Further Changes May Be Made In Mass ,By FATHER PLACID JORDAN, O.S.B. THE Commission for Implementation of the Constitution on the Liturgy has met in Rome to study the proposals to make the Mass and the administration of the other sacraments simpler and more readily understood by the people. The commission, headed by Giacomo Cardinal Lercaro of Bologna, began a week-long session when the Ecumenical Council was in recess. High on the agenda for the meeting was a demonstration of a "new look" for the Ordinary of the Mass submitted by Monsignor Johannes Wagner, chairman of the committee on the Mass and director of the liturgical institute at Trier, Germany. The plan developed by Monsignor Wagner's body would seek to restore "the noble simplicity" 4., in the rite of Mass called for in the Constitution i To celebrate their narrow win in the Inter School 1 on the Liturgy, which was enacted by the Council Sports, members of the senior Aquinas College in 1963. team had a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. NEWS COMMENT I
Feast Of Christ The King T
HE intention ot Pope Pius XI in estab-
lishing the Feast of Christ the King in 1925 was based on a realisation of human nature.
He wrote then an encyclical letter which like a lot of other documents can be read and then forgotten. A celebration of some description can make a teaching more vital. Occuring as a feast day does every year, the teaching of Christ's Kingship is refreshed in our memory and claiming again our act of loyalty. It is this specific act of loyalty which should claim the time and thoughts of all Catholics on this last Sunday of October. Christ's answer to Pilate's question leaves no doubt as to His intention of claiming this royal prerogative. His an4wer was directed to all people. He is a King, but His Kingdom is not of this world. "Yes,I am a king. For this was I born, for this I came into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth, listens to My voice." The significance of the Catholic world giving a sign of fealty is that it is a demonstration that the loyalty we are required to give to Christ our King is a loyalty that all good men, no matter of what earthly allegiance, can give. The nature of Christ's Kingship is such that any man giving true and unswerving loyalty to Christ and His Church can still give loyalty and service to any just and legal form of government in its variety of forms. The Church, of which we are members. must extend this kingdom "of truth, of justice and of love" that it might embrace those for whom it was founded—all mankind. This can be done in one way by a demonstration of our enthusiastic loyalty—knowing that other Catholics throughout the world are doing the same. Thus uniting ourselves from our diversity of nationality or political sway. For those who level the charge of divided loyalty in a nationalistic sense, the answer will often be found in an examination, not of Christ's Kingdom and its principles, but of the form of government they would desire or have, usually Godless. Good government is based on the same set o f absolutes—truth, justice and the good of man—as is Christ's Kingdom. Loyalty to t hese on both sides should not bring disparity. As a basis for the finding of the most sought-after commodity in today's world peace—the prayer that is said in the Mass of the feast would be a good starting point: . . . In Your mercy grant that all families of nations cease to be torn apart by the wounds of sin and become subject to the gracious rule of Him Who with You lives and reigns . . ." This is the plea of the prayer of the Festival.

chances are against having an "accident-free day," the choice fell on November 5. It might be extended as a challenge, but on that day in particular it is battling uphill from the start.
THE report that the Post Office made a profit of £.2,100,00 this year was certainly an improvement on last year's overall loss. Nobody likes to see a public utility losing money, because in hardheaded business ways it must increase its charges. This the Post Office has done, and the result points to the possibility that the public could be paying too much now for these necessary services. The report pointed out that the greatest source of income for the Post Office was from telephone calls. Perhaps the cinderella of the improvement plan of the Post Office. The backlog of people waiting for telephones has reached astronomical figures, yet calls provided 38.6 per cent of the total earnings. The use of the telephone is growing all the time and this not only in the cause of better business efficiency, quicker communication. The ringing-up "just for a natter" is tatching on like a plague, especially with the young. One, perhaps unwitting, ally of the Post Office is the ever-present radio session that will run a quiz or call for votes on some "idol." Their switchboards obviously get jammed with calls, all at sixpence a time.
week the annual day of NEXT foolishness will more than likely
bring its usual rash of burns, crackers exploding in the face or hand: noise and smoke. Admittedly, the practice of observing Guy Fawkes Day seems to be diminishing. There is less and less of the pushing advertising so far in advance of the day itself each year. This is more than likely due to the strong public opinion over the waste and the damage. It would be beneficial all round to let the "day" die out altogether. In this connection there is an ironic twist this year in the organisation of the Safety Campaign 1965. Of all the days on which

Years ago, when I was a student in Europe, I followed for a time the very popular courses in Paris of Henri Bergson, the famous philosopher. It was popular to attend his lectures; one would often 'see parked in front of the "College de France" the finest of European automobiles from which descended ladies who were keeping up with the latest philosophical fashion. The popularity of Bergson in those days, however, did not blind others to the great value of his thought. The basic idea of his 'system was an attack upon reason and intellect. He felt that it did not give a complete insight into life simply because life eludes all analysis. A wheat field, he said, could not be described merely by taking a straw. putting it on a paper card, and showing it to studenfts.
one has arisen in our age to play NOthe same role in psychology that Bergson played in philosophy, namely, to crack down on the analysis which smashes human beings as if they were atoms, but can never put them together again.
Sigmund Freud made psychoanalysts very popular, and in doing so, gave to the world insights into the depths of the mind which too long have been ignored. It could very well be that there has been an emphasis or such a stress on psychoanalysts as to ignore the hidden syhthesis of his thought. A distinguished Swiss psychiatrist made an analysis of the 260 clinical cases which Freud quotes in his book "The Psychopathology of Everyday Life." All, without exception, would be classified in one or another of the four categories of sin described in the Sermon on the Mount-57 are concerned with dishonesty, 39 with impurity, 122 with self-centredness or egotism, and 42 with lack of love of neighbour. Could it not be that this analysis of the psychic life of the person is but the inverse of a synthesis which every peaceless heart seeks? Freud was actually describing what St. Paul long before had observed, namely, that within every man is a conflict of the law of the flesh and the 'law of the spirit. Ovid, too, had traced it in saying that everyone seeks the better things of life, but often follows that which is worse.
UNHAPPY ABOUT FRIENDSHIP
IS not the time ripe for someone to develop a psychology based on a synthesis or a unifying of the presently discordant and liattling forces inside of man'? Actually we are on the thin edge of that consolidation of the broken fragments of the mind and heart. While there always remain a certain number of mental aberrations which can be healed only by analysis on the psychological level, there are also many more aberrations of a moral character which can be healed only at the moral level. It costs considerable money to tell one's complexes to a psychoanalyst; it costs only pride and arrogance of soul to confess our sins to representatives of the moral and Divine order. The fact that we conceal sins makes them peculiarly our own. Then they are not just our fault; they are our very personality. Any concealed fault lays a heavy burden on the soul over and above the remorse for the sin itself. The shame of having hid it in the heart always makes the hider feel as if he were acting a lie; he despises himself in the midst of every word of praise that he receives. A confession to a neighbour whom we have wronged is prescribed as the very condition of our receiving pardon. God accepts no service or worship with our hands until we have confessed the wrong done to others.
John, however, is a very different proposition because his figure and his initiatives are very much alive. When penicillin and the sulpha compounds appeared on the public scene they were hailed as 'miracle' drugs. If this description was more than a slight exaggeration there is no doubt of their effectivenozs in checking infection. Many other new drugs have appeared since. Some of them are known only to the manufacturers and medical men using them. In some cases skilfully applied drug therapy can resolve a pathologioal condition which previously required surgery.

should have herself tested. NE W pregnancy tests can give a definite answer in a few hours. If a pregnancy is determined, she can then take extra care to safeguard the tiny life in her womb. Even as commonplace a medicine as aspirin should be avoided. Certainly no other medicines or drugs should be consumed except on prescription by a doctor who is aware of the pregnancy. Another thing to be avoided during these crucial six weeks is an X-ray unless ordered by a doctor who knows of the pregnancy. The use of nasal sprays, kitchen and garden insecticides can also be dangerous to foetal life at this stage of the game.
Doctors also advise against the use of vitamins and minerals unless specifically prescribed for the pregnancy. Inoculations, unless absolutely necessary, should be postponed until the foetal life is more viable.

advances the medimodern cine is making in curing disease and preserving health. However. it should be noted that any drug, whether the lowly aspirin or the most expensive and powerful new compound ,can be misused. There are cases of aspirin poison among young children as there are other incidents of serious side-effects among women using what has become Rnown as "the pill." Care should be taken at all times that drugs are not abused. This is especially true of a woman in the early stages of pregnancy. The first six weeks after conception are the most dangerous for the foetus. Yet this is precisely the time when a woman may not know she is pregnant.
Consequently, the earlier EXTRA CARE a woman's pregnancy is establishhed. the less chance there is that she will inadvertently do or have done to her something that might adversely affect her child. Doctors advise that as soon as she even suspects that she might be pregnant she
NEEDLESS
The trouble with passing on advice like this is that it can stir up needless fears in the minds and hearts of pregnant women. With all the scare headlines about the possibility of birth defects, too many women spend nine months of fear and anxiety over the possibility of bearing a defective child. The fact of the matter is that 99 out of 100 infants are born without any physical defects. Those are pretty good odds. These odds can be improved if the proper precautions are taken in the early stages of pregnancy. Even more importantly, a physical defect in a child does no4 prevent him from meeting the basic challenge of life, which is 01, capacity to be loved and the willingness to love. Why is it that in the opinions of too many people a physically deformed child is the worse possible evil that can happen? The pride of the parents can overcome the right of that child to life. Else why the rationalisation for abortion? FEARS

A Maori Style Garden Party
It was pleasing to see the large attendance of Catholic Women's League
HE level of any town, city or nation is
the level of its womanhood. In the family, the mother intercedes for mercy for the child in the face of the justice of the father; so in society, she has the same meaning with equity, a knowledge and understanding of the world about her. These qualities, as well as sympathy and kindness, are to be found in Mrs. F. Balmer, of Fifth Avenue, Mt. Lawley, State President of the Catholic Women's League. Mrs. Balmer has three married children and is the very proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren. "I'm always listening for their little footsteps coming around the side of the house," she said. Spending her childhood in a happy atmosphere on the Goldfields, Mrs. Balmer attended St. Joseph's Convent, Boulder, and can r emember, attending the same school, the now -famous pianist Eileen Joyce. LOVE-LY WEAR
Child of Mary is one of her happiest memories Some years ago, Mrs. Balmer took a "sentimental journey" back into the past, only to discover than in the fascinating country of the Goldfields nothing has really changed. -It was about fourteen years ago when I first became interested in the Catholic Women's League. My children had married and my days of motherhood were over. I felt I had to try and be helpful to society. I was interested in the charitable work the League w as occupied with, and decided to become a member. We like to say we are the voice of the Catholic woman.Mrs. Balmer believes that a woman should accept leadership, should try to remain young at heart, and must have some change of interest. "She must always be able to count her blessings, and see the bright side of any situation," she said. During the summer months, the game of bowls is Mrs. Balmer's "other interest," Which she enjoys with the company of her husband. Mrs. Balmer has an interesting life—or is it .that she has made life interesting? One thing is certain, she will always see the brighter side, and society will be all the wiser for it. Ways To Make A Delinquent
HOW DO YOU PRODUCE A JUVENILE DELINQUENT? An experienced youth worker in New York has drawn up these facetious steps to juvenile delinquency: , *DEPRIVE the young child of love and understanding. • MAKE him feel rejected, unwanted and inferior. j • SET no restraints for children. Let them hang about the streets day and night. Don't check on their friends. • SLAP the kid around on occasion. Show him who is boss. • SET no rules for discipline. Don't give him any chores to do. • PARENTS should air their differences in front of their children. A good family brawl helps a lot. • BAWL out the teacher for trying to discipline your children. • LET your teenager know how you are cheating on taxes, chiselling shopkeepers, evading creditors, breaking the law. • 1:SE foul language and drink to excess.
