POPE AT HISTORIC UNITY SERVICE By Father Placid Jordan, O.S.B.

"A GREAT stretch of the road remains to be brought behind us, but we have begun to love one another." Such was the essence of the message Pope Paul VI gave to the 65 delegate -observers of non-Catholic churches to the ecumenical council when he joined with them in an unprecedented formal service invoking Christian unity. service was held Christians could hardly would like to have you THE almost on the eve of be overestimated. ADDRESSED TO ALL MEN

S

0 MUCH OF THE COUNCIL'S SUCCESS IS NOW GOING TO DEPEND ON THE CHURCH WHERE WE ARE.

It would have been useless for the four constitutions, nine decrees and three declarations to have been published if the only one that is going to have notice taken of it is the Constitution on the Liturgy. In time, the sixteen documents will be available to all in their own language and it will be apparent that the Council has worked not only for the good of the Church. It has addressed itself to the world. In various fields, domestic, social-economic and international, the Church has tried to give a balanced judgment of the situations and problems facing people in our world. The sincere attempt to deduce general principles for the solution of these problems in accord with the moral law has been evident from the debates and their conclusions. How much the modern world is going to take notice of the voice of the Church will depend so much on the individual and the group, be it national, diocesan or parish. The whim of the individual is not the yardstick by which these conciliar statements are or are not to be effected. Guided by the often broad brush of Council statements, the Catholic can show to the world that what he seeks is good and that by the example of him seeking that good others will be influenced to seek it too. This is not just a matter of strict religious direction by those who accept God, Christ's Redemption and sanctification through the Holy 'Sprit. It is for all who live in a world which has problems suffered by all and to be o vercome by all. An excellent start has been made. In the recent study days for the clergy, it was ) bvious by the large and voluntary attendance of the priests of the diocese that the importance of the knowledge of the constitution was appreciated. Already also, groups of the laity have started reading and discussing. From these the words that were spoken in the Council will be shown to have concrete meaning. YOUR MORLEY CHEMIST

atmosphere of fear. There was no place at home to study even if you were interested and had been taught how to read. Not only had that not been done or encouraged . . . you could not even talk. You could of course mumble a few words, but for you to put a sentence together or try to express your own feelings and thoughts—well, no one was interested, so why bother?

She is already making more money than you and probably will continue to do so. There was nothing much except the open to a guy like you dirty, menial, servile jobs which paid little and lasted only a 'short time. Where do you go from here? The Young Christian Workers' (Girls) Movement is a youth organisation mainly worked on a parish basis. Each parish has five or six young people who are interested and willing to take responsibility of a lay apostle. The young people are trained as leaders. Miss Pauline Knight, of Alderbury Street, Floreat Park, has been a member of the Y.C.W. for 12 years. For the last two years she has been a full-time worker for the movement. For seven years Miss Knight was the treasurer of the Perth Diocese and is now the secretary. She is also one of the two representatives from the Y.C.W. to the Associated Youth Committee. The A.Y.C. is comprised of the 44 major youth groups in Perth. The meetings are held monthly, and two delegates from each organisation attend. Miss Knight gives a report on the Y.C.W. activities and assists in the functions organised by the committee. She is also a member of the A.Y.C. executive. Miss Knight was emphatic that the Y.C.W. is a good organisation for girls leaving school to join. It is an opportunity for a young girl to meet and make new friends. Basketball and tennis are popular. In the 1965 season, the Perth Diocese had 77 basketball teams participating in the competition, with 600 girls taking part. Dances are held at different parishes. Many other interests, too, which would help a young girl leaving school. About eight years ago, Miss Knight became interested in budgerigars and decided to breed them. Today she has sixty of these beautiful little birds in a large aviary in the back garden of her parents' home. Miss Knight plays squash once a week dur. ing both summer and winter months. This is the only sport she has time to play —although follower through the winter she is a devoted of her favourite football team. TALKIN G ROYAL CORAL FOR CUP CRICKET

THE bookmakers would probably rather forget that six favourites won at Ascot last Saturday, along with one joint favourite, but the day was memorable for Royal Coral's convincing win in the main event of the day, the Ascot Cup, run over a mile and a half. READERS

Now you are on holidays and the hot weather is here you will most l ikely be going to the beach quite a bit. A lways be very careful when you go swimming and make sure there are always some adults around. Never swim in very deep water, even if you consider yourself a good swimmer. Always swim at a recognised beach, whether at the ocean or the r iver. I f you can't swim I would suggest that you see your parents about going to the swimming classes at various localities in the metropolitan a rea. These are held in January and ' provide a good opportunity for children to learn to swim the correct way. I would now l ike to thank those j unior readers who have sent me C hristmas cards. It is good to hear f rom you every now and then and I hope that I wil l be receiving plenty of letters from you all during the holidays. God bless you all,
