FREEDOM. OF WORSHIP IS GUARANTEE THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL'S celebrated draft document on religious liberty, which was approved by on overwhelming majority ( 1,998 to 224) in a preliminary vote on September 23, proclaims the right of every man to worship according to the dictates of his own conscience, free from coercion "by any human power." It declares that this right, both for individuals and religious groups, is based on 'the very dignity of human nature as known by reason and revelation. Therefore, civil societies and individuals have corresp a onding obligation to respect and ensure its exercise.

A BAD CONSCIENCE keeps a lot of snakes coiled within itself, and at night the nocturnal brood come out with their bitter fangs of poisonous remorse. But because men cannot quiet their hearts by themselves, it is not true that the heart cannot find peace. There may be times when our heart chides us that we have fallen far below our ideals, but with amendment, one can always be sure of the Father's Love. There are always sensitve souls who are much too ready to think evil of themselves and to distress themselves with their evil thinking. It is better not to appraise one's own spiritual life and progress, but to leave it to God and to bend all attention to advancing in love of God and love of neighbour.

he follows conscience when it says "you are wrong," but he is not always vindicated when his conscience says "you are right." The inward judge needs to be stimulated and enlightened and kept under the guidance of the spirit.

That is because he judges himself not by worldly standards nor by his weak neighbours, but by God Himself. Nothing is more clearly witnessed by individual experience than that we may do a wrong thing and think that it is right. Our Blessed Lord said: "They

They are a fine race of people, hardworking and intelligent, very often compared to the thrifty Scots in Great Britain. They are receiving the faith with wide open hearts much as the Irish did in in the time of St. Patrick. Their apostle, too, was an Irishman, the great Bishop Shanahan, who blazed a trail for the cause of Christ in Eastern Nigeria. Today the flourishing Church in Eastern Nigeria is a living monument to this tall, intrepid missionary of whose greatness znd stature there can be no uest ion.

THERE are many ethnic groups in Nigeria, as different in character and temperament as the Irish are from the French, or the Italians from the Germans, each with its own language, customs and traditions.

RECORD

In Yorubaland the faith has taken slower roots, but nonetheless deep. There are many obstacles, not the least being the spread of Islam from the north and the multitude and variety of Protestant religions each with its own version of the Christian faith. And it is interesting to note that there is no bigotry among the various Christian Churches, which is a good augury for Christian unity.

B IGGEST CHALLENGE THE NORTHERN region is the biggest challenge to the Church. Here is the stronghold of the Hausa and Fulani tribes, which are traditionally Moslem. Many of them are good, upright, honest people, living a life of integrity according to their own lights and the rules of the Mohammedan religion. The Church here is only in its infancy and there is yet a gigantic task to be achieved. "No man of goodwill can accept the fact that two-thirds of the world—two million out of every three million men—do not attain the level of normal human development that technology places at the disposition of privileged peoples. I do not think there is any room for doubt that such was her intention, not that the vast majority of Anglicans would agree with the e xplanation I have given, and with Queen Elizabeth I in rejecting the Catholic doctrine of tlle Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist brought about by the transubstantiation of the bread into His body.
