"GOD SAID: "LET THERE BE LIGHT." It is now known scientifically that the whole world is made up of light, and light may be of two kinds — bottled light and unbottled light. Bottled light is what we find in incandescent bulbs. Unbottled light is anything material. The atom, when split, was found to be made up of light. But light may be considered not only from a scientific point of view, but also from a point of view of common experience, and also symbolically. Light, taken figurately, means knowledge. Hence, when we understand anything, say, "I see it." It also embraces the light of natural conscience which every man carries within him, as well as Divine revelation which shines in the soul from Scriptures or the written word of God. Physical light, such as that which comes from the sun or from any kind of

illumination, may be the object of rebellion, just as much as the light of c onscience. When poor Job was musing about his sufferings on the dung hill, he said that the thief and the adulterer both wait for the night, saying: "No eye shall see me." "The Light which illumines every man that comes into the world" is something they seek to avoid. Deeds of darkness are suited to be done in the dark. Hence Our Lord said: "And this is the condemnation, that Light has come into the world, and men love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For every one that doth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deed should be reproved. searchlight. Most crimes would be left undone if they were seen by a thousand eyes. When the light that is within a man has become darkness, the very blessed day is turned to night. In their revolt against eternal Light, they carry about night in their bosom and all their terrors are present in the brightness of the day. There is a tremendous spiritual connotation hidden in the words "night life." The light of day which is welcome to honest people, is a terror to bad people. They curse the sun, not because it scorches them, but because it discovers them. Light makes their consciences fly in their faces and turns them into their own accusers.

LIGHT is our best friend, and it is wisdom to obey it; to resist it is to rebel against our own interest. Owls hoot, but the moon shines. Light would lead to more light if we did but consent to it. Our Blessed Lord said of Himself: "I am the Light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light." He used this analogy to His hearers because it reminded them of the pillar or cloud of fire that guided the people of Israel in their pilgrimage. As long as that light spread above the tabernacle, they stayed. Whenever it lifted itself up, they pulled up their tent pegs and went on their journey. There is much wisdom in the oldfashioned phrase of warning, "do not run before you are sent." There is always a clear space between the guiding ark and ourselves, and we should not tread on the heels of the Divine Guide in our eager confidence that we know where He wants us to go. Trusted and loved, this Divine Light becomes our Guide; neglected and turned from, we turn ourselves into darkness. But even in the darkness there is a Spectator Who will be our Judge. It is better, therefore, to follow the Light and have a Friend in time and eternity.

TO endeavour to introduce the new Handbook to branches, the Diocesan Union of the Holy Name Society has arranged for a series of five regional meetings beginning on Tuesday, November 16, at 8 p.m. It is hoped to limit the meetings to two hours, finishing at 10 p.m. These meetings will be held at Victoria Park, Scarborough, Fremantle, Highgate and Midland Junction in the parish halls. Each branch in the metropolitan area is asked to send three representatives, preferably from their executive, and they are asked to make certain that they have studied the handbook so that they will be in a position to discuss it and be able to make suggestions how to implement it. ENCOURAGING THE BREAST-FEEDING OF BABIES OFFERS THIS SUGGESTION — -Another area of family living you might consider giving a boost to is towards the increased understanding of the 'basal temperature' method for promoting family planning through periodic continence. I am shocked at the number of practising Catholics, who are very intelligent and sincere and yet are convinced that Rhythm just does not work and they have the babies to prove it. These are the ones who have not heard of the accuracy of the basal temperature method." Her suggestion is supported by a number of letters occasioned by a recent press interview which emphasised the effectiveness of this modern method of birth regulation. Some of them asked for more information. Others questioned my information. Still others advised that I soak my old celibate head in a bucket of ice water.

D ILEMMA ONE letter, unique as it is in its expression, does represent the typical dilemma a good Catholic couple can find itself in these days. "I hope I do not seem disrespectful if I disagree with you (about the effectiveness of Rhythm), but I must in all sincerity and truth. My husband and I have practised the Rhythm system since the birth of our fourth child and have had three children more in five years. "The big fallacy of Rhythm is its undependability and inaccuracy. It is not the self-discipline we mind so much . . . I cannot understand how adherents to the Rhythm method can lump everyone under one category and one rule. "I speak truthfully —if Catholic parents could depend on Rhythm they would accept it wholehearted12,-. For some fortunate women who are regular it will work per

fectly. What of the thousands of women who are irregular? "I believe it wrong to practise birth control for selfish reasons-wanting a new car or television— but what of a person whose whole being cries out: 'Enough! I can handle no more!'" There is more to this excellent letter, but these quotations raise some pertinent points of discussion. The Rhythm system referred to by this correspondent is apparently .the old calendar method which had an average 75 per cent Oftendegree of effectiveness. times, too, because of uninformed advice by the physicians or misunderstanding by the client, marital relations were encouraged during the most fertile period. The calendar method was also based on a statistical average of a

28-day cycle of sterility and fertility. The woman who could be called average in this area, as well as in others, is a rare bird. In this area, as in others, each woman is unique. This is why the correspondent's complaint about lump ing "everyone under one category and one rule" is justified.

"IRREGULAR"

THE basal temperature method with other indications, such as a change in cerVical mucous and mild abdominal discomfort, determines with highest accuracy the particular cycle of each woman, even the one who is "irregular." One language professor used to say that the irregular verbs in Hebrew were all regular in their irregularity. This is true of women's cycles, even of the extreme kind. Any pathology can be corrected by a competent gynaecologist, but most cases of irregularity are normal and can easily be de t erminecl by the basal temperature method. In this discussion one fact stands clear. That is the need of all w omen to understand themselves and the latest medical findings aF c ompletely as possible. The use of this knowledge within the Christian context of a generous love and the value of a child as a gift of God can only lead a couple to a growth of union with each and with God.

Returning to Perth in 1952, Mrs. Burnett joined the Therry Society, acted in and produced several plays. "A critic's duty," said Mrs. Burnett. "is to inform the public truthfully, whether the play be performed professionally or by amateurs. A critic- should be constructive and not display his or her own knowledge at the expense of the producers or players. "The production must move me, teach nle. exalt me, amuse me, but never bore me. A critic can help. One can lose a person to theatre for all time, this can be said especially true of youth." It is a weekly Praesidium meeting of the Legion of Mary. This scene is repeated each week in over 1,200 locations in Tanzania and Kenya, as one of the most powerful lay apostolate societies in East Africa, the Legion of Mary, meet to pray together, report on work done and organise their work for the coming week. Two young African men approach a grass hut. On a bench outside the wooden door sits a man about forty. A child of four chases a goat from the bean plants under the banana trees. A woman in a shabby dress is breaking sticks for a fire, while a baby of nine months sits on the bare ground crying from lack of attention. The man on the bench eyes the t wo men approaching him. He ha. seen them before and knows why they are coming to his home—he has not yet married the woman in his home, nor has he taken his two children to the mission to be baptised. He knows these two young men are coming to encourage him to do so. They will talk about the lack of rain, the new road that is being built, or any other subject, but e ventually they will get round to the problems of his soul. They are members of the Legion of Mary.

When they leave him, they will visit his neighbour, who has not been to Mass for months. He had heard that last week they spent an hour instructing a sick catechumen. These two men are joined by 17,000 other Legionaries in the nine dioceses of Kenya and the 22 ecclesiastical jurisdictions of Tanzania. All belong to a Praesidium in their local mission, which makes its report to a nearby Curia or control. Believe me, after four years at the Council, I have come to the conclusion that never before in the history of the Church have there been so many "dry martyrs" in her Councils as there are today. The "wet martyrs" shed their blood and died quickly. The "dry martyrs- rotted in prisons and concentration camps, keeping their blood dry but dying a living death. One bishop used to put a raisin in a glass with a few drops of water, allowed it to ferment and then used this to celebrate Mass. And he did all this while undergoing torture in a Siberian prison. The Berans, the Sepers, the Slipyis, the Quinlans, the Camaras—hundreds and hundreds of them — they are the crucifixes at the Council to whom we look as to a 20-century Christ.

WE have a Paul at the top—a Paul like the one of Tarus who "bears the burden of all the churches on his shoulders." We have missionaries, saints, poverty - embracing bishops — bishops who have left good dioceses in Italy to go to the swamps in Brazil. There are more shepherds here than administrators. Maybe it would be a good thing if we had a "Diocese Exchange- in which we bartered dioceses for a few years, sending the affluent bishops to the needy dioL'eses and bringing the b;shops living in poverty to our comfortable dioceses.
