THE PREMIER, MR. DAVID BRAND, OFFICIALLY OPENED SAFETY CAMPAIGN, 1965, ON MONDAY, AT SAFETY HOUSE, MOUNT LAWLEY. Th's year's campaign will be of three week's duration and will highlight the necessity for safety in all walks of life and by all folk, whether in the home, in industry, in or on water, AND ON THE ROADS. Special emphasis will be placed on road safety during the last week of the campaign from October 30 to November 7.
COST OF ACCIDENTS Last year nearly three thousand people died on Australian roads, while 75,000 were injured. The cost to the national economy has been estimated at £ 100 million. When the casualty rate soared last year, one person was killed every 31 hours, and one person injured every eight minutes. Of those killed, about 40 per cent were under 30 years of age, while nearly 60 per cent of those seriously injured were in the same age group.

A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE
I
N spite of the many rules, regulations and other incentives to observe road safety, it is certain that no measure, however efficient, can ensure traffic safety as long as man's conscience has not reached moral
maturity. This moral maturity is emphasised by the r ealisation that each has a natural duty to respect the health and welfare of one's neighbour. It is also a grave duty incumbent on all to protect the lives of others. To use lightly the force that should be under the control of the driver of a vehicle is governed by the same rules and obligations as is the use of anything else that can kill, mutilate, or even just endanger another person. This moral maturity can only come with education and the forming of conscience in the individual. In this respect it is a good thing that the National Safety Councils and the Police Traffic Departments go into schools. Their aim is to educate for this maturity. The National Safety Councils, with their constant advertising, their instructional talks, and, in Western Australia, with its Instructional Centre, are putting a lot of effort into stopping people from killing themselves and each other on the roads. They need everyone's co-operation. It is only by consistently pointing out responsibility in this regard in the home, the school and throukh the information media that the concept will sink into the minds of people, make them think and take some action. When this fails to have any effect and there is the obvious and constant flouting of these laws designed to guide the road-user and protect other people, there must be adequate and effective penalties imposed. There is too much evidence today that respect for road rules is governed by the principle that as long as one is not caught out on an infringement then there is no need to worry. There is also evidence of too little responsibility in young drivers. Their passion for speed and super-confidence in their own ability to handle the machine is a definite menace to other drivers and pedestrians. A call through the Churches is an excellent part of the current Safety Campaign 1965. Their stress on the moral responsibility of the individual based on the right to life could with the co-operation of all thinking people help considerably in the better fulfilment of road laws and the ensuring of safety. Car drivers have a grave responsibility to themselves, to those who ride with them, and to other people on the road to observe all laws in connection with the machine they are using.
MISSION SUNDAY
nN'E of the most worthwhile efforts of the Church has been and will continue to be the amount of work, finance and often sweat and blood put into the missionary territories of the Church. From the time of Christ's directive that the Faith be preached everywhere, there has been this organised effort to give all the chance of accepting Christ and His salvation There is no quick method. The Sacramew:cannot be given without knowledge and understanding to adults. Faith cannot be practised without the preaching of its fundamental tenets. Converts, whether from paganism or other religions, cannot be made by the simple pronouncement: "Right, now I am a Catholic!" Al! this involves not only effort and goodwill. but personnel, their keep, their tools of labour and myriad of incidental but necessary things that a well-established Church community takes for granted. This was provided for us in the beginning. It is our turn and privilege to pass the faith to others. In Australia we have the capability of assuming the responsibility for large areas of South-East Asia. This capability can never be realised unless we have a. truly sacrificial generosity. Priests, Brothers, Sister, Lay Workers are all required as well as the finance necessary to keep them and build the missions. The universal remembrance of the missionary activity of the Church this Sunday should be a prod to our sense of responsibility in spreading the Faith, supplying the means and praying for those already engaged in this work for Christ.

For All Men
Peace is the problem of all men, not just of world leaders, Pope Paul •• • VI told his visitors at his weekly general audience. Saying he would "neither chronicle nor comment on" his visit to the United Nations, the Pope said it is wrong to think that peace only "concerns governments and those who guide the destinies of nations." Grantings that peace is a political problem, he said it is also something that can be affected by men in general. "I SHALL KEEP MY LIFE PURE AND UNDEFILED, AND MY ART ALSO." THIS DOCTOR also wrote a line which has struck modern medicine and psychiatrists profoundly: "MEDITATION IS FOR A MAN'S SPIRIT WHAT WALKING IS FOR HIS BODY."
word "meditation" is rather an THEabused word, for it conjures up
certain formulas of prayer such as the Ignatian method and the De Sales method, all of which so formalise thinking as to destroy it. It ‘s-ould be better to use the words "quiet time," in which one shuts out mAse of the world, enters into himself and judges himself not by his press clippings, but how he stands with God. There is an old story of a Saracen woman who came to England seeking her lover. She passed through the foreign cities with no word upon her

It has well been said that the practice of the quiet time leads to "a progressive recession of the frontier between the conscious and the unconscious."

tongue that could be understood by those who heard her, except the name of him whom she was seeking. Many today are wandering through the earth as strangers in the midst of it. They cannot translate the cry of their own hearts, but it really means "my soul thirsteth for Thee." There is only One Who can respond to these deepest aspirations of the heart. Ino this quiet time, we see that every single event is a summons of His Voice —our sorrows by their bitterness, our joys by their quick passing alike called the heart to Him in Whom alone sorrows can be soothed and joys made full and permanent.
E
ACH person decides for himself what is the best quiet time in his life. Some are owls, others are roosters; some are winders, others are unwinders; some are brightest and most penetrating early in the morning, others are most alert at night. This quiet time is no mere vacuum, but it is rather the opening of a door which in the noisy life is closed. As the Psalmist puts it: "Be still, and know
that I am God." The quiet time is also a kind of natural fortress where one takes refuge from the emptiness and distractions and fulfils the injunction: "When thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber and having shut the door pray to the Father in secret." God does not save by the barrel load. He summons all because He summons each. He does not cast out His illuminations at random over the heads of a crowd, as a rich man might fling coins to a mob, but He addresses everyone singly as if there was no other soul in The the universe to hear His voice. quiet time individualises this summons, appropriates it and allows us to see ourselves as we really are.
Fl THEN there begins an encounter with the Divinity, a half-articulate plea for pardon, and a growing assurance that heart-seeking is sure to issue in heart-finding. "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find."
F l quiet time should be a minimum THIS of half an hour and, if possible, an
hour. It takes almost a quarter of an hour to shut out the distractions of the world. One begins with a confrontation of self, denudes his pretences, throws off the mask he wears before others and looks his faults in the face. Then there takes place an expansion of the field of consciousness which Janet
This quiet time is an absolute necessity of life and without it personality dies. The traveller on a journey looks forward to a spot where he can stay a while; the sailor has his haven where he can furl his sails and find shelter from the storm and tempest. The soul needs actually more rest than the body, and it could very well be that our restless soul is at the basis of many of our physical ills.

THE POPE'S VISIT
0
CTOBER 4 IS THE FEAST DAY OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI.
HE IS traditionally depicted as a slight, gentle saint, a lover of all of God's creation and the composer of the famous prayer — "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace."
In American Catholic history, October 4, 1965, has taken on another significance. On that day another apostle of peace landed on the soil of the United States. He too is a slight and gentle man with a warm smile and beckoning hands. Over a million people of all races and all religions lined the streets of New York to welcome Pope Paul VI. Hundreds of millions of others watched him on television. It was as though more than curiosity motivated them. Here was a man, who, they hoped, might voice in eloquent language their own inarticulate desires for peace. He seemed to recognise this when he said in his United Nations speech: "We feel we are making our own the voice of the dead and of the living . . . We also make our own the voice of the poor, the disinherited, the suffering, of those who hunger and thirst for justice, for the dignity of life, for freedom, for well-being and progress."
ever, for American Catholics there was a special feeling of affectionate reverence for their Holy Father. This was especially evidenced at the climactic evening Mass at Yankee Stadium. Ninety thousand people arrived early and sat through a biting wind in abnorFrom mally cold temperatures. reports, this experience of a lifetime was more than worth the discomfort. It was my privilege to watch the Holy Sacrifice on colour television. Without a doubt it was one of the most beautiful ceremonies I have ever seen. The non-Catholic television reporter had the same reaction. Yankee Stadium, the scene of the Mass, is not the most beautiful structure ever built by the hands of man. However, the darkness softened its harsh lines. The people, the priests and Religious offered a soft colouring of their own.
DOMINATING the scene in the centre of the stadium floor was a beautiful elevated sanctuary covered with a gorgeous red rug with banks of yellow chrysanthemums at each corner with the green grass of the baseball diamond covering a conA golden trasting background. canopy of almost oriental design rose on slender pillars over the altar. The whole effect on television was one of radiant, colourful openness. Whoever designed and executed this temporary sanctuary caught not only the spirit of the new liturgy, but also appreciated the colour potential of television. They deserve our congratulations and thanks. The television networks also deserve our gratitude. As proved in their coverage of President Kennedy's funeral, they can rise to a challenge with dignity and extraordinary technical competence. Their coverage of the Pope's visit was only a further indication of the real blessing a good and extensive communications medium can be to a free people.

surf, rocks, boulder landscapes, BUSH, and child—these are the subjects that fascinate and interest Mrs. Edith McNamara, a convert to Catholicism, who will present her first "oneman" art exhibition next week. Mrs. McNamara was received into the Church 15 years ago by Monsignor J. Wallace, who was then parish priest of Highgate. She has two sons attending Aquinas College' and although just as busy as most housewives, finds time to paint nearly every weekday. "I do not know whether I chose colour, or colour chose me," said Mrs. McNamara, "but since my childhoodI have been wedded to colour and the wonder of nature. • `I do not attempt to imitate nature, but to continue it into the realm of the mind, for art picks up where nature ends. "My work could be described as fantasy, as many are statements of feelings experienced as a child." 0 MOTHER AND CHILD Bishop Fulton J. Sheen said in one of his "Life Is Worth Living" books: "Every woman in the world was made to be a mother, either physically or spiritually," and Mrs. McNamara, who has been painting for eight years, portrays the tenderness and protective feeling of the mother for the child in her "Mother and Child" theme of the exhibition. White surf on a rocky landscape, abstract paintings of boulders against light-blue Australian skies, the bush and forest studies will add to the variety of the showing. Edith McNamara has been hung in the Helena Rubinstein Prize, the W.A. Perth Art Galleryconducted Perth Prize, the Claude Hotchin Prize, and this year won the Swan Brewery Prize, a competition conducted by the Guild of Undergraduates at the University of W.A. The exhibition of paintings by Edith McNamara will be opened by Dr. Neil Scrimgeour, MB., Ch.B., on Monday. October 25, at 3 p.m. in theClaude Hotchin Gallery at Boans and will conclude on October 29.

BROTHER JUNIPER'S PAGE FOR
DEAR BOYS AND GIRLS
J UNIOR
r ear Boys and Girls, This week I must remind you all of the Festival of Christ the King which will be held at Perry Lakes October 31. Stadium on Sunday, On this day each one of us should make every effort to attend this annual Festival and to give glory, praise and honour to Christ, the King of all mankind. I know it wi l l need a big effort on the part of most. The weather will probably be just right for going to the beach. Some of you wi l l want to study for your exams which are not very far off, while others wi l l probably have difficulty in getting to the stadium. I t will mean you will have to give up something you would normally do on a Sunday afternoon. Remember, this sacrifice on your part will be nothing compared to Our Lord's, who died on the Cross for each one of us. As far as transport goes, there wi ll be special buses leaving Perth f or the stadium. Details of these are elsewhere in this issue. I have told you about this, this so as you won't make arrangeeek w ments to do something else on that Sunday. God bless you all, BROTHER JUNIPER Please fill in the coupon below in PLO LETTERS and send it to Brother Juniper. WE therefore ask you, venerable brothers, among the people entrusted to your care and vigilance, to preserve this faith in its purity and integrity — a faith which seeks only to remain perfectly loyal to the word of Christ and of the Apostles and unambiguously rejects all erroneous and mischievous opinions. Tirelessly promote the cult of the Eucharist, the focus where all other forms of piety must ultimately emerge.
