Byamartyrhereisnotmeantsomeonewhodiesfor apoliticalcause,orbecauseheseeksimprisonmentas aformofpublicity,butonewhodiesratherthan abandonhisfaithinChrist.Thosewhodofoolhardy thingsevenforthesakeofreligionarenotmartyrs. ThroughouttheStateofVictoriatherewasanorganisationofCatholicSchoolsMothers'Clubs,paralleling similarStateSchoolClubs.Aswell,intheArchdiocese ofMelbourne,therewasaParentsandFriends'FederationonthesamelinesastheW.A.Federation.Ahealthy rivalryexistedbetweenthetwobodieswhichdidmuch good,aseachtriedtoexceedtheotherinthesizeofa seriesofmonstermeetingsthroughoutVictoriaoverthe pastsixmonths,organisedinconnectionwiththeVictorianStateelections.
HadOftenSpokenAtMassMeetings
Hisfirstessayasspeakeratmassmeetingswas, however,inTasmaniawhere,atCygnet,intheHuon Valley,hehadaddressedameetingof2,500people, whichhadbeenthebiggestinrecenthistoryofthe valley,packingthetownhallwithanoverflowlistening torelayingloudspeakers.Therehadbeenafurther meetingatLauncestonandafinalrallyinHobart, wherethetownhallwasfilled.
OnhisreturntoVictoriahehadspokenatsimilar massmeetingsorganisedbytheParentsandFriends' FederationandbytheMothers'Clubs.Thelocalpapers hadcarriedfullreports.Liberal-CountryParty,CountryPartyandDemocraticLaborPartyrepresentatives hadbeenonplatformsandhadbothlistenedand spoken.
Onepoliticianhad,whileexpressingsympathy,told ameetingthatCatholicsmust,inpart,blamethemselves forthepositionintowhichtheirschoolshadgot.In thepast,Catholicshadmoanedandcomplainedabout theirdifficulties,buthadnotspecificallybroughthome theirdifficultiestothepoliticians.Theyhadmadeno attempttousethenormaldemocraticmachineryof statingtheircaseandmakingconcreteproposalsfor relievingthesehardshipstotheirParliamentaryrepresentatives.Theyhadnotusedthemachineryofbringingtheirviewsandproblemstothenoticeoflocalparty groupssothatspecificactioncouldbetakenthrough partychannels.
Amongmanymeetings,oneof3,000intheMelbourne TownHallbytheMothers'Clubsandoneof2,500in DandenongbytheParentsandFriends'Federations stoodout.Localpapersstatedthatthelatterwasthe biggestmeetingeverheldinDandenong.

MUCHofthetroubleinfamilylifetoday isduetothefather'slackofauthority. Afather,however,doesnothaveauthority overhischildrenjustbecauseheistheir "author."Hehasauthoritybecauseitis absolutelynecessaryforthewell-beingofthe child.Ayoungstercannotbeeducatedand growwithoutthisfeelingofsecuritywhich authoritygives.
EDUCATIONisacontinualmovementtowardsfreedom.Whatdoesitmeantobefree?Apersonisfree whenhecanbecomehimself,whenhecanchooseand acceptobligations.
NEEDFOR AUTHORITY
AUTHORITYisaservicetoothers.Itleadstowards loveandcharity.Ithelpsachildovercomehisselfishness. Itpreventsselfishnessfrom consuminghisownpersonality.At thesametimeitallowshimacertain freedomofchoice.Throughauthority helearnstoasserthimself.Hecraves itashecravesfoodandsleepandair.Withoutauthority inthehomeachildwouldgoelsewheretofindit.
Manyhaveamistakenideaofauthority-theythink itistherighttocommandorthatitisanabsolute power.Authorityisnotcontainedinasituation,a principle,oranattitude.Muchofitisinvolvedinthe personhimself.Theoneinauthoritymusthimself submittothelaw,hemustfirstgivetheexampleof obedience.
Authoritydemandsmorefromtheonewhocommandsthanfromtheonebeingcommanded.Authority mustbeearnedoritwillnotbeeffective.Authority dependsgreatlyonrespect.Ifafatherdoesnotdeserve authorityachildquicklyrecognisesthisfact.
Authorityinvolvesasuperioritywhichapersonhas. Itdependsoncertainvirtuesandbecauseofthese virtuesauthoritycommandsconfidence,obedienceand respect.Authorityisnot"given"toanindividual.It hastobecultivated.Apersoninauthoritymusthave moralforceandmaturityofcharacter.Withoutthese qualitieshemightbeindangerofresortingto "bossism."Thisinturnleadsrapidlytoalackof disciplineandhostilityonthepartofthechild.
True.whenfatherslackpropervirtuesmanyconvenientlyabdicatetheirroleandhandovertheresponsibilityofeducationandauthoritytothemother.But thisislittleconsolationforachildwhoneedsboth parentsafterbirthasheneededthembeforebirth.
Itmustbeemphasisedthatwhereauthorityisinvolved,admirationisindispensable.Theproblemof authorityandeducationinasensecanbereducedto admiration-unlessthereisadmirationtherewillbeno imitation.Authorityisnotaninfalliblepowergiven outrighttoafather,norisitproperlyexercisedonly byagivencommand.Itbecomestrulyeffectivebecause ofacertainatmospherebywhichauthorityissurrounded.
CHILDRENwillbeinfluencedalloftheirlivesbythis atmosphereofauthorityorthelackofit.Thissilent atmospherewilldomoretoeducatethem THEKEYthananexpressedcommandoftheir parents.Thisatmosphere,ifcorrect.will WORD createconfidenceinthechildren.Confidenceisthekeywordforallauthority.
Togaintheconfidenceofhischildren.however,a fathermustunderstandthem.Andtodothishemust beapproachable.Whenadolescentstodayrevoltitmay wellbetheircry.againsttheunapproachabilityoftheir parents.
Whatcanfathersdotodevelopproperauthority?
First.fathersshouldstudychildguidance.Toooften onlymothersaretaughtthesecourses.
Secondly,fathersmustconstantlyrealisethatdisciplineisbasedonwisdomandnotonpower.
Thirdly,thefathermustbringintothehomeandthe livesofhischildrensomethingdifferentfromthat whichmotherscontribute.Menandwomenareequivalent-theyhavethesamevaluebuttheyarenotthe same.Thecomplementoneanother.Themotheroften emphasisesdomesticrelations,thefathertheoutside world.

Thischurch,ifithadbeen built,wouldhavehada domewithdoublerowsof archesatthebaseandwith highbelltowersateither side.HoweverPopePaulIII summonedMichelangelo, whoreturnedtoBramante's designforthedomewhile addinghisownideasin otherpartsofthechurch.
ThedesignofSt.Peter's, asenvisagedbythetwo Sangallos,canbeseeninthe woodenscalemodelpre-
servedinSt.Peter's.Itwas thecustomofarchitectsof thosedaystohaveperfectly scaledwoodenmodelsconstructedbycabinetmakers todemonstratetheirideas.
TheSangallomodel,which
ismorethentenfeethigh and12feetlong,wasbuilt between1537and1546.The modelofMichaelangelo's domewasbuiltovera15yearperiodbetween1546 and1561.
Recordsreportthatten mastercarpentersandcabinetmakersworkedonthe modelofMichelangelo's dome,carvingeachcolumn, panel,windowanddecora tionwithfaithfulnessto eachsingledetailsetdown bythegreatarchitect.As theyworked,Michelangelo watchedeachpiecefashionedandsetintoplace.
Afterthebasilicawas completed, the wooden modelswerekeptinvarious storeroomsoftheVatican andfinallywereconsigned tothePetronianMuseum,a smallbuildingbetweenthe PalaceoftheHolyOffice andtheColonnadeofSt. Peter's.
