THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THE CATHOLIC PARTY INDONESIAN TOLD THE PRESS FOLLOWING A MEETING WITH PRESIDENT SUKARNO THAT THE MASSES OF THE PEOPLE WANT THE PRESIDENT TO DISSOLVE THE INDONESIAN COMMUNIST PARTY.

Franciskus Seda, who besides heading the Catholic party is Minister of Estates in the Sukarno cabinet, said that most Indonesions blame the communists for the attempted coup d'etat of September 30. Seda said it is clear that the masses of the people are demanding suppression both of the communist party and of its various front groups. Council Closing Date

ROPE PAUL has an nounced that the Second Vatican Council will close. on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The closing ceremony is expected to be similar to the one which opened the Council on October 11, 1962, with heads of State invited and no voting or promulgation of conciliar documents. Pope Paul also announced that a formal public vote on whatever documents remain will take place at a solemn ceremony on December 7. It has also been rerorted unofficially that the Pope may take advantage of the Council's final ceremony to announce his decisions on matters he 'has been some pondering for time, consulting the opinions of the national conferences of bishops —a relaxation of the laws of fast and abstinence, a reduction of the number of indulgences, and a relaxation of the Church's laws on mixed marriage.

CHALLENGE TO YOUTH

y

OUTH has been in the news of late in such a way that one could be excused for having misgivings on the calibre of the State's future citizens. Yet there is the other side of the picture which seldom gets reported simply because it is not startling.

This other side is the steady, decent and law-abiding young man and girl who will be leaving school in their thousands throughout the State in a very short time. Because of the publicity highlighting the escapades and delinquency of a few, some tend to brand all youth with the same mark of irresponsibility, lawlessness and downright decadence. Wide experience and the reports of headmasters and headmistresses currently being given at speech nights and prize-givings show that our youths are capable of meeting the challenge of our era. This challenge to youth is a threefold one —spiritual, intellectual and social. To meet it at 16 or 17 years of age is quite a task. It is something that needs careful preparation and continual encouragement. To this end, parents and educators have to bear in mind that true education goes hand in hand with the fashioning of the human person in pursuit of his ultimate end and the good of the society of which he is to be a responsible member. For this to be achieved, the steady co-operation of the educator in the school and the parents in the home is vital. Where this liaison and co-operation are lacking, the seed of delinquency is sown.

New Methods Over recent years this liaison has become New more concentrated and methodical. methods have been introduced which require the parents to take their part in a positive programme with their chosen educators in all spheres of forming the mind, character and capabilities of the boy and girl. This fusing of the message of man's salvation and inherent dignity with human culture so that knowledge of the world is enlightened by eternal truths is necessary for youth to meet the impact of the challenge which will be met on leaving school. A whole new, and in some cases startling. social and economic environment will open before them. It will demonstrate its indifference in a lot of cases to any spiritual value. In more cases than not it will show itseslf to be grimly materialistic and ruthless in its prosescution of its ends. The safeguards of the school are gone and youths' preparation is put to the immediate test. The students' preparation must enable them to make right judgments as to the values put before them. The intellectual and spiritual development will help students meet this impact of forces of economic and social life as it is exercised today. If they have not this formation or not appreciated its value, or there has been no c o-operation between the two who should form them, they will go under. Academic and technical training are ever more in demand, yet in today's world, as ever, it is useless without the formation of character to enable youth to live a complete Christian life, to bear witness to the truth and to help fashion the world that is challenging them. It is a great challenge and one which our youth can and do rise to. UT the real danger in adolescent drinking is that the effect of alcohol in his behaviour is unpredictable. Even one drink can change his personality and becloud his judgment as well as his vision. It can make him argumentative and belligerant and cause him to do t hings which normally would be unthinkable. When drinking is combined with driving, the teenager becomes a menace not only to himself but to society. There have been enough newspaper stories of fatal and nearfatal motor accidents caused by this unhealthy combination to make this point. But of course these tragedies always happen to other peoples' children.

CAUSES? the rapid increase in high WHYschool and college age drink-

ing? One reason is the present affluence of most young people. They have more money to spend on the luxuries of life. The easy availability of liquor and especially of beer, the advertising in the various media of communication which suggest that drinking is part of smart, glamorous adult living, all contribute to the increase. The immediate reason probably

WHAT TO DO? WHAT can be done about it? A great deal will depend on parental attitudes. It must be recognised that drinking is an adult privilege and when it is done in moderation there is nothing wrong with it. It would seem that there are two extremes to be avoided. One is an over -permissiveness or even an encouragement in regard to teenage drinking on the part of parents. These are the type who for the sake of fleeting popularity serve alcoholic drinks at their children's parties. The other extreme is an exaggerated reaction against alcohol in any form. Often this is due to a previous sad experience in the family. Some close relative was brought to ruin through drink. The sorrow, the hurt, the shame of this experience has left such a bias against drink that it is seen as the worst evil in the world. The middle ground can best be achived by a frank discussion with the adolescent as to the meaning of alcohol. A firm policy of never serving drinks to other peoples children should be followed. An occasional glass of wine to their own children on a special family occasion is permissible. Always there is the insistence that this is an adult privilege, since it takes a mature person to use it with discretion.

ALL WILL SHARE CHURCH The Snowy Mountains Authority is to build an inter - denominational church at Talbingo. 20 miles south of Tumut. While the authority will pay for the church, the Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian Churches will combine to design the building. APOLEON HELD THAT THE FATE OF EVERY BATTLE WAS DECIDED IN THE SPACE OF ABOUT FIVE MINUTES.

ALL the manoeuvring all the preparations led up to the strategic moment of crisis. If the leader had vision to take advantage of those few moments the enemies' rout would be complete; if, however, he allowed it to pass, defeat was certain. In one battle, his forces were halted before a bridge over a deep ravine. If the bridge was not crossed, the battle would be lost. The soldiers were afraid to advance upon it inasmuch as it was swept by the fire of Austrian cannon. Napoleon snatched the flag . from the standard-bearer and rushed on to the bridge saying to his men: "Forward to save your General." The effect Upon the soldiers was electric and in that five minutes the battle was decided.

not so much decided by the routine events of every day, but rather during two or three great moments of decision which happen in every life.

GREAT MOMENTS OF DECISION As Shakespeare put it: "There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life Is bound in shallows and in miseries. If the opportunity is allowed to slip• by unimproved, success turns into failure. There is the name of a place which signifies such a turning point in the lives of men and that is KadeshBarnea, which is situated on the southern border of the Promised Land. There came a point in the pilgrimage when the children of Israel were within striking distance of their inheritance. They sent out spies, twelve of them, to report on the land they were about to take. The majority report, made by the representatives of ten of the tribes, was that the land could not be taken because the cities were too fortified and the enemy too numerous. The minority report, brought in by Joshua and Caleb, was turned down despite the fact that God had told the

people through Moses that they would possess the land. It was at this point in the journeying, like the five minutes in the battle according to Napoleon, which determined their future. With the fruit of their tribulations within their grasp, they refused to take it, and thus had to continue wandering in the desert for many years.

THERE is a Kadesh-Barnea in every nation, a critical moment where it has the power to turn back a force from without, or a corrosion from within. It has been called "a time of visitation" when power is given to vanquish, but if not seized, turns the nation into a kind of cadaver on which the carrion feed. There is a Kadesh-Barnea in every man's spiritual life. His background may have been filled with unbelief, dishonesties, adulteries, and any of the seven pallbearers of the soul. Then

there comes a moment of illumination to the mind, perhaps in a moment of sickness, or a startling thought while reading, or the vision of innocence in a child. If this grace is responded to, a person is lifted out of himself, cuts connections with the past and starts out on a new career and new paths, with Heaven shining in his face.

Fl MEN too often play with opportunity as a toy, and when their eyes are opened to see its value, lo! it has vanished. Many reach the margin of a glorious desiny and then turn back to the desert. The path of duty, in a flash of the eye, becomes very plain, but self-indulgence makes the soul as blind as a mole. Were we to deal honestly with these pious inclinations and whisperings of conscience, we should see through the thin guise of our own pretences and would strip the veneer of insincerity from our deeds. There is often a conspiracy in every man against himself; he hunts for excuses to cover up his disobedience, but in a single moment life can be changed not by pulling oneself up by the power of his own will, but by a response to Heaven's inspirations which leaves the deserts of the world behind.

Joseph Cardinal AI Y.C.W. FOUNDER'S VISIT. Cardijn, the founder of the Y.C.W. Movement is , corning to Perth in early February 1966. The action on teamwork in the preliminary training campaign is making a great impression on those Y.C.W. boys who are using the campaign at their meetings. This section points out that our whole lives involve teamwork in various ways. We are all dependent on other people — .our families, our friends, the people we work with, the people we play sport with, fellow Y.C.W. members — all these people are dependent on us, just a s we are dependent on them. It is this dependance on each other that makes us all part of a team, at work, on the sports field, at home, in the Y.C.W. As members of a team we have obligations to the other members to fulfil, and we will be better able to do this if there is a bond of friendship between ourselves and them. All members of the team are working for the same purpose — at work to work ti.fficiently, happily, and productively; on the sports field to win the game by better play and use of the rules of the game; and at home to make it a home full of understanding, love and security. • BUSSELTON TRAINING WEEKEND. The Bunb;:ry diocese recently ran a combined training weekend a ttended by 80 young people at Busselton. Four representatives from Perth Diocese attended the weekend so that views could be exchanged. But springtime is clean up time, so a "busy bee" has been organised to clean up the grounds and the rooms of Marian Lodge. There is a good deal to be done so many young people — boys and girls — are needed. "Busy Bee' day is November 20, starting at 9.30 a.m. at the lodge in Canning Road, Kala munda. You are asked to bring your own lunch, t he girls will be providing drinks! If you would like t o help, but have no transport, please ring Pauline Knight at the Y.C.W. office on 23-4546. IF the frost in a home deep freeze builds up too I much, the temperature will rise and the unit will be less efficient. Among the many ad vantages of this type of heater is its flexibility for operation on all water supplies — full-pressure city water, elevated tanks or pressure pump systems. However, the main benefit to the consumer is obviously the total efficiency of "Mains Pressure" which allows a flow of hot water from your taps equivalent to the cold water pressure. Replacing Glass replacing glass in a window great WHEN care should be taken with the removal

of the old, broken glass. Wear an old pair of stout gloves, if possible, and gently tap out the pieces, using a pair of pincers or pliers to withdraw the fragments. Occasionally it will be found that the glass has been fitted with a wooden bead, and this must be removed; but in the great majority of cases the glass will have been secured by putty, and this must be removed with a stout knife, for if any lumps of hard putty are left in the frame it may be difficult, or even impossible, to fit new glass; and if the glass does slip in, the old putty may 'strain and eventually crack it. • CARE WHEN MEASURING WHEN all the glass and putty has been removed, measure the opening with the greatest care, and when ordering the glass state that the measurement is an exact one, and that you want the necessary glass cut to a fraction smaller (about tin. less than the tight measurement). When putting a new sheet of glass into a window' frame, first work up your putty until it is quite plastic (like a stiff piece of dough). If it should be dry and crumbly, moisten it with a small quantity of linseed oil, and roll between the hands until it is easily workable. • APPLY THINLY PLACE a little of the putty in the corners of the rebate and apply thinly all around the frame, push it into place and press home closely (it may be further secured by driving a few brads into the framework). Then putty the corners and spread it all around the frame, forcing it hard on to the glass and woodwOrk with a stout krife, at the same time smoothing the surface neatly. Before fitting glass into new woodwork. the latter should be painted or the putty may later flake off. In the case of a repair, paint the putty to match the remaining frames, but not before a full day has elapsed, giving the rutty suff.cient time to set thoroughly.
