference is somewhat the same

In modern times, there have been two protests against blaming woman for the ills of humanity. One was the feminist movement, which held that woman was the equal of man. The other more recent-the writings of Madame de Beauvoir. She inveighs against man on two grounds. First„ that up until now, nobody ever thought about woman except as other than man. On the other hand, man has idealised woman, made her as a receptacle of myths, the pin-up, the

be a person; she becomes a function like any part of a machine, and is either exchangeable or disposable. A woman is an "it," not a person. If we transferred this kind of loving to humanity„ what poor person or sick person or leper would ever be helped? Aid would remain so much in the category of the general, that no particular person would ever become the object of charity.

Parents, wearied by the challenge of keeping Johnny out of trouble during the long, hot summer, breathe a sigh of relief. I always think that parents in early September look like men who found the oasis in the desert. In reality, things are not as settled as they seem, for as children return to the ordered structure of the schoolroom, they undergo a process of adjustment that betrays some of the worst aspects of their little personalities. They have returned not only to reading, writing and 'rithmetic, but also to responsibility—respon-

sibility commensurate to their age and ability. TIPS S OME IN the hope of lessening parental tensions, we will attempt to offer some tips on how parents can go about teaching responsibility. I say "we" because I owe the insights contained in the "tips" to a psychiatric friend, Dr. Robert McAllister. It is his contention that there is no handbook for teaching responsibility„ but a child can be taught ways of acting, attitudes about himself, and goals in life which will help him to become a responsible adult. I might emphasise the fact that the child is always on the way to adulthood, and we must be careful that we do not demand results that are still a little beyond his capability. There are, however, four distinct aspects to awakening a sense of responsibility in the child. The first of these is to act independently. From earliest years

the child manifests this as something of a natural endowment. He shows openness or curiosity for things about him and he displays enthusiasm and determination in regard to what pleases him. Parents must be sensitive to these indications of the child's self.. assertion; they must guide and direct it; they must recognise this childhood enthusiasm as the release valve in the tempest of emotional development. Secondly, the the child becomes aware of his development as a person among other persons, that is, as a member of a family, he must be given certain obligations that he is expected to fulfil. Some of these directly affect his life in the home, and are given by parents. Basically, these are the normal little domestic chores. The adult commitment to the "easy life" often stands in the way of expecting children to perform household chores, thereby removing from the child an opportunity to put his determination and resurcefulness to work. In addition to chores at home, the child also brings home the unfinished school tasks, popularly known as homework. It has become so complicated lately that parents can't do it, a good thing-since it is the child's obligation anyway. The child who never has homework is either kidding his parents or being deprived of an important facet in the learning process. The parent who usurp the responsibility, who "does it for him," stunts the educative growth

of his child. The third area of importance is teaching the child to accept his o wn mistakes and limitations. When he is somewhat frustrated he should be encouraged; but he may have to be reminded that some things are still beyond his ability. On the other hand, the over-demanding parent can sow the seeds of an inferiority complex • by enforcing his expectations as measurerments of the child's performance. OD DISCIPLINE

FINALLY., there is always need for discipline. The positive aspect of discipline is directive, and from time to time the child will step outside the guidelines. Correction and punishment commensurate to the offence are required to restore the balance. Again, it is a child who failed and who is being corrected. Punishment can never be allowed as adult retaliation. Parents, aware of the difference between adults and children, possess an intuition that helps them see the child growing to his full stature as a person. In providing guidance, the parent helps the child achieve a certain self-identity; and the child, secure in the interest and encouragement he enjoys, begins to show the developing sense of responsibility. The mutual respect provides a climate of trust.

first characteristic of a good nurse is THE cheerfulness. Because nurses have to do

so many unpleasant things, it is important for them that they possess this quality. Miss Stella Boxsell, of Huntriss Road, Doubleview, has a very cheerful personality. Born in Perth, she spent her early days of childhood at Port Hedland. She was educated at St. Brigid's., Lesmurdie, and enjoyed her chooldays spent there as a boarder. After leaving school, Stella decided to become a nurse and trained at Royal Perth Hospital and Queen Victoria Hospital, Melbourne. Stella is a Senior Sister at the Repatriation Hospital. Hollywood. For the past four years she has been filling the position of a Social Welfare Officer. `'My main function," she said, "is the placement of elderly pensioners in suitable accommodation. There are many old people who live on ther own. Old age is sad., and it is something we will all have to face one day." Perhaps the most exciting thing that Stella can recall was when she was chosen to be one of the nurses to accompany the 1949 Pilgrimage to Lourdes. "I can remember how excited I was," she said, "whenI was told that I was one of the t wo nurses who were chosen. Each nurse had 350 people to look after." The first port of call of the pilgrimage was Genoa. From there to Rome to join in the Holy Year celebrations. "We stayed three weeks in Rome," said Stella, "and during that time we were given a private audience by Pope Pius XII." The pilgrimage travelled Europe by train. From Rome they travelled to the beautiful city of Florence, across to Nice., and from there to the place they had travelled thousands of miles to see—Lourdes. • While we were at Lourdes," said Stella, "a programme was set out for us. The Stations are large, life-like figures, set in the side of a

hill„ and at the twelfth station a priest offers Mass. Mass is also offered every half-hour at the Grotto. To have even seen the Blessing of the Sick at Lourdes is a sight that will linger in your mind for all time." Fatima was the next stop. Here they met the parents of two of the children who had told the world of the vision of Our Lady. The parents, of course, were very old. From there to Paris, and then to Lisieux to see the home of the Little Flower. The pilgrimage spent six weeks on the Continent, and was four and a half months away from Australia. Stella enjoyed the experience so much that in 1953 when asked once again to go she accepted. "I think I noticed more on the second trip,she said. "The first time was too exciting." Stella., naturally, is very interested in the Nurses' Memorial Centre in Kings Park Road. Everyone connected with the centre is very busy preparing for a fete that will be held on November 19 in the Hollywood Repatriation Hospital grounds. The Nurses' Memorial Centre is the centre of nurses' organisations and this fete is being held to help pay for the building.

Those in whose hands rests the safety of the human family should realise that at this critical moment their consciences are bound by the gravest obligation. With their own country, with the world, God and history before their minds, they should carefully examine their moral record and obligations, remembering that men will esteem their memory if they will have followed this exhortation with wisdom.

Teresa was so absorbed in romantic books, perfumes, fashions and the I ke that at 15 she was sent by her father as a boarder to the convent at Avila. Back home after 18 months she found that she missed convent life and began to take an interest in Church history. Four years later she entered the convent permanently. St. Teresa was to reform many convents of her Carmelite Order and found numerous new ones. In meditation she reached the highest degree of mysticism. As a Carmelite nun she had every chance to contemplate God and eternity. The occount which t his saint has given of visions and revelations is like legal evidence. It is impossible to doubt the author's sincerity. Popes Gregory XV and Urban .VII considered Teresa's writings to be of equal value to those of a Doctor of the Church. S t. Teresa of Avila, one of the greatest, most attractive and widely appreciated women the world has ever known died in 1582 during the night of 4-15 October ( Gregory XIII had just ordered an omission of ten days so as to reform the c alendar). full-time worker in Adelaide, made a brief stopover in Perth this week on his way home from Japan and several South-East Asian countries. Greg left Adelaide two months ago for Tokyo to attend the World Assembly of Youth seminar as a representative from Australia's National Youth Council. He took the opportunity to observe the Y.C.W. in these countries and at a combined meeting of the girls' and boys' movements held this week he toln of his observations and experiences. He spoke' of the action taken by the Y.C.W. group in Tokyo who were concerned about the drift of rural workers to the cities in search of employment and the problems they met, such as housing and language barriers. This particular Y.C.W. group undertook a six-month enquiry into this question and one of their first steps after the enquiry was to run a recreational weekend for these people. At the weekend they organised hikes, entertainment and campfire songs. As night fell, the campfire in the centre of the ground was lit from four sides in a symbolic gesture of young workers from the four corners of the earth uniting themselves in the spirit of Christ. Greg felt that many people in Japan existed in a religious vacuum, but within themselves they knew of a guiding hand and were searching for God. The Y.C.W. was needed there because of the work it does in the factories, homes and offices, bringing Christ closer to the lives of young workers. In Malaya, all the full-time workers for the Y.C.W. are converts and the people are very enthusiastic and hospitable. There the Y.C.W. is reaching more than just the Christians-but all young workers. The Y.C.W. in these countries cannot continue and increase their good work without the support of the more fortunate countries. the support of prayers and money. This support is given through the International Y.C.W. and last night's meeting was held to launch International Month in the Archdiocese of Perth. International Month is a time when the money needed is raised, and Perth's target

this year is $600. Branches have been told their commitments, but all other people who feel that they can help meet this target are asked to contact the Y.C.W. on 23-4546. Those at the meeting were asked to contribute one dollar to start the fund off and the response was very encouraging, with approximately $30 being received and promises of more to corne. BRANCH ACTIVITIES.—The Palmyra girls' group basketball teams had a successful season, both making the grand finals. Unfortunately neither took off a premiership pennant. The group attended the "Girl of Today" talks last week, which they thought were very good. This weekend the girls will go to Marian Lodge. Y.C.W. SPRING BALL.— This is the last opportunity for girls who wish to take part in the "Miss Catholic Debutante" competition at the Y.C.W. Spring Ball to be held at the South Perth Civic Centre on Tuesday., October 18. Any girls wishing to enter will have to hand their names into the Y.C.W. Office by Tuesday, October 11. Also those who are going to the ball, would they please purchase their tickets from the Y.C.W. Office by next Friday. October 14, so that arrangements for catering can be completed. I hope you are all joining in the prayers for peace that were asked f or last Sunday. The Holy Father knows that this is the best way to achieve what a lot of other things cannot do. I n a particular way he stressed the use of the Rosary and we can do this in our home. Urge the family Rosary, be the first ones to suggest i t. It might mean missing out on a bit of "telly" before tea, but it wil l be worth while. We have a great interest as boys and girls of today in making sure that we wil l be able to grow up in peace. So make your contribution now by praying hard for peace. God loves the prayers of children. Christ picked them out and blessed them when He said, "Suffer l ittle children to come to me, f or such is the kingdom of heaven." You wil l remember that I had thoughts recently about doing a count of members in Junior Readers. Well, at last the huge task has been done. Allowing for those who have f inished their fourteenth year and including the new members today we have exactly 2,500. Right on the dot too. What a mighty group God bless the whole 2,500 of you. SCHOLAR TALKS OF COMMON CATHOLICPROTESTANT BIBLE IN CHINESE.— Long-established differences between Protestant and Catholic translations of the name of God and other basic names and concepts must be resolved before the goal of a common Bible in Chinese can be achieved. This was stated by Father Theobald Diederich, 0.F.M., chairman of the Hong Kong Ecumenical Council. Father Diederich pointed out that it was in the time of Father Matthew Ricci and other famous Jesuit missionaries of the 16th and 17th centuries that "Catholics formed their theological and catechetical terms and established the Chinese renderings of the titles of the books of the Bible as well as of the biblical names of persons. places, events, and so forth." He continued: "When the first Protestant missionaries entered China at the beginning of the last century —a time when relations be`I'

tween Catholics and Protestants were still very strained — they adopted their own terminology and

names, based on the English Bible translation.

Thus differences arose even concerning fundamental names and concepts, as for instance the expressions used for God., the Holy Spirit, redemption and sanctification.

He pointed out that the Catholic word for God, "T'in Chiu," means

"Lord of Heaven." The Protestant forms, "Shen" or "Shang-TV' mean "Spirit." The latter„ he noted, can also mean "ghost" to the Chinese, and ghosts, and sometimes spirits, are often something to be feared. *

It is wrong, for example., when it bids the Church to give up mortification, saying, "Come down from the Cross." It is right when it says to us who fall away from our loyalties to Christ, "But you also were with the Galillean," as the servant girl told Peter. The world today points its finger at the wealth of some in the Church. This criti-

cism should be seriously evaluated, but we should not forget that the Church has been a thousand times

more critical of herself on that point than the world.

TAKE the vow of poverty. What did Vatican II say? Read Chapter 13 of the Decree concerning the religious life. These are some of the points: (1) There should be no owning of great wealth, investments beyond immediate needs in stocks, bonds and real estate are forbidden; (2) Every sign of luxury is to be avoided; (3) Rich religious institutions are to aid the general good of the Church and especially thhe poor; (4) They will share their wealth with the other members of their society who are in real need; (5) They should not live above the level of those whom they serve; (6) Members should renounce inheritances; (7) The vow of poverty does not mean just dependence on a Superior (asking for whatever is needed or to make a trip), but demands that each members himself be poor.

NOW, while some are accumulating vast investments, it must be realised that others are not. We know one missionary society which practises poverty by sending 90

per cent of its personnel to the Missions. Only ten per cent of them remain (for teaching and in the ..,ociety's

houses in Europe. Another religious community has no income

except that earned by its members' hard labour. What is left after expenses is sent to the 'Society for the Propagation of the Faith for the poor of the world and the conversion of souls. Many other religious groups, particularly women. live in a state of poverty far below the level of even the poorest people in big cities. GIVE the Church time to put the Council decrees into effect. In the meantime, Catholics can help by cutting down their aid to already rich institutions. It would be good if a certified account of all the money received by any religious group was open to inspection by those who substantialy aid them. How much of what they receive is

given to the poor? The Society for the Propagation of the Faith has a good system: (1) A certified account of what has been received is rendered every year to every bishop; (2) The Holy Father and his Commission demand that every cent received as alms, over and above expenses, be sent within 12 months to the poor of the world; ( 3) The Holy Father will not allow his society to invest one cent of your alms in stocks and bonds or real estate. Your alms must be used for the poor and to bring the Not faith to the whole world. everyone is bound to such strict observances, but this is a good thing to know when you write a will or make a sacrifice, which hope you will do today to show you, too, are poor in spirit.
