HELP IN HIS ROLE THE ACTION of Pope Paul VI in contacting the leaders of nations embroiled in the Vietnam war is no empty gesture. Unless there is a constant appeal which will not be rebuffed by contempt or by political inability then the situation could only worsen. The Holy Father is in the unique position in which he is able to be this constant appealer. I t matters not to him if the Chinese choose to ignore him or sneer at him. There is no national pride to be hurt, only Christian humility to be fostered. This position, however, needs great strength and while Pope Paul VI shows this personal strength in prayer, in steadfastness in pursuing his objective, he needs our help. Draft card burnings, protest marches, self immolations and other provocative forms of witness for peace are personal and ineffectual acts of defiance which antagonise rather than enlighten. Persistent prayer on our part is the way that all Christians can help in the preservation of what at the moment must be a constant search and appeal for what the world has not got.

HE ACCUMULATED WISDOM OF THE HUMAN RACE HAS A L WAYS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THERE WAS SOME KIND OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PEACE OF SOUL AND HEALTH. "A healthy mind in a healthy body," is only an abbreviation of a statement from the Latin poet Juvenal, who wrote in his satires: "Your prayer must be that you may have a sound mind in a sound body." A more modern poet, Francis Thompson, wrote that "holiness is an oil which increases a hundredfold the energies of the body, which is the wick." The Austrians had a proverb: "A sad saint is a sorry sort of saint."

TODAY, however, medicine and psychiatry are combining to prove that there is some intrinsic relationship between holiness and health. The French tradition of medicine has always believed in a long interrogation of the patient in order to view the drama of his human life. Recently there has been published a treatise by the well-known Swiss psychiatrist, Dr. Paul Tournier. entitled "The Healing of Persons," which is a contribution to a synthesis of modern psychology and the Christian faith. He holds that the physical problems of a person's life often correspond to mental problems and both of these, in

turn, to spiritual problems. There is no physical reform possible without moral reform. And there is no moral reform without a spiritual renewal. This boils down to saying that behaviour and a mode of life is a very important factor in determining health. Symptoms, he holds, may be exaggerated forms of normal defence reactions; they are abnormal as far as disease is concerned, but they may be normal as far as the defehsive reaction is concerned.

A CONFIRMATION of this idea comes

from Dr. Swain of Boston, who wrote of 270 cases in which the patient was cured on being freed from fear, worry and resentment. His conclusion was that 60 per cent of arthritis cases had their origin in moral conflict. Everyone is familiar with the conclusion of Dr. K. A. Menninger, who stresses the influence of the state of mind on the condition of those suffering from high blood pressure. The latter often seems to be a sort of physical expression of a moral hyper-tension which paralyses it. Dr. Alexis Carrell. speaking of the alarming increase in neurosis and psychosis over the last hundred years, states that this increase "can be more dangerous for civilisation than infectious diseases. Mental diseases by themselves are more numerous than all other diseases put togeher." Dr. Tournier holds that "all functional

The advantages and comforts of a good home are unfortunately not available to all. In Perth there are young people seeking accommodation. These are boys and girls

from the country in search of better employment, on working holidays, or young people from orphanages. To help these the Y.C.W. has organised

an accommodation service and keeps a list of places available. As can be expected this list is not endless and boys and girls are anxiously waiting for a congenial home. The Y.C.W. appeals to all parents to assist in this worthwhile service. Perhaps you have a room available in your home or know of people willing to take in a young person. If you do, please contact the Y.C.W. office on 23-4546. The, co-operation and help that you, the parents can give will greatly encourage the Y.C.W. in its workings with youth.

The Year Ahead: 1966 promises to be an exciting and stimulating year for the Y.C.W. Already three delegates from New Zealand passed through Perth last week on their way home from the International Council in Bangkok. They were much impressed with the Council and were thankful for having been able to participate in such a wonderful and moving event. In February, Perth is to be honoured by a visit from the founder of the Y.C.W., Cardinal Cardijn. Preceding him by a few days will be Rienzie Rupasinghe from Ceylon, the newly elected International President of the Movement. In April, the Australian National President, Frank Sheehan, will spend four weeks in Perth visiting branches both here and in the country, talking to chaplains and helping us with his experience and knowledge of the achievements and problems of youth. Later in the year it is hoped to organise a social weekend for all leaders. The Spring Ball and the State Conference will also be major functions in the year. It is with confidence that the Y.C.W. faces the New Year. To expand, to help and to deepen the understanding of the Movement are but few of the tasks to be accomplished

Women In * By EDITH MeNAMARA A VISIT to the Spastic Welfare Centre at Mount Lawley will make one aware of the marvelous work that is being done for the spastic children in this State. Each year a quest is conducted to raise money for the Centre. Each candidate and her committee work hard to raise as much money as possible. This year's winner (1965) of the quest was Miss Jennifer Brophy (21), of Marita Avenue, Nedlands.

BRANCH NOTES Bridge and rummy afternoon at All Saints Centre, Thursday, January 13, at 2 p.m. The members of Inglewood-Bedford branch would like Mrs. Mallendywe, who is sick in hospital, to know they are all thinking of her and send their best wishes; the same to Mrs. Townsend, who; although still in hospital is making good progress and should soon be about again. One of the activities of the League is the serving of teas in the downstairs rooms, each day of the week, except on public holidays. Perhaps there.are readers who are not aware of this hence we would like it known that tea or coffee with a biscuit is available, or just the liquid refreshment if patrons care to have their own lunch.

When a young woman enters a quest such as this," said Miss Brophy, "it makes her realise just how much finance is needed to continue the work at the Spastic Centre." A schoolteacher, Miss Brophy was educated at Loreto Convent and the Teachers' Tra:ning College at Claremont. She applied to be posted to Derby to teach, as she was very interested to see the development that is now taking place in the North. She considers that a person can only really know people and places by living and working amongst them. "The North is very impressive." said. Miss Brophy. "It is exciting, and it is thrilling to be part of it." Miss Brophy recalled a visit to the Kalumburu Mission conducted by the Benedictines. The mission lies at the mouth of the King Leopold River. "It is the most fascinating place," she said. "It is really a station, and is fully supporting. It is amusing to hear little native children speaking with a Spanish accent." Sport plays an important role in the life o f Miss Brophy. She swims, plays tennis and basketball. Athletics have always interested her. She was open champion runner of her school for seven years and also played in the Slazenger Cup team. Miss Brophy leaves on January 28 for England and Europe, calling into all the Australian capital cities on her way. This trip is part of her prize for winning the "Miss West Australian" crown. She will be travelling with Miss South Australia (Miss C. Haby) and a South Australian chaperon. "I knew very little about the work at the Spastic Centre." said Miss Brophy," but fter I was- approached by a representative from the Spastic Centre I became very interested. It is wonderful to see how contented the children are, and how carefully they are being trained to follow whatever natural talents they may possess. A lot of progress has been made in regard to employment when these children become adults. When Miss Jennifer Brophy returns to Perth in four months time, she, will reiitne her teaching career at the Scarborough. High School. One feels certain she will be a good ambassador for Western Australia. and DeCially for the North.

They have had plenty of good beach weather for a It it try-out. Be careful though, especially with the surf boards that you use them wisely. Don't go too far away from others because they are very light and drift easily. Also don't forget to be considerate of other people using the beach. Some use their surfboards as a battering ram and have no manners about them at all. An interesting letter came from Michael Fernando (13) from the St. Francis Xavier Mission, Bathurst Island, via Darwin, N.T. There are more than 70 boys at the Mission. They would be pleased to start up correspondence with you I am sure. How about some of you starting off during the holidays? Michael is in grade 4.

They were the last of the foreign Sister doctors to leave the country under the Burmese "way to socialism."
