CARDINAL CAROM TO ARUM Votive Mass For Council IN MTH ON Jubilee WEDNESDAY
THE Congregation of Rites has approved a new votive Mass intended for special ceremonies during the postCouncil jubilee which lasts until May 29.
AFTER presiding at one of the most successful ever of the international meetings of the Young Christian Workers' Movement, Joseph Cardinal Cardijn arrived in Australia this week at the start of an eight-week tour.
The prayers to be used in the Mass in connection with solemn cathedral functions or other special functions such as pilgrimages to churches designated for jubilee indulgences will be published in pamphlet form soon by the Vatican Polyglot Press. It will include suggested Gregorian chants selected for their simplicity to encourage entire communities to sing them, rather than special choirs. The forthcoming publication was described in an article in Vatican City's L'Osservatore Romano by Father Anibale Bugnini, secretary of the postconciliar liturgy commission and under-secretary for liturgy of the rites congregation. The special Mass may be used when holy Mass is celebrated in a cathedral with some solemnity: during Eucharistic celebration at the end of missions or special courses of instruction on the conciliar decrees; for faithful who at the end of missions or conciliar instruction courses go on pilgrimage to a cathedral or a church designated by the bishop for gaining jubilee indulgences.
He will arrive in Perth on Wednesday next, February 9, for a six-day visit and will be given a Liturgical Reception in St. Mary's Cathedral on Thursday, February 10, at 7.30 p.m. It is hoped that the Cathedral will be filled to capacity on the occasion to afford His Eminence an appropriate West Australian welcome. W
ITH the forthcoming meeting between Pope Paul and Archbishop Ramsey of Canterbury, a further dimension has been added to the framework of Christian Unity. However, this goal of Christian Unity exposed by the recent Vatican Council is certain to remain elusive for many years, but it is a goal which must be achieved if Christians are to fulfil the will of Christ, and if Christianity is to have its maximum impact on the non-Christian world. The future of Catholic relations with other churches is a mystery which is in God's hands, and any wish for a blueprint at this stage is beyond apprehension. What is relevant at this point is the breaking of any false stereotypes we now have of each other. The heart of the entire movement towards fuller Christian Unity lies in the ardent desire expressed in the prayer of Christ: "That all may be one . . ." This is the source of the responsibility of Christians in the whole movement towards Christian Unity. It is the responsibility that Pope Paul spoke of in his encyclical on the Church when he reminded us that we cannot stand idly by in the drive towards unity, and that we must not close our minds and hearts to this problem. It ia in this spirit that Pope Paul will meet Dr. Ramsey and that he calls, while cautioning against the danger of "excessive enthusiasm," for the commitment of all Catholics to the progress of ecumenism.

POLISH communist leader Wladyslaw Gomulka has angrily accused the C atholic bishops in the country of trying to win Poland over to the West. In an hour-long diatribe directed against C ardinal Wyszynski and other Church leaders, Gomulka denounced the Polish hierarchy as a tool of Western ideology, and he warned the bishops to stay clear of political matters. The Polish nation cannot be won over to the West," he declared. "This nation is mostly Catholic. We know that Catholics all go to church, but they will not be won over to this creed. Religious freedom is all right, but we shall strongly fight any masked political activities. That is why we did not let Wyszynski go to Rome." "Let the Church be loyal if it wants to enter politics," Gomulka said. "You, Wyszynski, you. ANY PEOPLE HAVING SEEN MY "ANGEL" CLEAN MY BLACKBOARD ON TELEVISION, WILL ASK ON MEETING: "HOW IS YOUR ANGEL?" SO, LET US TALK ABOUT ANGELS AND THEIR ROLE IN OUR LIVES.
BUT here we use the word "angel" in a very restricted sense—not as a spiritual invisible messenger, nor a winged creature bearing a summons, nor even as a vision or anything preternatural. By an angel here we mean any person or event who has changed the whole course of our life, influenced our behaviour, made us turn right when we were about to turn left, and in general made us better. What lifts such a concept out of the natural order is that sooner or later it is seen as being an act of God.
ANGELS
The Book of Tobias says: "Raphael was an angel, but he knew it not." God sets many angels in our paths, but often we know them not; in fact, we may go through life never knowing that they were agents or messengers of God to lead us on to virtue, or to deter us from vice. But they symbolise that constant and benign intervention of God in the history of men, which stops us on the path to destruction or leads us to success or happiness and virtue.
Take, for instance, the story of young Tobias, who is sent by his father Tobit to the land of Media on a kind of economic mission. The mother is worried about sending the son on such a long journey, so he went out and found a guide whose name was Raphael. Raphael not only protected Tobias from dangers, helped him to collect a debt, but even found a good wife for him.

When I finished college, I took an examination for a national 'scholarship worth several thousand dollars. I was anxious to complete my education by working to a Ph.D., but at the same time, ever since my earliest recollection, I wanted to be a priest.

Accepting the university scholarship would have meant postponing my call to the priesthood and maybe endangering it. During the 'summer vacation after college graduation, I visited our professor of Philosophy and told him with great glee that I had won the university scholarship. He grabbed me by the shoulders and said: "Do you believe in God?" I told him the question was silly. But he challenged me: "But do you believe in God practically?" When I answered in the affirmative he said: "You know your duty. Go to the seminary now and begin studies for the priesthood. Tear up the scholarship." But I protested, "Why cannot I work now for my Ph.D. and then go later to the seminary?" He retorted: "If you make that sacrifice, I promise you that after your ordination to the priesthood you will receive a far better university education than before." I tore up the scholarship, followed my duty, and after ordination as a priest, I spent almost five years in graduate

DR. PAUL TOURNIER, who is one of the greatest of modern psychiatrists, says that for years his life was banal and confused, and never entrusted clearly to the guidance of God. Both he and his wife made such a commitment for Divine Guidance and found great happiness. As he put it in one of his books: "God led us step by step, from event to event. Only afterwards, as we look back over the way we have come, and reconsider certain important moments in our lives in the light of what followed them, or when we survey the whole progress of our lives, do we experience the feeling of having been led without knowing it, the feeling that God has mysteriously guided us. We did not perhaps know it at the time. Time had to elapse to enable us to see it. But He opened the unexpected horizon to us." Francis Thompson, speaking of the universality of this kind of angel, said: "Stir but a stone and start a wing." They are everywhere—good angels— except we do not recognise them as such. But the tragedy is that there are sometimes bad angels — they are evil persons who pull us down to vice. The world is a battlefield of angels.

• GIRLS' PRESIDENTS' WEEKEND
Since his first professional appearance on July 20, 1960, he has won star ranking on stage, films, cabaret, television and radio, and circled the globe four times on personal appe arance tours which have made him as well known in Melbourne and Bangkok as he is in Manchester and Beckenham (where he recently bought a beautiful new home for his family). C ARDINAL'S ITINERARY
OVER the recent long weekend holiday some thirty-four girls, among them being 23 branch presidents, battled with the heat and to a lesser extent the bush-flies, and yet still managed to enjoy a thoroughly informative and very pleasant training weekend at Marian Lodge, Kalamunda. Comments from many of the girls present are to the effect that it is by far the best weekend held for presidents for some time. Friday evening's "getting-to-know-you" session proved very worthwhile and seemed to pave the way for the happy atmosphere and wonderful spirit that was to continue for the whole weekend. Everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon at the local swimming pool on Saturday and the girls who went for a dip came back refreshed for the evening s ession. Perhaps the newly elected presidents learned more from this session on the "Responsibilities of a President" than the ones who had had some experience behind them in this important job of the lay apostolate. However, it seems that one can never be too "clued-up on the job," as it was often noticeable that all girls were busily writing down new ideas to try themselves and pass on to their leaders. Sunday's retreat also proved to be a great success, many girls saying that it was the first time they had had the opportunity to spend the day thinking and praying about their lives and their work and the people with whom they came in contact with daily. One of the highlights of the weekend was the talk and discussion by Father Russell, Director of the Catholic Marriage Guidance, and a Catholic doctor—the subject being the "Facts of Life," which included love and sex, abortion, and birth control Monday morning provided the second highlight of the weekend, a talk and discussion on Ecumenism by Father O'Malley. The weekend concluded on Monday evening with a general council meeting and election of an Executive for 1966. • CARDINAL CARDIJN'S VISIT MOST of the preparations for the Cardinal's visit are well in hand and to round off some of the advertising the local Y.C.W. branches will be handing out pamphlets and selling souvenir booklets after the parish Masses over the next two weeks. In an extract from one of his talks, Cardinal Cardijn said this about the Y.C.W.: "There must be a workers' movement which will help it to accomplish its mission. Millions of workers all over the world, left to themselves in the face of the terrific organisation of industry and commerce, are absolutely powerless. The Pope has often said to me, I ' can write encyclical letters, but I can neither spread them nor make people live up to these teachings in their workshops. I cannot do it, nor can the bishops and priests, To do that, workers are needed who are apostles.' TIME is the one thing we all possess.
Our success and happiness depend upon what we make of it. Mrs. Stella Carmody, of Salisbury Street, Leederville, has so many interests and leads such a full life that one can say she has made good use of her time. Although Mrs. Carmody was born at Guildford, she spent all her childhood in the c ountry, moving to Perth when she was 14. At the age of 17 she started her training as a nurse at the Royal Perth Hospital, but was married before she completed her training. "There are two main channels in my life," said Mrs. Carmody, "music and the Franciscan Tertiary. All my activities stem from these two interests." Mrs. Carmody holds L.R.S.M. for teaching and performing. She has been playing the organ at St. Mary's, Leederville, for 23 years. She is a member of the Royal School of Music Club. She has held all offices of the club, and is now president for the second term. She teaches music and singing privately. It was in 1926 that Mrs. Carmody became a convert to Catholicism, and in 1932 she became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. This order was to become a great influence in her life.

"It was of great value to me," she said. "It is something you take on for life. I would say it leads to a perfectly balanced way of life. It is the perfect liaison between the nonCatholic and the Catholic. It also holds the key to the great reforms or fuller Christianity envisaged by the Pope and the Ecumenical The Franciscan Social Club was founded in 1940. Mrs. Carmody was one of the foundation members. It was formed specifically to c o-ordinate a basic belief between Christians. Meetings are held monthly and social gatherings held regularly. Through the Third Order of St. Francis, the Franciscan Mission Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, in Hedron, Queensland, appointed Mrs. Carmody their promoter. This was in 1964. They have a mission in New Guinea, and these Sisters are being assisted from Western Australia. The Sisters are hoping to form an establishment here in the future. The National Council of Women is another of Mrs. Carmody's interests. She is one of the delegates representing the Franciscan Club. All women's organisations are represented, and Mrs. Carmody is the immediate past president of the National Council of Women. In 1964 she was elected to be the Australian Convenor of Arts and Letters for the Federal body. In October, 1954, Mrs. Carmody was made a Justice of the Peace. As a Justice of the Peace, she serves on the Married Persons Relief Court. "Women are beginning to play a very important part in the future of Australia," she said. And being in the position to view happenings from a national point of view, Mrs. S tella Carmody should be a good judge. •••••••••

CHRISTIAN WORKS OF CHARITY AND THE MISSIONS "THAT Christian Works of Charity May Witness to the Truth of the
Gospel." Such was the Mission Intention of the Apostleship of Prayer for the month of January. Social work and care for the material welfare of the people cannot, of course, be the primary concern for the heralds of the Gospel. Their fundamental, most important and irreplaceable task in bringing men to Christ is to carry out the missionary command given to them by Our Lord, "to proclaim the Gospel (Mt. XVI, 16). There is noth-
ing that can take the place of direct evangelisation. Nevertheless under certain circumstances, especially when people live under conditions unworthy of human dignity, works of charity are of extra-
ordinary significance, since it is
precisely through them that the
hearts of the poor and the underprivileged in mission lands are opened to the love of God. By giving temporal help we give witness to the love that we must bear to suffering humanity. This is a love to which we are obliged by Our Lord Who said: "I have compassion on the multitude" (Mt. 15, 32), and Who taught His Apostles not only by word but also by deed.
SOME three years ago in the town
of San Antonio, Columban missionaries started a Praesidium of the Legion of Mary in the local prison. It was worked along quietly and gradually the authorities have come to appreciate the influence that it has on the prisoners. In the beginning, some of the men of the parish went into the prison to conduct meetings. Entertainments have been provided and even some of the women Legionaries have been allowed to attend. But the most successful step forward happened a few months ago.
The prisoner who is president of the group was given permission to attend a Curia meeting in the parish. He was accompanied by a guard in civilian clothes, so that he would not be embarrassed. During the meeting the nee e corner gave a good account of himself and impressed the meeting by his exhortation on the need to study the handbook. The guard, after listening to the meeting, said that he would like to know more about the Legion. He invited Father Dunne to come to the area where he lived and start a group among his friends. All the Legionaries were sonwhat stunned by what happened. It is probably the first time a prisoner has converted his guard to anything.

WHAT is the spirit of poverty? For us, poverty is economic. We make it seem that only the rich can have the spirit of poverty. Zacchaeus is our saint in the Gospel because, being very rich, he gave half of his goods to the poor. The spirit of poverty for us is something mathematical, like a tithing, a measuring out, something out of the barrel, so many trickles from the cask. Even the word "charity" means to us "alms" or "sacrifices."
BUT this is not really the spirit of poverty. Take the parable of the Prodigal Son. He became ecnomically poor when he lost his money and sunk so low that he became a tender of swine. But he became poor in spirit when he returned home in rags, trusting in the goodness of his father. The elder brother who remained home lacked poverty of spirit as much as his brother who ran away. Though he had plenty to divide, he refused to share the fatted calf with the returned beggar.
WHAT then is the spirit of pov-
erty? It has nothing to do with money. It starts with this proposition—God is our riches. He who
leaves God becomes poor. That is why the prodigal who left home with his rich inheritance, though economically rich, was spiritually poor. The one thing that keeps us from being spiritually rich is our riches. Our Blessed Lady said that her Son would send the rich away empty. St. Paul added about the early Christians: "We have nothing to bless ourselves with, yet we bless many others with true riches. We are penniless, yet in reality we have everything worth having."

Hence a priest who makes himself available to every broken-hearted
person who comes knocking at his door is poor in spirit; an opera singer, an actor, a comedian who never refuse to give their talents to benefit the poor, all are poor in spirit. The lepers who trust in God for their daily bread are poor
in spirit. Poverty of spirit has nothing to do with how much money we give. Our Lord Who watched those who gave in the Temple said that the woman who
gave her last two coins, gave more than anyone else. Why? Because He measures not by what we give, but by what we have left. Every emptying makes room for Him and gives us the chance to replace the riches we cannot take with us with the only riches that endure.
HERE is one way to become poor of spirit. Make a will, leaving everything to the Holy Father, who will give all of it to the poor of the world and the Missions within the year of your death. This is the great advantage of giving to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Holy Father's fund for the poor of the entire world. You might not be able to give to all, but you can give to him who aids all.
