Police, Catholics Clash In Warsaw LAST SUNDAY DEMONSTRATING POL ISH CATHOLICS CLASHED WITH RIOT POLICE WHILE MARCHING TO THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE RULING COMMUNIST PARTY IN WARSAW. The violence came after a service in St. John's Cathedral to end celebrations marking :he Christian Millennium in Poland. Although there was nothing inflammatory in :he sermon delivered by Cardinal Wyszynsky, a large crowd of about 5,000 marched from :he cathedral to the Cardinal Palace chanting lymns. singing the national anthem, "Poland Still Is Free," and shouting support for the Cardinal and Bishops. The Cardinal urged the gathering to be calm and go home. Not heeding his plea. they marched slowly to the party headquarters. Police made no effort to stop them. but channelled them on to the footpaths. When they neared the headquarters, police reinforcements in trucks poured out of the alleys and squares and broke up the march, striking at random as the marchers fled. Although many were hit with the rubber truncheons. none was seriously injured. During the march the demonstrators chanted "Freedom of speech," "Catholics unite" and "We forgive, we forgive." The latter was apparently in support of the Polish Bishops' request to forgive the Germans for the World War.

EDITORIAL I IMPORTANCE OF I CONFERENCE T On the first day's news, everybody concerned with justice in education could not help but be pleased that the W.A. branch of the Australian Labor Party had reversed its policy on State aid. It decided that Federal and State Labor Governments could give financial help to independent schools. This was at least a s ensible and just decision. This was an important step in itself, that the delegates from this State could go to the special Federal A.L.P. conference in Queensland next month and vote for direct State aid to independent schools. The shattering news came the next day when it was reported that the Queensland branch had adopted the Federal A.L.P. recommendation against State aid. This brings another A.L.P. deadlock vote of 18 against 18, according to State branches, of those attending this conference on July 18. According to Federal conference standing orders, the chairman must declare a question lost in the event of an even vote. In which event the A.L.P. would remain opposed to justice in education. This apparent stalemate makes the July conference in Queensland so much more critical. This is so not only for the Labor Party, but for the whole climate of discussion on this question of justice and how it should be implemented. The vital point is that, unlike delegates from Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, delegates from Tasmania and Queensland are not directed by State conferences as to how they should vote an any issue. It is to be hoped that this conference will be able to put aside Clause 4 of the A.L.P.'s Federal platform. This clause recognises the right of all Australian citizens to send their children to independent schools. provided they do so at their own cost.

OUR LAST ARTICLE WE COVERED VARIOUS TIMES IN OUR LIVES WHEN WE MUST FACE THE QUESTION:

An inseparable characteristic of this duality is that the one who is in conflict with me, seems to be a person. It is always as if there were Someone looking. A father about to steal corn from a neighbour's barn took his son along as a lookout. The father said: "Did you look up the road?" "Yes." "Down the road?" "Yes, but, Dad, I think you had better look up."

WE FOUND that when our existence is threatened, or we are face to face with our personality in terms of guilt, suffering, and the like, or when we try to substitute an experience for destiny, this question is faced. These, and many other such jolts, reveal a psychological experience we shall call ENCOUNTER. It is a mysterious sense of duality. As one professor put it: "I am not me, but two; I am a 'me and a Ph.D.' My mind seems to be a battlefield in which wages civil war." In Freud's language, it may be between the Id and the Super-Ego, or it may be as Virgil described it: "I see and approve the better things of life; the worse thingI follow." Paul described it as the battle between "the law of the mind and the law of the body." Another poet said this duality begot fear within:

I hit out at others, but it is this Judge within me that I aim at. It will also be noted that those who battle against this judicial opposite are always slow to forgive others, themselves being unforgiven: "Men love in haste, but they detest at leisure."

He stands before me as a wrestler, one who grapples with me, draws out hidden strength, makes me realise that survival is conditioned upon being my_ self. He is one who makes me feel my. nothingness, my helplessness, and yet never makes me despair. In this encounter Iconfront my self and am forced to answer the question: -Who am I?" And what proves it better than the attempts which are made to escape mysel f in drink, in lust or in drugs? The soul feels less a Presence than an Absence; something is missing. The mind feels like a broken bone—there is

He received his primary education at the Carlisle and Merredin Convent schools and completed the first year of his secondary education at St. Ildephonsus' College, New Norcia, before entering St. Charles' Seminary, Guildford ,in 1955. At St. Charles' he obtained his Junior and Leaving Certificates and completed three years study in philosophy. From there he went to St. Francis Xavier's Seminary in Adelaide where he has been studying theology.

Also on Saturday, July 1, a bowling night will be held. • June 19 at the Glendalough parish school was a night of fun for some forty teenagers who attended a Y.C.W. evening of dances and games. A lot of effort was put into this night by the Y.C.W. leaders contacting, arranging supper, etc., but they were rewarded by seeing it go off so well. BILL HEBB This week the Perth Y.C.W. loses one of its most prominent and popular members. Bill Hebb, the full-time secretary to the Boys' Movement, has accepted a position with the National Executive of the Movement in Melbourne. Bill joined the Y.C.W. some six years ago as a leader in the Highgate branch. He became president of this branch and later diocesan president. During his time on the Executive he was for two years president of the Sporting Services Committee. When he was appointed to work full-time for the Y.C.W. two years ago, Bill relinquished the position of diocesan president. Soon after he commenced as full-time worker. Bill was selected by the International Executive to represent Oceania, which embraces Australasia, the Pacific Islands and New Guinea, at an International Leaders' school in Paris. He was away three months and during this time studied at first hand the f undamentals and principles of the Movement. This knowledge has been valuable to him in his work of helping and training other Young Christian Workers. Last Saturday night nearly a hundred relatives and friends gathered to say goodbye to Bill and to present him with a cheque and gift as a small token of the esteem and regard in which he is held. It is with regret that we say goodbye. but also we are proud that Bill has been asked by the National Executive to work for them. We wish him every success in his new position.

"I Must Go Down To The Sea Again, To The Lonely Sea And The Sky" JOHN MASEFIELD The writer of this poem obviously was a mariner, and to this day, the whole world depends on these men in a way that can only be realised with the personal discomfort of say the British Seamen's Strike. Sailors of the International merchant marine are often "taken for granted" in Australia: draw pays that are, by our standards, infinitely small.

What do these "POOR" Seamen do in a high cost port like Fremantle? The Apostleship of the Sea, themselves an International group, have tried for over 60 years in Fremantle to ease the burden on the sailors, both spiritual as well as material.
