Theyoungestofafamily ofninethelateSisterVeronicawaschristenedAgnes, byherparentsJamesand CatherineMcKennawhen shewasbornatCannington in1872. SheenteredtheSistersof Mercy,afterbeingeducated atVictoriaSquareandwas finallyprofessedonMarch 19,1891,bytheMoatReverendMatthewGibney,the thenBishopofPerth.Her religiouslifewasspentat VictoriaSquare,Toodyay, Yorkandtheorphanageat Subiaco. ThelateSisterVeronica
wasengagedinactivework attheorphanageuptothe lasttwoyearsofherlife. ShewasthesurvivingmemberoftheMcKennafamily ofwhichtherearetwenty niecesandnephews.Two grand-niecesaremembers ofreligiousorders,onea SisterofSt.JohnofGod. Broome,theother,amemberoftheBrigidineCongregationinSydney. A grand-nephewistheRev. RobertMcKenna,M.Sc.,of DouglasPark,N.S.W. CelebrantoftheSolemn RequiemMasswastheRev.

ATtheopeningoftheannualY.C.WFeteintheCatholic CentregroundslastFridaynight,Mr.PeterFerguson, presidentofPerthRotary,urgedparentsandmaturepeople toassistintheexpansionoftheY.C.W.,whichhedescribed as"awonderfulyouthmovement."
Thefetewasorganisedto raisefundsforY.C.W.work, especiallytheconstruction ofaweekendcampatPt. Peronandmaintenanceof MarianLodge,wherestudy weekendsforleadersare beingheldcurrently.
Mr.Ferguson,anonCatholic,attendedthefete withhiswifeanddaughter andexpressedwarminterest intheworkofthemovement.
"Icountitaverygreat honourindeed,"hesaid,"to havebeenaskedtocome alongheretonighttosaya fewwordsandopenthis fete.
"WhenIwasfirstasked,I wasalittlereticent,but thenIheardthattheproceedsofthefetearetobe devotedtoCatholicworkfor youth. ThiswillhappenthroughouttheCatholicworld,just aslastSundayaspecialappealtohelpinthemissionary endeavourandobligationoftheChurchwasmade.
Thesignificanceofthisactofloyaltybysucha diversenumberofpeople,belongingtodifferent nationalities,ruledbydifferentformsofgovernment. canonlyhighlightthetruemeaningofthesupposed chargeof"dividedloyalties"ofCatholics.
ChristisKingindeed,notonlyintheory.Thenature ofHiskingshipissuchthatanyman,givingtrueand unswervingloyaltytoChristandHisChurch,canstill giveloyaltytoanyjustandlegalformofgovernment initsvarietyofforms.
Christ,WhocametoredeemALLofmankind,thus broughtandboughtmenbackfromthepowerofSatan intowhichthey,throughAdam,hadfallen.ByHis sufferingsanddeathontheCross,Hisdominionwas established.ByHisdualnatureasGodandasMan, Heexercisestherightofsovereigntywhichbringsall menunderHisrule.

TheChurchwhichChristestablishedmustcarryout thisKingshipofChrist.itmustextendHisKingdom "oftruth,ofjusticeandoflove"thatitmightembrace thoseforwhomitwasdesigned-allofmankind.
Thestatementsofgovernments-whogettheir authorityfromGod-orofanyman.thatthiskingship doesnotexist,orisamereinterferenceofa"sacristy body"designedtogiveitaholdovermen,showtheir completemisunderstandingoftheroleoftruthandof justice.
Thesearethingswhichareabsoluteandmustbe ascribedtobymenofallages,allnationalities.Where theChurch,divinely-appointedcustodianoftheFaith inChrist.speaksofthesesthingsandman'sduty,she speakswiththeauthorityofChrist.
Therecanbenotruedisparityofloyaltiesbecause governmentshouldbedirectedtoman'sgood,basedon truthandjustice-thesesameabsoluteswhichChrist asKinginsistsbelongtoHimandmustbepromoted byall.

MANYpeoplelookonprayerasanaviator mightlookonaparachute-theyhope theymayneverhavetouseit,butitmay comeinhandyiftheyeverhavetobaleout. Prayerhasmanyforms,suchasvocal,meditativeandcontemplativeprayer.Invocal prayerwegotoGodonfoot;inmeditationwe gotoGodonhorseback;andincontemplative prayer,thesaintsgotoGodinajet.
THEREARESEVERALCONCRETESUGGESTIONS THATMAYBEGIVENFORPRAYER:
1.INPRAYER,DONOTDOALLTHETALKINGLISTEN.Whatwouldadoctorthinkifyouwent intotheoffice,rattledoffallyoursymptomsandthen walkedout?Howdidyoueverlearnalanguageifnot bylisteningtoit?Howdoesascientistlearnthelaws ofnature,ifitisnotbypassivelysittingbeforenature andallowingittorevealsecrets?Prayerisaconstant talkingtoGod.Itisnotaone-waystreet;itisa boulevard.Scripturesays:"Speak,Lord,Thyservant heareth,"whichtoomanyinprayerchangeto:"Listen, Lord,Thyservantspeaketh."
2.THEESSENCEOFPRAYERISNOT"GIVEME THIS"OR"GIVEMETHAT."Petitionisavery lawfulformofprayer,butitisonlyoneformofprayer. Whatwouldayoungmanthinkofagirlwho,onevery date,askedforagift'?Themorelovethereis,theless isthedesiretoreceive.Oneofthereasonswhywe tearpricetagsoffourgiftsisinorderthattherewill benorelationshipbetweenthegiftoftheloverandthe loveofthegiver.Whentheprodigalsonlefthome,he saidtohisfather:"Giveme."Whenhereturned,a chastenedyoungman,hesaid:"Makeme."
3.DONOTTHINKTHATGODISARELUCTANT LISTENERTOOURPRAYERS.Godisnotlike amanwhorunsacrossthestreetwhenheseesabeggar approaching.GodisaLovingFather,notaforcethat hastobebrokendownbeforeHegivesblessingsto Hischildren.
4.LETNOTALLTHEMESSAGESYOUSENDTO GODBECIRCULARLETTERS.Theliturgical prayerisnecessary,butprayermustleaveroomforthe worries,thecares,theneeds,theanxieties,thegriefs ofourownheart.Eachofushasaheartunlikeany otherintheworld;itisthisdifferencewhichmakesup thecontentofprayer.OurBlessedLordsaidthatHe callsHissheepbyname:therefore,Hissheepshould personallyrespond.Ifallofourprayersarecircular lettersinthesensethatourheartisnotinthem,God maythrowthemintotheHeavenlywastebasket.Ifwe donothearkentowhatwesay,Godmaynothearken tous.Asonelistenstoprayersatpublicgatherings, onewondersiftheyarenotsaidfortheaudience, ratherthantoGod.
5.ONEOFTHEBESTFORMSOFPRAYERIS COMMUNIONINLOVE.Prayerisadialogue. Silenceisbrokenintwoways-eitherwithfellow-man orwithGod.Itisbrokenwithfellow-maninconversation!itisbrokenwithGodinprayer.Whatever loverssay,therefore,wesay.Sometimeswhenprayer becomesverydeepashumanlove,itcanexpressitself onlybyasigh.Itismorethancanbeexpressedin words.
FuneralProblems
1111HEnewspaperreportthatcarsinfuneral processionsinMelbournewillnowtravel withheadandtaillightsonisamovewhich couldbecommended.Itisnotlaw,butwas movedbytheFuneralDirectorsAssociation. Perhapsthesamecouldbeintroducedhere.
Overtheyearsithasbecomemoreandmoredifficult forpeoplepayingtheirrespectstothedeadtomove fromthechurchtothecemeteryinanyorderlyand dignifiedmanner.Oflate,ithasbecomeinsomecases aspeedraceandatestofskillat"roadjuggling"to keepupwithafuneralcortege.
EducationAndPublicOpinion
3:WhyDoCatholicSchoolsExist?
CATHOLICschoolshavebeenbroughtintobeingby CatholicparentsandCatholicChurchauthorities, actingjointly.Theseschoolseducate27,000WestAustralianchilden,thatis,18percentofthechildrenofthe State.Theschoolsnumber160.
WHYdotheschoolsexist?
THEYEXISTbecausewe,believeinthefollowing things-
Thatreligiousandmoralvaluesareimportant.
Thateducationinthesevaluesshouldbeintegratedwithmoregeneraleducation.
Thateducationinthesevalues,ASWEUNDERSTANDTHEM,isbestservedwherethereis broadidentitybetweenparents,teachersand childreninRELIGIOUSBELIEF,RELIGIOUS PRACTICEandMORALASPIRATION.
Therefore,wherepossible,theseschoolshave beensetup.Wecontendthatsuchschoolsshould bepermitted,encouragedandassistedwithout prejudicetothedesiresofotherparentstomake othereducationalarrangments.
Letuslookathowotherclassesofparentsfare inthepresentAustraliansystemoffreeandcompulsoryeducation.
Asmallminorityofparentsmayregardreligious teachingasharmful.Theseparentsareservedby thepresentschools,providedthattheywithdraw theirchildrenfromgeneralreligiouseducation givenbytheclassteacher,andfromspecialreligiouseducationgivenbyvisitingdenominational teachers.
Otherparentsmayregardreligiousteachingas unimportant.Theseparentsareservedbythe presentschools,eitherbywithdrawingtheirchildrenasabove,orbyindicatingthroughwordor examplethatwhatgoesonatreligiousclassesat schoolneednotbetakenseriously.
Anotherclassofparentmayseriouslywishhis childtoreceivereligiouseducation,andmayfeel thattheinfluenceofhome,churchandthemaximumofonehourperweekfromclassandvisiting teacherisasufficientwayofeducatingreligiously. Suchparentsarewellservedbythepresentsystem; infact,itisexpertlytailoredtosuittheirneeds. Catholicsmaypointoutthatachildsotaughtmay bebewilderedbythespectrumofunbelief,halfbeliefandfullbutvaryingbeliefamongparents, teachersandchildreninsuchschools.Wemay holdthetheoreticopinionthatparentsaretoo optimisticabouttheeffectsofonehourperweek insuchanenvironment.Butifparentssincerely believethatsuchreligiouseducationisadequate, weshouldrespectthissincerebelief.

Thereareafewfactorscontributingtothis,someof whichcannotbedoneawaywith,but,ontheother hand,somecertainlycanberecalledtopeople'sminds. Trafficlightsbreakupaprocession,butmotorists mustobeythelightsand'waittocatchupontheprocession,whichtravelsslowerthanthenormalflowof trafficandkeepstotheleft.
Thereisnowmoretrafficontheroadsandanincreasingnumberofdriverswhodonotrealisethatafuneral cortegeanditsprocessionhaverightofwayatintersections.Somewillbreakthroughaprocessionwillynillywithtoday'smaddeningdesiretogetwherever theyaregoingwithallspeed.
Thislackofmannersstemsfromthecapitalroadsin ofimpatienceandsadlyenoughalackofrespectfor thedead.Thelawallowsforthisrespectandmotorists shouldobeythatlaw-evenifitisonlythroughfearof prosecution.
IffuneralprocessionsNEEDtobemoreobviousthan thenoticeablefactthattheyarefollowingahearseand mourningcoaches,thenbyallmeansletthemputon theirlights.This,however,wouldnotstoptheimpatient andbad-manneredpersonwhowillnotwaitatan intersectionforthecortegeandprocessiontopass.
Thethingwhichmustbeemphasisedandcanbe producedbygoodexampleistoshowrespectforany funeralcortegeandprocessionbygivingitrightofway atintersectionsandbyavoidingasfaraspossible breakinginandhoppingfromcartocarinanimpatient efforttopassby.
Whatweaskinreturnisthattheyshouldrespect oursincerebelief,namelythatforourreligious purposes,forthetransmissionofreligiousand moralvaluesasweunderstandthem,adifferent sortofschoolisdesired:Weaskthemtorespect thisbelief,notmerelybyconcedingtherightto setupsuchschoolsbutalsobypermittingthe exerciseofthisrightwithoutfinancialdiscrimination. Parentshavearighttoaneducationfortheir childrenwhichisfreeandalsoinaccordwiththeir wishes.InAustralia,Catholicparentscanhavean educationfortheirchildrenwhichisinaccord withtheirwishes,butwhichisnotfree.Orthey canhaveaneducationfortheirchildrenwhichis free,butnotinaccordwiththeirwishes.Catholic parentscannothavebothrightssimultaneously.It illbecomesparentswhoinfacthavebothrights respected,todenytotheirfellowcitizens,taxed proportionatelywiththem,civicrightswhichthey themselvesenjoy. Catholicismisabelief.Thecontentofthat beliefandthereasonsforitneedtogrowwiththe child.Catholicismisawayofworship.Thelove andappreciationofprayer,oftheMass,ofthe Sacraments,needstogrowwiththechild.Catholicismhasamoralpattern.Thatpatternhasto belearnedandcommendedyearbyyear,and relatedtobeliefandworship.Forallthis30 minutesperweekisnotsufficient Andbecauseofthisinsufficiency,Catholic parentshavegiventheirmoney-andtheirsons anddaughters-tomakeCatholicschoolspossible.

ACommissiononits future,andthebestmeans ofpromotingit,issoonto report.Theeverydaylanguageofmostofthecountry isEnglish,andemigration hastakenaseveretollof Gaelicspeakersinthefew Gaelic-onlyareas,mostlyremoteareaswhichhavekept theoldlanguage.
Thereare,therefore,many Gaelic-speakersabroad,and inLondonmanyofthem havebeenattendingaCatholicRetreatbeingconducted intheIrishlanguageby IrishFranciscanFathers, whoalsogivemissionsin theIrishGaelic-speaking areas.
Irishdancing,language andcustomsflourishinLondonandanumberofother cities,wheretheyarea voluntarylinkbetweenthe emigrants,andofteninNew Yorktherearebiggerattendancesatfestivalsofthese activitiesthanatsimilar eventsinIreland.
Itisnotunlikelythatthe officialapproachathometo thebestmeansoffurthering thesenativeculturalactivitieswillbenefitfromthe findingsoftheCommission. Makingthelanguagecompulsoryhasbeentheofficial policyoftheStateinschools sincetheestablishmentof theStatein1922.
Onedesirableeffectofthis bilingualteachinghasbeen tosustaintheIrishreputationforacommandofEnglishasaresultofthis acquaintancewithasecond languagefrominfancy.

FatherTsuwasbornon December7,1890,andhe enteredtheSocietyofJesus in1912.Hewasordainedto thepriesthoodafterhaving madehistheologicalstudies inHastings,England.He spentagreatpartofhislife asamissionaryintheProvinceofKiangsuorinthe parishesofShanghai,with intervalsduringwhichhe servedasprefectofstudies orofdisciplineincolleges anduniversities.Hewasa manofmorethanordinary firmnessofcharacterand hewascapableoffilling manyoffices. Whatwasmostremarkableinhimwashisintrepid characterandzealforthe Church.Henevermadea secretofhisardentpatriotism.Thosewhoknewhim wellcanwitnesstohis patrioticjoyorsorrowin thesuccessesorreverses sufferedbyChinabothin nationalinternalaswellas ininternationalmatters. Patrioticinthetruesense oftheword,heneverallowedhimselftobetakeninby theadulteratedpatriotismof thecommunistregime.He suspectedtheso-calledCatholicPatrioticAssociationas earlyas1957.Atthattime, throughatraveller,hesent anoralmessagetohisReligiousSuperioraffirminghis indefectibleattachmentto theChurchandhisresolutiontoremainfaithful,come whatmay. Hewasplacedundersurveillanceintheresidenceof ZiKaWeiforashorttime andinApril,1959,hewas imprisoned.

AsArchbishopSigismondi presentedtheMissionCross toItalianDoctorMarkFabbribeforeheleftRometo serveinNigeriaasalay missionary,hepaidtribute tothenursesanddoctors servingaslaymissionaries inmanypartsofthepagan missionfields, CardinalAgagianianalso spokeontheoccasion: "Whilethoselaymissionariescarryontheirmedical workatthesideofmissionaries,theyshouldfeel themselvesincludedinthe greatuniversalprayerthat goesupfromtheheartsof millionsofthegrateful fromonepartoftheearth totheotheratthedawning ofeachnewday.Theirwork willberevivifiedandmade fruitfulbythatprayerand itwillbesteadfastlyunited tothegenuinemissionary intentionoftheChurch."

FatherErnestFirisin,a VeronaFatherandpioneer missionaryoftheSouthern Sudan,diedonAugust26in
FatherFirisin,oftheMissionarySonsoftheSacred Heart,leftItalyforthemissionsin1902.Inthebeginningofhismissionarycareer heworkedintheMission ofWau.Aftersometimein Sudanheestablishedthe missionarypostofMoped amongtheZandetribe, whichnumbersaboutthree hundredthousandsouls,and hecontinuedtolabour amongthemuptothetime ofhisdeath.TheZandeis averylargetribethat straddlestheSudan-Congo border.
Duringhislongmissionary life,FatherFirisinleftthe SudanforhisnativeItaly onlytwice,oncein1912and againin1922.Hewrote catechismsintheZande languageaswellasaLife ofChristandseveraldidacticsupplements.Healso translatedtheGospelsinto Zandeandprovidedacommentaryforhistranslations.
In1955theRoyalGeographicalSocietyofLondon awardedhimagoldmedal.
AmongtheZandeshewas knownasBaraniBasambambori-Fatherofthe WordofGod.
140,000CATHOLICSIN50 YEARSINSUMATRA
OnJune30.1961,the CapuchinMissionaries.of Sumatracommemoratedthe 50thanniversaryoftheir assumptionofthemissionary responsibilityforthemissionsofSumatra.
TheCapuchinFatherstook overthemissionworkfrom theJesuitFathersonJune 29,1911.AtthattimeSumatrahadabout4,500Catholicsinthefivemission stationsontheisland.TodaySumatrahasbecomean EcclesiasticalProvinceconsistingof-anarchdiocese, tourdiocesesandaprefectureapostolic. InfiftyyearstheCatholics inSumatraincreasedfrom 4,500toabout145,000.The periodofgreatestgrowth wasthelasttenyears.In 1941,whenthewarbroke outinthatarea,therewere about35,000Catholicson theisland.Thewarinterferedwithmissionarywork, anditwasreallynotuntil 1950thatthenormalmission effortcouldberesumed.In theensuringtenyears, Catholicsontheislandincreasedbyabout110,000. TheMissionofBatakand Niaswerethecentresof greatestgrowth.Thedifficultyofobtainingnewmissionariesfromabroadis keenlyfeltinthisgrowing mission.
