wheel, the lightest touch of the finger can impress it with any pattern he desires; when it it is taken off and hardened, nothing will change the shape of the vase but smashing it to fragments. Lord Byron, looking back on his life of wrong choices, said: "I have not had ,ten happy days."

towards Truth and Goodness and Love of neighbour; the other is to have our lives determined from without by a rabble of confusion. It is not enough, however, to know an ideal. One must be prepared to serve it at any cost. Principles are of little value unless we are prepared to live in accordance with them. The past is past, the future is God's, the present alone is ours. The present, however, is not a leeting moment, but one pregnant with As sacredness and infinite value. Emerson said: "The present hour is the decisive hour and every day is doomsday." The poet Whittier expressed it: The Present, the Present is all thou hast For thy sure possessing; Like the patriarch's angel hold it fast 'Til it gives its blessing Then of what is to tie, and of what is done, Why queriest thou? The past and the time to be are one, And both are Now."

Lord Chesterfield declared: "I have been the whole round of pleasure, and I am disgusted." Madame de Beauvoir, in her recent autobiography, states that she has sounded all of the pleasures of life and concludes: "I have been gypped by life." Freedom of choice is too frequently a beautiful and dangerous gift which like a sword in the hands of a child injures it. But we cannot divest ourselves of our responsibility, not even by calling sin a complex. Neutrality and corn. promise are impossible in life. If God be not the Object of adoration, then any occupant of the throne must be considered as His enemy. Dagon must fall from his pedestal when the ark of God's presence enters the chamber of the heart. Both God and mammon cannot be served. Once religion is chosen, then it modifies the character of every action, transforming it into an offering laid upon the altar to the glory of God. All that we have and are, we send to the mint and receive it back stamped with the Divine Image and fashioned according to His desire.

EIE is recognised at the greatest philosopher the Church has ever known. Despite his distance from us in time and space many of the things he wrote are. still pertinent to our age and our culture. Human nature and the basic right of man which flow from that nature are the same today as they were in his time. For example, he states that among these fundamental rights of man are the rights to food, to clothing, to shelter and to recreation (sic). The right to food is obvious. For his physical development and health a human being needs the proper nutritional diet. Most readers of this column take this right so for granted that they rarely think about it in such terms. The food bills at the end of a week or a month are sufficient reminders that the cost of living is The not as low as it might be. demands of a growing family probably eliminate the frequent appearance of such things as steak and lobsters, but most such families are able to afford good food in adequate quantity. However, there are millions of other human beings who have the same right to food as we have and yet in fact are denied the opportunity to feed themselves. Their deprivation may be due to economic or cultural reasons or to overpopulation in relation to inadequate resources. But the fact of the matter is that their basic human right is being violated. If they can't help themselves, then there is an obligation in justice binding those of us who can help them to do so. If this means expanding our agricultural production for temporary relief, this should be done. If it means taking tong-range measures to help them to help themselves, then these, too, should be taken. A Christian conscience insists that we are our brothers' keepers.

SHELTER

The right to shelter has several implications. This means decent housing in which a family is not only protected from the elements of nature, but also space enough for a family to grow and develop in a human way. It would include the basic necessities such as heat, water and light of some kind. Again, although most of us are not living in luxurious surroundings, we do live in dignity and decency. Yet there are millions of people around the world who for one reason or another are being

denied this right. They are living in shacks surrounded by filth and in the company of rats and lice and bugs. Their human misery cannot Ii!lp but erupt in violence. If they have a right to adequate shelter, then the resources of the affluent society must be refocused to supply it to them.

With a few deft strokes a delicate crystal glass is marked ready for cutting at the Stourbridge, England, works of Stuart Crystal Ltd. Using these lines as guides, skilled craftsmen will cut the gleaming facets which are the hallmark of fine British cut glass. Some 40 per cent of the works' production is exported, helping to fill the demand for luxury goods in more than 20 overseas countries including Australia.

She has worked at the Church Office, Victoria Square, for the past seven years. For many years Miss Collopy played basketball with the Y.C.W. Girls, and still retains a great interest in the :sport. DEAR BOYS AND GIRLS

How did you all enjoy your Christmas? Most of you are probably still making the most of your presents. Look after them and don't forget to spare a thought for the people who gave them to you. A special word of thanks now for all those junior readers who sent me Christmas cards and best wishes during the last few weeks. Now that 1965 has drawn to a c lose I would like to thank you all for the competition entries and letters you have sent in over the past twelve months. I think we have had quite a good year and was particularly pleased to see the large number of new members each week. At this time of the year we usually make a number of New Year resolutions. If you make any, and we all should, then take your time about it. Think back on the past year and pick out one or two things which you think you should have or have not done. They needn't be big resolutions, just ones you know that with a little effort you will be able to keep. Happy New Year and God bless you all, BROTHER JUNIPER
