Bishop Fulton F. Sheen Discusses . .

W

Subconscious

E LIVE IN WHAT MIGHT BE CALLED THE "AGE OF

BAD

CONSCIENCE."

WE cover it up by denying responsibility; we find scapegoats; we attack religion and all who have to do with conscience as their extinction might give us immunity from that distinction between right and wrong. If any science is unpopular today it is certainly Theology, particularly when couched in the language of reason and concepts which are alien to our moods and frustrations. But this does not mean there is no religion in modern man.

speaks more frequently through GOD our unconscious mind probably, than

our conscious mind, simply because our self-consciousness puts up obstacles to Him. God can guide us quite naturally in a particular direction without our being aware of it. What was it, for example, that induced Paul Claudel, an agnostic and unbeliever, to enter Notre Dame Cathedral at midnight on Christmas, and ultimately to receive the gift of Faith? Here was a reasonable man who was guided unreasonably. Very o ften stupid people come to God through very reasonable argurrients, and reasonable people come to God for no argument a t all. There is an outward force operating on the subconscious mind which changes its direction. If a ball is thrown across a room, it will go in a straight line, unless a foot or a hand is put out to divert it. The subconscious mind may be governed once by vice, and then suddenly turn in the direction of love. This change of attitude and transforma-

FROM THE AREA OF CONSCIENCE TO THE SUBCONSCIOUS. We say "religion" because nothing that is in man escapes the Providence and mercy of God. It is just as easy for God to work in a cellar as well as a first floor; in the realm of emotions as well as the realm of reason. The, very uneasiness of the subconcious mind with its fears and dreads and anxieties is a kind of a chaos for what might be called antipeace. But this chaos might be likened to the chaos in the second verse of Genesis, when the first creative word was rejected and left nothing behind but dis••• • •

tion requires that an outside Power or Spirit, that acts like a catalyst, bring together discordant elements into a new unity. When a person corresponds with this impulse from without, it is like turning on radio waves of speech, music, humour and learning, which fill the air. But these blessings do not affect the person until he is at the proper wavelength and tunes himself in.

order. And over that chaos the Spirit hovered like a dove bringing order out the disorder of creation, as the Holy Spirit, later on, breathing over Mary brought order out of the chaos of humanity.

was identified as Our Lord Who saw her real worth, that is to say, in terms of gold, a genuine treasure. The gaudy paint which covered the gold was her conscious approach to life. She was doing things to catch the eye, to appear significant, to impress the world and to endow herself with value. The $10,000 was her true value, which the Lord put upon her. She tried to find Him again, but He was gone, with the result that she had to accept the value which the Lord had put upon her.

says very often that dreams are JUNG compensations also for wrong opinions

we have of ourselves. He tells of one of his patients who had an exalted opinion of himself and was unaware that everyone who knew him was irritated by his air of superiority. He came to Dr. Jung with a dream in which he had seen a drunken tramp rolling into a ditch—a sight which provoked him to say: "It is terrible to see how low a man can fall." The psychiatrist says that it was evidently a dream in part compensating for his own inflated opinion of himself, but there was something more to it than that. It turned out that he had a brother who was a degenerate alcoholic. What the dream also revealed was that his superior attitude was compensating the brother. The world is not as irreligious as it seems at first glance. Religion has moved out of churches, to a large extent, to our frustrations, despairs, shame and neuroses. The only mistake the churches can make in the new order is to assume that everybody must come to them instead of their going to everybody.

our dreams reveal the SOMETIMES religious and moral state of the Carl Jung holds subconscious mind. that every dream is a manifestation of our spiritual state, but the interpretation, however, is not always easy. E. N Ducker tells the story of a woman who came to him with a dream that an old china closet was given to her' which she did not want. She took it to the dealer, convinced that it was worthless, but he gave her $10,000. He took a piece of sandpaper and rubbed off the gaudy paint, and there underneath was gold. A fter she got the money, she tried to find the person who gave it to her, but he was gone. Ducker explained the dream as follows: The china closet was herself which she regarded as worthless, in monetary value worth only a few cents. The dealer „, „

FORTUNATE are they who have the gift of making friends, for it is one of the best gifts to have. It involves many things, but above all the power of going out of one's self and appreciating whatever is likeable in another. Miss Oenone Weinman, of Grosvenor Road, Mt. Lawley, was born in Ceylon, and was educated at the Holy Family Convent in Colombo. The convent is run by Irish nuns, who look impressive in the biscuit-like fluted headdress of their habit. Miss Weinman passed her senior examination, which is eqt::11 to Western Australia's Leaving Certificate. With her mother and father, she has been here in Perth for three months. They decided t to migrate to Australia as part of the family 4 have settled here. "Our family seems to be a little scattered.' said Miss Weinman, "I have one sister in England, two brothers in the Merchant Navy, one brother a doctor and one sister still in Ceylon, and, of course, my brother and sister who have already been in Perth for three years. I am one of eight children." Music is the main interest in Miss Weinman's life. She studied both piano and singing, completing her final in the Royal College of Music examination. She belonged to the Catholic Choral Society in' Ceylon which has a large membership. "I was very fortunate to belong to the society." she said, "as it is only in the last t wo years that women have been admitted. I would like to say here that women do receive equal pay in Ceylon. but of course there i, no such thing as the basic wage." She went on to describe to me the terrible poverty that exists in India and Ceylon. "The average Australian," she said, "can not begin to imagine just how poor people are. Hardly a meal went by when we did not have a couple of complete strangers at the table. When we left home, there wasn't anything we did not give away. even down to materials we considered were just rags." One interesting point that Miss Weinman had to tell me was that in Ceylon one is never certain just when the weekend will be. It may occur in the middle of the week, depending on the position of the moon. From a Catholic point of view, it is not very satisfactory, one has to go to work after Mass. Miss Weinman spoke of some impressions she has formed since she has been here. "Everyone in Australia," she said, "seems to enjoy a fairly high standard of living. Goods seem to be very cheap compared to goods in Ceylon, and fruit is plentiful. Ceylon has a strict import duty svhch would tend to keep prices high. There are opportunities here. with employment for everyone." Apparently the landscape here can come as a surprise. It is so flat, while the interior of Ceylon is mountainous and can supply the viewer with breathtaking vistas. "Ceylon is a very beautiful country," she said. "and Australians are a very friendly

THE HOME'S GREATESTrThe Choice LABOUR- SAVER

IT WAS but a few years ago when one of the housewife's most unpleasant days was that on which the week's washing had to be done. FOR THE CHORE WAS AN UNPLEASANT AND TIRING ONE. The clothes were cleansed by a method now completely out of date—by means of a scrubbing board and stiff scrubbing brush. The clothes were quickly damaged by the bristles of the brush, but what was in some ways worse was the damage done to the housewife's hands. Then came the washing machine—a real boon. But in the early models this still called for handling of wet and hot material, although few women grumbled, so different was this day's work. 1

When we are attacked by the enemies of our soul or body she hurries to our help. Mary is not only the help of the individual Christian, she is the sure help of all Christians in the world. That help has been shown so frequently and so powerfully throughout the ages. Tuesday next is the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians. This feast should have a special meaning to Australians in particular because she is one of the patronesses of our c ountry. We should all show devotion to her as Help of Christians. We all need her help. That's all for this week. God bless you all. BROTHER JUNIPER. #4P.dr
