POPE PAUL VI announced that the Church will hold a six-month jubilee or "Little Holy Year" to spread the spirit of the Ecumenical Council throughout the world, The period of jubilee will be from December 8, 1965, the day on which the Council ends, to May 29,1966 (Pentecost Sun_ day).
The Pope said that the purpose of the Jubilee was "to afford preachers an opportunity to spread the message of truth and of charity, the message proclaimed by the Counci l itself, and to stimulate in the faithful their sense of union around the pastors of their own dioceses."

Jubilees lasting for 12 months ( "Holy Years") have been held at 25-year intervals since the fifteenth century. Special Jubilees of shorter duration, l ike the one called by Pope Paul, mark special occasions and do not come at any set interval. The last Holy Year was in 1950. The last special Jubilee, in 1929, marked the fiftieth anniversary of Pope Pius XI's ordination to the priesthood.

HEN THE CURTAIN FINALLY FALLS ON DECEMBER 8 ON THE LAST AND BUSIEST SESSION OF VATICAN COUNCIL II, THE GREAT WORK WILL THEN COMMENCE.
Not that the four sessions of the Council have not been in themselves great works. It has been a marvel of study, administration and evidence of the vitality of the Church that so much has been done. But it is one thing to publish decrees. It is another to implement them and continue the work of the Council. There has been no nook or cranny of the Church left untouched in the consideration of he Council Fathers. Often done in the glare of publicity from the world's press, considerations have in some places been taken for conclusions, and hence there has on occasions been confusion. Yet with the publication of the Decrees and Constitutions the major confusions should melt away. It would be fair to say that on a comparison no Council in the history of the Church has accomplished such a breakthrough into an era so far-reaching. This not only applies to relations with other r eligious bodies, but with the world and contemporary society. The renewal of the Church now rests on the solid foundation formally established by conciliar decrees. These must now receive practical application to the life of the Church. This is where the words of Pope Paul have their force when he said that the Council is not an end in itself, but a beginning of renewal. This renewal can only come from an understanding and this understanding will come only from study Of the decrees and consistently putting them into practice. In this respect the accomplishments of the Council Fathers in their four years of intensive work is a challenge to the rest of the Church. Once official texts are available, there should be a rising to this challenge by clergy, Religious and laity to read and study what these documents say. For it is in the whole Church that they must be effected and effective. Not in a just a small group of local or national "periti." To put this new spiritual climate which has asserted itself in the Church in virtually every field of human endeavour is going to be no mean task. With prayer, wise guidance and diligent study it can be achieved. It is obvious that these changes cannot come overnight. They will take time and the t ransformation will appear to some slow and partial. There is, however, an inspiring firmness in words which the Holy Father has used in this context and no one can doubt his determination to carry out the auspicious beginning of the transformation to a good end. We should all have that same firmness of determination. The call for all to be united with their c ommon Father in prayer at the end of the Council is of paramount importance. The Council itself has been the constant object of t he prayer of the Church through all its deliberations. It is fitting that the begnining of the reneawl should receive the same petition for God's blessing.
THE subject of permitting therapeutic abortion is one that will be emotionally charged in most of its discussion. The trend today in our supposedly Christian society is to take the easy way out no matter how immoral. in this case the talk will be always on
the possible danger to the mother, the possible danger of defective children. Few words will be said of the certain right to live of the human being in the mother's womb. This life is what is protected by
the moral law. It would be well at the outset to define the terms. Abortion is the expulsion of a non-viable foetus from the womb o f the mother. It may be accidental, as in the case of a miscarriage or artificial, that is directly or indirectly caused by the action of a person. There is no question of murder This in the accidental abortion. occurs without the intention of any agent and without causative action by any agent.
Direct artificial abortion is cornMitted when the non-viable foetus, the living being which cannot live outside the womb, is intentionally removed from the womb at any time during the pregnancy. A therapeutic abortion for the direct purpose of expelling a nonviable foetus is never permissible. The moral evil in the case is the deliberate extinction of an unoffending life. The discussion will more than likely start off with examples of extreme cases, and (as sad experience proves) if it is condoned in our civil law, it will result in a too-facile recourse to abortions and foeticides on a large scale.

N the whole literature of the world, no one probably ever described the gentleness of character comparable to the Hebrew prophet who spoke of Christ in these words: "The bruised reed He shall not break, and the smoking flax He will not quench."
The reed was a plant with a hollow stem which grew up by the sides of lakes or rivers. Among all the things that grow, hardly anything was a better symbol of what was weak, fragile and brittle. Wild beasts trampled on it without deigning to eat it. "A reed shaken by the wind" was a metaphor employed to indicate human weakness and instaShepherds would sometimes bility. pick up a reed, punch a few holes in it and pipe a tune. When finally the reed was cracked or bruised in any way, the shepherd would throw it away.
THE smoking flax, on the other hand, was used as a wick to light an oil lamp or a candle. It was sometimes dipped in the oil with the result that the wick sent forth a weak, smoky, disagreeable light soon to

subside into darkness, and often leaving a disagreeable stench. Once used, it was thrown to the ground to quickly smoulder and die. Both of these figures were used to describe the compassion of Christ for the weak, bruised reeds like Mary Magdalene, and the burning flax like a Saul of Tarsus. Coming into a world which would break the bruised reed and quench the smoking flax, Christ came to teach us that even that broken reed, which was thrown as worthless on the ground, He would pick for there still might be one note left with which to pipe a tune. He loves and employs and fans to a bright and glowing flame the dimly burning human wicks. He changes them into lamps that shine, beacon fires that. warm and torches that hand on His message to generations and generations.

reed" has an injury which is not complete. "The smoking flax," on the other hand, has already some spark in it. In the first instance, there is the beginning of evil which may be averted; in the other, the beginnings of an incipient and incomplete good. It is only the Divine Master Who can see in apparent worthlessness a spark that may be fanned into a flame. He will increase its life because there is always the spark of good within every human heart. Others may regard it as of small service or of none, but in any case, something rather unpleasant. Here is the mark of hopefulness even for those who discarded themselves at having lost the spark of life. The mark of modern man is one of despair. In previous generations men were afraid of death. Today they are afraid of life. Hence, the desire for escape from the responsibilities of life either through the dulling of consciousness or a rapid pace which gives one no time for thought.

Who made man, is hope. Where there is room to hope something, there is room to hope all things. The sinner that is out of hope is lost. Misery and fear and alarm very often make hearts shut themselves up in the fevered and brooding rage of fear.
But here is Mercy and a Hope which does not receive sinners coldly, or with a hasty, unsparing tongue, but breathes His Spirit upon the weak and the rejected; Who has to draw all things to Himself. In His vision, there is no man so bruised as to be broken; no man so spent that he cannot be a light.
Grant that there are many things that can put out the spent flax, such as strong
passions, vanities, lust, greed and even a prosperity which dims the spirit, it is never to be forgotten that the flax is
God's own, the light is God's own, the oil is God's own and He will dress it.
It has often been said that Christianity is a failure. It is better to say that Christianity deals wtih failures, and to affirm that the old days, the former days were better than these. Of course, many look back in memory, and are moved to tears when once they saw "all things apparelled in celestial light, the glory and the freshness of a dream.-

AN the weekend of December 11 and 12, the
Y.C.W. boys' and girls' organisations will hold their annual State Conferences, the boys at St. Mary's Hall, Leederville, and the girls at the Highgate Hall. Both conferences will be opened by Monsignor E. Sullivan, former Y.C.W. Diocesan Chaplain and now parish priest of West Perth. Delegates from all metropolitan and country branches will be present and papers on such subjects as the Y.C.W. in the Parish, Extension of the Y.C.W., Christian Judgment, and Company-Keeping in the life of the young worker will be submitted for discussion. Both conferences will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Saturday and from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Sunday. On the Saturday night there will be a dance in the Highgate Hall and all young people are invited to attend. The State Conference is an important fun_. tion inithe Y.C.W. year and is representative of the Y.C.W. as a militant organisation dedicated to bringing Christ's life and teachings into the lives of young workers. • JOIN THE Y.C.W. THE last three weeks has been a time of examinations, but now for many they are over and the pressure is off. But the Y.C.W. cannot relax. With so many pressures on young people it needs to keep working to help them lead their lives as Christ wants. The task is a big one, but a rewarding one. In the Y.C.W. a person can give help, friendship and understanding and all who have now finished their studies and are not in the Y.C.W. are asked to join. The Movement needs you to help in its work. One person through joining can open up a new field of influence on young people and the more who join, the bigger the field. ounce of imagination, discipline and patience. Considering that the telephone rang most of the time during the interview, it was evident that Miss Colleen Clifford, Directress of the Guild Theatre, was blessed with plenty of patience.
Born in Somerset, England, Miss Clifford only attended school for one year, the rest of her education was under the guidance of governesses. "I was very fortunate," said Miss Clifford, "my mother chose my governesses for their high education capabilities, coming from the Sorbonne, France, or graduates from Oxford or Cambridge. And without any thought that I would become a professional musician or actress, my mother gave me the best music and voice production teachers." As a child she was indeed fortunate to have lived in so many different countries because she learned at any early age to absorb different customs, and it became easy to understand history, the temperaments of the people and the reactions of nations.

Miss Clifford is a much-travelled woman, having lived in Switzerland, Belgium, New Zealand and the South of France. Until she c ame to Perth, she had never lived in one. country more than two years, and now because of family reasons she has settled here. She has appearerd in the West End of London in such productions as "Revivals of the Country Girl," "Guys and Dolls," "Pride of the Regiment," Shakespeare's "Henry V," "Twelfth Night" and many others. Although she loves producing, Miss Clifford r egards her work of training the young and the would-be actor the most important part. Voice production for both singers and speakers is her primary concern. "I am sure," said Miss Clifford, "that the drama festivals, such as the Catholic drama f estival for schoolchildren, is the best and most exciting thing that has happened to the theatre in Perth. Future generations will become theatre-lovers." "At present," she said, "the theatre-going Public is only one per cent." Excitement is running high at the Guild Theatre at this moment. Rehearsals are taking place for the next production, "Three Delights in One,- which sounds delightful for the beginning of the festive season. Miss Colleen Clifford has a wide and varied e xperience in the theatre and has met all the Problems with good humour, zest and technical skill, which she now hands on with the greatest lucidity to whoever cares to profit by it. Dear Boys and Girls, During the last week I heard of seven children in America who are a nxious to have pen-pals in Perth a nd are hoping that some of the junior readers of "The Record" will write to them soon. The children, whose photos, names a nd addresses are printed elsewhere on this page, are all in grade five a nd attend the Sacred Heart Convent in Mi lwaukee, Wisconsin. The reason these children are keen to have pen-pals here is because they a re studying Australia in their social s tudies at school and hope to be able to learn more about Australian children by writing to them.
