OST WILL AGREE THAT IT IS NO SMALL MATTER TO GATHER THE BISHOPS OF THE WORLD TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE FOR MONTHS AT A TIME. Each day is taken up with discussion of the matters placed on the agenda and the debate _can seem interminable. What must be constantly borne in mind when reading reports of the Council activity and the matters discussed by the Fathers is that they have to be, and mostly are, aware of the effect of the final decision. This final decision of the Council Fathers, when ratified by the Pope and promulgated in a Constitution or Decree will be legislation for a long period of time. This is the main cause for lengthy consideration because the decrees must look to the future while being alive to the needs of the Church now. The impatience that is evident in quite a few clergy and laity is thus something that is unreasonable. Mostly it is these impatient ones who take Council discussions to be Council decisions, and it was this possible effect that caused the element of secrecy which surrounded the preparation for the discussions and the attempt to keep the first session governed by the Council secret. It is right and correct that once the decrees are promulgated that they be studied and put into practice. But it also remains true that this be done with prudence in the knowledge that in these the Church is at the beginning of change and that there will follow, in things like the Liturgy and worship, a long period of gradual evolution. There will be evidence of a greater diversity in the Church as it adapts itself to the diocese and country where it is leading the ''People of God" to Heaven. Yet with this diversity, the unity of Faith and the unity of hearts and minds will remain also. Such a forecast for the, future course of Catholic life would be a forecast of chaos if the Church founded by Christ were not a hierarchical society. It is the Bishops in union with the Vicar of Christ who are making the decisions for change and it is they who will prevent the possibility of chaos w hen the time comes to implement them. The Bishops in general are taking a path between extremes, seeking the happy mean. It is notable that objectors on one side or the other are wedded to their own opinions and seek to impose what they want on everybody else. The Bishops must think of the needs of all. With the establishment of the Synod of Bishops who will advise the Holy Father, the rule of order in a time of change will be much more secure. We can only have patience.

Early indications seemed to point that he had toppled from this precarious position because of his retent leanings to the influence of the P.K.I. Astutely, he has climbed back to his place of influence because the original coup got out of hand and he could no longer control the involvement of the communist element. The attempted coup and the counter by the army and now the subsequent heavy-handed action against the communists, apparently initially by popular feeling and now with the President's blessing, reinstates the old order of things in that country. No matter how popular the leader might be with the people, he still has to retain his position with the delicate balance between right and left. The leaning on the army now will be softened later by not being too severe on the powerful left. Even if they do get a bit roughed up in the meantime, they will be needed to balance the army. This is the way it has see-sawed in the past and there does not seem at the moment to be any indication of change. If there is, and the President can still rule with dependence on the army alone, a great sphere of communist influence in South-East Asia will be nullified.

shortbread. Press mixture over base and sides of a 9in. springform pan. Refrigerate for one hour. Prepare filling.
Sieve the cottage cheese. Beat eggyolks and sugar until light and fluffy, add the cottage cheese, cornflour, vanilla and sour cream. Beat until smooth. Beat egg-whites until stiff, then fold into the cheese mixture. Pour into prepared crumb crust. Bake in a moderate oven for 11 hours, then turn off the heat and allow to stand in the oven until cold. When quite cold remove from the tin and decorate. TO DECORATE: Drain the cherries. Arrange them decoratively on top of the cheesecake. Blend cherry juice and arrowroot and bring to the boil, stirring until thickened. Add a little red food colouring if desired. Spoon over the cherries. Chill before serving.

No change is possible in teachings, whether of faith or morals, which she has solemnly defined as divinely-revealed truths. Outside that area, there are many theological opinions of which she may approve as being' t he most likely in view of the evidence available at the time, although progress in biblical studies, historical research and scientific discoveries may warrant transferring approval to other opinions. In disciplinary laws, of course, there are frequent changes, prescribing the attitude of Catholics in practice towards new problems arising in the ever-changing world around them. -LATIN-RITE UNITY" Q.: For example, we were always taught that the use of Latin was a sign of the Church's Catholicity. R.: Not of her "Catholicity," but of "Unity," since the vast majority of Catholics are united in the Western or Latin Rite Church. In 1947, Pope Pius XII said, in his Encyclical -Mediator Dei" on the Liturgy: "The use of the Latin language, as it prevails in the greater part of the Church, is a clear and beautiful sign of Unity." This means that the Catholic laity should be able to follow the Mass whether in Latin or in English. Latin still remains the official language of the Western Church, and training iin it is still necessary for all Latin Rite priests.
