Asian Educators Meet Christian Unity Body Will Be Permanent A MEETING of 18 ^ top Catholic educators representing ten Asian countries has called for "State financial subsidies to parents" who desire a Catholic education for their children.
ROPE PAUL VI has set up a new central commission and five other postCouncil commissions to carry out the decrees of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council.
In a declaration issued at the end of the conference. the Asian educators made the following conclusions and recommendations:

THE hierarchies of England, Scotland and Ireland have reached substantial agreement on a common Engl ish text for the celebration of Mass. It is expected that the three groups of bishops will give final approval of the text towards the end of 1966, after which it will be in use throughout the British Isles.
Archbishop George Dwyer of Birmingham, chairman of the national liturgical commission, said a common version of the Mass was necessary because of the constant interchange of populations among England, Ireland and -Scotland. • NOT FINAL

He said that the new version of the Mass will not be final. It will be replaced in about three years by a version currently being prepared by liturgical experts from 10 major English-speaking countries. The Archbishop praised the translation of the Holy Week liturgy prepared by the English-Welsh liturgical commission, and approved by the hierarchy for use next year and the two following years. He said the Holy Week liturgy was a "very fine translation" and would serve as a useful basis for further experiment and discussion. Pope's Message Of Sympathy
In response to this and °the:aspects of the "new morality," an article appeared in a recent issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. It was written by Dr. Max Levin, the well-known New York psychiatrist and neurologist. He says in part: "Human nature being what it is, an appeal to
youngsters on moral grounds will often be rejected out of hand. They should be taught that pre-marital intercourse is risky and undesirable, not merely on moral grounds, but because it is a blunder. There are sound medical arguments for chastity." He states that the statistical studies of sex, such as the famous Kinsey report, are highly overrated. Answers given in a questionnaire are in many cases worthless. People give false answers either deliberately or out of shame or ignorance. As someone once said, the counting of noses does not give much understanding of the purpose and function of the nose. Psychiatry, on the other hand, offers an intensive study of a relatively small number of people. Its conclusions probably have more validity as far as a deeper understanding of the nature of human sexuality is concerned. The statistical approach merely tells what people are doing.
DOCTOR LEVIN answers the old argument that experience is the best teacher or you don't buy a shoe until you have tried it on. He says: "Practice will make one a better pianist or tennis player. but this principle does not apply to marital satisfaction." Success in marriage is not a matter of techniques but of attitudes. It is a relationship in love between two persons, not just two bodies. The man and wife must live for each other. The emphasis must be on giving. For a man to pressure his girlfriend into pre-marital sex relations is to raise a question in her mind as to whether he really loves her or himself. On the other hand. "by restraining himself, he will be giving her the strongest demonstration of his devotion, and she will know without being told that his restraint is dictated by his paramount concern for her welfare and peace of mind."
IN a message of sympathy to the Indian People on the death of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Pope Paul VI recalled the Premier's "many kindnesses to us during our visit to India" in 1964. The telegram was sent in English to President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan of India. It read: "Profoundly saddened by the sudden death of La! Bahadur Shastri during his mission of pacification and with undying memories of his many kindnesses to us during our visit to India. we offer Your Excellency and the beloved Indian people our deep sympathy and prayers for consolation and peace." Shastri died of a heart attack in Tashkent. U.S.S.R.. where he had earlier on the day of his death signed an agreement with President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan to settle peacefully the differences between India and its neighbour that led to open warfare over Kashmir.
ALTAR OF PEACE In India, Archbishop Joseph Attipetty of Verapoly. president of the Kerala State Catholic Bishops' Conference, said the Premier had offered his life "on the altar of peace.- He noted Shastri's humility and faith in God and praised his achievements in his 18 months as head of the Indian government. Malabar -Rite Archbishop Joseph Parecattil of Ernakulam also lauded Shastri as a great worker for peace. Valerian Cardinal Gracias of Bombay paid tribute to the Prime Minister's work for peace. He said India's Catholic community was especially grateful to him for the part he and his go‘ernment played on the occasion of the 1964 international Eucharistic Congress in Bombay and Pope Paul's visit there.

Are You Lonesome Tonight —Elvis Presley. This is the Toys' follow-up to their smash hit "A Lovers' Concerto," which topped hit parades all over the world. The first time I heard this disc I hated it and hoped never to hear it again. It was Top Popper Johnny Young who, through his insistence that this was a gear sound and playing it to me over and over again, that I finally got to the stage where I could not stop humming the tune. Now I am able to say in all honesty that I think this is a fab disc. It is based on a classical piece (maybe that's why J.Y. likes it!) as was their first disc, but it could not be said to be like the other disc in any way. As with me, I am sure this is a disc that will grow on you—when it does, you will be nuts about it. • SHE'S JUST MY STYLE/I WON'T MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN. Gary Lewis. Liberty, 10/-. This is the third in a string of hits for the talented young son of comedian Jerry Lewis. Although they have been far larger hits in America than over here, they were nevertheless quite good sellers in Perth. I am not particularly keen on his discs, in fact, I find them particularly repetitive and uninteresting. This one is only slightly better than the other two, but I suppose that given the air play it is sure to be getting it will climb our local charts. I think one of the main things lacking in this artist's records is originality—even Gary Lewis' gimmick of using two bass drums has been done by Louis Belson for over twenty years.

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT. — Rienzie Rupasinghe the newly elected International President of the Y.C.W., will arrive in Perth on February 4. Rienzie, who is in his late twenties, was born in Ceylon. He commenced work as a clerk and early in his career he became interested and active in the Clerks' Union. Later he was appointed Y.C.W. full-time worker in Ceylon and eventually became the Itinerant Secretary on the International Executive. In this position he travelled extensively throughout Asia co-ordinating the activities of the Y.C.W. At the Third International Council held last November in Bangkok, Thailand, he was elected International President, the first Asian to attain the position. At St. Thomas More College, Crawley, during the presidents' week, Rienzie will speak on the formation of young workers in the training that the Y.C.W. gives to them in preparation for their role in the lay apostolate. He will also visit chaplains and the Bunbury Y.C.W. during his stay in Western Australia. SUMMER BASKETBALL. — The qualifying matches of the basketball competition are over and the finals have now commenced. Those teams which have reached the finals have played hard and everyone is urged to go along to Perry Lakes on Tuesdays and Thursdays to support their teams. It is encouraging to play before a packed stadium and the players deserve the cheers and support of many. Admirable organisation by the Sports Committee and a fine spirit of sportsmanship have made this season's competition a valuable service of the Y.C.W. BRANCH ACTIVITIES.—Ten-pin bowling is still proving an excellent means of entertainment for groups. The Morley Y.C.W. held an evening last Saturday at which 30 young people attended. Her work is full of interest as she meets people from all walks of life. Last year she was invited to Albany as a guest of the Trade and Industries Fair to be shown all the tourist attractions of Albany. "I was so surprised," she said. "Albany is so full of natural beauty. It has a wonderful harbour. In fact, it is fabulous and has everything that a tourist could wish for." She belongs to the "Shepherds Group," which is composed mainly of Y.C.W. girls. "We visit the Home of the Good Shepherd to bring friendship and understanding to the girls who are there," she said. In 1962 Miss Ligovich became a naturalised Australian citizen. Seeing the large ocean liners come and go does not make her wish to travel. "If the time comes when I can afford to t ravel," she said, "it would be lots of fun. But I believe that a girl should not think of t ravelling until she is at least 21.' A Port Hostess must be able to cope with all kinds of different problems and enquiries. She has to have a pleasant personality. Miss Vanda Ligovich is a young girl who is very f ortunate to have this obliging personality.
