THE ABSENCE OF GOD The only creature in the universe that is not satisfied with himself is man. He wants to be more than man, as every market tends to become a supermarket. What adds to this uneasiness is that when he tries to make himself less than man he becomes ridiculous, which an animal never does. We say to man in his stupid deeds: "Don't act like a monkey." But when we see a monkey doing crazy things, we never say: "Don't act like a thistle." The higher the reaches of which one is capable, the greater the depths to which one can fall. Man alone has the power of self-mutilation and self-destruction, but like the mosaic image of Christ in the dome of St. Sophia., it can never be completely effected. He who was meant to scale mountains can also dig caves, but he still retains the Divine Image.
BEYOND SELF On the positive side, man wants to be more than he is; he attains his true self only when he gets beyond self. When he rebels against God, he makes himself a god. To be a man, one must be a superhuman. When he refuses to ascend and to realise the deep cravings of his soul for Truth and Beauty and Love without satiety, his failures all immediately register themselves in his conscience and even in his subconsciousness. And it could be truly said that Mrs. Elsie Clear, of Oxford Btreet, Leederville, has made every minute of her life useful. Mrs. Clear was born in the country town of Clare in South Australia. In the year 1900 her parents moved to Western Australia and settled at Norseman. "You can imagine, at my age," said Mrs. "I have some wonderful memories of lear, C the Goldfields. I can remember how exciting it was travelling down to Perth by stagecoach. I was to spend the next five years of . my life as a boarder at St. Joseph's Convent, Fremantle." Cne of the highlights of her schooldays was that she won the Trinity Medal for music. This medal was presented to her by Madam Ada Crossley.

A fter she left school her parents decided t o move to Perth, and they lived at Kalamunda. Her father enlisted in the first world war and was killed in 1918.. "About this time," said Mrs. Clear, "I started the first catechism class in Kalamunda. I shall never forget those days. Once a month we held Mass at our house. Catholics w ould walk many miles to attend. The parish priest from Guildford would come to offer Mass. It would be an all-day affair, as most people had walked too many miles to return home directly after Mass." Mrs. Clear taught at the Presentation Convent, Mosman Park, for many years. She also studied singing under Sister St. Alphonsus at St. Brigid's, West Perth, and received her L.R.S.M. degree. She was a soloist with St. Mary's Cathedral choir for 12 years, and t aught music and singing privately. Mrs. Clear has been a war widow since 1928. She has one son and is a proud grandmother of five grandchildren. She belongs to quite a few organisations. One is the Friendly Union of Servicemen's Wives. This organisation was formed in 1915. Inainly to establish an office where members c ould obtain information regarding matters in which they found themselves in difficulty. Mrs. Clear has been secretary -for this union for 36 years. She is also a member (representing the Friendly Union of Servicemen's Wives) of the Repatriation Soldiers' Children Education Board. She was appointed to this board in 1954. The Wooroloo Welfare Fund is another group that interests Mrs. Clear. She is vicepresident. Since it was founded in 1921 the fund has supplied the hospital with many needed items. She is a very willing worker for the Red Cross and holds the 20-year Red Cross Service Medal. Mrs. Elsie Clear's memories may go back a long way, but this lady has moved with the times, and because she has, she is a very happy and contented person.

Excess mortar that is squeezed out can be removed with the trowel point.
