After years of service in China, 15 of them spent under house arrest, she and her seven companions in the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were expelled as Western spies.

Scheduled for the last Sunday of October„ the function has been held for the last three years at Perry Lakes Stadium. The organisers considered the change back to Aquinas College to be in the best interest of the annual function and being in conformity with the wishes of the great majority of the people. Several changes were made at Perry Lakes to recapture the previous atmosphere of the procession and demonstration, but there appeared to be too many difficulties.

Forced to carry all her possessions and run up and down the stairs of her Peking convent, Sister Eamon was already exhausted when she boarded the train in Peking for her journey , to Hong Kong. With the , other nuns and an escort ' of fanatic Red Guards, Sister Eamon travelled without sleep over 1,500 miles—from Peking to Canton. and from Canton to Hong Kong.

• EVERYBODY MARCHING The move back to Aquinas will also revert to the method of the processon, with everybody T.:arching. All schools are invited to attend. Sodalities are requested to bring their banners. Further details of the procession will be given as the organising committee works out the detail:, in the following month.

• COLLEGE ADDITIONS The Aquinas scene will have changed considerably to those who were only annual visitors at the time of the procession. A new wing has been added, a science block and an extension to the front, Brothers' quarters, is in the process of erection. A main feature will be the excellent modern chapel recently blessed and opened.

Sisters, new to the Perth scene, may be found going around with their black bags for FOUR the next two or three months. They are Daughters of St. Paul. a Congregation founded in , Fainting near the bor-

1915 in the town of Alba, Italy. These Sisters are missionaries using modern means of communication—press, radio, films. TV—to spread the Word of God. One of the principal works of the Sisters is that of visitation among families, schools, hospitals, offices, prisons, etc., and distributing Catholic literature in these places. Today they number over two thousand professed Sisters and in Australia they are established in Sydney (1955), Melbourne and Adelaide (1962). In some places they have their own printing plants, film production centres, and even their own radio and television stations. THIS is the text of an address given at the Seventh World Congress of the International Catholic Press Union, held in New York last year, by BISHOP ERNEST J. PRIMEAU. The Bishop is a native of Chicago, is a former staff member of the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office. He became Bishop of Manchester, New Hampshire, U.S.A., in 1960, and played a prominent part in the Second Vatican Council.

THE PROBLEM OF FREEDOM AND AUTHORITY IN THE CHURCH

Those ministers, who are endowed with the sacred power, serve their brethren, so that all who are of the People of God and therefore enjoy a true Christian dignity, working towards a common goal freely and in an orderly way., may arrive at salvation." Having dedicated himself to the service of God, Gerard undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Passing through Hungary to his native Venice he was asked by the Hungarian king to become tutor to the royal prince. A t the same time Gerard began his work as a preacher. Many Hungarians were still pagans. When the See of Csanad was established, St. Gerard w as appointed its first bishop. He was the apostle of all that area. King Stephen supported the good bishop so long as he lived, but on his death in 1038 Hungary was plunged into anarchy and a revolt against Christianity was begun. Bishop Gerard was about to cross the Danube from Buda to Pest when he and his party were set upon by soldiers of the pagan claimant to the throne and upholder of idolatry. Gerard was stoned mercilessly and on his knees he prayed, "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. They know not what they do." At that moment he was run through with a lance. His body was thrown into the Danube. The heroic death of Bishop Gerard had a profound effect. The revered martyr's relics were enshrined in the capital. However, in 1333 the Republic of Venice obtained his mortal remains from the King of Hungary and they were translated to the Church of Our Lady of Murano on the Adriatic island of Murano. TIES THAT BIND ... As I see it, the central problem is the lack of understanding on the part of the parents and their young people.

NE of the most crucial periods that every person struggles through towards maturity is the time of adolescence, or, in more common parlance, THE TEENAGE YEARS. It is a time of rapid and sometimes unbalanced physical growth and a time of deepening personal friendships and loyalties. It is a time of uncertainty and insecurity, and of questioning the most basic values and commitments.

The uncertainty and insecurity often lead to rebellion and hostility and occasionally to alienation. Yet, despite the dangers„ most of our young people come through it all with a strong sense of justice, an honesty that ig sometimes embarrassing, and a capcity to love that is seldom fully challenged. I don't presume to know all the answers about the turbulent teenage years, nor do I know anyone who does. But I like young people, and after having taught in a high school for a few years, I have a great deal of confidence and trust in our youth. At the same time,I

am more than sensitive to the concern and worry of their parents who are often shaken by antics they don't understand.

NDERSTANDING NEEDED

THE newspapers are quick to pick up and magnify the incidents of juvenile crime, but the story of kids who spend their summer in inner-city projscts or in Southern poverty pockets remains unwritten. Reports on the economy tell of the vast sums of money they earn and spend, but their volunteer service in hospitals and children's homes is overlooked. The adult generation is quick to mock them for their foibles—long hair and tight pants—but the advertising community is busy selling them the products to continue their fads. Come to think of it,, some of their more outlandish forms of dress started out as the novelty of the fashionable country club.

This generation of young people has been growing up during times of greatest affluence and greatest insecurity. It is difficult for them to evaluate the tuture. In a sense, they don't completely understand themselves„ and they realise the need for someone else to supply understanding. As they look to their parents, they are too often met by a frantic and frightening admission that their parents don't understand This is often the them either. cause of tension, breakdown of communication and alienation., that is—a tendency for each to grow apart from each other.

F l PATIENCE HELPS ACTUALLY, what is of greatest necessity at this point is the effort to establish understanding. Parents must be patient, and must treat the young person as an adult without demanding adult activity. They must be willing to listen, and also willing to explain,. to answer questions, and sometimes admit they have no answers. At the same time, they must build a sense of trust and honour in their children by manifesting it in their own lives. Young people have obligations also. They must learn that experience doesn't always have the force of logic ,but still leads to wisdom. They must realise that tomorrow's

The basic ingredient of understanding is always communication. Adults and youth may use different idioms or terminology, but they do speak the same language. But they do have to work at it. They must air their views to each Dther; they must be willing to give and receive comment, and they must understand that discussion doesn't have to be final. One of the key ideas of the Vatican Council was the need for "dialogue" in every area of human endeavour. It is most necessary when there are differing viewpoints or convictions. It may not always lead to consensus, but it will help towards understanding. This is an especially important lesson for families. "The family is the school of deeper humanity.," where communication is the basis of learning and understanding is the cornerstone of wisdom.

Mary expelled from Red China, talked to reporters in Hong Kong to describe the eight Sisters' experiences in Peking during the recent Red Guard purge. A veteran of more than thirty years' service in China, Sister Olga Sophia commented, "Most of the Red Guards who broke into the convent were 13-to-15-year-old children„ but some older people and even a few policemen we knew came in to spur the youngsters on." "All of them thought they were doing their duty," Sister continued, "and truly we don't blame the children, who think they are being heroes. When they wrote insulting remarks about foreigners on our coifs„ pulled our veils down over our faces, and then threw them back and saw us smiling„ they were astoni lied. Having a quick look through the list of members I noticed a great number of boys in particular some of the girls too - like football. I suppose that they would be fairly well represented at all the footy matches and especially at the finals now being played. This is not a good thing and I hope none of you do it. I notice that the crackers have started their noisy appearance earlier than usual this year. Already a couple of boys have been injured by them. The best way to avoid injury with these is to save your money for something useful. If you do play with crackers please be careful. Usually it is the eye which gets the burn. They are too precious to risk for a loud noise.
