SUCCESS is never a success when measured wholly in terms of dollars. Life is becoming, rather than having; a goal in front, and not an achievement. The poet has said: "Beware of the man of one book," for he is always talking about it, instead of proceeding to write another. Those who boast of their success are not successful, and those who pride themselves on their perfection are not saints. From this, there follow two psychological observations:

It is partly because they measure their own lives in terms of success, and so they think that only those causes should be helped which are also successful. That is why the poor are more generous to the poor— because they know hunger, they give the little bread they have.

THIS brings us to the other psychological law governing perfection — the pharisaically perfect who have not known human weakness, are often less sympathetic and less helpful to the fallen, than those who, with the grace of God have picked themselves up from the mire. It was the Pharisee who sneered at the Lord when the adulteress woman came to pour ointment on His feet. He could not understand why Perfec-

Failures, if properly accepted, can lead to true success. Abraham Lincoln was defeated for every public office until he was elected President. Einstein was expelled from school in Munich because he showed no interest in his studies and later failed to pass a test for a polytechnic school. A BORTION AT about the same time a major newspaper was running a series of articles on what is being called the abortion problem. As this is being written, the final pitch has yet to be made, but the buildup is foreshadowing the conclusion. Something will have to be done about the cruel, inhuman, antiquated laws which forbid the

when she wants one. The victims of rape, incest and pre-marital sexual experimentations are being paraded across the pages of

newspapers and across the screens of TV. Their stories are being told with heartrending effect. The number of deaths of mothers seeking a quick termination from an illegitimate abortionist are not told in cold statistics only (these are not known exactly), but in emotional terms. The maiming, the sterility, the psychic depression from any abortion may be mentioned, but they are usually passed by quickly. Nothing has been said about how the operation is performed. It usually means the use of sharp surgical instruments to scrape out whatever may be in the womb of the mother. If the scraping process does not do the complete (I almost said a clean) job, then the tools are used to cut and sever. I remember reading the description of the surgical unit of an abortion mill. It told of a slim. tiny little hand with five perfectly formed fingers. The hand was cut off at the wrist, very cleanly, and lying next to a garbage pail.

A popular trend among the branches is the running of youth clubs. Six branches already cater for youth in their areas by this service and find that the clubs greatly help them in their work. Father J. O'Briein told the presidents that there is a need for them to use the sporting facilities of the Y.C.W. as a field of influence. The Gospel, personal enquiry, branch action, finance and the role of the president were fully discussed. It was pointed out that it is the president's responsibility to spread the teachings of Christ through the Y.C.W. and to train his leaders by regular contact with them and with the help and advice of his chaplain. A president must involve others in action with him and have an understanding of the role of the laity in the Church. 0 POSITIVE APPROACH Father J. Russell, the Director of Catholic Marriage Guidance, spoke to the presidents on the positive approach to love, sex and purity in company -keeping. This was followed by a panel discussion on companykeeping and marriage. succeed for them. Miss Mary Lee, of Essendon, Victoria, was a recent visitor to Perth. She was here for the Legion of Mary Jubilee celebrations. Born in Melbourne, Miss Lee was educated at Our Lady of Sion Convent, Box Hill, where she was a boarder for eight years. She graduated as a schoolteacher and t aught in Catholic schools and for the Education Department. "After a while I left schoolteaching," said Miss Lee. "As my two sisters had both become teachers, I decided that three teachers in the one family was just too much." She then became a telephonist and worked in a centre for mentally retarded children. She later transferred to a Government department and now works in the Department of Supply. "I have belonged to the Legion of Mary ever since my schooldays," said Miss Lee. "I belong in a group that helps boys and girls who are on probation. We worked with and under a trainee probation officer."

I try to help them in their everyday life so that they can work and mix with children of their own age. The Legion holds discussion groups and social activities to help with these problems."
